Chapter 16: Talismans vs. Jewels
Halfway Between Tristainia and the Academy
Johan spat out more blood as his Healing Jewel kicked in. The nerve of these lesser magicians, collapsing a stone passage on top of him like that! If his reflexes had been any slower, he would have been crushed like an ant!
Fortuitously, he had managed to form a Jewel Knight just in the nick of time to act as a shield and prop up the tunnel long enough for him to summon another one to dig a tunnel out of the death-trap he had found himself in.
Well now, no more Mr Nice Guy! Collapse a tunnel on him, would they? He'd…well, thanks to that thrice-accursed geas that he was under, he couldn't use his Jewel Magic against the women. Hell, it was gradually getting hard to harm women when he wasn't using Jewel Magic!
'That bedamned old hag!' he thought angrily as he returned his orange Jewel Knight to its jewel form. He had tried to find the geas contract so he could destroy it, but the wily old witch had entrusted it to a monster that not even his Jewel Magic could overcome, an ancient Cockatrice. The thrice-accursed thing was all but impervious to magic and lived in a cavern where Jewel Magic could not be used thanks to a bunch of unique magical crystals that were clustered along the walls.
It had been those crystals, he suspected, that caused his Dimensional Gate to send him here when he tried to bypass them and get the contract. Damn and double damn the cursed things! He'd destroy them when he returned!
For the moment, however, he had to return to the task at hand; to whit, relieving the Princess of Tristain of her Sceptre. Johan had no intention of allowing these primitive magicians to claim they were the most powerful magic users in the land, not while he still lived.
As he stood up, wincing at his battered body, he took stock of his remaining resources. Thanks to the Duchess de Vallière, he was down four of his prized jewels. In order to be usable for Jewel Magic, the precious stones in question had to be of a particularly fine cut and with few impurities. After being bathed in a solution forged of his blood and several choice ingredients, they had to be sealed to him so none other than himself could use them. The entire process took a month per jewel and was far more laborious than it sounded.
It had been a year since he had been dumped in Halkaginia, and he had only recently acquired an estate suitable for his status. Arriving in this world with only a dozen or so gems had been…difficult, to say the least, and he had expended half of them, overusing the magic within them and rendering them useless for his spells, in that time. He had replaced two of them since he acquired his new home, but had lost them and two more thanks to that overly stubborn woman!
This meant he was down to four gems, not counting the one he kept for emergency getaways. He had not expected to have to deal with this situation for a few more months, as it took one of two things for a jewel to be rendered useless. The first was overuse on his part, while the second was if the Jewelenritter was defeated by an external force, such as Karin of the Heavy Wind.
She had not just defeated his Jewel Knights; she had shattered them to smithereens, to the point that the feedback had destroyed the actual jewel on his Zaubererhandschuhe, his sorcerer gloves. In his world, the feedback would merely make a crack on the jewel, signifying that it was useless. If he had to guess, he would theorise that the greater amount of ambient magic in this world strengthened the feedback by about ten times its normal amount. It had been shocking when it happened, but he wasn't a prodigy in all things magical for nothing. He had figured it out in about thirty seconds, including the ten seconds it had taken for his mind to reboot from the shock.
Still, four gems was a pathetically small amount to be using when his targets were in the Tristain Academy for Magic. He had guessed that was the location of the secret tunnel's exit since the moment he broke the door down. It was the only location that made sense for fleeing Royals to retreat to; a well-fortified location with numerous powerful magic users to protect them. He had to tip his hat to the person who conceived of the tunnel.
Abruptly, the ground rumbled and shook, making Johan stumble, drawing him out of his thoughts. When he looked around to see what was causing it, his eyes widened as he spotted an enormous wood golem rising up from the ground. This should be impossible, as these primitives still did not have the skill to accomplish this with the tools they had at their disposal. No, this was sorcery from his own world.
Where though? European golems were made of clay and metal by preference and while Native American shamanistic tradition could create golems from wood, the largest was only the size of a camper van. Russian Volkvi, or druids, preferred to use flesh golems. That left eastern mysticism as the source, specifically the Chinese system of elements used by both the Japanese and Chinese mystics since five-hundred years ago, when the world had lost the so-called Void magic.
Of the two countries, he hoped that this was a Chinese Daoist Mage. They were by far easier to deal with, either by force majeure or by bribery. The Japanese Onmyōji Mystics were highly skilled, highly moral spellcasters who had blocked every attempt by foreign magic users to set up any sort of major presence in the country since the start of the Meiji Restoration. His knowledge of their skills was sparse at best, as they had completely changed the Wu Xíng they had borrowed from China by melding it with their Godai. His own organisation had been firmly ejected the only time he had tried to set up an operation on mainland Japan.
Judging by the samurai-style that the golem possessed, however, it didn't seem like today was his lucky day. Quite how an Onmyōji came to be in this godforsaken world was an interesting question, possibly one to ask while he was standing over their defeated body, but for now, he'd settle for taking care of the golem.
"Humph. Such a toy is no threat to me." He snorted as he inserted a ruby into one of his gloves, "Laden: Komm! Ercheine, mein Juwelenritter!"
In a flash of light, his ruby knight appeared before him, spear in hand. He gestured grandly before adding more magic to it.
"Verbesserung: Riesen Verwandlung!" he ordered. The Jewel Knight started to glow and then it shot up in height and overall size until it matched the incoming wood golem in size.
"Well then, Onmyōji…let us dance." Johan smirked.
With Saito
Academy Curtain Wall
"Looks like he's taken the bait." Saito whispered to Louise, who was next to him.
"Why is it so important that he focus on your golem?" the pinkette hissed back, "I thought you said it wouldn't last long?"
"True, but remember his title the 'Thief of Legacies'?" the Japanese youth asked, "That's because in the last three decades, he's gone around, defeating Jewel Witch families and stealing their magic. Not literally of course, just their spell research. Something that only a few people knew though was that all of those families, each with their own specialties, were rivals and occasional enemies, so they designed their spells to be incompatible with one another. The family who created the spell that turns their Jewel Knights into giants, the Wertz Family, were rivals with the clan who created a spell that allowed them to summon two Jewel Knights at once, the Gruber family, so neither spell can be used while the other is in play, meaning…"
"…meaning that while he's using the giant knight, he's helpless?" Louise said questioningly.
"Not helpless; he merely cannot summon another Jewel Knight." Saito corrected her as the two large golems drew closer to each other, "He can still use lesser Jewel Magic to protect himself and attack. I'm just glad that…no, that's in bad taste."
"What?"
Saito sighed. "The family who were acknowledged as the strongest and most adaptable Jewel Witches were the Harvenheit Family. Everything the other families could do, they could do just as well or better. Seventy or eighty years ago, they were wiped out to the last man, woman and child by a hornless demon, except for a girl. She perished a decade or so later attempting to avenge her family's deaths in another country. All of the Harvenheit Family's magical research was lost then. What I was about to say was that it's a good thing the Harvenheit Family wasn't still around thirty years ago, otherwise Johan would have gone after them first and taken their magic. He'd be much harder to deal with if he had done so."
Louise nodded. It was in bad taste to think that, regardless of how true it was.
"I'm going to make my move now." The young Onmyōji informed his Apprentice/Master, "Remember how to use that?"
He gestured at the talisman Louise clutched in one hand. It was a control talisman made using his and her blood that would let her control the wood golem. He had asked permission from Louise before making it, and had destroyed the ink afterwards, but it was still a bit scary to see someone create a talisman using her blood-infused ink.
"Y-Yes." She nodded firmly.
"Only use it if you see an opportunity." He warned her, "It will work three times before ceasing to function, unless the failsafe activates. That's the best I could do."
The pinkette nodded unhappily. She didn't like the plan that Old Osmond, the Queen and Saito had put together, but at least she had the power to help out in it, rather than being stuck in the Headmaster's office like the Princess was.
Henrietta wasn't very happy about that.
Her mother had been forced to order her to stay put, which had prompted an argument between the two Royals. Louise knew that her old playmate was feeling guilty about leaving Louise's mother behind at the castle, but the pinkette knew that it had been her mother's decision, not Henrietta's. She knew that if she had been in the same place as Karin of the Heavy Wind, she would make the exact same choice, after all.
"Be careful." She said to him.
The black-haired boy chuckled softly. "I don't need to be told that."
With that he headed down the stairs of the curtain wall and pulled out a talisman.
"Talisman of Earth, come to my aid!" he chanted, "Transport me to my destination! Ryūmyaku Tensō! (Dragon Vein Transfer!)"
As he cast the spell, Saito had to grin. This was originally used to transfer mystics around Japan before the Heavenly Transfer Gate at the Imperial Academy had been built. Only senior members of the Ministry had known it then. Nowadays it was seen as an anachronistic spell, limited by the location of the Ryūmyaku, which was pretty sparse outside of Kyoto. Here, in Halkaginia however, the Ryūmyaku extended all over the country, even connecting to other countries. Theoretically, he could travel the span of the continent with this spell.
As he sunk into the earth, he just hoped he would have the chance to do so.
Johan's Perspective
The Jewel Master smirked as the two golems started to clash, the wood golem being forced to fend off the spear attacks of his jewel golem. He frowned as he spotted a glint of metal on the wooden golem after a near miss by his jewel golem.
'My, my…how clever. The onmyōji who created the golem coated it in metal plates, and then covered the metal in a layer of wood, creating subdermal armour for his creation.' He thought with a touch of admiration. Not very many spellcasters thought of mixing up their spells or thought outside the box.
When the samurai golem drew its sword, Johan knew that this would take some time to resolve. If only he could figure out how to remove the interlock sections of the Wertz and Gruber families, he could overwhelm the wood golem two to one! Instead, the damn spells just would not work without the interlock portions! Curse those idiots and their useless internal squabbling!
"Talisman of Fire, come to my aid!" a voice shouted…from behind him! Johan wheeled around to see a young boy in the clothes of an onmyōji throwing a talisman at him.
"Shild!"
"Kūenjin! (Soaring Flaming Edge!)"
The talisman spat out a large blade of fire at Johan, who just barely managed to put up a shield in time to block it. Even with the shield, he was sent flying, landing sprawled out on the ground in an undignified heap. This caused his ruby golem to falter for a moment, the wood golem landing a solid hit to its side that caused a crack along its surface.
"How irksome…!" Johan snarled as he jumped to his feet with a scowl and addressed the boy in Japanese, "That was very rude, young onmyōji. You introduce yourself before a battle, unless you are an assassin."
"Considering the reason you ended up here is because of an assassination attempt, you'd know all about that." The Japanese boy replied in Tristainian.
Johan's eyes widened in disbelief. It hadn't been an accident?! Someone had tried to kill him using his own spell?!
"That face you have says that you didn't know that it was an assassination attempt." The boy observed, folding his arms into the sleeves of his onmyōji robes, "Your second in command? You know, Adolf Kempner? He boasted of sneaking in and altering your research notes several times, with you never noticing a thing. He's taken your seat on the Concave, just so you know."
Johan shook with hidden rage. That no good lousy traitorous bastard had betrayed him! After everything he had done for Kempner, the double-crossing schwein had stabbed him in the back!
The German Jewel Master, trembling with rage, glared at the Onmyōji as he attacked one black diamond to his empty glove and pointed it at him. "I…thank you for the knowledge, boy. Now I am going to take it out on your hide, so prepare to die! Schwarz Gewehr!"
A beam of black light erupted from his hand and raced to strike at the boy, who threw talismans in front of him and commanded, "Yata no Kagami!"
The black beam of magic struck the wall of green talismans and struggled against it for a moment before dissipating with a bang, exhausting half of the talisman wall.
'Kuh…that should have broken through any shield he could have thrown up…he isn't that powerful…' Johan thought in shock before it clicked, 'No…Onmyōji use talismans to gather the ambient magical energy to supplement their own reserves. I'm fighting against someone who is three times as powerful here as he would be on Earth!'
"Not a bad effort, boy." He said aloud, having calmed down thanks to his shock, "Now, would you do me the good manners of telling me your name, or will I have to spank it out of you?"
"I don't really care to know what your fetish is, just so you know." The boy replied with a shudder, "But yes, I should introduce myself. I am Hiraga Saito, Junior Adept of the Imperial Ministry of Onmyōji. You need no introduction, Johan von Leopold, former 13th Chair of the Concave of Thirteen!"
His face twisting in renewed anger at the reference to his former deputy usurping his position. "You will regret that, Hiraga Saito. I am not one to be trifled with!"
"Are you going to talk or fight?" Saito asked insolently, "Talisman of Wind, come to my aid! Shinkū Kamaitachi! (Vacuum Sickle Weasel!)"
"Schwarz Blitzen Speer!" Johan spat back.
A large bolt of wind clashed with another bolt of darkness as Onmyōji clashed with Jewel Sorcerer.
Same Time
Headmaster's office, Tristain Academy of Magic
Henrietta bit her lip as she watched Louise and Saito fight. Louise was a backup for the large wood golem, while Saito was attacking Johan von Leopold directly. The entire plan hinged on Saito's ability to use the ambient magical energy of this world to overwhelm his enemy. It was the sole equaliser that he had over Johan.
According to Saito, although talismans and jewels could be used in a similar way, jewels didn't have the same useful magic-saving abilities that the talismans possessed. They were merely mediums for the power of the caster. While that of course meant that they reduced the amount of magic that was consumed as opposed to casting without one, they didn't use the ambient magic in the way that Saito's talismans did.
She flinched as a flash of black lightning came from where Saito was fighting. Henrietta could tell that Louise had grown fond of her Familiar/Master and was depressed at the thought of him severing their bonds and returning to his own world. She just hoped that nothing happened to either of them on this day.
"It's frustrating, isn't it?" her mother spoke up from her position next to her. Henrietta looked at her questioningly.
"This is a sad part of being born into any Royal family, my daughter." The Dowager-Queen explained, "You are forced almost permanently into a position of being either a prize or a liability in instances such as this. An objective, something to attacked or defended, without consideration of your will or feelings. I'll tell you from experience that it isn't pleasant and, by the look on your face, you're finding that out for yourself."
"I don't want to lose Louise, Mother." Henrietta replied quietly, "Why does she have to be out there?"
"She is the only person other that young Saito who has any idea how to use those talismans of his." Osmond replied as he stumped over to stand on Henrietta's other side, "Besides, hidden behind the curtain wall of the Academy as she is, it is doubtful that she is in any danger. The only one in danger that I can see here is Professor Saito."
Osmond had, much to Louise and Henrietta's disapproval, declined to send any Mages with Saito, as their primary duty was to protect the Royal family. For his part, Saito had agreed, stating that he would reduce the number of gems that the man had at his disposal if nothing else.
"If something happens to him, Louise will be crushed." Henrietta whispered.
"She has grown very fond of him." the Dowager-Queen agreed, "Sadly, the path he wishes to take is one where they will be separated eventually."
"I doubt he can do either of his goals." Osmond said as he stroked his beard, "Death has been the only way to sever a contract in the past and no summoned creature has ever returned to whence they came."
"No familiar has ever been human before." Henrietta countered, "Let alone a Mage."
Osmond acknowledged that with a nod, then winced as Saito summoned a water dragon to attack Johan, who countered with a large blast of black energy, destroying the liquid dragon in seconds. "I must say, I am impressed that he has held out this long…Saito that is."
"Yes. It is clear that, despite maintaining control and supplying power to that enormous ruby-coloured golem of his, this Johan character beats Mr. Saito in both technique and experience." The Dowager-Queen frowned, "These otherworldly Mages are simply frightening at times. No Mage in this world can use such large golems, and even if they could, they would be totally caught up in maintaining and directing it. The framework of his spell must be of immense complexity, yet he's maintaining it perfectly in the middle of a duel."
"Saito has said that our magic is, by his standards, primitive." Henrietta said musingly, "I would think that 'crude' would perhaps be a better way to describe it. Not much has changed in our magic since the time of the Founder, no new innovations. Why? Because we haven't been forced to. With the Church of the Founder mediating between the other kingdoms, we haven't had a large-scale war in millennia, so we've had no reason to improve our spells."
"Very true." Osmond said with a sigh, "The conservative nature of the Church and the Nobles doesn't exactly help. 'If it was good enough for our ancestors, then it's good enough for us' is what I hear every time any time a new spell is proposed. Che, those old fossils wouldn't know an original thought if it tweaked their noses."
Henrietta kept the thought that Osmond was certainly old enough to be called old as well to herself.
"Oh my!" her mother gasped as the ruby golem's spear was shattered by a swing of the wood golem's sword. The jewel construct staggered back before discarding the remains of its weapon and drawing the sword at its waist. At the same time, Johan's concentration faltered for a moment, allowing Saito to send the Jewel Sorcerer flying with another blast of wind that he slipped under the distracted German's guard.
"So actions outside of standard ones require more concentration than normal." Henrietta muttered, taking in this new scrap of information.
"He looks mad." Osmond observed as Johan stood up, rage etched on his face as he renewed his assault on Saito with redoubled vigour, "Tsk, tsk…he's getting sloppy, and letting his anger guide his spells and actions. This evens the playing field even more in Saito's favour. Still, the spells he is firing are immensely powerful and must consume a large amount of willpower. If he has undergone the same process of his reserves growing as Saito has, it makes me wonder how long he has been here, under our very noses, that he hasn't collapsed from the expenditure?"
The two women said nothing as they watched the duel play out before them.
Back with Saito…
"Talisman of Ice, come to my aid!" the onmyōji snarled, "Hyōryū no Hōkō! (Roar of the Ice Dragon!)"
The head of a dragon made of ice appeared and unleashed a concentrated blizzard of ice and snow at Johan, who countered with a shouted; "Schwarz Strahl!" which unleashed a blast of black energy, clashing with the blizzard, cancelling both spells out.
"Schwarz Nebel!" the Jewel Sorcerer shouted, fed up of being forced onto the same playing field as an immature brat who had probably only just graduated from an Academy recently!
Black light radiated from the jewel on his hand, creating a dome of darkness that encapsulated both magic users. As the caster of the spell, he could see through it, but the boy couldn't. Even better, no light spells would function in this dome, meaning the boy was totally helpless.
At least, he should have been.
"Talisman of Earth, come to my aid!" the young onmyōji declared.
'What the…?! Invoking magic without looking where it's going?!' Johan thought in disbelief
"Tsuchi no Senjin! (A Thousand Earth Blades!)"
Realisation struck Johan like a hammer and he scrambled out of the dome as a thousand sharp blades of earth erupted from the ground around Saito, spreading outward in a wave that came close to robbing Johan of some very intimate parts of his anatomy that he was rather attached to.
The one thing that Jewel Magic was bad at was area of effect spells. Sure, they had AoE spells, but none of them were really effective. Jewel Magic was best suited to blitzkrieg and duelling one-on-one, not battlefield supremacy tactics. By that same measure, it was also very bad at countering AoE spells.
Which was why Johan was doing an undignified retreat at the moment. Discretion is the better part of valour, after all. Regretfully, he cancelled his darkness spell, as it would just encourage the boy to lash out with more wide ranged spells.
Saito was revealed, surrounded by a field of earthen blades that reached up to his waist. With a gesture of his hand, they ripped free of the earth and twirled around in the air to pint at Johan.
"Talisman of Light and Dark, Talisman of Earth, come to my aid!" Saito declared, "Hatogi! (Blade Sharpening!) Chisō Rendan! (Earth Spear Barrage!)"
Light covered the earth blades, fading to reveal lethally-sharp edges and points before the thousand blades hurtled at Johan, intending to turn the Jewel Sorcerer into shredded flesh and bones.
"Schwarzen Königs Schild!" Johan yelled in desperation, invoking the strongest defensive spell he had with the black diamond. A black diamond-shaped shield sprang up before him, then two more behind it.
The blades crashed upon Johan's shield like rain. Initially, the shield weathered the assault easily, shattering the earthen blades into pieces as they slammed into it, but as the blades continued to assail him, Johan ground his teeth together as he saw cracks appearing in the first shield layer.
'This should be impossible! I don't care if he's using the ambient magical energy around him as a supplement for his own magic reserves, he shouldn't be able to use so many spells in succession!' the Jewel Master thought as he tried to reinforce the first layer of his shield, 'His talismans use a small part of his own magic to activate them, so his own reserves should be low by now! How has he been tossing out spells as if they were going out of fashion like this!?'
Despite his best efforts, the first layer shattered into pieces when three earth blades struck the same place at once, leaving the second layer to be bombarded with the rest of the earthen spears.
"Why are you fighting me, Hiraga Saito?!" Johan roared over the sound of the blades striking his shield and the clash between the wood golem and the ruby golem, "Why are you fighting on behalf of these primitives?! They are beneath us!"
"I disagree." Saito replied with a shout of his own, "Their magic is primitive, yes, but to judge them by their magic is foolishness. This isn't our world, Jewel Sorcerer! We have no right to pass judgement on them or interfere in them like you have! As such I will stop you!"
"You wet-behind-the-ears brat!" Johan roared, "You have no right to dictate what I can and cannot do! I am strong and may do with the weak as I see fit!"
A crack appeared in his second shield layer, much to his shock.
"Then why is a fresh Junior Adept beating you like an unwanted stepchild if you are so strong?" Saito countered, "Is the mighty Thief of Legacies running out of steam so early?"
"You impudent…!"
Another crack appeared in the barrier, then another.
"Vanish!" Saito ordered, "This is not a place for you to be!"
The last hundred earth blades formed up and slammed into the shield as one, destroying both remaining layers at once. The jewel on Johan's glove fell out and shattered into dust, utterly spent from the amount of magic it had channelled.
With a growl, Johan grabbed another jewel. He dared not use the diamond he had used against Karin of the Heavy Wind, not yet. If this fight had taught him anything, it was that the boy, age and experience to one side, was not to be underestimated. Inserting the sapphire gem into his vacant glove, Johan clenched his fist.
"Riesenjuwelenritter, Angriff! Zerstöre den Feind!" He ordered angrily, "Schnell!"
A blue aura surrounded the ruby knight, making Saito's eyes widen.
'Damn! Sapphires and rubies are both a form of the corundum mineral!' Saito though as the ruby golem seemed to get even more powerful, knocking the wood golem back, 'If memory serves, the Wertz family were centuries-long allies of the Hindenburg family, who designed spells to be used when on the same field of battle. I have to force him to turn his attention back over here!'
"Talisman of Wind, come to my aid!" he shouted, "Assatsu! (Crushing Death!)"
Johan choked as the air around him seemed to condense around his throat, strangling him. He had planned to ignore the boy, who hadn't struck at him with the intent to kill as of yet, and destroy his golem, allowing him to recall his ruby golem and fight the buy using it. This changed things, however.
"A-Abwehr!" he choked out, the jewel on his glove sparkling as it diverted magic away from reinforcing his ruby Jewel Knight and towards repulsing the magic around his neck. Gasping as he could breathe properly, he glared at Saito.
"You now have my full attention, Hiraga Saito." He said icily, "I will put you down like a dog before taking what I want from the Royal family! No more games!"
Spreading his arms, he started to chant.
"Ich suche ein ewiges Land aus Eis und Schnee. Ein Land, in dem die Zeit keine waltet. Auf unser Pakt, tun meine Gebote, oh Königin des Eises. Herrschaft über die gefrorenen Himmel und einfrieren Zeit. Erstellen Sie eine Welt der Stille!"
Pointing at Saito, Johan finished with, "Atem des gefrorenen Nordens!"
A large magic circle appeared above Saito, bearing the Norse rune of Ice, Isaz, in the centre. Saito activated his Yata no Kagami defence spell just in time, as a large blast of pure freezing wind, snow and ice was generated by the circle and sent hurtling right at him.
"Damn!" Saito growled as he grabbed another talisman.
With Louise
Louise's eyes widened in shock at the spell that Saito was defending against. It was enormous! She could see the light of his defence spell flickering as it valiantly tried to protect him from Johan's spell, but the ice spell was far too powerful.
She grabbed the communication talisman she had been given and activated it. "Saito! GET OUT OF THERE!"
"It's…up to you now…Louise." Saito replied, his voice strained by the effort of holding such a powerful spell at bay.
In a flash of white light, the area where Saito had been standing was now an enormous ice crystal surrounded by an icy tundra of ice and snow.
"No…Saito…" Louise fell to her knees in disbelief. The control talisman glowed red, signifying that she now had full control of the golem, a safety measure Saito had told her he had put in for this sort of situation.
Anger and rage boiled up through her veins. He was gone. Her mother had been attacked, her best friend driven to tears and her Master was gone!
"I'm going to kill you!" Louise de Vallière howled in anger.
