Prologue
Dark skies held her focus, the hazardous clouds of miasma spreading fast over all it could reach. It spread like a plague. It might as well have been one. The end seemed to be set in stone, and she struggled to keep her tears at bay. The splintered half of her bow was held loosely in her hand. It no longer would serve as any good.
There was one thing she could do now, but she couldn't be sure if it'd actually manage to do any good.
Kagome opened her palm and glanced down at the pink jewel held by her. Her hand trembled, and she squeezed her eyes shut to block out her own fear. She dropped her broken bow and clasped her hands together, pulling the jewel to the center of her chest.
"Please, hear my plea," she whispered. She could feel the dark clouds creeping ever nearer. She thought of her already fallen comrades, and she felt fear. She didn't want their sacrifices to all be for naught. This hard-fought battle couldn't end on such a somber note for them, not after everyone had put all their efforts in. They had protected her, but now…
The jewel pulsed in her grasp, and she let her eyes flutter open. Mind made up, determination flowing through her veins, Kagome decided on those final words.
"Take what's left of me and put an end to this battle."
She felt the jewel accept her request, her eyes snapping open when the jewel merged back with her body. She looked up to see the clouds slowly fading with pink glitters, and her expression softened. A dull ache formed in her chest, where the jewel now resided.
She felt no regrets and her vision began to turn to pitch darkness.
After all, if her allies had given their all in this fight, then it was only fair for her to extend the same effort.
She sank down to her knees and breathed a soft sigh as the ache began to burn harsher. Soon enough, it felt like her chest had been lit on fire. The pain was impossible to ignore, and she was stunned out of her daze by the sound of approaching footsteps. She looked towards the source, her eyes meeting empathic indigo.
The figure of Midoriko standing before her wasn't fully there. She was transparent, glowing a shade close to canary yellow. Still, when she reached out towards her, grasping her by her hands, Kagome felt her as if she was a solid figure. A calm expression lingered on the ancient priestess' face.
There were no words exchanged as the world around her finally faded entirely to darkness.
She often wondered why her life was the way it was, although vocalizing that curiosity was another story altogether. For the most part, she kept it bottled up, merely understanding that it was what it was. Outwardly questioning it wouldn't result in much. Still… that nagging, silent curiosity she felt deep within her soul never completely faded.
A booming voice captured her focus, and she was swiftly pulled from her own inner musings. She blinked and looked away from the admittedly beautiful, clear sky as she was reminded of where she currently was.
Her bluebell eyes landed on the tall, bald man as he yelled at another figure standing in one of the many rows of fresh cadet recruits. She observed silently, just as the others did before she let her eyes scan over the rest.
Several looked nervous. Almost as if they were waiting and trying to prepare themselves for whatever insults Shadis might spit their way. They probably were. Others were stone-faced. She couldn't tell much about them, even their auras were hard to distinguish.
She darted her eyes back to the one being yelled at by Shadis, her expression never faltering even when the man slammed his forehead into his, sending the cadet to the ground in the process.
Shadis went on his way, passing through the rows in search of his next target. His focus landed on her for a second, and then he turned away.
She wondered… had he been expecting her one of these days?
He made no comment to her as he skipped over her entirely. He walked by a few others as he did so before he finally found his next choice. The process repeated. He chewed them up and spat them out, testing them, before he moved on to the next.
She wondered how many would give up the first night and leave. She could feel some very clear regrets radiating off of a select few, and she doubted she'd be seeing them around for much longer.
Oh well. Not like it affected her any in the end.
If they couldn't through something such as this, then perhaps it was better for them to back out while they were still ahead.
"Even now, you haven't changed at all, Kagome."
The voice from behind her caught her attention instantly. Alarm raced along her spine when she was taken by surprise. She hadn't even felt anyone approaching her… That'd never happened before.
A part of her wanted to turn and face the newcomer, but she was unable to move. Her body remained frozen in place. The voice, familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time, came again. This time much closer.
"Your heart is as big as ever," the woman breathed a gentle sigh. "All things aside, I'm grateful for you."
She couldn't say anything in response. It was like she was frozen, suspended in time. She couldn't move. She couldn't speak. She couldn't even register her own breathing.
"I won't take up much of your time," she added, as if to assure her of something. "I just… I merely wished to check up on you. I'm… glad to see you're doing so well here." She paused, but Kagome could feel in the air that she had more she wished to say. She didn't have to wait long to hear the rest. "Take care, my child. It won't be an easy life, but I have faith you will manage just fine. After all, you've always amazed me with your soul."
As abruptly as she appeared, the figure vanished, and it was as if everything returned to normal. Kagome turned, only to spot no one behind her. There was a heaviness present in her heart. She gently pressed her hand against her chest, her expression falling.
Why did she know that voice? Why didn't she have a name to place it to?
…
She was woken up with the rest of the trainees. As she sat up in bed, that heaviness still resided in her heart. A frown pulled her lips downward, and she listened for a moment as the rest of the room started to become more active.
A dull ache came from the center of her chest, but she opted to ignore it as she eventually fell into pace with the rest of the room. She pushed that strange dream to the back of her mind, shoving back the acknowledgment of that pain along with it.
It wasn't anything new, either way. Sooner or later, it'd fade.
