I came back to the lab walking in with Grissom. He let go of my hand leaving to go the opposite direction that I was going. Russell's door was wide open as I walked over peeking inside seeing Catherine sitting in a chair talking to him as he stood leaning back against his desk holding a paper.
I knocked seeing them both look in my direction.
"Sara, your back!" Catherine said, standing.
"I just came." I said, walking slowly in.
She walked over putting her arms around me. As she let me go I shook Russell's hand.
"Where is Gil?" She asked
"I don't know. He came in with me." I said, looking behind me.
"Are you ready to work?" Russell asked
"Yeah."
"Good." He said, handing me a paper.
"16 Hanover Avenue." I said, reading then I looked at them. "Okay."
I walked out excited about getting back to work.
Brass was at the scene waiting for me outside. I got out of the Tahoe and hugged him.
"Good to see you." He said "You look much better."
"I feel better." I said, getting my case from the back. "What do we have?"
"Two victims. Shot in the head." He said, walking to the house.
I walked in already seeing one of the victims in the hallway. A female laid on her stomach as if she were running with a pool of blood around her body. The back of her head was a mess. I sighed as I knelt down looking at the wound. I swallowed trying not to throw up. Brass chose to stand a little ways down the hallway. I closed my eyes sitting back then I looked back at Brass seeing he was getting a text. He looked at his phone then at me.
"I have to go." He said
I nodded watching him leave. After returning to the lab a few hours later I went into the breakroom to get an apple. I walked over grabbing on from the bowl on the counter staring at it. Grissom came in smiling at me as he walked over. I put the apple back seeing him.
"Aren't you eating?" He asked
"No, what are you doing?"
"Getting back into the swing of things." He said "My new office is down the hallway."
"Is it nice?"
"Yes, you should come and see it."
"I can now."
He nodded leading me down the hallway stopping at the last door along the hallway. He unlocked the door allowing me inside. I looked around seeing it was as big as his old office and already he had started to transform it into his old office.
"It's nice." I said
He closed the door pulling me to him. I put my head on his shoulder as he rubbed my back.
"How are you?"
"Fine."
"No chest pains?"
"No."
"Good." He said
I lifted my head looking at him. He moved closer kissing my lips. I kissed him then pulled back.
"I should go." I said
"What is your hurry?" He asked
"I need to work on my case." I said, opening the door.
He let me go watching as I went out. I closed the door touching my chest feeling a twinge. I worked straight up to the time to leave. Grissom had to drag me away. We got home and he began to make dinner. I changed my clothes walking to the bedroom door when I felt pain again. I sat down on the bed rubbing my chest hearing him coming in. I stood quickly watching him walk in looking at me.
"What are you doing?" He asked
"Just standing." I said
"Why there?" He asked, walking around the room.
"I don't know." I said
He just shook his head walking into the bathroom closing the door. I sighed walking out to the living room. I sat on the couch turning on the TV. Grissom came out with a gray tee shirt and black pajama pants checking on our dinner then he sat down beside me.
"How is your case?" He asked
"It's okay." I said
I let him have the remote feeling a sharp pain hit me. I tried not to make a sound or cause him to notice. Instead, I got up walking back into the bedroom sitting on the bed feeling another pain hit me. I slid down to the floor touching my chest.
"Sara, what are you doing?" Grissom asked
"Nothing." I said, trying to get up, but it was to hard.
I knew he was going to come in and find me. I tried again, but it didn't work. Grissom walked over coming into the room seeing me on the floor leaning against the bed.
"You okay?" He asked, worried.
"Yeah, I am just sitting."
"Why on the floor?" He asked, leaning down helping me onto the bed.
"No reason." I said
He knelt down infront of me with his hands resting on my knees.
"What is going on?" He asked, searching my eyes.
"Grissom, nothing." I said, trying to act normal even though the pain was terrible.
"Don't lie to me." He said
I stood smiling at him. He stood looking at me.
"I am okay." I said "Go out and I'll be out soon."
He watched me walk to the bathroom. I tried to act normally, but then the pain intensified, and I had no other choice. I fell at the door.
Grissom ran over kneeling down turning my body over. I struggled grabbing at his shirt.
"I am going to call for an ambulance!" He said, leaving me to get his phone.
He came back with the phone in his ear checking my pulse. I just stared at him trying to memorize everything before I died. He put the phone down in speaker as he checked my pulse then my breathing. He did CPR until the EMT's came knocking.
They took me to the ambulance with Grissom following. At the hospital he was told that I had a heart attack. Catherine, and Russell came running in seeing Grissom pacing in the waiting room.
"What's going on?" Catherine asked
"I don't know. They said that Sara had heart attack." Grissom said
Catherine gasped putting her hand over her mouth looking at Russell. Russell sighed reaching over touching her shoulder. Grissom looked at the two white doors leading to another hallway that he could not enter.
Brass ran in seeing them. He looked around then walked over.
"Is Sara okay?" He asked
"Heart attack." Grissom said
"How bad?" He asked
"I don't know." Grissom said
"Mr. Grissom?" A doctor called, walking over.
"Yes, that's me. How is my wife?"
The doctor looked at the three people behind Grissom.
"They are my coworkers." Grissom said
"Your wife is stable now. Apparently, she has been under a lot of pressure, and it finally gave way." The doctor said
"Can I see her?"
"Yes, but only you at this moment."
Grissom nodded then he turned to the others behind him.
"Go on. We need to go to work. Keep us informed." Russell said
They started to go, but Brass hung back.
"Go on, I'll update you." Grissom said
Brass nodded before leaving. Grissom followed the doctor through the doors down the hallway to the fourth door on the right. He opened the door for Grissom to go inside. Grissom stepped inside alone. He heard slow beeping. I laid in a bed by the window on the right of the room. He walked over noting how white I was. His warm hand touched mine gently while his other hand went to my head.
"Sara?"
I never moved as he looked at me.
Brass and Catherine walked down the hallway to Grissom's office later seeing the door was opened.
"Gil?" Catherine called, peeking inside.
Brass stepped in seeing his friend standing hunched over his desk with his head down.
"Are you okay?" Brass asked, walking in touching his back.
"Yeah." Grissom said
Brass looked back at Catherine as she closed the door.
"How is Sara?" She asked
Grissom just shook his head.
"Sit down." Brass said, pulling out the desk chair for Grissom to sit down.
Grissom sat down sighing looking at nothing.
"Gil, talk to us." Catherine said, moving her chair closer as Brass sat beside him.
"I keep thinking how I am a horrible person." Grissom said "All the time I could have been here and I chose to stay in Paris."
"You didn't know this would happen." Brass said
"I was selfish." Grissom said, looking at his desk. "Excuses would always pop up and I just….didn't care enough about coming."
Catherine and Brass watched him in silence.
"Now she is lying in that bed looking so….." He said, stopping looking at them.
"Gil, you need to talk to Sara." Catherine said
Grissom rubbed his chin looking at his desk.
Grissom walked back into the hospital room after work. He was tired, but he couldn't just go home. After begging the staff, he walked in quietly. I was so still and still just as pale.
Grissom sat down in a chair next to the bed. He took my limp hand again wishing I could wake up. He kissed my fingers watching me.
I moved slowly in the afternoon. My eyes adjusted to the room as I looked around. A nurse came in seeing I was awake.
"Welcome back!" She said, checking the heart machine then my eyes.
I watched her in silence.
"The doctor will be right in."
I watched her leave then I looked at the sun coming through the window. Something bad happened for me to be in a hospital. I tried moving only to not be able to. A doctor came in with the same nurse looking happy that I was awake.
"Good to see you awake." He said, checking my eyes and vitals.
"Why…am I here?" I asked
He stood back satisfied.
"You had a heart attack." He said
My eyes went wide.
"What?"
"It was not major, but it was still a heart attack. I was told that you have had a lot of stress lately and that is bad. We are keeping you for a while so we can monitor your condition."
I swallowed not understanding what he was saying.
"You need food in your system. I will have some brought in."
He walked out with the nurse. I tried to get up again. As I dangled my legs over the side the door opened, and I froze.
"Where are you going?" Grissom asked, walking over looking at my thin smooth legs off the bed.
"I'm leaving." I said, trying to move.
"Oh no, your not." He said, moving my legs back on the bed pushing me down on the bed.
"Let me be!" I shouted
He put his hands on my shoulders holding me back.
"Sara, you are not leaving." He said
"Grissom, they are lying to me! They said I had a heart attack!"
"Calm down." He said, looking over at the heart monitor. "You did have a heart attack."
I looked at him confused lying back. He let me go taking my hand.
"No, that can't be true. The last thing I remember is….being at work."
"Don't worry about that now. You just need to get better and come home."
"Grissom…I." I said
He leaned down kissing me before I could say more. The beeping elevated more. He moved back looking at me. I searched his before looking over to see a nurse bringing in some food on a tray. Grissom opened the tray finding a salad and a green Jello. He moved the table over me so I could get to the food. I sat still looking at the food.
He waited for me to eat. When I didn't move he took the fork and poked the lettuce bringing it to my mouth. I moved my head to the side not allowing any food to enter my mouth.
"Sara, come on."
I moved again. He sighed looking at me putting the fork back on the plate. He moved the table before sitting down on the bed looking at me.
"Sara, I want to talk to you about something."
I looked at him.
"I was very selfish not coming when you needed me. I kept making excuses not to come because I didn't want to face the pain."
I looked down sadly as he reached for my hand. I moved it back away from his.
"Why did you do that?" I asked
"I wish I could give you an answer." He said "Please forgive me."
I looked at the windows feeling tears go down my cheeks.
"Sara, please."
I shook my head.
"How can I?" I said, wiping my tears.
He got up off the bed going to the window looking outside.
The door opened as Brass came in seeing us. He looked from me to Grissom.
"Everything okay?"
"Yes, come in." Grissom said
I wiped my tears again as Brass came over to me. He leaned over kissing my head then he moved back wiping new tears away.
"Honey, what's wrong?" He asked
I looked over at Grissom then at him. Grissom silently walked out leaving us. I sniffed starting to cry. Brass held me against him.
Grissom walked into the lab seeing Catherine standing by the front desk looking at him. He looked at her confused as she smiled.
"What are you doing?" He asked
"I have been waiting on you. Did you tell her?" She asked
"Yes." He said, walking past.
"What happened?" She asked, following him.
He stopped at his door down the hallway looking at her.
"I decided to separate." He said, before opening the door going inside closing it. She looked at the door in shock.
I laid back on the bed looking outside wishing for a solution to Grissom and my problem. I loved him, but I felt angry that he couldn't come home and face the drama.
The door opened and Grissom came in. I looked at him as he walked over.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better." I said
He nodded looking down.
"Grissom…"
"Sara, I think we need a break."
"A break?" I asked
"Yes." He said "I will always love you, but I need some time alone."
"I see."
He put his hand over mine. He took a breath looking at me nodding then he walked back out. I watched him leave to numb to cry.
