Chapter 5
She comes downstairs to finish her story. Then, she heard a knock on the door. Ciara walks up to the door to open the door and it revealed to be a delivery man.
"Hi, are you the lady throwing the party?" he asked.
"No, but my aunt is, let me go get her. Aunt Gladys, someone's here," Ciara said. Gladys walks up to Ciara.
"Yes?" Gladys asked.
"The man here has the food we need for the party tomorrow, Aunt Gladys," Ciara responded.
"Oh, yes. Just to the right. There are protective booties for you to put over your shoes," Gladys said as the man brings in the boxes full of food.
"I'll help you, sir," Ciara said as she went outside to grab a few boxes from the truck.
"Oh, you don't have to do that, ma'am," the man said.
"I insist, besides, this is gonna take you forever to load the boxes in," Ciara said.
"Thank you,"
"You're welcome,"
After loading the food into the house and put where they need to go, Ciara lays down on the couch, trying to come up with the ending of her book.
"Come on, Ciara you got this. Think of a great title for your book," she said to herself and then she fell asleep on the couch.
*OTH*
The next morning, she woke up to noises in the kitchen and she sees a blanket on her. She got up from the couch, folds the blanket, and then puts it on the couch, goes to her room and changes clothes. She's wearing a blue blouse, blue jeans, and black flats. She comes downstairs, walks to the kitchen, and sees the animals.
"Good, good. Going great, going great," RJ said. Then, the coffee maker started to go off.
"What is that?" Verne asked.
"That is what gets the humans out of bed in the morning," RJ responded.
"And you guys do know that she's coming, right?" Ciara asked. RJ and Verne eyes widened and turned to the TV, and it showed an empty bed.
"Where'd she go?" one of the porcupine kids asked. Ciara sees her aunt coming downstairs.
"Get down and stay down until she goes back upstairs," Ciara whispered to them. Gladys walks to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee and she sees Ciara.
"Good morning, Aunt Gladys," Ciara said.
"Good morning, Ciara are you going somewhere today?" Gladys asked as she grabs the box of Sickly Sweet sugar packets.
"Yeah, I'm going over at Ben's house so he can look over my book,"
"Oh, how's the book coming?"
"The book is going great, all I have left is the title and I wanted him to look over it to see if it has any grammar and spelling checked and if I need to add something to my book,"
"Okay, don't forget the party is today,"
"I won't, Aunt Gladys. Oh, I have a question," Ciara said.
"What is it?" Gladys asked.
"Did you cover me up with a blanket before you went to bed last night?" Ciara asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"Because I woke up this morning with a blanket on me,"
"I didn't want to wake you up, so I covered you up with a blanket,"
"Oh, okay. Thanks, Aunt Gladys; Anyway, I'm heading over to Ben's as soon as I grab my laptop,"
"You're welcome. Alright, call me if you need anything," Gladys said.
"I will," Ciara said as Gladys walked back upstairs. The animals came out of the kitchen.
"Come on, we got to go before she comes back," Verne said.
"No! Not without those Spuddies," RJ said.
"What?" Ciara and Verne asked.
"Lou, Penny, back to the TV. Heather, keep an eye on that human," RJ instructed the others.
"I'm on it, RJ," Heather said before going upstairs. Ciara looks at the male possum.
"Go after her," she instructed him.
"Thanks, I'm Ozzie," he introduced himself.
"Nice to meet you, Ozzie my name's Ciara. Now, go get your daughter," Ciara said.
"Thanks, Ciara. Heather! Wait!" Ozzie said as he follows his daughter. RJ grabs the chair to climb up to get the Spuddies.
"Okay, hurry up! I got to go to see Ben, and you guys better get out of here before my aunt finds you and you will get killed or worse," Ciara said as she gathers her notebook, pen, pencil, laptop, and phone.
"We will," Verne said.
"I really hope so," Ciara said as she heads out the door. She walks down to Ben's house and she knocked on his door. She heard footsteps coming and the front door opened.
"Hey, Ciara," Ben said. Ben is wearing a blue t-shirt with a blue jean jacket, blue jeans, and sneakers.
"Hi, Ben," Ciara said.
"Come on in," Ben said stepping away from the doorway for Ciara to come in.
"Thanks," Ciara said as she stepped into the house. They went to the dining room and then Ciara sets her laptop down, and shows Ben her story. He reads it and he turned to his friend.
"Wow! It looks good. Even the ending is amazing. You really have talent," Ben said.
"Thanks, but I'm still trying to figure out the title," Ciara said.
"Maybe, we can figure it out together,"
"Yeah, we will,"
Then, they see the exterminator truck and then they looked at each other.
"We need to go," Ciara said as she grabs her phone.
"Okay, we're taking my car," Ben said as he grabbed his phone and car keys. Ben and Ciara head outside and got in his car and drove where the exterminator truck is going. When they got there, the truck was at Gladys' house and they see Dwayne putting the animals in cages. Ciara runs to them with Ben following her.
"You've just been verminated," Dwayne said. Gladys was staring at the animals with death glares. Ben and Ciara caught a whiff and started to gag a little.
"Oh! What's that smell? It stinks," Ciara said.
"Oh! Jeez! (A/N)" Ben said while fanning the smell away.
"Whoa! Well, you stink," Dwayne said.
"That's because you let them into my house! Thoseā¦" Gladys said.
"Hey, Nancy, stop your honkin'. These little guys will be disposed of quickly and humanely," Dwayne said.
"No! Not humanely. As inhumanely as possible," Gladys said before heading back to the house. Shocked by her aunt's words, Ciara had tears welled up in her eyes. Ben puts his on her shoulder and gently pulled her in for a hug in comfort.
"Hey, we'll rescue them, I promise you, Ciara," Ben said softly. Ciara cried in Ben's arms before pulling away and wiped the remaining tears coming out of her eyes. They see RJ pulling the wagon full of food. He got away. She thought.
"Mr. LaFontant, do you mind if Ben and I help you load the animals in the truck," Ciara asked.
"You kids don't have to do it," Dwayne said as he walks to the truck.
"Oh, we want to. We also want to see them before they go," Ciara said.
"Alright, come on," Dwayne said. The three walk to the truck.
"What's he gonna do to us, Mama?" one porcupine asked Penny.
"I don't know, baby," Penny responded.
"I don't wanna die, Dad. Not for real," Heather said.
"There, there, there, sweetheart. We'll be okay," Ozzie said comforting his daughter.
"You were right about him, Verne. We should've listened. Sorry there," Lou said.
"No. I knew we couldn't trust him, and I got us into this. I should've known better," Verne said.
Ben and Ciara looked at each other with confusion.
"What are they talking about?" Ciara asked.
"I don't know," Ben responded.
They loaded the animals in the truck.
"Don't worry, guys, we will get you out. We promise you. Just hang on tight," Ciara whispered at them. Then, she placed a walkie talkie in the passenger side of the truck without Dwayne looking. They watched the exterminator drive away. Ciara walks to the car with Ben following her.
"Ben, we're going to save them. Let's go," Ciara said.
"Yes, ma'am and you're driving," Ben said giving Ciara the keys.
"Me?"
"Yeah, and we're going to call the police on the exterminator and your aunt,"
"I never thought I say this, but let's do it,"
Ben and Ciara got in the car and followed the exterminator until the truck stopped due to the wagon falling on the road and RJ on the truck. Ciara stopped the car.
Author's Note: This reminds me of Gilmore Girls (2000-2007) in the beginning of S3, Ep. 5: "Eight O'Clock at the Oasis". Sorry, I can't resist. It's funny.
