Chapter 3
"Hey, Lav! What do you think about this whole Chamber of Secrets business?" Neville asked Lavender from across the table.
"To be honest, I don't care much. We're purebloods, it's not like the monster of Slytherin is going to attack us." Lavender said and continued to talk to Parvati.
Neville was confused. Why wouldn't Lavender care? Ever since they were children, all Lavender had cared about was protecting him and the other children from the big kids. He still remembered when Lavender had scared one of the 8 graders so much that he ran home to his mum and never bothered them again. If anyone was getting hurt, Lavender would usually be the first person to protect them. That was why she was in Gryffindor! She wasn't afraid to stand up for others.
"Oh, well I'm scared. The monster will probably think that I'm a squib and attack me." he admitted.
"Ugh! I'm getting tired of this, Neville! The monster won't hurt you because you are not a squib! You are a wizard, no matter how low your self-confidence is. And truth be told your whole 'Oh, I'm not good at magic and therefore I'm not a wizard' thing is getting old. It's very annoying." she taunted.
Tears came to Neville's eyes. All he wanted to do was talk to Lavender like they did when they were kids. But it seemed that these days she had no time for him. He got up and ran out of the Great Hall. He thought he heard Lavender calling for him but he didn't stop to check. So, he ran to the first place he could think of, The Greenhouses.
That was how Lavender found him, his robes splattered with mud, in the middle of the Greenhouse 2 as he harvested puffapod seeds.
"Hey Nev," she said softly. Neville did nothing to acknowledge her except grip his gardening shears more tightly.
"Look, I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking and I said all those mean things and I hurt your feelings. It's just that sometimes it gets so annoying when you continuously put yourself down. You're a great wizard Neville and you're the only one who can't see that and as your friend, I get so angry when you think otherwise. And that's why I said all those things." By the end of her apology, Lavender also had tears in her eyes.
Neville turned around. He had a furious look in his eyes. He screamed, "You just don't get it Lav! It's not that I want to be bad at magic, that I want to be bullied for my lack of skills. I. JUST. AM! And you don't how that feels! Constantly being told you're awful, being told that you're nothing, that how could you be the son of the great Frank and Alice Longbottom when you're just, so. PATHETIC! Because that's what I am. Pathetic. I couldn't even cast a simple Lumos to save my life."
Lavender was shocked. She had never seen Neville lose control like that in all their years of friendship. He was always the calm one while she was used to screaming at others. He was the one that reigned in her anger and made sure she didn't go ballistic when someone insulted him. For once in her life, she was speechless.
Neville began crying and slid onto the floor, his knees pulled close to his chest. All at once, Lavender's body started working again and she rushed over to where Neville was. She slung her arm over his shoulder and pulled him close. She simply sat there as he cried on her shoulder.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Lavender asked eventually. Neville sniffled but said, "Yeah." Lavender twisted around a bit so that they were both in a more comfortable position and said, "Whenever you feel like it, I've got all the time in the world."
Neville took a deep breath and began, "First of all, I'm sorry for snapping at you. It's just I've been having a really bad day and then you said all those mean things. And I just guess one thing led to another and here we are."
"Hey! I deserved it. I was being a horrid friend. I should have noticed you weren't your normal self. Do you want to tell me what happened?" Lavender assured.
"Well, I don't know if you noticed or not but I got a letter today." he said. Lavender thought about it then shook her head. "Well, it was from my Gran. My parents have taken a turn for the worse. Whatever hope there was of them recovering is nothing short of a miracle now." Neville whispered.
"Oh, Nev!" she cried and hugged him. "Why didn't you tell me earlier? I could have done something to help."
"There was nothing you could have done and we both know it." Neville told her.
"That's not the point! I could have been there for you!" Lavender said.
She then got up and walked over to where Neville had previously been working with the puffapod seeds.
"What are you doing?" Neville asked as he got up and wiped his tears.
"Being there for you! Now come on, we've got some puffapods to harvest!" Lavender said as she began pulling out the seeds one by one.
Neville smiled. Lavender and he may have their problems and fights like others but no matter what they would always be there for each other.
