…
Chapter 1: The Bracelet of Anubis
Five thousand years ago, a fierce warrior named the Scorpion King led a great army to conquer the known world.
After a vicious campaign which lasted seven long years, the Scorpion King and his army were defeated and were driven deep into the sacred desert of Ahm Shere.
One by one, they slowly perished under the scorching desert sun, until the great warrior himself was left alive. Near death, the Scorpion King made a pact with the Dark God Anubis asking him to spare his life so that he may conquer his enemies, in return he would give him his soul.
Anubis accepted the bargain and spared the Scorpion King's life.
Anubis then gave the Scorpion King command of his army and like an evil flood, they washed away all that lay before them.
His task complete, Anubis forced the Scorpion to serve him for all time. His army was returned to the sands from whence they came.
Where they wait, silently, patiently, to be awakened once again…
…
Egypt, 1991.
In the dark gloom of an ancient ruined Egyptian temple, a figure hidden behind a screen of cobwebs drew a pistol from a hip holster and pulled back the hammer, cocking it with a loud metallic click that echoed deep within the ruins. Holding the pistol in one hand, the figure moved towards the cobweb screen and with an empty hand, the figure pulled away the cobwebs to reveal his face.
He was a tall handsome man with short chocolate brown hair and dark brown eyes and tanned skin. He wore an off-white shirt, canvas trousers and knee-length riding boots. Leather wristbands adorned the man's wrists as his eyes scanned the gloom before him carefully, leaving nothing hidden from his gaze.
A moment later, bearing a lit burning torch in his other hand while still holding his pistol in his dominant hand, the man carefully trod down the sand covered floors of a passage way. Checking the nooks and crannies in the walls, the man held his breath as he peered round the corner of the passage. There was nothing.
Releasing the breath he had been holding, the man slowly pushed the hammer of his pistol back into place before slowly turning around, only to see a small boy with dark hair and green eyes behind round glasses on his face. Startled, the man gave a loud yelp of alarm which caused the boy to yelp in alarm as well and fall backwards onto the sandy floor.
His heart hammering in his chest, Rick O'Connell panted and said, "Harry."
Harry gave a wide grin at his father who then helped him to his feet and said, "What are you doing down here? I thought I told you to wait for us up in the temple."
"But I saw your tattoo!" Harry said excitedly.
"You saw what?" Rick asked blankly and Harry then undid the wristband on his father's wrist.
"On the wall in the temple, there was a cartouche just like it!" Harry said as he undid the wristband to reveal an inky black tattoo on Rick's wrist. "There was the eye, the pyramid, the two kings and everything!"
"Really?" Rick asked and Harry nodded. "Well, I'll be up to take a look at that in a minute," Rick said. "In the meantime, I want you to go back and wait for us in the temple," he added.
"But I-" Harry tried to say.
"No buts!" Rick said sternly. "Pick up your stuff and wait upstairs!" Harry again tried to protest when Rick sternly pointed his finger up the direction of the passage way.
With a sigh, Harry picked up his electric torch and asked, "And what should I do?"
"I don't know. Surprise me," Rick said absently. "Build a better mousetrap, while your mother goes and desecrates another tomb," he added.
…
In another part of the temple, Evy O'Connell nee Carnahan used a brush to dust away the dust and cobwebs off a large stone door. Then a sudden sibilant hissing noise caused Evy to turn around and look around until she saw on the floor slithering toward her was a snake. Frowning to herself, Evy said, "Go away!" With a flick of her boot, Evy kicked the snake away just as her husband Rick came into view.
Managing to avoid the incoming snake, Rick said to his wife, "Those are poisonous you know?"
"Only if they bite you," Evy said quickly as she resumed what she was doing before. "What was that all about?" she then asked.
"Oh, Harry wanted to show me something," Rick replied dismissively as he set his torch down and lifted a nearby crate to move it over to one side. "I swear, the kid gets more and more like you every day," he grunted.
"You mean more attractive and devilishly charming?" Evy asked sweetly.
"No. He's driving me crazy," Rick replied as he kissed his wife on the lips.
Evy only smiled at this as her mind wandered to the day she had met what was now her son.
Six years ago.
Evy tiredly walked the halls of the British museum. It had been a few months now since… the accident. An accident meaning the devastating miscarriage of her unborn child. Evy had cried herself to sleep every night since the loss of hers and Rick's first child. Rick had been drinking to cope with the loss and Evy's brother Jonathon was affected as well as he had been looking forward to being an uncle and possibly godfather and been trying his best to console his sister and brother-in-law with their loss.
Evy's friends and employers had consoled her on her loss and even offered a chance to take a vacation, but Evy hadn't wanted to. She spent most of her time at the British Museum, burying herself in her work trying to distract herself and today was no different.
As she walked through the halls into the Roman exhibit, Evy could hear the sounds of rowdy schoolchildren being led down the hall by a frustrated teacher and tour guide. Evy's heart ached as she saw the schoolchildren practically running through the passage with their teacher trying to corral them into line.
But among those children, one who was lagging behind that caught Evy's attention. He was a small and skinny looking thing with dark messy hair and round glasses that were barely held together by Sellotape. The clothes he wore were a few sizes too big for him and looked very worn out. The boy seemingly lagged behind, an almost unsure, frightened look on his face as he lagged behind. Evy watched the boy, her gaze drawn to him, her heart twanging in her chest as she wondered why the child was the way he was.
Then a much larger, as in fatter boy with straw blonde hair and a pig-like face ran past and Evy swore the boy tripped up the other boy and laughed as he ran ahead. The dark-haired boy fell to the ground with a groan.
Instincts taking over, Evy walked over to kneel down in front of the boy. "Are you alright, sweetie?" she asked him kindly. The boy looked up at her, seemingly afraid. Evy's heart almost broke at seeing the defeated look on the child's face as he looked up at her with those striking emerald green eyes.
"Are you hurt?" Evy asked him gently. "What's your name?"
"H-Harry," the boy said nervously. Evy smiled what she hoped was a kind smile and replied, "Well, it's nice to meet you, Harry. I'm Evy. Are you alright? Are you hurt?"
Harry shook his head and Evy helped the boy. Harry suddenly gave a yelp of pain and Evy had a look of alarm on her face. She was sure she didn't do anything to hurt the boy, so why had he yelped in pain. Carefully lifting up the shirt, Evy had a horrified look on her face as she saw the numerous bruises on the boy's skin.
"Are you sure you're alright?" Evy then asked Harry firmly. "Does that boy hurt you often?"
Harry seemingly shrunk away as though he was afraid. "It's alright. You can tell me," Evy urged him.
"My… uncle and my aunt," Harry said as tears threatened to leak out from behind his glasses.
"You uncle and aunt? What about your parents?" Evy asked.
"They're dead," Harry said and he suddenly burst into tears, sitting down on the floor, covering his face in shame.
Evy was now horrified and angry all at once. This poor boy was an orphan and being abused by his seemingly only relatives and was so afraid of telling anyone about it. Pursing her lips, Evy picked Harry up in her arms and said, "Well, c'mon. I'm going to make some phone calls."
A few phone calls later and a couple of investigations into the personal lives of one Vernon and Petunia Dursley and their son Dudley, it was discovered that Harry Potter was being physically and emotionally abused by his relatives. Medical examination cropped up that Harry received almost weekly beatings from his uncle and was made to perform laborious physical household chores and if they weren't performed to a certain standard, Harry would be starved for a few days.
The Dursleys refused to say where or how they had come into custody of Harry, only that his mother, Petunia's sister, had named her Harry's guardian in her will. The police had asked for physical proof of this will and Petunia refused to say anything on the subject.
Due to the evidence presented, it was decided that Harry would be transferred to a secure foster home until the time came when he could be legally adopted by someone more fitting to be his guardians.
Thanks to some friends in high places who owed her a few favours, Evy had managed to wrangle custody of Harry from the Dursleys into hers and it was to Rick's surprise that his wife came home with an adopted child. Upon hearing from Evy about Harry's situation with his relatives, Rick had privately asked to speak with Vernon Dursley. And by speak, Rick meant that he would beat the shit out of the man for abusing an innocent little boy. Although Evy wasn't one for letting her husband beat the absolute hell out of someone for any reason, she felt that it couldn't be avoided.
A few hours later, Rick had come back home with a wide smile on his face and his knuckles slightly bruised. Evy had pointedly asked her husband if he had killed the man to which Rick said he had not, but the beating he had given the 'fat walrus' would be nothing compared to what he would get in prison as word would spread fast of a child abuser in prison.
It had taken Harry some time to warm up to his new parents, but when he finally opened up, Rick and Evy and Jonathon welcomed Harry into his new home with open arms.
Harry proved to be an exceptionally bright child but had been made to hide his potential by his aunt and uncle who couldn't stand to see their own child being shown up. Now that he was free of the Dursleys, Harry showed a bright mind with an interest in ancient history which pleased Evy to no end and she half-hoped that Harry would follow in her footsteps as an archaeologist to uncover the secrets of the ancient world.
Rick had vaguely commented that so long as Harry didn't read from any ancient books or raise any Mummies hellbent on conquering the world, then he had no problem with Harry following in his adoptive mother's footsteps.
And so, Evy and Rick would take Harry with them on nearly all their archaeological expeditions across the world.
A few years on the year that Harry would be eleven years old, Evy had begun to have dreams and visions of life before Ancient Egypt. Driven by these visions, despite Rick's misgivings, Evy had taken her family with her on expedition to some ancient ruins in Egypt which leads us to the present day.
Present day.
"Where we?" Rick suddenly asked rousing Evy from her reverie. Pulling out from her toolkit, Evy held up a small hammer and chisel.
"Hammer and chisel," she said to her husband proudly. Rick took the tools, looked at them before giving Evy a look which made her say, "Oh, alright! Let's do it your way!" She then gave Rick a large iron crowbar who took gladly and with an almighty swing, he swung it into the large stone door causing it to fall backwards and reveal what was behind it.
To Evy's disgust, crawling all over the floor were hundreds, perhaps thousands of spiders and scorpions over the aged dust covered bones of the previous occupants of the temple. Evy carefully stepped her way over the arthropods using the empty spaces to make her way across as she said, "You know ever since I had that dream, this place is all I can think about it!"
"And ever since you had that dream, I haven't had a decent night's sleep," Rick muttered as he walked across, his boots crushing the spiders and scorpions beneath them.
"I feel like I've been here before," Evy then said as she made her way over to the wall where a torch bracket hung on the wall. "I know I've been here before!" she declared.
"Nobody's been here before, not in three thousand years," Rick reminded her. "Except for these guys," he said as he gestured to the aged skeletons that lay within in the crevices.
Evy then reached out and pulled on the torch bracket. The bracket levered down with a rusty click and the wall beside it swung open. Evy then looked at Rick and asked, "Then how is it that I seem to know exactly where I'm going?" to which Rick didn't have a good answer.
…
Meanwhile up in the temple, Harry surveyed his newly built mousetrap. Hearing the squeaks of nearby mice, Harry smiled as he carefully placed a small wedge of cheese on top of the trap. Suddenly some voices coming from entrance to the temple alerted Harry. Rick had warned Harry that temples were often the target of graverobbers and other undesirables looking to loot the valuables within for profit on the black market. Grabbing his bag, Harry quickly climbed up the ladder of a scaffolding platform and lay flat on his belly and peered over the edge of the platform to see three rough looking men enter the temple.
"Knock, knock! Anyone home~?" asked the first of the men. He was a bit on the pudgy side with a red bandanna around his head and in his hand, he held a revolver. Looking at his two companions he said to them, "You two check out that stuff and see if it's there." Cocking back the hammer of his pistol, he added, "I'll sort out the O'Connells."
Harry watched with bated breath as the fat man left down the corridor where his parents would doubtless be unaware of the three looters. Judging by the way the fat man said he would 'sort out' of the O'Connell's, it was obvious these men were hired to loot whatever was in this temple and eliminate Harry and his parents. But who would it be that would want to eliminate him and his parents, Harry wondered? There was a long list of dark and shady underworld characters who would pay big money for valuable antiquated artefacts from the ancient world, and Harry's parents had made some enemies of those on that list.
But that wasn't the problem right now, Harry had to figure out how to warn his parents that they were about to killed by looters and to do that, he would need to get past the other two looters first.
…
Further within the bowels of the temple, Evy entered a room that had a large door just up ahead. Suddenly a bout of dizziness and vertigo struck Evy and she waved her torch in front of her.
And suddenly it was as if Evy was transported back in time to ancient Egypt. Everything was clean and well lit. Evy realised that she was seeing another vision of Ancient Egypt. Then the door ahead opened with a deep grating groan. In the room beyond the door, two guards armed with khopesh swords and wearing armour stood on either side of a pedestal where upon a small bronze chest sat. And leaving the room was a woman wearing an ankle length gold dress, her dark hair smooth and straight. Her face Evy could not glimpse as she closed the large door and began to twist the knob. Evy watched how many turns and what direction the knob was turned in before the woman pushed the knob back and locked the door. The woman then began to walk towards Evy, but the vision faded away as Rick walked past Evy towards the door.
Evy blinked and looked around. She waved her torch in front of her trying to activate the vision she had just had, while Rick had stuck the end of his crowbar into the large door and was trying to open it.
Waving her torch, Evy only grew frustrated as she tried to have another vision. Rick noticed what his wife was doing and chose this moment to say, "You know if you do that fast enough, you can almost write your name?"
"I just had a vision," Evy said in a hushed voice. "It was like my dream, but it was… real. It was like I was actually here in ancient times!" she added.
"Well, if you really were here, would you help me open this door?" Rick asked irritably.
Evy passed Rick her torch. Taking hold of the doorknob, Evy pulled it out and began to twist and turn it in the directions she had seen in her vision. After pushing the knob back into the door, the door gave a loud hiss of compressed air and swung open to the surprise of Rick who said, "Okay, now you're starting to scare me!"
"I'm starting to scare myself," Evy admitted as they entered the room.
…
Harry watched as the two looters searched through the piles of ancient pottery. The first one was a tall skinny looking man wearing a large black hat on his head and Harry could hear him complaining. "Look at this junk! How are we gonna find it in all this? The Egyptians never had a clue!" he said loudly.
Smiling to himself, Harry pulled out the slingshot Uncle Jonathon had given to him as a Christmas present last year. Evy hadn't approved of the gift and although Rick seemingly agreed with her, he and Jonathon had given Harry some lessons on how to use the slingshot. Rick had even promised he'd teach Harry how to use a gun, if only to defend himself.
Some very thorough lessons later and Harry proved to be quite a good shot. Loading a small rock into the pocket of the slingshot, Harry took aim at the complaining looter. Pulling back the elastic band all the way, Harry breathed in slowly before releasing the band breathing out as he did. The stone zoomed towards its target and hit the looter in the side of his head.
"Ooowww!" the looter yelped out and his companion whipped his pistol aiming at him. "Jacques! Something 'it me 'ead!"
"Shut up Smithy!" the other looter said. "This place is cursed!" he hissed before he looked around fearfully and added, "We do not want to wake the Gods!"
…
Evy pulled away the thick dusty cobwebs of the standard that stood in the room behind the plinth and her eyes went wide as she saw the cartouche upon the aged brassy metal. "That's the emblem of the Scorpion King!" she exclaimed. "But he's supposed to be pure myth! No record of him was ever found, no artefacts, no historical evidence!" she said.
"Maybe they didn't want anyone finding him," Rick said grimly.
Unbeknownst to Rick and Evy, the leader of the three looters crept silently to the door and observed them.
"Help me open this chest, will you?" Evy then asked Rick who said, "I think that's a really bad idea."
"It's only a chest. No harm ever came from opening a chest!" Evy argued.
"Yeah and no harm ever came from a reading a book, remember how that turned out?" Rick said reminding Evy of how they had first met and their first brush with the horrors of the ancient world.
"Oh, come on! We can't stop now!" Evy said.
Rick sighed before handing over his crowbar and said, "Just remember I was the voice of reason here."
"For once," Evy said with a smirk on her lips as she took the crowbar from her husband and immediately set about trying to open the chest to see what lay within.
…
Harry watched as the two looters searched through the piles of rubble and he took aim with his slingshot at Smithy, this time aiming for his behind. Smirking to himself, Harry let loose his slingshot and scored a direct hit causing Smithy to scream in pain. Harry couldn't help but giggle, a little too loudly which made him wince as he realised he may have given the game away.
Down below, Jacques had heard someone giggle and looked up at the scaffolding that said against the wall. Jacques dark eyes narrowed as he realised that someone else was in this room and it was not the Gods he feared.
…
As Evy struggled to open the locked chest with the crowbar, Rick suddenly a small pendant that hung from a chain on the mummified headless corpse of the guard. It was almost disturbing to Rick to wonder just how blindly dedicated someone would have to be to forever stand guard in a locked room with potentially no food or water. He also wondered if those guards made that choice or were simply ordered to stand guard here for eternity. It was not a fun thing to ponder.
Taking hold of the pendant, Rick noted that it was a similar shape to the puzzle-box that opened the Book of the Dead. Shoving the memory of that cursed book aside, Rick tapped Evy's shoulder and held the pendant in front of her. "Let's try it your way, huh?" he said to her.
Evy took the pendant and fitted into the notched lock of the chest and twisted it. With a click, the chest opened to reveal what lay within.
A golden bracelet lay innocently in the chest. Hieroglyphs covered the metal and the centre piece of the bracelet was an ornate gold scorpion with a jackal head in place of a scorpion's face. Evy gave a gasp of awe. "The Bracelet of Anubis!" she exclaimed.
…
Harry took aim with his slingshot again and fired another stone at Smithy. But Jacques spun around and caught the stone in his hand and crushed it between his fingers. Standing up, Harry cursed himself for his own stupidity and now he was going to pay for it.
Smithy made move towards the scaffolding when Jacques placed his hand on his chest stopping him. "I'll take care of this," Jacques said with an evil smile as he drew the long curved knife sheathed in his belt.
…
The leader of the looters saw the Bracelet of Anubis in Evy's hands and prepared to take aim with his revolver when a sudden ominous rumbling rocked the passageway.
Alarmed Evy placed the Bracelet back in the chest to which Rick said, "I think it's a bit late for that!"
Evy closed the chest and held it out to Rick saying to him, "Put it in your rucksack!"
"I have a better idea; let's leave it here!" Rick said.
"I think it's a bit late for that!" Evy retorted.
"What does it say?" Rick asked as Evy read the hieroglyphics on the chest.
"He who disturbs this Bracelet shall drink from the Nile," Evy read out loud. "Oh, that doesn't sound too bad," she said optimistically.
The looter had fled down the passage just as the wall burst open and water came flooding through.
…
Jacques was already climbing up the ladder slowly towards Harry who was backing away trying to find some means of escape. "Jacques' gonna make a nice fillet outta you my son!" Smithy cackled.
"Jacques! Smithy!" The leader of Jacques and Smithy came running out. "Let's git outta 'ere!" he ordered.
"C'mon!" Smithy called out to Jacques who took a moment to look Harry in the eye, his dagger in his teeth. Sliding down the ladder to the floor, Jacques kicked out the supports which caused the scaffolding to tip and sway dangerously.
"Au revoir!" Jacques said before fleeing the temple with his fellow looters.
Harry yelled the scaffolding tip over and collided with the pillar. Leaping onto it, Harry held on for dear life as the pillar then fell back against another pillar which then fell against another pillar. The result was a domino effect as the pillars around the room fell against each other.
On the ground, Harry looked at the devastation he had just caused.
"Whoa," was all he could say.
…
Rick and Evy fled down the passage they came in hoping to reach the temple and their son when they came face to face with the flood of water from the Nile river flooding the passage. Seeing a side passage, Rick and Evy sprinted down it.
But to their despair, the passageway ended in a dead-end. The husband and wife braced themselves as they were suddenly bit by the wave of water and struggled to swim to the top of the water where a small barred grate rested at the top of the ceiling.
Gasping for breath, Rick spluttered, "This is really bad, Evy!"
Gasping for breath herself, Evy replied, "We've had bad before!"
"This is worse!" Rick said as the water rose higher and higher cutting them from any air.
…
As Harry wondered just how he was going to explain this to his adoptive parents, a deep groaning creak broke his train of thought. He looked over to see the last pillar was leaning dangerously towards the wall of the temple. In point of fact, that very wall had the cartouche of Rick's tattoo on it.
Panic rippled through Harry as he ran over and valiantly tried to push against the pillar. But Harry was only an eleven-year-old boy who obviously didn't have the strength to hold back the thousands year old column of ancient stone that bore down on the wall. With a scream of panic, Harry ran out from the pillar before it could fall on top of him. The pillar collided against the wall breaking to pieces and a great deluge of water came spilling out and riding out on the wave of water were Rick and Evy O'Connell, both gasping and choking for air and soaked to the bone.
"Mum… Dad… I can explain everything," Harry said to his parents who looked up at him.
TO BE CONTINUED…
A/N: There! The first chapter of this is done and dusted. I wanted to try writing this and see if it gains any traction and I hope some of you enjoyed this first chapter.
Obviously, in this story Harry takes the place of Alex as Rick and Evy's son after Evy suffered a miscarriage which is pleasant, but I wanted Harry to have the love of a family and also put away the Dursleys.
Now just to clarify and a spoiler alert, this will not be a corrupt-evil-manipulative Dumbledore fic. Some of those fics are entertaining, but they got really old, at least for me and I'd rather reconstruct Dumbledore then demonise him. So, the fact that Rick and Evy have adopted Harry as their own son will be surprising for Dumbledore but obviously he'll have found out that the Dursleys physically abused Harry and decided that it was probably better in the long run for Harry to be raised by the O'Connells and I think Dumbledore of all people would know the value of a loving family given his own mistakes with his family and Voldemort's childhood.
When you think about it, there are some disturbingly dangerous similarities between Harry and Voldemort's childhood; both grew up in cold, harsh even cruel environments as both were/are orphans and if things had gone differently, Harry could've been the next Voldemort. Nature vs. Nurture I would think.
Anyways, the first part of this story will follow The Mummy Returns movie before getting to Hogwarts and I might do a timeskip to the fourth book but I don't know how I'll do that without making it seemed rushed. I suppose I'll figure something out as I do.
Anyways, not much more to say so I'll leave this here and see you all in the next one.
Be kind to one another,
Angry lil.
