Ch 6

This one has medical stuff too

Henry woke up, but kept his eyes closed. This time he felt weird. It was like his body was wrong somehow. And he couldn't really feel most of it. Frowning, he opened his eyes and saw Ian sleeping next to him on the hospital bed. Kuhan was still slumbering in his arms. Henry looked down at his body, but it was still covered up. He reached down and started throwing the blanket off onto Ian until his torso was revealed.

He was bandaged from his pits all the way down to just above his crotch. Henry frowned further and peered more closely. The bandages were standard medical bandages and under that Henry saw layers of gauze. The thing most interesting was that over all of it was some sort of binding material. Was-was that holding his organs in place? Henry really had been on the verge of death.

The door opened and a tall person came in. She held a datapad and looked very doctor like. She gave a small, brief smile upon seeing Henry awake.

"They told me you woke up," she said, coming over to the bed. Ian mumbled sleepily and started to wake up. The doctor glanced at him, then at Henry, brow raised. Henry didn't say anything, just stared back expressionless.

"Yes, here I am," he said. He was sure he and Ian were quite the picture right now what with Ian practically sleeping on him and Kuhan in his arms.

"I'm glad, very glad. We weren't actually expecting you to wake up on your own for a couple more weeks," she said, looking at the heart rate monitor and tapping at her datapad.

"I guess I had other ideas," Henry said evenly.

"Indeed, indeed. Oh, where are my manners? I am Dr. Roselia Hammersmith, pleasure to meet you in person Dr. Wu," Hammersmith said. Henry nodded.

"Pleasure to meet you too."

"So... will you be willing to tell me what Dr. Malcolm claimed to have removed from you?"

"Uh, I told you, it was a big chunk of something that didn't belong there and the Indos ate it."

Henry turned his head to look at Ian, who winked at him. That was an extremely vague explanation, but he supposed that Ian hadn't had much time to come up with something. Henry shrugged.

"As Dr. Malcolm said."

"Ahem, of course, but if it was cancerous we need to know. You both are not human doctors, but Dr. Wu I'm sure you would have had some idea," Hammersmith sounded exasperated.

"There weren't any margins left when I got into the operating room?" Henry asked. He was never going to tell anyone what was really in there, and thankfully it seemed that Ian felt the same way.

"I told you, uh, that it was one solid thing and I detached it from all its attachments and then the Indos ate it. Oops, I guess they have a taste for human, uh, flesh now," Ian said, sliding off the bed with a chuckle. Henry pursed his lips to stop a smile.

"That is not something to joke about, Dr. Malcolm," he said.

"Well, uh, Dr. Wu, I think I have some wiggle room for saving your life," Ian said with a smirk. He stretched and his shirt rode up, both the other doctors staring for a second. Hammersmith cleared her throat.

"That doesn't really help us, Dr. Malcolm. And no, Dr. Wu, there was nothing left at all, save for the space where your organs should be. The surgeons, Drs. Mora and Quill, did an amazing job stitching you back together."

"Oh, um. Yes," Henry said, looking down for a second. Kuhan stirred a little and cuddled closer to him. He looked back up at Hammersmith.

"I'd like to hear about it," he said.

Hammersmith pursed her lips. "And I'd like to know what was in you to cause such dislocation. I've never seen anything like it, much less seen anything survive something even a fraction as debilitating as what you went through," her face softened.

"We were all afraid for you, Dr. Wu. You're too important for any of us to give up on."

"I was the most afraid, though," Ian said. He leaned down to give Henry a kiss, who hesitated for a second, but then kissed back fiercely.

"Oh," Hammersmith said softly as Ian pulled back. Her cheeks were a bit red now and her eyes were brighter. Ian smirked yet again and excused himself to go piss and get a snack.

"Alright, so, um," Hammersmith stammered, bringing up the datapad to hide her face for a second. "Right. So, the operation. It took 20 hours as the surgeons had to first get some of your organs working fully again and you were on dialysis for most of it. They did. They did get your liver and kidneys back under control. Your lungs and diaphragm were the worst affected. Your right lung had collapsed and your diaphragm was taking up the space where it should have been."

As Henry listened he looked down at Kuhan again. He'd almost died for this little dinosaur. He suddenly didn't know how to feel about the whole thing anymore.

"You had to be on a respirator for most of the time while you were in a coma. We tried an experimental medication that thankfully restored a lot of lung function. I can send you the files on that," Hammersmith said, and tapped on her tablet a few times.

"Alright. So now you are off dialysis and the respirator, but we really can't let you go for another few weeks. Your organs, most of them, are in surgical meshes to keep them in place. Your viscera needs to fill back in so there isn't a negative space in your abdomen anymore. You have seen that you are wearing a binding bandage. This is to ensure the negative pressure space doesn't open back up inside your torso. You have to wear this all of the time until your organs are more healed. The re-bandaging process should be easier now that you are awake, however."

Henry took it all in quietly. He rubbed a thumb idly over Kuhan's head, mulling things over.

"So that's your little experiment?" Hammersmith asked, eyes wide and curious as she looked at Kuhan.

"Oh, yes. My experiment. What did Dr.-Ian tell you?" Hammersmith had seen them kiss, so Henry supposed it was appropriate enough for first names.

"That was what you were working on somehow with the Indos when you had your—issue," she said, stepping just a bit closer to the bed. Henry felt protective again, but he shakily held Kuhan closer to the other doctor.

"You can touch him. Just be gentle. He's very fragile."

"So he's male?" Hammersmith asked curiously as she reached a hand out to run a finger gently along Kuhan's head. Green eyes blinked a few times and Kuhan made a funny noise before rolling back against Henry.

"Wow, smooth. He seems to really like you," she said softly. Henry could tell she was a dinosaur fan. Why else would she be a doctor on a remote island?

"I suppose so," Henry said. He felt weak and weird at the moment so he lay his head back.

"Oh, so sorry! I'll get the nurses to give you your meds and a feeding," Hammersmith said as she turned to the door.

"A feeding?" Henry echoed.

Hammersmith stopped and pointed to Henry's side. To his dismay he saw a wrapped up tube sticking out of him. He sighed and just nodded.

"I'm sorry, but it was the safest way to get nutrients into you. There is no way you can deal with solids at the moment," Hammersmith said, and left. Henry looked down at Kuhan again. Was this dinosaur really worth all of this? Ian came back in and saw Henry looking at his feeding tube. He tried to cheer him up and took Kuhan from him upon seeing the unhappy expression with which Henry was now looking at the dinosaur. The nurses came back and Henry insisted on feeding himself, but the nurses would only let him if he was supervised this time. He did it flawlessly and they were satisfied that he could do it himself. They checked his vitals and gave him more meds before leaving. Ian slid up next to him and nuzzled him and showered him with affection, but Henry was feeling worse and worse about the strange thing that happened to him.

Was Kuhan really worth it?

Henry fell asleep soon after thanks to the meds.

Ian brought Henry datapads and kissed him a lot and cuddled up to him a bunch and Henry was sure that if there were rumors about them, they weren't just rumors anymore. He didn't care though. Let the world know they were gay.

Henry grew colder towards Kuhan and Ian was left to mostly take care of him. Kuhan really did seem to know where he came from though, as he would throw weak little fits when Henry wouldn't hold him for a long time. Every time Henry had the baby in his arms he didn't know what to feel anymore. This had been unwanted, unknown, experimental, and potentially deadly.

Somehow Ian and Henry convinced Hammersmith to let Henry out of the hospital after just another week. He could sit up on his own now with help from the brace that kept him in one piece, and that was good enough for Henry. Ian happily wheeled him and Kuhan out of the hospital and into the back of a Jeep© despite the wishes of Hammersmith and every single other human doctor on the island.

They returned to the main lab where Henry had his main abode, and to his astonishment all of the scientists were there to greet them. They cheered and a few had presents with subtle rainbows on them. Henry had no idea how to feel. He accepted the gifts and held them on his lap as Ian slowly wheeled him through towards the living area. The scientists followed them and asked questions about Kuhan until they got to the door to Henry's apartment. Ian opened it, but then swooped down to give Henry a huge, sloppy kiss. More cheers and almost every phone was recording. Henry flushed deeply and ducked his head and thankfully Ian was done with his grandstanding and wheeled them inside.

Ian helped Henry onto the bed. Kuhan slumped next to his mother and Ian got up next to them both. At least Henry was out of the hospital for the rest of the healing process. Everything would be better now, even though he had started having intrusive thoughts of slipping the needle of a syringe into Kuhan's neck and watching the life fade away.

Everything did go well until two days later when the doctors found out that a volcanic explosion was threatening Isla Nublar.
