Episode 001: The Magic Begins: x774-x784!

Hargeon, Fiore- July 3, X784

The salty smell of the sea greeted me when I finally arrived in this town. It was my first time here in such some time, but I wasn't here for casual sightseeing. The luggage I carried beside me lean to my thighs while taking in some of the sights. I let out a stretch, my arms over my head and my shoulders feeling less stiff. I only just had my birthday the day before yesterday, I was finally seventeen, and have grown a lot these few years. Letting my arms slack down downwards, I looked myself over on my appearance. My favorite Heart Kruz clothing of blue and white, I made sure I didn't miss anything. A pouch with a keyring I looked over, seeing the six keys I had in my possession. A black leather whip was on my right hip, just before I eyed the partly cloudy sky. The summer air felt nice, that it only occurred to me how long it's been. I was seven when I started my magical journey. Little did I know that things would change drastically for me in my life.

So many years, a rough number of seven or more years, that my life changed… when everything changed…

Lucky Lucy…

I never put into thought what my name meant, but I was always called that since I was noticeably young. My momma Layla told me that my name was very special, it had to do with how my parents met. She said one day she'll tell me. I didn't have too many memories when I was real little. I remember these faint memories of crawling in a room, to my footsteps, small and softly, would walk hand in hand through the hallway. After my fifth birthday, things were more vivid, I remember my mom showing me her Celestial Spirits, magical beings that existed in another world. I always loved them and dreamed to be just like Momma. It would take some time before that happen. My small body at the time wasn't prepared to form contracts yet, the means to bind spirit and wizard, but I was still eager. I would continue my studies, or spend time with mom, on one occasion, it was me and her. My seventh birthday arrived, so I had more free time with momma.

"Momma, are you going to show me one of your Spirits today?" I asked eagerly, my eyes lit up with excitement.

"Later, Lucy. I want to share with you something that I feel might help you," Momma explained, the two of us were sitting out in the garden since it was after my birthday and I finished some of my studies, I had a break. Father was always busy, so most of my time was with momma.

She was the prettiest woman I have ever seen, and I didn't have other figures to compare her. She had soft brown eyes along with long blonde hair, which she wore in a bun along with a lacy baby pink band with ruffles on its edges which rests on her hair with her flicks and strands of hair framing her face. She also was wearing a long dress that went all the way down to her ankles. While the top of her dress was pink, the skirt of her dress was purple.

"Well, what is it?" I asked.

Sitting on mommy's lap, she had a package wrapped in paper. Momma had to go somewhere, but she doesn't tell us what she does. She says she sees someone in the capital and comes back. She doesn't tell daddy and me about her meetings, all we know is that she is very calm about it.

"In a few years, you'll be able to summon a spirit, but your magic is as limited as opening gates takes so much magic to use until you become strong enough to handle the strain. Until then, strengthening yourself another way will help the strain be less over time," and she passed it over the package to me to have, "Now that my little Lucy is seven now, I want you to have this as your present,"

"Thank you, momma!" I exclaimed happily, already ripping the wrapping paper from the present. What I saw was a book. The book was brown with yellow letters that read 'Star Make'. It was a very thick book that I could hold with just one hand. Then again, I love books, so it wasn't out of the ordinary for me to have one.

"I discovered this on my trips and feel you should have it. Call it my big present to you," she told me, "Star-Make, it's vastly different from my holder type magic with Celestial Spirits,"

"Caster type?" I asked, a little confused. Momma giggled, but I didn't know why she laughed, was it something funny?

"Right, I'll explain. There two types of wizards, Caster, and holders. I was a holder type, with my Celestial Spirits. Caster magic, is," she stopped for a moment and put a hand to stomach, "It's magic you learn from more within,"

"Like my tummy?" I questioned.

"Kind of, but a Caster Wizard is more physical than Holder type. Hmm," she thought for a moment and put her hands back on her lap, "I guess it's too complicated to explain to you while you're so young. I know father has you studying so young, I guess explaining to you while you're still seven will take time. Just read and then once you're older, practice. I want to see your first creation, promise?" she asked and held a pinky to me. She took my pinky and wrapped it around.

"Promise!" I exclaimed cheerfully.

I remember that, even though I know those basics. There are two types of wizards, those who can use magic like my momma. Holder types are wizards who use magic items to use magic. Caster types are wizards who learn magic and have these powers more developed within them. That's what I read in some books though. I didn't get all that, but Wizards didn't call come the same way as My momma's spirits. But that idea of people using magical tools made me giggle. Like some waving a stick around to cast magic, how does it work?

"Star Make is a caster type and molding magic, creating things from stars, the little lights you see in the sky," she said, "It's not too much magic, as long you know the basics in using it. I might have given up the days of a wizard, but I want you to always be happy, as a Celestial Spirit Wizard."

"I do want to be happy! I love Spirits!" I exclaimed happily.

"That's my girl. Now, I will be remarkably busy for a bit, so I won't be able to help you with your studies. So, be a good girl, and try not to make a fuss for daddy," she said, holding out a finger up and winked. I giggled at her brightly.

"I will!" I hugged my momma and ran off back to my room in the estate, out of sight and earshot of momma.

Watching Lucy leave, Layla looked at her only daughter, before looking at a book Lucy didn't see. It was a journal, which her mother passed down to her. She smiled and stared at the sky. There were… things she never told anyone, her husband Jude, or their Lucky Lucy, but this wasn't for them to know. It was her duty, her family's lineage, that she waited in this era. Even then, she hopes that once it was completed and the task her ancestors passed down to her, she can enjoy the rest of her life with her family. That Lucy wouldn't have to be a part of this, that keeping her secrets from her new family wasn't what she wanted to do. Even then, she'll have to collect the last three keys again, while she has planned to pass these keys to her, it is the matter if this plan goes wrong, and it means Lucy will have to take her place. As upsetting as it was, she needed to want a few more years.

"Open in the year 777… I just hope it works…"

For the next two years, I practiced between studies on how to learn Star Make. It wasn't too complex; it was like reading a novel and remembering the story. For the first few days, I could create something for a few minutes, and it vanished. As time went on, I could create something for an exceptionally long time before making it vanish. As my ninth birthday was reaching, it was still hard. I could never make something last it was difficult. But I didn't cry, but it was difficult. Sometimes, I attempt to make things, which makes me sleepy. I didn't get it, but with every attempt, I was struggling, I get sleepy. I'd usually go to my bed, but most times I am at my desk.

"Star Make!" I explained, once again, trying to make something. I had to do it, I must keep my promise to mamma, that my first creation I show her. I need something she likes, something that would make her happy. From my hands, a magic circle conjured my hands, something taking shape. I could do this. Think of something she likes. What will she like? Does Momma like jewelry, a ring? I imagine first something to fit on her finger, I imagine a gem, now concentrate. I could see something shaping, it was coming in, but the moment I was happy, the magic circle vanished, and the shape was gone.

"Aww, I was so close!" I pouted in frustration and crossed my arms with a huff. But magic does take time, I've only learned since I was seven so maybe this wasn't as easy as Celestial Spirits. I wasn't putting much thought into it. Sleeping might help, so I walked back to my bed and reflected. Maybe if I was older, I could create things just right. Closing my eyes, I dreamed of the many things I could make that my mind was racing with ideas. I remembered, being lifted off the covers and into the warm sheets as I was drifting to sleep. I could blankly remember parts where my momma and daddy would talk, not sure if I was dreaming or not.

"She's been sleeping a lot more lately, is there a reason?" Jude asked after tucking Lucy into her bed.

"Just magic training," Layla answered.

"I thought you retired from being a wizard?" Jude asked sternly.

"Not completely, I wanted to give Lucy a present years ago and this came to mind. She loves her books, a magic book will be something that she'll love," Layla explained, hands to her front. Jude sighed, seeing the small head of Lucy's head before taking a seat at the foot of the bed, his hands on his lap.

"I thought we at most move past the guild stuff, with my business, our family. You sure you want her to follow your path, Layla?" he asked concernedly.

"That's up for Lucy to decide her future, we can't decide for her," Layla answered before kneeling to her husband's forehead hovered her head on it, "I want Lucy to love Spirits as much as I did, I want her to follow her dreams as I would,"

"If you say so," Jude replied.

Follow my dreams, what was my dream? Well for one, it's to be a novelist, to write a great story. I am also curious about looking for the twelve Zodiac keys. Momma had three in her possession, one of them a mermaid Aquarius and Cancer, who uses a pair of scissors to cut hair. There was a third key, but I never saw him before, I wonder where he went? But I do want to be a writer and find all the keys, but I'll wait until I am much older for that. I want to stay here with Momma and Daddy, forever.

I wish it did last forever...

The Residence appears to consist of two separate buildings, placed near a group of smaller constructions and linked together by a garden, with the front one acting as an entry of sort for the one sitting behind it. Only this first building has been clearly shown: it seems to consist of the main structure flanked by two minor wings protruding upwards, creating a square space before the entrance itself, which sits in the center of the facade, being flanked by two slender cylindrical towers with pointed tiled roofs, their walls adorned by elongated, hollow windows with arched tops. Two balconies appear to sit one above the other between such towers, topping the main door, and sitting on the highest one's summit is another, larger and rectangular tower, sporting a high, pyramid-shaped tiled roof held up by pillars, which, on its top part, bears more, smaller pillars, holding up the tiled spire topping the whole structure. The roof of the main section is similarly tiled and pitched, but the windows adorning its front walls are shown to be rectangular, and sports glasses. While the wing right from the entrance hasn't been properly shown, it is likely similar to the one sitting to the left: split into two parts, with the one adjacent to the main structure possessing features similar to it, sporting rectangular windows and is topped by a pitched tiled roof; the one to the latter's right, however, is noticeably shorter in height, bears a large, decorative double door, occupying most of its outermost face, and two towers adorning the top of the very same face, being covered in several small arrow slits and growing larger near their top part, ending in pyramid-shaped tiled roofs.

The buildings sit in a built-up area which is large enough to mistake it for a city, leading to the structure is a well-kept road which, some meters before its entrance, crosses with one more street, forming a crossroad in whose center is a fountain, possessing a circular pool and emitting water from a slender structure in its central part; flanking the roads converging here are well-kept bushes, and similarly well-kept hedges are located among the buildings present in the area.

When I wasn't doing my studies in my room or practice, I play in the garden. As long I didn't bother the staff, it was my playground. A pretty time to practice.

I turned nine today, I was still roughly small, but I felt my magic becoming stronger. Momma explained that wizards have a container, where our magic is stored. Our container would empty, and it would take time to fill it up again. I didn't understand it as much, but it seems like my magic recovers, like a band-aid over a cut. The sky was noticeably clear today, I wanted to spend the day doing what I like best.

"Star Make Frisbee!" I exclaimed, forming a gold-throwing disc into my hands. This was the first real thing I made, but I never got a chance to show it to momma. I wanted my first creation to be the ring. I held it in my hands, feeling the material feel like thin plastic, it was amazing. With a flick of my wrist, I sent it flying across the garden. Being small, it wasn't like it was flying, but it went as far as our pond, skimming the surface before just floating in the pond. I pouted and ran as far as my little legs could give me. I made it to the pond but was annoyed it was so far away. I could let it vanish, but I still wanted to get it back. I was by the edge of the pond, thinking how I could get it. Asking one of the grown-ups would be easy, but I don't want to bother them. I could use something like a makeshift boat, or…?

"Ms. Lucy?" a young voice called for me, making me flinch, and immediately I fell into the pond.

"Honestly, Ms. Lucy, what were you doing out there, a child like you shouldn't be trying to swim in the pond," the maid's voice was muffled by the towel she was using over my hair. I changed out of my wet clothes and into fresher ones, but I did feel horrible for worrying her.

"I'm sorry," I said apologetically, and the towel was off my now dry hair. I looked at the maid, who only smiled at me. I guess the staff didn't know my magic escapade yet, so they didn't know what I was up to.

"It's all right but be careful. You're Master Jude's and Lady Layla's Lucy, they worry if you got hurt," she said.

That's right, I'm their daughter, I am the heiress of this family, and honestly… I don't think of myself that way. All the staff is very kind to me, the dress, the food, it's excellent… but I don't feel like it's for me. All the money isn't important to me. I love my momma and daddy, but I want to do more. I can't wait to be a grown-up and see the world before me. When I watch the maid leave, I decided to keep practicing. Something like a toy wouldn't be great practice, let's practice something smaller.

I walked over to my toys, some of them that looked like some seams were splitting. Normally I let the staff do it when they see me upset, but I wanted to fix at least one doll. I picked up my favorite, her dark blonde hair, and blue eyes, which I've had for quite some time. I saw a seam on her dress was splitting, so I put the doll on my bed facing me and held my right hand out

"Star Make: Thread," I chanted, seeing the thin yellow threads leave my hand towards the seam. Like magic, the thread stitched itself together and sealed the tear. I admired my handy work, if momma and daddy weren't always busy, I'd show them my challenging work.

"There you go Gonzalez, good as new!" I said cheerfully and put her back where she was. It was very lonely, she was my favorite doll and like my little sister. Making sure she was okay was all I can do for her. I wonder, if she was a real girl, then I could finally have a sister. But it's just a silly dream. I just have to wait a few more years, I can do this.

When I get older, I want to be a full-fledged wizard and join a real wizard guild. No more of these business lessons, I want to do things, and see beyond this place. I'm going to keep working hard here, then when I am older, I'll make my own choices, I won't want to bother momma and daddy, I can take good care of myself.

The year x777, my tenth birthday was coming, and I was inching away to be a grown-up. A year came and went, now I felt more ready to make that ring. I held out my hands, concentrating on the ring, and created my magic circle. I watched a shape being formed. The strain lessened, I focused more on creating the ring. When the magic circle completed its creation, a golden ring landed softly in my hand. It was a gold ring band, with a golden emerald created. I did it, I made the ring. I wanted to be excited, but no time for that.

"Momma, I got to show it to Momma!" and I ran out of the room hastily. I hurried to the foyer, remembering Mom was going to leave again. Mom seems worried when another year passed, that she was almost frantic. Momma had to go to the Capital again, and I remember, she needed something for this important day. When she left for the capital, on the Eve of my birthday, she hugged me goodbye and told me something that I wished that day, I wished those weren't her last real words to me.

"I'll be home soon,"

"Here!" I didn't want Momma to feel I didn't make anything, so gave her the ring, "For luck!"

"You made this?" she asked. I nodded happily. Momma hugged me, feeling warm in her arms.

"Good job, dear, I'll see you soon," and she walked out the estate, and I waved, she'll be back, then I keep showing her more and more!

July of the year 777, there was an eyewitness that saw several shooting stars in the sky, I remember seeing one, hoping, praying mom would come home. The next morning, mom came home, she greets dad and me when she returned home, but something was wrong with her, something, the young me, didn't understand and it was too late...

On the seventh day of the seventh month of the seventh year, mom passed on to the afterlife.

Mom's death did us all hard, no one expecting her to die at such a youthful age. The doctors said she had Magic Deficiency Disease, but she retired from wizard work because of her health, but why did her health get worse? After Mom's death, a lot of things changed. Dad started to seem more focused on his work and was busier than ever. The staff still gave me love and attention, at least I wouldn't feel lonely without her.

After Mom's death, I became the owner of two of her keys: The Water Bearer Aquarius and the Giant Crab, Cancer. They were at least more company as I have gotten much older. And as for Dad, his tone was much colder. Around my 12th birthday, dad got furious at me for trying to give him something to eat. It was like he didn't care for me at all after Mom died. Just do your lessons, Lucy, that's all I did.

The book mom gave me of Star Make, I finally finished the beginner magic, now I was learning advanced things. I kept my childhood routine, not to make anything that could get anyone hurt. When I was getting home one day, my carriage was running crazy and a girl saved me, she had a guild crest, the guild crest of Fairy Tail. They were an incredibly famous guild that grew in popularity when I was young, that I couldn't wait to join a guild soon.

More years passed and Father just was colder to me, it's like he didn't care about me anymore. He may be a businessman, but the life he has isn't the life I wanted. Around x782, besides my two gold keys, I was still curious about looking for more keys. I'd asked some of the staff about sightings on keys. So far, nothing so far, except getting three keys from the staff's insight. The Southern Cross, Crux, the Clock, Horologium, and the Lyre, Lyra. Grandpa Crux helped me learned more about the Celestial Spirit World and Spirits as well. When another year pass, I finally couldn't take it. Living here, this estate…. Was suffocating.

X783 hits and my impatience with being here was insufferable. I needed to leave, I had to leave. I sat in my room, the usual studying, and the like. I was already sick of it. I need to leave and pursue my dream, not being the heiress of this family. A knock came to my door one day and I put my Star Make Book away, bookmarking the advanced pages on types of weapons and spells when a voice spoke from behind the door.

"Lucy dear?" the female voice asked.

"It's unlocked!" I called and my bedroom door swung up and Ms. Spetto stood by the door frame and bowed. Spetto was a short, middle-aged woman with a square-shaped face. She has long, dark purple hair tied in a ponytail behind her head and black eyes. Like most of the maids working here, her attire is that of the profession she practices, consisting of a long, green dress with pink-colored sleeves with golden edges, complete with larger cuffs, an apron tied around her waist, a small mantle covering her shoulders and simple shoes. In addition, she also has a classical maid hat on her head.

"Lucy dear, your father wishes to see you in his office," Spetto explained. I sighed, what did he want now?

"Okay Spetto, I will be there shortly." I got up out of my chair, straightened my dress, and put the magic book that I've had been studying for the last six years in my special place where I keep all my memories of my mom. Once I was ready, I head to my father's office. I took a deep breath and walked inside.

"I'm here Father, what is it you need for me," I asked.

Father sat at the desk, seeing his daughter had walked closer to him.

"I wish for you to stay here with me and learn the family business, I expect you to get married to a wealthy gentleman and birth me a son. Stop learning that pointless magic stuff. Your future is at stake here. Magic is not going to help you at all." he immediately said, and I felt devastated. Give up magic for my future, and why I need to stay here. I kept my temper in check, if I shout, he'll get mad at me.

"But Father, I'm not going to give up magic, you know that for a fact. I have been learning magic for the past several years. I'm getting better each year. There is no way I'm giving up. Mother never wanted me to give up. You should feel the same way. I want," my words were hard to come out, but said strongly, "I want to be like mom."

"Your mother has been gone for six years, isn't it time you gave up your childish dream of being a wizard and joining a magic guild?" he asked her. I stepped back, wanting to scream and shout and him, but I nodded, although my words weren't true.

"I understand father..." and I walked out of the room and returned to my room, closed the door and I was furious. Why does he decide what I want to do, why does he say that about mom? I've spent my life being part of this family, all I wanted was to keep my parents happy, but all father cares for is his business, not me. I don't need to be here anymore around someone who doesn't care for me and decides my future. I'm going to continue being a wizard, that's what Mom wants.

"Father doesn't need me anyway, he has his business to keep him happy…" I said, feeling my eyes starting to water. I rub my eyes and look at myself in the mirror. This wasn't me, seeing the pretty dress I wore, this wasn't the life I wanted, a life that was thrust upon me . I changed clothes immediately and started to pack my suitcase with clothes, books, the money I've saved up, and everything I'd need. I changed to my favorite outfit, the white and blue heart Kruz cross top, and a blue skirt. I fasten my key ring pouch and whip I bought on one of my trips, I figured a weapon would be sufficient the day I leave. I made sure to pack my Star Make book, and enough extra clothes to survive on. It might take some time, but I'll travel on searching for the Celestial Spirit gate keys, and then I'll join a magic Guild. With everything packed, I took one last look around this room. I was happy when Mom was alive, now it feels cold, that my future is tied to this estate. I'm no Lucky Lucy... I just, want to be Lucy.

And in the black of the night, I left the estate, never to look back.

"A full year has passed, and I've been doing okay myself," I said to myself, still staring at the sky, "Not much happened since I left. Besides that commotion where someone was making trouble, I've been doing okay,"

In the year since I ran away, I was able to make a contract with a new key. He's… bit of a pervert, but I expect to keep him safe, same as the others. I hope I find a new key; my searches haven't been great. The funds I haven't wasted since I left, so I took some part-time jobs and slept from hotel to hotel, moving from small city to city, just sometimes I have a roof over my head, but I wasn't complaining. I kept working hard to earn some money, as long as I had enough, I could rent an apartment soon. Hargeon was my major visit, hoping this would give me results with gate keys. I can't stand around, time to look for more gate keys.

I didn't know that day, my visit to Hargeon would change me forever… My name is Lucy, and I want to join a Wizard Guild...

"We should arrive at Hargeon today, we left early…" a small voice said, looking out into the vast land that was passing him.

"Yeah… we should…. Can we get off soon…?" another voice spoke, their face pale.

"Sorry Setsu, we know you don't like transportation, but it's the only way to Hargeon as quick as possible," another small voice said apologetically.

"Thank you… Shiro…" the girl replied, before slumping to her seat.

"We'll be there soon Setsuko, don't worry," a fourth occupant said, her hands on her lap. Despite wanting to throw up, Setsuko looked up with a weak smile at her friend.

"Thank you Lisanna…" and lower her head down.

Lisanna looked from her three companions: a blue-furred cat, a white cat, and a young woman who was ready to vomit her insides. While not the best companions they were her friends. She looks out the window herself, staring out the window staring at the rolling valleys and plains before her. She looks down at herself, the memento of her best friend, a white scarf with a dragon scale pattern, was wrapped around her neck. Her lips pursed into a smile, watching everything pass her by.

Six years, and I've felt I've known these people for a long time. My name is Lisanna, and my unlucky group is visiting Hargeon, what we'll find might lead us to an old friend and something he was looking for.

I didn't know that meeting this person this day... Would lead me to a great adventure...

To Be Continued...

Next Time: Having arrived in Hargeon, Lucy sets out to find any magic shop at all. Yes, she does indeed know that Hargeon is more of a fishing town, but that doesn't mean that she won't find a magic shop somewhere in town. Maybe even make some new friends.

Next Time in Starry Heavens: A Different Story - Episode 002: From Hargeon to Magnolia-Enter: The Fairy Tail! may be coming a lot sooner than you think!

Author's Note:

I really wanted to do more with this chapter, I fixed a few things, but I kept the chapter the way it was for the most part. The original version of this chapter, I didn't really do much with. Yes, it was a lot longer, but I really couldn't figure out anything to add to this re-worked chapter by my friend and Beta Reader. It's so frustrating when you want to try to add more to something, but you can't think of anything to add. Anyway, I have to say that this chapter is a lot better than the original chapter was. In all honesty, the original version of this chapter didn't make much sense at all, I'm glad I had someone look it over and re-work it. Although, it's much shorter than the original chapter was, I hope it's a lot better. I'm going to re-work the next two chapters of this story to hopefully make it at least a little bit better.

Catch you on the flip-side,

~AshK1980
