Street paused for a second in the doorway to Chris's hospital room. The sight of her safe and asleep in front of him helped him to believe this wasn't another nightmare he was just about to wake up from. As he stepped into the room she stirred. The nurse, who had entered the room in front of him, stepped forwards.
'Hi, can you hear me,' she asked kindly. Chris opened her eyes and nodded at the nurse.
'Chris,' Street stepped forwards a smile on his face. The nurse took a step back letting the two have a moment.
'Jamie,' her voice came out horse and Street miss took the word for Jimmy.
'Chris, what happened,' she asked. Street looked confused, had she just called him Chris?
'Don't you remember?' He asked wondering how hard she had hit her head.
'No,' she looked a bit panicked.
'It's ok, you're safe now. I'm here,' he moved to take her hand, but stopped when she scooted across the bed to get away from him.
'Chris it's me Street,' he held his position fear filling him as he watched her reaction to him. Was she angry that he had left her?
'I think you've got the wrong person, I'm not Chris. My name is Jamie,' Street didn't know what to do with that piece of information.
'I'll be right back,' he said leaving the room. The nurse had stayed with Chris just like the doctor had told her to do, but this hadn't played out how she had expected.
'Hi, did you say it was Jamie?' she asked the young woman lying in front of her.
'Yeah.'
'Can I take a few details for our records?' she asked wondering if it could be true. Was this woman actually Jamie? She nodded and moved into a sitting position to answer the questions.
'Doctor,' Street shouted down the hallway at the doctor. He was just leaving the waiting room. 'Something is wrong,' the rest of the team appeared at the door at the sound of Street shouting.
'What's happened?' Hondo jumped in. He was used to being in charge.
'She doesn't know who she is. She just told me her name is Jamie,' Street looked like a rabbit in headlights. He didn't know whether he was coming or going. He just wanted his Chris back, not this new woman who was claiming to be Jamie.
'Mr Street I need you to calm down,' the doctor was convinced this was a rouse for Chris to get away from him.
'She doesn't know who she is,' he was all but shouting.
'Street.' Hondo pulled out his official tone and Street went quiet. His arms went to his sides and he looked at Hondo. 'The doctor has just informed us that Chris has some injuries. One of them is a healed bullet wound to the head.' Hondo thought for a second that Street was going to pass out. He swayed slightly on his feet, but stayed upright. He looked across at the doctor expectantly but the doctor didn't say anything to him.
'Do you think,' Street paused trying to find words he could actually get out of his mouth, 'she has brain damage?'
'We won't know anything until we've done some tests. She's going up for a scan soon. We will know more after that. How about you all go and get a coffee and come back in an hour or so,' he suggested.
'What other injuries does she have?' Street asked, ruining the doctors plan to get them out of the way so he could have a conversation with Chris alone.
'Extensive bruising, especially to her torso. She is seriously malnourished. She's going to be in here for at least a few weeks while we try and get her weight under control. We may have to admit her to a program.' Street didn't know what to say, maybe this was another one of his nightmares after all.
'Will you come and look at her?' Street asked, his voice was pleading. All he wanted to do was go back to Chris, but what was he meant to do if she didn't even know who she was right now.
'After you,' the doctor couldn't refuse his request and walked down the corridor alongside Street. They could see the nurse sitting and talking with Chris through the window as they approached. The rest of the team hovered behind them, not knowing if they were going for coffee or waiting for news.
'EVERYONE DOWN,' a shout came from down the corridor in front of them. Street's hand went straight to his weapon. He had it unholstered by the time three armed men came into sight. There were screams from patients and staff as the men made their way down the corridor. They stopped, weapons aiming at Street as they realised he was there with his weapon trained on them. The doctor had stepped behind Street shielding himself from any bullets that may come his way.
They were in a stand off. The men were obviously not expecting to be met with a SWAT officer.
'We're here for Jamie. Hand her over and no-one gets hurt,' Street was stunned. Did they mean Chris? She had said her name was Jamie.
'I'm not handing anyone over. SWAT is in the building, the best thing you can do is surrender yourselves now,' they had shaken him. He wasn't letting anyone take Chris. The laugh he received rivalled that of a Disney villain.
'We're here for Jamie hand her over or we will come and take her. I don't care how many people we have to hurt to get her,' the man doing all the talking was taking slow steps up the corridor towards them, glancing into the rooms as he went.
'Stop where you are,' Hondo's voice came over Street's shoulder. The team were behind him now.
'JAMIE,' the guy shouted. He had stopped walking and was holding the stand off with SWAT in the now empty corridor. Street's heart skipped a beat as the door to Chris's room opened and she stood, in a hospital gown, in the doorway.
'Chris go back inside,' Hondo ordered her, praying that she was going to listen to him. She was never one for backing down from a fight. He looked at the shell of the woman he knew and cursed her when she didn't do as he said.
'Time to go,' the guy spoke directly to Chris this time. She didn't hesitate, she stepped out into no-mans-land heading straight for this stranger.
'Chris don't do this,' Street's pleaded, but it fell on deaf ears.
'Don't take another step,' Chris turned to look at Hondo. She had fear in her eyes as she looked down the barrel of his gun. And then in a move no-one could have predicted she made a dash for it; straight into the arms of this man, tucking herself to his side. He held her close with one arm around her shoulders. His gun was in his other hand still holding up the stand-off.
Street froze. His brain shut off as he watched Chris in another mans arms. Even his nightmares had never been this awful. She had always been taken from him, not willingly ran away. He physically hurt watching how she cowered into this guy for protection; cowered from him. He had never seen Chris cower before and if he had been able think at that moment he would have realised that she wasn't herself.
The team watched helplessly as they started backing away down the corridor. They turned the corner disappearing out of sight.
Street started running for them, he rounded the corner at full speed. He wasn't going to let this happen. The man held Chris more tightly and started shooting down the corridor at him. Screams erupted from the rooms around them as the gunshots started. Street hit the floor hard. Lucky shot was all he could think as he started gasping for breath. The team dashed towards him.
'Vest,' Street gasps, letting them know he was ok. The gun men and Chris had reached the end of the corridor, they were heading towards the stairs.
'Anyone follows us. I shoot everyone I see,' the team stopped know that this guy was going to go past a lot of innocent people before they made it out of the building. The guns were all aiming at each other but the shooting had stopped. Street couldn't tare his eyes from Chris. She was looking at him on the floor. Street was almost convinced that she looked worried about him, maybe she wasn't completely lost.
