Two days ago at HQ
'I had her,' Tan vented. It had been hours since his run in with Chris.
'Dude, you should have known she would whip your ass,' Luca found the funny side. Throwing a fresh ice pack in Tan's direction. They had already done the leg work searching through the CCTV and had come up empty.
'If I thought she could take me I wouldn't have pulled the first punch,' Tan had been worried about hurting her. She had injuries, was just in hospital and looked like she would have the strength of a new born baby. Instead she had taken him unaware. Landed more than a couple of good blows and he had come off the definite loser. He had only managed to get in one good punch, and he felt awful for it. The worse thing was that he had lost her again.
'You should have known better. She was never going to come quietly,' Luca still had a cheeky glint in his eye imagining Chris taking him down. Tan almost wished that he had chosen another member of the team to call in early to help him track her down, she would lead them to Street. Luca was proving to be a pain in his arse.
'Come on; don't tell me you would have gone all out?' Tan defended himself and brought a serious tone into the conversation.
'She still gave you that shiner. Now keep the ice on,' Luca pulled them drinks out of the fridge and passed one to Tan.
'How you feeling?' Deacon joined them in the kitchen.
'Fine,' Tan gave Luca a death glare while holding the ice pack to his face.
'Just hurt pride,' Luca jabbed, the death glare wasn't enough to stop him. 'Want to watch the CCTV of Chris handing his ass to him?' Luca already had it ready to play on his tablet, and well how could Deac refuse.
Tan refused to watch the images of the convenience store. He'd had a tip from one of his CIs early this morning before work, and raced over there. He couldn't believe it when it was actually her. He had underestimated her, but he didn't admit that to Luca and Deacon.
He held the ice pack to his swelling face refusing to look at the pair watching the tablet.
'She's got better at that,' Deac commented. Was he just helping Tan save face? Tan didn't know.
'Shift started ten minutes ago.' Hondo entered the room. He didn't sound as pissed off as he usually would have been, and who could blame him. They had all been through a lot. 'What happened?' He questioned spotting the ice pack.
'Had a run in with Chris before work. One of my CI's text, I didn't think it would be her but there she was.'
'Let's see,' he gestured to the wound the ice pack was concealing. 'She got you good,' Hondo couldn't help but let a small smile grace his lips, proud she hadn't held anything back.
'It was a dead end. She'd never been there before and I couldn't locate a vehicle,' Tan summed up.
'Grab your things. Maybe we can find something with a little canvasing.'
Chris after she left Street with Benz.
Did part of her care that she had just betrayed him? Betrayed? How could she betrayed him they were on opposite sides. Chris was sat under a tree, empty bottle between her legs looking up to the leaves dancing above her head in the breeze.
How had she let him get to her? She hadn't, he meant nothing. She couldn't afford to be weak. It would do her no good to think about him. She knew better than to think her life could change now; too much had happened in the last few months. No matter who she used to be - and she had no clue who that was - she knew who she was now, and going out with a SWAT officer was not in the cards for her. No matter how he was kind, and caring, or the way he looked at her; or the way she felt when she looked at him. No; she didn't feel anything when she looked at him. She couldn't feel anything. She just couldn't.
His screams reached her ears and she took hold of the bottle bringing it to her lips. She sighed as she found it empty. She had only stollen it this morning and now wished she'd made the trip more worth while and brought back two bottles.
No matter how nice Street was being to her she couldn't trust him. She didn't trust anyone.
'Jamie,' Benz's shouted her from the house. At least if he saw her empty bottle he might get her a new one. She rose to her feet and made her way to the house. 'Jamie,' he called her again.
'I'm here,' she spoke moments before she walked through the door. Street looked terrible. Worse than Chris had imagined. His left eye was swollen shut, dried blood cracked in his hairline. The dark browning blood streaked down his neck onto the T-shirt on his broad shoulders. She regretted the hours she'd spent under the tree now. She shouldn't have let it go this far. She kept her indifferent mask on and simply looked down at him before changing her focus to Benz. She placed the empty bottle on the side, with a clang that reverberated around the quiet room. 'You all done?' she asked him. Placing herself in front of him her hands went to his hips. He lent into her and their lips met slowly.
'I am now,' he pulled their bodies together, oblivious to the other set of eyes on them. Chris was all too aware of the guy at their feet. He was behind her, but she felt his eyes burning into her back. Still she leant in and slipped her arms around his back. If there was one thing she knew; it was how to change Benz's attention.
Street after Chris left.
Street was just rolling with the punches at this point, and a lot of them were coming his way. Benz was not going easy on him. He tried to keep his mind focused on Chris; Jamie, he had to start calling her Jamie. It was the only way he would be able to get her out of here.
He wasn't even sure he could save Jamie, but he was pretty sure Chris was gone forever. Chris would never have just walked away and left him to the mercy of Benz. Street was curled up on the floor, he'd stopped moving and was relieved when Benz had finally stopped to take a breath.
He'd called her, Street listened for a response but none came.
'Are you ready?' she asked Benz. Street's body ached all over; but the pain failed in comparison to the pain in his heart as he watched Chris's lips lock with Benz's.
'I am now,' he spoke suggestively to her as he pulled back from the kiss. He pulled her body flush with his and her hands wrapped around him.
'Lets put the puppy back in his cage and take this up stairs,' the words made Street feel sick.
'You sort him. I'll go a wash up.' Blood never bothered her, yet she found the back of her knees wobble as she looked at the hands Benz's presented. They were smudged with Street's blood.
'Sure,' she watched him leave the room before moving.
Jamie didn't know where to start. She doubted whether Street could stand up, let alone make it to the cell with her. She heard the water start running down the hall.
'Are you ok?' Chris cringed. Why, just why? Of all the things to say.
'Super,' Street hissed at her, catching hold of his side to calm the pain.
'Sorry,' she knelt at his side. She had nothing to help him and very little time to move him. Benz would be waiting for her in a couple of minutes. 'I need your help,' she blurted out.
'huh,' Street grunted at her wondering what she was going to ask of him. He had a good mind to say no. Her hands went around him and pulled him into a sitting position.
'Fuck Chris, next time give me some warning,' Street was gasping unevenly his face paled under the bruises. He was surprised she had managed to get him up, but she placed herself underneath him and with the little help Street could offer she pushed them to their feet.
It took Street everything he had left not to collapse on top of her. They moved slowly though the hall and eventually made if back to the cell. She tried to lower him carefully but there was nothing she could do once he removed his arm from around her shoulder. She held onto him trying to right his balance but he fell backwards against the wall and slid down it taking Chris, who refused to let him fall, down with him.
She landed on top of him. He let out a yelp of pain as their bodies collided. Her arms were wrapped around him, and now were trapped between his back and the wall. She couldn't move. Street knew it and loved their new predicament.
'If you wanted a hug you could have just asked,' he grimaced as he smiled at her. 'This was a bit far don't you think,' he spoke and she lifted her head to look at him. Their faces were centimetres away from each others. Chris was looking at Street's lips. Street's heart skipped a beat. She dragged her eyes up from his lips and found his eyes watching her.
Chris was as fixated on Street's eyes as he was on hers. There was something between them. She was sure of it. The electricity coursing through her body was impossible to ignore. Was it possible she knew this guy? Did she remember him; her body did she decided.
