Chapter 11

Monica was awake early the next morning; she barely got any sleep the night before. All she could think about was whether or not there was another life growing in her stomach. She slowly climbed out of bed and started to find something to wear. She was checking to make sure she had everything for her classes that day when her stomach started acting up. She had just barely made it into her bathroom and to the toilet before spilling the contents of the very little food she had consumed the night before.

'This is not a good sign,' she thought to herself as she rinsed her mouth out at the sink.

"Mon?" there was a knock on her bedroom door. "Are you ok in there?"

"I'm fine, Ross!" she called as she started to get ready. "I'm just getting dressed. I'll be down there in awhile."

She finished getting dressed and fixed her hair before grabbing her bag and hurrying downstairs. She grabbed a bag of mini muffins and a bottle of iced tea before rushing towards the door where Ross was waiting for her.

"I waited for you in case they wanted to start in on you again this morning," he told her.

"Thanks," she smiled at him. "Sorry about last night."

"It's all right. I'm getting fed up with them always putting Chandler and his dads down too."

"So where are they?"

"There was a note on the kitchen counter," he told her as they walked outside. "Dad had to go into work early, and mom's going to be gone all day on errands. She's not sure if she'll be home after we get out of school or not. So we might have to get our own dinner."

"Chandler's house it is." Monica stated.

"I'm eating at Carol's tonight," he informed her as they got into their cars and pulled away from the house.

Chandler slowly came downstairs and saw Joey and Phoebe waiting for him as Terry cleaned up the kitchen. He grabbed an apple off the counter as Terry handed him a bottle of orange juice.

"You're up late," he looked at him.

"I didn't get much sleep last night," Chandler told him. "And I overslept this morning."

"Well you guys had better get going," Terry told them. "You're going to be late if you don't leave right now."

The three of them walked out to Chandler's car and they pulled out of the driveway. Joey and Phoebe were quiet until Chandler decided to start talking.

"Monica told me last night," Chandler started. "She also told me that the only one who doesn't know is Ross."

"Carol told us not to tell him," Phoebe told him.

"So is Monica pregnant?" Joey asked

"We're not sure," Chandler sighed. "We're going to make up a story so we can go home at lunch and talk to Terry."

"We'll help you pull it off," Phoebe told him as they pulled up to the school and started into the front entrance.

Chandler found Monica at her locker getting the books she needed for her morning classes. He came up behind her and she smiled at him.

"How are you doing this morning?" he asked her.

"I threw up this morning," she said softly. "It could be a sign of morning sickness."

"Or you could have a stomach bug."

"Maybe," she sighed.

"Joey and Phoebe said they'll help us with our cover story," he told her.

"All right," she nodded as the warning bell rang. "I guess we'd better get to class."

Chandler took her hand as they walked towards their class together. They walked in and saw Ross already in his seat and sat near him.

"Mon are you ok?" Ross asked her.

"Fine," she mumbled.

"I think she caught a bug, but she swears that she's fine." Chandler told him as he gave her a look.

"I knew I heard you getting sick this morning,"

"I'm fine," she brushed him off.

"I think you're allowed to check yourself out of school," Ross told her.

"I'm not eighteen yet. They would have to call mom and dad, and I would have to wait for one of them to come and pick me up. I'd rather have as little contact with them as possible. Besides I'm not even sick."

"Yes, you are."

"If you're still like this at lunch, I'm going to take you to the nurse myself." Chandler told her. "No excuses."

"I'll be better by then," Monica told them as the teacher came in and started the lesson for that day.

Monica smiled over at Chandler and he nodded, knowing that they had secured a plausible reason for her to get out of her afternoon classes.

Phoebe and Joey met Chandler in the hallway outside of the cafeteria, going over the final plans. They spotted Monica coming out of her Anatomy class, looking worse than she did when Chandler and Phoebe separated from her after their third period Spanish class.

"How are you doing?" Phoebe asked her.

"Not good," she mumbled as her face seemed to turn green. "I think I need to empty my stomach."

"I'll go with you," Phoebe rushed after her as she bolted to the bathroom down the hall and Joey looked at Chandler.

"Dude, if she is-" Joey saw all the kids still rushing to get to lunch and didn't want them all to overhear what they were talking about. "you know-what will you do?"

"I don't know," Chandler sighed. "On the one hand, I'd be freaked out about trying to provide for it."

"And the other hand?"

"I'd want to take responsibility," Chandler told him. "I wouldn't want them to be out there somewhere growing up with strangers and not knowing where they came from."

"Hey," Carol came up to them. "Ross sent me to see if Monica is all right. So is she?"

"She's in the bathroom with Phoebe. I think she's throwing up again."

"Not a good sign."

"I know," Chandler sighed as he saw Monica coming from the bathroom looking drained as Phoebe followed after her. "Are you ok?"

'"Let's go to the nurse," Monica mumbled.

"We'll tell Ross," Carol watched them depart and the three of them went into the cafeteria to find Ross.

"Well?" Ross saw them approaching his table. "How is she?"

"Chandler's taking her to the nurse's office," Phoebe told him. "He's going to ask permission to drop her off at our place since your parents aren't home."

"Good," Ross sighed as they all shared looks, glad that Ross didn't question their story.

Chandler sat beside Monica in the plastic chairs in the nurse's office as they listened to her trying to call Terry. Chandler took her hand and used his other hand to rub her back as she held her stomach and was bent over so her head was practically touching her knees.

"Are you ok?" he asked her.

"Not really," she mumbled.

"All right," the nurse came back to them. "I was able to get through to Terry. He's in the middle of something so he gave you permission to leave school and drop Ms. Gellar off at your place since her parents aren't at home to take care of her."

"Thank you," Chandler helped Monica up off the chair and they started out of the room. "I think we have to sign out first."

They briefly stopped by the office and Chandler signed them both out. They went out to the parking lot and Monica climbed into the passenger side of Chandler's car as he started it up.

"I'll try not to go fast," he told her as he pulled out of the parking lot.

They reached Chandler's house and they walked inside and found Terry working at the kitchen counter as there were papers strewn all around him.

"Hey, guys." Terry gathered all the papers as he spotted them. "How are you feeling, Monica?"

"Not great," she told him.

"I want you guys to sit down," Terry told them and they sat at the counter across from him. "I want to know what's really going on."

"What do you mean? She's sick." Chandler told him.

"I know for a fact that there is no stomach bug going around. The nurse confirmed that to me when she called." Terry saw them both exchange nervous glances. "You were nervous when you got back last night. You didn't oversleep this morning because I heard you moving around when I got up. So that means that you're avoiding me and your father."

"Why would I want to avoid you?" Chandler started getting nervous.

"Well I came up with a conclusion. We were on our vacation roughly a month ago where it was revealed just days ago that you two hit a big milestone in your relationship. Now Monica is sitting here looking nauseous and about ready to hurl. Now I want you to say it."

"Tell him Chandler-" Monica managed to get out before rushing from the room.

"Son-"

"We're not sure, but she might be pregnant." Chandler revealed. "The tests she took were inconclusive so we need an adult to take us up to the clinic so she can take a definitive test."

"Which is where I come in."

"Yeah?" Chandler said slowly.

"Because I'm more easygoing than your father?"

"Yes," Chandler sighed as Monica came back into the room. "Are you all right?"

"For now," she mumbled.

"Have you guys told anyone else?" Terry asked them.

"I told Phoebe and Carol when I took the first test," Monica told him.

"The only one who doesn't know is Ross." Chandler added.

"Ok, I will take you to the clinic," Terry told them. "We won't tell anyone else until there is something to tell."

"Thank you," Monica smiled at him.

"But I do need to call someone to meet us there," Terry found the phone and dialed a number.

"Who are you calling?" Chandler asked.

"You'll see," Terry held the receiver up to his ear. "Don't worry. They're very trustworthy. They won't tell anyone if we tell them not to."

Twenty minutes later, the three of them were sitting in the waiting room of the local clinic. Terry had called the school and excused Chandler from his afternoon classes as well. He told the nurse that the two of them had food poisoning from the night before. Chandler was sitting next to Terry, and a few seats away Monica was sitting next to Carol's mom. Terry had called her because he knew that Monica would need a female to talk to. They were all waiting for the nurse to call Monica back.

"How are you feeling?" Adalee looked at Monica. "Still nauseous?"

"A little," she sighed.

"Have you two talked about what you're going to do if this turns out the way you don't want it to?" Adalee glanced over at Chandler as he talked with Terry.

"No, we've just been too occupied with the results."

"I can understand that, but you two need to talk about this. Decide together what you want to do."

"I know,"

"How are you doing over there?" Terry looked over at Chandler. "What are you feeling right now?"

"Freaked," Chandler looked at him.

"I can imagine," they watched as the nurse opened the plastic separating window to call back the next patient.

"Monica Gellar, you can come on back now."

Chandler gave her a reassuring smile as she went into the back with Carol's mom.

"You two need to talk about what you want to do if this test turns out to be positive."

"I know," Chandler looked up as the door opened a little bit later and Monica and Adalee came back out.

Chandler got up and sat in the chair beside hers as Adalee moved to sit next to Terry. Chandler took her hand and she smiled at him.

"They'll have the results in about ten minutes," she told him.

"I know we've been focused on whether or not that you're pregnant." He started and she looked over at him. "But I think we need to discuss what we want to do if you are."

"No abortion." She stated.

"I wasn't even going to suggest that." He assured her.

"There's just so much going through my head right now." She said softly. "I'm just freaking out about everything."

"Like what?"

"The biggest thing is what will happen when my parents find out."

"I'm scared about that one," he agreed.

"Monica," the examining doctor came out to them. "You can come back in and we can go over your results."

The four of them stood up and followed him back into his office and sat before his desk as he open up a folder.
