Chapter 28

Everyone was trying to wait patiently for any word on Chandler. A few of them had taken to pacing around the waiting room, causing the nursing staff to be annoyed with all of them. Ross sighed as he sat next to Carol and her parents, who had shown up after Carol had called them and explained to them what had happened.

"Ughh," Ross sighed as his phone started to vibrate again. "It's them again."

"You should probably answer it," Adalee told him. "They won't stop until you do."

"Yeah?" Ross spoke into the phone as he answered it. "I already told you that I was going to Chandler's game tonight. Look, I can't talk. I'm at the hospital. Goodbye."

"You didn't even tell them why you were here," Carol told him. "They will most definitely show up now."

"Let them. Maybe they'll show some concern over their daughter and her husband,"

"I'll call Tom as a precaution," George took out his phone.

"You called him her husband," Carol looked at Ross.

"What?" he looked back at her.

"You referred to Chandler as your sister's husband. First time ever. Are you warming up to them?"

"Maybe a little," he sighed. "I am not happy about this whole situation, but it's their life. They have a right to live it how they want to."

"Well look who's growing up," Joey smirked.

"Monica's coming," Max told them and they all stood up as she reached the group.

"How is he?" Phoebe asked her before she could tell them anything.

"I don't know yet," Monica told them all. "The doctor took him down to get a CT scan. Charles and Terry went with him, but I can't be there because of the radiation that they use."

"How did he seem?" Max asked. "Was he talking?"

"Yes, but it was bits and pieces. He has been in and out since the ambulance."

"I guess we just wait then," Sherri sighed as she sat with James and Jenna, who were being eerily quiet as they sat on the uncomfortable chairs.

"Are they ok?" Monica asked.

"Seeing Chandler get hurt was a little scary for them," Max told her. "He's kind of their hero."

"Chandler's coach is here," Phoebe told them all. "Along with the rest of the soccer team."

"Oh hell no," Monica started towards them.

"Calm down," Max held her back. "Slow down those pregnancy hormones."

"How is Chandler?" Coach Nash approached the group.

"He's on his way down to get a CT scan," Monica told him as she glanced behind him at the team. "No offense, but why are they here?"

"Team morality," he told her. "They are all concerned, but I warned them that they would get kicked out."

"You were right," Monica marched over to the team. "All of you can leave. Except for you, Mitch and Randy. Thank you for sticking up for me in theatre class. And for stopping Joey from punching a few people."

"Bing's always had our backs," Mitch shrugged.

"Yeah, why wouldn't we have his, and by extension yours?" Randy asked.

"Thank you," Monica smiled at them. "The rest of you can leave."

"So we came out here for nothing?" one of the other players grumbled.

"Maybe you would be able to stay if you had shown Chandler a smidgin of respect," Carol told him.

"And not make very disgusting innuendos about what you think happens in our house between everyone who lives there,"

"And if Richardson over there would have respected him as a team captain since the beginning of the season," Joey added.

"Smoking him in the back with the ball as soon as the coach's back was turned during practice? Real mature, moron." Carol glared at him smirking behind everyone.

"I always believed Chandler," Coach Nash spoke up. "I just couldn't prove anything."

"Clear on out," Max told the rest of the team. "If you wanted to stay, you should have treated your teammate and his friends better."

George helped Max lead the team, minus Mitch and Randy back out of the hospital and came back to the group.

"Ross, Monica, your parents are here," Max told them.

"What?" Monica looked at her brother. "Did you-"

"They kept calling me during the game and when we got here," Ross told her. "I finally answered and told them where I was, but I didn't tell them why I was here."

"That explains why they are here. They would never show up for Chandler."

"Ross," Jack and Judy rushed towards them as another figure followed them.

"Nana?" Both Ross and Monica looked shocked.

"Monica," Althea went to them both and embraced them. "Ross, I thought you were hurt."

"I'm visiting a friend who is hurt," Ross told her. "If I had known the reason that mom and dad were blowing up my phone all night was because you were in town, I would have answered."

"Yes, I hear there are some changes," Althea smiled at Monica. "I hear congratulations are in order for my granddaughter."

"You're not upset?"

"I can see you're happy. Why would I want to ruin that?"

"I wish mom and dad felt the same way,"

"Yes, they have been telling me all sorts of things all night."

"I'm sure it's along the lines of Chandler and his dads poisoning me and Ross against them," Monica said.

"Pretty much," Althea nodded.

"When it's really their doing," Ross said.

"I will want to hear everything that's going on with the both of you," Althea assured them. "But first, why are you all at the hospital?"

"Yes, who got hurt?" Judy cut into the conversation.

"My husband," Monica stated as she glared at them before turning back to her grandmother. "Chandler got hurt during his game tonight."

"He's an athlete?" Althea smiled.

"Soccer," Monica told her. "He might be able to get a scholarship for college."

"Speaking of that," Max cut in as he looked back at Coach Nash. "Any word from any of the scouts?"

"They will be contacting Chandler and his dads about it soon," Coach Nash told him.

"What about the game?" Joey asked. "Who won?"

"We did," Randy told him. "We pulled it off at the last second."

"What about the one who hurt his knee on Chandler's head?" Carol asked. "I know Chandler has a hard head, so that must have hurt him."

"He'll be fine in a couple days," Mitch told them. "Just like Chandler, I hope."

"Me too," Monica sighed. "I wish Charles or Terry would come out already and give us an update."

Charles stood in the hall with Terry as Chandler was pushed into the room for his CT scan. They watched as the doctor prepared the machine and talked to Chandler as it looked as if he was starting to get worked up.

"I knew this would happen," Terry said.

"What?" Charles looked at him.

"You're thinking of the last time that we watched him get a CT scan right?"

"When he woke up from that coma," Charles nodded. "He fought everyone back then."

"Charles, Terry," Dr. Martin came out to them. "Can you both come in here and calm down Chandler?"

"Yes," they both walked in and to the bed, where Chandler was on the verge of a panic attack.

"Hey," Charles grabbed his son's hand and gripped it firmly in both of his. "It's all right. You're going to be fine."

"I don't like that thing," Chandler said softly. "I can't breathe, and-"

"It will be ok," Terry took his other hand. "We know you have trouble with claustrophobia. It won't take long."

"Take some deep breaths with us," Charles started to breathe in and out deeply.

"What?" Chandler looked at him strangely.

"Just do it," Terry said and Chandler reluctantly started breathing along with them.

A few moments later, Chandler had calmed down and wasn't shaking as much. Terry waved Dr. Martin over and he came back over to the bed.

"Are we ready, Chandler?" Dr. Martin asked him.

"Only if they stay," he looked at Charles and Terry.

"Absolutely," Dr. Martin smiled.

"We'll be right behind you," Charles said. "And you'll be back out in less than a minute."

Chandler nodded as Dr. Martin went back to the techs and the table moved inside the tube. They could see Chandler starting to get worked up again.

"We're right here kiddo," Charles told him and he relaxed again.

"Ok Chandler," Dr. Martin spoke. "We need you to stay as still as possible so that we can get a good picture ok?"

"Yeah," he said softly.

"There," Dr. Martin smiled as Chandler was moved out of the tube.

"That wasn't so bad was it?" Charles smiled at him and he nodded.

"So what now?" Terry looked at the doctor.

"We'll get him into a room for now and we should have the results back within a half an hour,"

"We have a group out in the waiting room waiting to hear news. Can they all be in his room with us?"

"Yes," Dr. Martin assured them. "If you have any problems with that nurse again, just come get me."

"What nurse?" Charles asked.

"There was a situation when we all got here," Terry told him. "The kind of public situation that usually happens."

"I'll need more details later,"

"I'll go get everyone while you stay with him,"

Everyone was starting to get restless sitting in the waiting room waiting for any word on Chandler. Coach Nash, Mitch, and Randy had to leave. Joey assured them that they would get an update on Chandler when they did.

Monica and Ross were still talking to their Nana as Jack and Judy were pushed to the back. Monica smiled as her Nana expressed great joy over her great grandchild.

"So when will you know the gender?" Althea asked her granddaughter.

"I'm not sure, but I think that Terry wants to plan a gender reveal along with a baby shower," Monica smiled at her.

"You be sure to invite me to both,"

"Absolutely," they all looked up as they heard Terry's voice. "Althea, long time."

"Terry," she got up and gave him a gentle hug.

"You guys know each other?" Ross asked.

"Your grandmother was a big help to us when we first got custody of Chandler,"

"Really?"

"We were two guys who knew nothing about raising a kid. She helped us out a lot with all kinds of things. Especially bringing us all those casseroles the first few weeks while we tried to get into the swing of things."

"You're the casserole lady," Carol said suddenly.

"What?" Ross looked at her.

"It's what Chandler refers to you as. He couldn't remember your name. He still talks about you though."

"That's right," Monica smiled. "He says that he wishes he could see the casserole lady again."

"Well he might get his wish." Althea smiled. "Can I come with my grandchildren to see the young man that has made my granddaughter so happy?"

"The doctor has given us permission to bring all of you back to Chandler's room. Though I am not sure that Chandler would want a couple of you there." Terry glanced at Jack and Judy.

"They can stay out here," Althea stated. "Let's go."

"Wait, how is Chandler?" Monica asked.

"The results of the CT scan should be back in about a half an hour. In the meantime, we need to keep him awake just in case. Which may be difficult because he is becoming lethargic. Charles is doing his best."

"Let's go," they all started down the hall, leaving Jack and Judy behind.

Monica was the first one into the room, behind Terry, and rushed to the bed. Chandler was blinking his eyes rapidly to stay awake as Charles was attempting to talk to him.

"Hey," Chandler smiled as he spotted them all filing into the room.

"Are you ok?" Monica asked him.

"My head still hurts," he said softly.

"Dr. Martin will bring you in some pain killers soon," Charles told him.

"Who is that?" Chandler noticed an older lady that he didn't recognize.

"This is not the best way to introduce you," Monica smiled as Althea came forward. "But this is my Nana. We were not aware that she was coming into town."

"Nice to meet you," Chandler smiled at her.

"Apparently you already met her,"

"I have?"

"She was the one we called the casserole lady when you first came home," Carol told him and he looked back at Monica.

"Seriously?" Chandler looked at everyone.

"I am Althea," she came forward. "It looks like your dads have done a great job raising you."

"Does she know?" Chandler looked at Monica.

"She knows everything," she told him. "And she's happy for us."

"Really?" Chandler eyed Althea.

"I assure you that I do not share the same opinions as my daughter and her husband in regards to how your dads live or how they raised you."

"Which we should warn you in case they decide to barge their way back here to track us down," Ross spoke up. "My parents are in the waiting room."

"Apparently they were calling Ross all night, but he was ignoring them." Monica told him. "He finally answered and said he was at the hospital, but didn't explain. So they rushed down here and that was when we found out that Nana was in town."

"Anyway," Phoebe interrupted. "Are you ok, other than a possible concussion?"

"A couple bruised ribs," he told them all. "So I'll have to rest for the weekend, no matter what."

"Come on," Sherry and Max ushered James and Jenna towards the bed and Chandler smiled at them.

"Hey guys," Chandler looked at his cousins. "I didn't realize you were in here. It's too quiet."

"Witnessing you get hurt kind of shook them up," Max told him.

"I'll be fine guys," Chandler told them.

"I see we have a full house here," Dr. Martin pushed his way through.

"Are his test results back yet?" Terry went to go stand next to the bed beside Charles.

"They're back," Dr. Martin opened up the folder in his hands. "Chandler has a low grade concussion."

"Which means?" Monica asked.

"Which means he should be cleared to return to normal activity by Monday."

"Thank goodness,"

"I would like to keep him overnight just for observation. One or both of you can stay with him because we do need him to stay awake all night as a precaution."

"We'll both stay," Terry said as he looked at Max. "Do you mind taking these guys home and staying with them?"

"Not at all,"

"But-" Monica started.

"You are all going to school tomorrow, no matter what."

"We'll try to get him home by the time you guys leave in the morning," Charles told them all.

"We could keep these guys out of school tomorrow too," Sherry looked at James and Jenna. "Since it would be a waste for me to drive all the way home just to come all the way back here tomorrow to pick you up."

"What do you say?" Max looked at Charles. "Can your niece and nephew spend the night?"

"Their usual room is open," Charles smiled at him. "And we have extra clothes for them. We have been meaning to send them out to you."

"And they'll love playing with all of the electronics that you buy Chandler,"

"All the vital things to me are in my bedroom," Chandler said. "Except the game system that is set up in the living room."

"I will watch them like hawks," Sherry assured him.

"I guess this is goodbye for now," Monica looked at Chandler. "I'll see you in the morning. Try to be civil."

"I'll be fine," he told her.

"I'll go back with them and bring back a change of clothes for Chandler for the morning," Max told them.

"I guess we should go back out to your parents," Althea looked at Ross and Monica.

"They won't ask how he is doing, if that's what you're thinking." Carol told her as she followed her parents out of the room. "Feel better Chandler!"

"Bye," he called as they all filed out of the room.
