Despite everything, he's become used to the perpetual darkness surrounding him. In fact, sometimes, he even enjoys it. Without it, he's come to rely on his other senses, making some moments with his Regina even more breathtaking. The sound of her breathless murmurs in his ear, the feel of her palm against his skin… each sensation has become precious to him.
However, in moments like these, he longs for the ability to see her more than anything. He can tell she's angry. It's in the sound her shoes make as she furiously paces the floor, her breath as she pants. He wants to fix whatever she thinks he did, he really does, but he has no idea what he did to fuel her anger.
"Regina, tell me what I did wrong," he coaxes. "All I want to do is fix it, I promise."
She sighed. "You can't. Trust me."
"How do you know?"
"Because it's impossible!" she burst out. "Not to mention selfish."
He couldn't help laughing. "I can't imagine that anything you would ever think is selfish. You're the most selfless person I know." After all, hadn't she proven that time and time again by agreeing to live this miserable life with him day in and day out?
"That's just it, I'm not," she lamented. Robin reached out and felt the frown on her face, the way her eyes were trained on the floor. "Every time I run errands, I see couples out enjoying the afternoon, whether that's taking a walk together or playing a sport. I want us to be one of those couples, Robin. Desperately."
His heart broke. He thought she was happy with him, despite the challenges that faced them. Learning that she wanted nothing more than to be one of the crowd made him want to fix things, no matter what the cost. "We can change that, if you like." He started toward where he knew the lightswitch hung on the wall.
"Robin, no!" Regina cried.
He knew she had lunged for him when her hand grabbed the back of his shirt, but it was too late. He had already reached out and flipped the switch, filling the room with a blazing light.
He turned to face a stunned Regina, her gorgeous mocha eyes filled with terror. "Robin, what did you do?"
Before he could answer, they were both swept away. He didn't know what would happen next, but no matter what, he knew he could get through anything with Regina by his side.
