~Puck~
Day Five:
The next day…
I was sitting next to Sabrina on the couch. Daphne, Red, and Pinocchio were all upstairs. It was raining, yet again, so the fact that Sabrina couldn't be in the sun didn't really matter. She told me her skin was feeling better, and that she thought the antihistamines were helping. I didn't know exactly what had happened but I was just glad she wasn't mad at me anymore, I needed to ask her something.
"Brina, do you still wanna go to dinner with me? Tonight, or something. There's this sushi place, I heard it was good." I had no idea what she'd say.
I hadn't brought it up since the night we had gotten here. I crossed my fingers under my leg.
She turned to look at me. "Really?"
"I mean if you want. I was just wondering if you'd even want to go anymore." I scratched my neck. "But, if you still want to we-"
"Yeah," She cut me off. "I'd love that."
I smiled, surprised she still wanted to.
"Wait, Puck," Sabrina said.
My heart dropped.
"Yeah?" I asked, hoping she hadn't changed her mind.
"What are we gonna do with Red, Pinocchio, and Daph?"
I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well, Pinocchio's two hundred-something years old, and Red's, like, eight hundred, so I'm sure they can watch Daphne."
Sabrina laughed. I loved when she laughed. Her eyes always did this thing where they got sparkly.
"Okay, I'll just tell Daph we got her some babysitters." She giggled.
"Babysitters?" I heard Daphne angrily call from upstairs. "Guys, I'm thirteen, I'm pretty sure I can take care of myself."
"We're just kidding!" Sabrina yelled.
"Okay!" Daphne replied. "Do you guys wanna play a game?"
I shared a look with Puck. I wondered what type of 'game' she was talking about.
"Yeah," Puck answered before I could ask.
The five of us sat in a misshapen circle, in the loft.
"Since it was my idea, the first round gets to be mine." Daphne said, sounding like a drill sergeant.
We all agreed that it would be fair to let her go first.
"Okay, two truths and a lie." Daphne clapped her hands together. "I never eat people's leftovers, I've been locked in a basement for two weeks, and…"
She looked around the circle.
"I've already had my first kiss."
"It's two truths and a lie, not two lies and a truth." Sabrina said.
Red, Pinnochio and I all nodded in agreement.
"I know." She said, rolling her eyes. "That's why I told two truths."
Red looked at her uncomfortably and began fiddling with her shirt pocket.
"Daph, you told me the other day you hadn't had your first kiss." She said quietly.
"Yes, I have." I watched as her face turned bright red.
I knew she hadn't. I had heard her and Red whispering about it.
"Pinocchio, say 'Daphne's had her first kiss' and see if your nose grows," I said, proud of the joke.
"I'm not a marionette anymore!" He fumed.
"Once a puppet always a pup-" But I quickly shut my mouth when I saw Sabrina glaring at me.
"Okay, let's just move on," Red suggested. "My turn."
We all turned to look at her.
"I hate bananas, I've never tried to kill anyone, and I'm still kinda scared of the dark."
"I know it!" Pinocchio shouted.
I had never heard him yell before, and cringed at his squeaky voice.
"The lie is that you've never tried to kill anyone." He smirked.
"You got it!"
I rolled my eyes. Red's pet 'kitty', also known as the Jabberwocky had ripped my wings off years ago, almost killing me.
"My turn," I smiled, moving on.
"I'm royalty, I have an army of apes, and I don't plan on marrying Sabri-" But that was as far as I got before she socked me in the arm.
"Not funny, stink-face." She said, turning away from me.
"Aw, a lover's quarrel!" Daphne swooned, before starting to pretend to kiss the air.
Red giggled and joined in.
"I'm leaving if you two don't stop it right now," Sabrina said, and I could tell she wasn't kidding.
"Me too." I agreed, even though I'd partially started it.
Sabrina turned back to the group. When I looked at her face, she was smiling. I loved her smile. Her cheeks were already pink, but her grin made them glow.
"Okay… I've led an army, I dye my hair blonde and-"
"The lie is that you dye your hair!" Daphne interrupted.
"You act like you hate me so much, but look who's asking for advice now." Pinocchio sneered.
"I never asked for advice, I just don't know what to wear tonight," I told him.
We were standing in our bedroom, an awkward distance apart. I pretended I didn't see the dirty look he was giving me.
"Whether you're asking for advice or not, why should I help you? All you are is mean to me. You constantly play pranks on me, belittle my feelings and embarrass me any chance you get."
He did have a point.
"Because," I said, hoping I would come up with something to convince him to help me.
"Because…" He said, forcing me to go on.
"Because I'll help you get with Red."
His expression changed for a split second but quickly returned to his usual grumpy look. He shifted his weight to his other foot and crossed his arms.
"And why would I want to 'get with' Red?"
"I see the way you look at her," I said, hoping he'd agree and help me.
He rolled his eyes, and it took everything in me not to poke him in the ribs. I stuck my hands in my pockets, for good measure.
"I don't know what you're talking about…" He said, looking away from me.
"We can go with that, Pin."
He looked at me, back at the ground, and then me again.
"Okay, okay, I'll help you pick out an outfit, but only if you tell me how to talk to her."
I pumped my fist in the air, earning yet another eye roll from Pinocchio. Even if he was stuck-up, mean and a party-pooper, I'd been in his shoes before, with Sabrina. All I had wanted to do was get her to like me back. But instead of flirting, I was just mean to her. But in the end, it had worked. Kinda.
"Show me the clothes you packed, and I'll see if I can throw something together for tonight," Pinocchio ordered.
For the first time, I listened. I unzipped the large black bag that Granny had bought for me the week before. I began laying everything on the ground.
"Okay," I said, once I was finished, and the floor was covered in an array of t-shirts and shorts. "That's everything."
"That's everything?" Pinocchio asked, his face white as paper.
"Yeah?" I shrugged, glancing back down at the pile.
"You didn't pack any nice clothes."
"I don't own any nice clothes."
"So what do you want me to do with this?"
I threw my head back and groaned.
"Pinocchio, I don't know. That's why I said I needed your help."
"Unless you have the fairy godmother wand, I don't know how to change your clothes." He said as if I should have figured that out.
"Well, obviously, if I had the fairy godmother wand, I wouldn't need you."
"You know that I'm doing volunteer work right now, right? I can easily quit." Pinocchio grumbled.
"And keep mumbling every time you talk to Red, stare at her while she eats, and watching her while she's sleeping?"
"I do not watch her while she's asleep!" He cried.
"I'm sure you don't," I muttered.
I knelt down and began to shove my clothes back into my suitcase. Once the floor was clear, I pulled out my phone. I scrolled through my contacts for a couple of minutes before I finally found the one I was looking for. 'Marshmallow' it read. I had forgotten what I had changed her name to.
Daphne
I sent the text and anxiously waited for her response.
Yes?
I jumped at the notification.
Did you bring any magic
I clicked send and hoped she wouldn't ask why I needed it. She immediately started typing, but soon after, the text bubble went away. I looked down, right as it reappeared.
Why
Idk
I'll tell u if u tell me why
I sighed. I loved Daphne, but she could be difficult.
Idk I just need the fairy godmother wand
Didn't bring it sorry
I groaned.
"Could you be any louder?" Pinocchio asked, clearly annoyed.
"Daphne doesn't have the fairy godmother wand, and I'm gonna have to go to dinner in a t-shirt," I complained.
"And who's fault is that?" Pinocchio asked, rolling his eyes.
I fought the urge to get up and slap the magazine he was reading on the floor out of his hands.
"Besides, Puck, Granny suggested you bring a nice outfit, and you refused. It's no one's fault but your own. You can't blame this on poor Daphne." Pinocchio went on.
"Shut up, puppet."
"Marionette." He sighed, flipping the page of his copy of HGTV. "If you wanted, we could go buy you a new outfit."
"I don't want to tell Sabrina that I didn't bring anything to wear," I explained. "She'll call me unprepared."
"But, you are unprepared."
At this point, I saw nothing to do but tell Daphne why I needed the wand.
I'm going out to dinner with Brina tonight and don't have an outfit to wear.
Is it a date
I groaned again. Pinocchio shot me a dirty look, which I ignored. I waited a minute before I responded, partly because I was annoyed with Daphne but partly because I didn't know what to say.
No it's just dinner
I sent the text and turned off my phone. It buzzed.
Well if it's a date I can arrange something, but if it's just dinner there's no need to got to any extra measures
Sabrina might hate me if I told Daphne, but I needed an outfit for tonight and I was willing to risk it.
Fine. It's a date
I knew it
Less than ten seconds later, there was a knock on my door.
"I'm here!" Daphne yelled from the other side.
Pinocchio sighed and stood up. He opened the door and Daphne burst in. I laughed as I watched him sulk down the hallway.
"Oh, I'm so excited!" She exclaimed, clapping her hands together.
I rolled my eyes but had to admit, I was excited too. She reached into the waistline of her shorts and pulled out a wand, with a star on the top.
"Daphne…" I groaned, throwing my head back.
"What? I can't let this fall into the wrong hands!"
"Yeah, God forbid someone gets put into a prom dress. And, I've known you since you were seven, you know good and well I'm not the 'wrong hands."
"Well, you can never be too sure." She shrugged.
"Whatever, just show me what you can do."
The girl twirled the wand three times before smacking my head as hard as she could.
"Ouch! Daphne!" I cried, rubbing the bump I was sure was forming.
"Sorry, it's been a minute since I used this thing, I'm a little rusty."
I ignored the apology and walked over to the full-length mirror. I was wearing a yellow collared shirt and bright blue pants.
"Daphne, I look like a frat boy at the circus."
"Sorry, hang on." She said, before smacking my head again.
This time, I had on an all-white suit and brown leather shoes. A panicked look crossed her face and she whacked me with the wand.
"Hey! I liked that one!" I protested.
"I don't trust you to wear white." She said, rolling her eyes.
"Good point." I agreed.
I looked back to the mirror. I was wearing khaki shorts and a light blue shirt.
"I like this one!" I smiled.
"Me too!" Daphne grinned.
"Thanks, Marshmallow," I pulled her into a hug. "I appreciate it."
"Anything to get you and Sabrina back together."
I blushed and looked down at the ground. I hoped she didn't see. I watched as she walked out of the room. I took off the outfit and laid it on the bed, careful not to wrinkle it.
I walked to the bathroom and turned the shower knobs to the hottest possible. I waited for a second before I stepped into the burning water. I let it wash over me for a few minutes before I searched for who's toiletries I could steal this time. Finally, I decided on Red's. Her shampoo was vanilla scented, but it smelled more like birthday cake. I squeezed the bottle into my hand. I followed with the matching conditioner. I turned off the water and grabbed a towel, before getting out. I checked the time on my phone. Six o'clock. I had made a reservation for seven. We were supposed to leave at six-forty-five. I set my phone down and layered an enormous glob of Daphne's minty blue toothpaste onto my toothbrush. After I brushed for at least five minutes, I spit into the sink. I watched the water wash it away.
"Puck! Hurry up! I have to pee!" Daphne shrieked from the hallway.
I could picture her wiggling around outside the door, doing a potty-dance.
"Almost done!" I called back, holding back laughter.
I grabbed my phone and made sure my towel was secure around my waist. I opened my door and Daphne stepped back. Her mouth was wide open.
"Woah, Puck," She whispered. "You look… hot."
I laughed and punched her arm. But she was right. I looked good. I just hoped Sabrina thought so too.
