Chapter 3
September 5
The day was Monday and the start of another wonderful week of senior year. As soon as Elizabeth got up and finished reading her morning devotional, she was alerted of a text that came through on her phone. Picking it up off the nightstand, she smiled seeing that it was from Jack.
"Happy birthday Beth! And good morning to you, beautiful. I just want to let you know you're the sweetest, most amazing girl & my biggest blessing. There's not a day that goes by where I don't thank God for bringing you into my life. I hope your day is wonderful & I wish you a million more birthdays & that we'll get to spend them all together forever. I'll be over in about 30 minutes & can't wait to see you & spend the whole day with you. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH BABY GIRL!"
Elizabeth couldn't help but tear up as her heart melted at Jack's text. "My sweet Jack. You're gonna make me cry. Thank you. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have you. I can't wait to see you & there's truly no one else I'd rather spend my birthday with than you. I love you more than you'll ever know, darling."
By the time breakfast was over, Jack arrived at the Thatcher's ready to pick up his girl for school.
On the short drive to BGA, they held hands while talking about after school plans, listening to music, and sharing occasional loving glances.
Once they arrived, they shared a sweet kiss then got out of the car and made their way inside for their first class.
A few hours later, the couple was eating lunch at the Mercantile Deli along with their friends Lee, Rosemary, Michael, Grace, and Lillian.
They had already been chatting for 15 minutes about how they spent their weekend. During a short break in the conversation, Rosie came up with a question for Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, are doing anything fun for your birthday today?"
"Well." Elizabeth briefly smiled at Jack. "I know this sweet guy is treating me to dinner at the Grilled Cheeserie. Other than that, I'm not sure what kind of surprises he has planned. I know we'll probably hang out for a few hours at his house before that, though."
Jack smiled back at Elizabeth. "Just you wait, babe. I've got all sorts of surprises coming your way. I wanna spoil my girl as much as I can."
"You're so sweet darling. I know whatever you have planned will be special."
Grace chimed in. "Ok, you two are seriously the cutest. Just hanging out and going to dinner sounds fun. The Grilled Cheeserie is such a great restaurant."
Lillian was in an agreement and made it known. "I totally agree with you, Grace." She turned her focus to Elizabeth. "Have you enjoyed your birthday so far, Liz?"
"I definitely have. Thank you. Even with it being a school day, I'm so grateful I've gotten to spend it with some of the greatest friends in the world." She gave Jack an Eskimo kiss. "And of course the best boyfriend I could ask for who I love so much."
He returned the sweet gesture. "I love you, darlin'."
Michael took advantage of the brief silence and shared what was on his mind. "I know Grace just mentioned this but you two truly make a wonderful couple. We're all so happy that you have each other." He looked at Lee. "Right, man?"
Lee nodded and responded. "Right. We all love you two so much."
With Michael, Grace, Lillian, and Rosie in agreement, Rosie looked at Jack and Elizabeth. "Lee is so right. We sure do love y'all."
Jack and Elizabeth smiled and responded in unison. "Thanks y'all. We love you too."
The group of friends continued talking for another couple of minutes before Abigail made her way over to their table. Knowing they were on their lunch break, she was relieved she was able to catch them so she could wish Elizabeth a happy birthday. "Hey y'all. How's it going? You having a good day?"
Lee smiled. "Hi, Abigail. We're doing well and having a great day. Thanks for asking. How's your day going?"
"Busy as usual but great. Thanks. I'm so glad to hear y'all are doing well." She turned to Elizabeth. "Did I hear it's your birthday today?"
She smiled and nodded. "Yes, ma'am. It is."
"That's wonderful! Happy 18th Birthday! I hope it's been amazing."
"Thank you, Abigail. It definitely has been amazing with this sweet boy." She gave Jack a loving look while gently placing a hand on his cheek before looking around the table at their friends with a grateful smile. "And my amazing friends and family by my side."
"I'm so happy to hear that, Elizabeth. Do you have any fun plans for after school?"
She briefly paused. "Well, Jack hasn't told me what he has planned but I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest of the day." She gazed briefly in his eyes lovingly. "He always makes me feel so special."
He returned a brief, loving gaze. "It's because you're so special to me, baby."
With collective awes from everyone including Abigail, she complimented the young couple. "My goodness. You two are seriously the sweetest couple I've seen in a long time. Never lose that love you have for each other. It's one that doesn't come along every day."
Elizabeth looked from Jack to Abigail and smiled. "Thank you, Abigail. You are so sweet." She looked back at Jack and took his hand. "We definitely won't. The love I have for this sweet boy gets stronger every day."
He gently rubbed her left hand fingers with his thumb that didn't go unnoticed by their friends. "I feel the same about you, Beth. My love for you will never end."
Abigail smiled at the sweet moment. "That's so wonderful to hear because y'all are made for each other." She paused briefly thinking of a question to ask the group. "So, how's everyone's classes going?"
Rosie quickly responded. "We don't have all the same classes together, but everything is going pretty well. Luckily nothing has been too complicated. Hopefully it'll stay that way. Thank you for asking."
"Of course. I'm so glad your classes are going well. You're all so smart, wonderful students and I know you'll do awesome the rest of the year."
Grace graciously responded. "Thank you again, Abigail. Your kind words mean a lot to all of us."
"You're welcome." Quickly realizing she needed to get back to work, she continued. "Well, I wish I could stay and chat longer but I probably should get back to work. Your lunch should be out very soon. And Elizabeth, since it's your birthday, yours is on the house."
Elizabeth smiled in surprise. "Abigail! You did not have to do that but thank you so much."
"It's our pleasure. I know we didn't, but Noah and I wanted to. We hope you know how loved you are."
"I certainly do. I'm so grateful. I hope you both have a wonderful the rest of the day."
"Thank you, Elizabeth. I hope you have a great afternoon too, all of you."
With another round of thanks the group, Abigail got back to her duties and the 6 friends went back to their own conversation with Jack starting it. "Is everyone ready for the homecoming game and dance?"
Lee was the first to respond. "I know I am. Probably more for the game than the dance but still. I'm ready for both. I don't want to get too confident, but I think we have a pretty good chance of beating our competition, McCallie High School from Chattanooga."
Michael echoed those sentiments. "I feel the same, man. Both will be awesome. We need to enjoy every moment we can of senior year."
Rosie smiled and nodded. "We sure do. I can't wait for both the game and dance." Being the curious one she was, she asked what was on her mind. "Speaking of the dance. Does everyone have dates yet?"
Elizabeth looked at Rosie. "It's not official yet." She smiled at Jack. "But hopefully this sweet boy right here will ask me sometime soon."
He looked at her somewhat surprised by the question but still lovingly. "Beth. What do you mean hopefully? Of course, I'm gonna ask you, baby. I love you and I just want the moment to be as special as possible when I do."
"I love you more, honey. I'm just teasing. I know you will and that it'll be special." She took a moment then continued. "How about everyone else?"
Michael was first. "I haven't asked yet, but I'd love to go to the dance with Kathryn. She's always been so sweet and such an amazing friend. Just don't say anything because I want to surprise her."
Grace chimed in next. "Our lips are sealed. And to answer your question, Liz. I'd love to go to the dance with Chuck but so far, he hasn't asked. I know Lillian wants to go with Gabe, but he hasn't asked her yet either."
Lillian was third to speak up. "That's right. Hopefully they both will ask us soon though."
Elizabeth sent some positive thoughts their way. "I have no doubt they will. They seem to really like y'all from what I can tell." She turned to Rosemary. "Rosie. I won't even ask you because I have no doubt you'll be going with Lee."
Lee looked at Rosemary and smiled. "That's right. You sure will Rosie. Don't worry. I'll ask you soon too."
"I'm not worried. I know you will. I can't wait to go to the dance with you, Lee Coulter."
"I can't wait either."
Remembering something she was going to say a few minutes ago, Rosemary spoke up. "I was just thinking, it'll be so awesome to see which one of us ladies will be crowned Homecoming queen during the game. Who do y'all think it'll be?"
Jack didn't hesitate in his response. "I may be biased but I think it'll be you, Beth. I mean you're beautiful, sweet, kind, genuine, filled with school spirit, and everything in between. What more could everyone ask for in their homecoming Queen?"
Rosemary smiled and reassured Jack. "Jack, it's alright to be biased. We all understand and wouldn't expect any other response." She looked at her best friend. "Elizabeth. You're a beautiful, sweet soul and BGA would be lucky to call you their 2011 Homecoming queen."
Elizabeth looked at Jack then Rosemary with tears in her eyes. "Awe, y'all are so sweet and gonna make me cry. Thank you for the kind words. It would be an honor but there's no way." She spoke directly to Rosemary, Grace, and Lillian. "Rosemary, I think it'll be you but you three are all beautiful and I will truly be happy for whoever wins because they deserve it." She briefly paused. "Grace, Lillian. Who do you think it'll be?"
Lillian was the one to speak for both herself and Grace. "Thank you, Liz. That means a lot. You're so sweet. And we think it'll be you too, Rosemary. You would make an amazing Homecoming queen."
Lee looked at Rosemary in agreement. "You definitely would. It's going to be you, Rosemary."
Rosemary smiled graciously at her friends. "Thank y'all so much! That means the world."
Michael was last to give his thoughts. "I totally agree that you would Rosemary. I hope there are no hard feelings because I think it'll be you, Elizabeth."
"Michael. Stop right there. There are no hard feelings whatsoever. We're all friends here and should always be supportive of each other."
Grace smiled. "Amen to that. In the long run, it doesn't matter who wins. What matters is our friendship."
Elizabeth smiled in agreement. "So true! And thank you, Michael. That's very kind of you."
The group of friends continued talking and enjoying each other's company through lunch until they realized it was time to head back to school for their last three classes.
Once school ended for the day, Jack and Elizabeth headed to their lockers, grabbed their needed belongings, and said goodbye to their friends before making their way out to the car.
After leaving BGA, they made a quick stop at Chick Fil A for an afternoon snack before heading to his house to spend a few hours together.
When they arrived, Elizabeth was greeted at the door by Charlotte with a hug. "Hey, Lizzie. Happy birthday! It's so good to see you. Have you had a good day?"
"Thank you, Mrs. Thornton. It's wonderful to see you too. I definitely have." She rested her left hand on Jack's chest and looked at him sweetly. "I'm so happy I'm getting to spend the day with this sweet boy of mine who always makes me feel special."
"I'm so happy to hear you've had a great day. And I'm not surprised at all. He loves you very much."
Jack held Elizabeth's hand resting on his chest and smiled. "I definitely do."
"I love you more, darling."
After talking to Charlotte for a few more minutes, Jack headed to his room and Elizabeth to the guest room so they could change into their swimsuits for a little afternoon swim in the pool.
Wearing a yellow striped bikini with a pair of shorts, Elizabeth walked out of the guest room and into Jack's room to see if he was ready. "You ready, sweetheart?"
"Yeah. I'm ready." Hearing Elizabeth speaking and knowing she was in the room, he was quickly struck by her beauty as he looked her up and down, approached her, and gently placed his hands on her hips. "Wow. You're absolutely gorgeous, baby girl. I love this."
She gently ran her hands across his chest. "Thank you. You're so sweet and handsome. I love those blue swim trunks. I can't wait for an afternoon swim with you."
"I can't wait either. It'll be so much fun."
They shared a sweet kiss on the lips, put sunblock on, grabbed a beach towel, then headed down the stairs and outside to the pool.
As they were sitting by the poolside, they held hands, shared loving glances, and enjoyed the sunshine.
Jack looked over at Elizabeth and asked what was on her mind seeing the smile on her face. "What are you thinking about, darlin'?"
She sweetly looked back at him. "Oh. I'm just thinking about how grateful I am for the amazing life I've been given. I mean...the sweetest boyfriend and the most wonderful family and friends. What more could I ask for? God has truly blessed me beyond measure."
"My beautiful Beth. You are the sweetest soul and I hope you never forget how loved you are."
"Oh Jack. I promise I won't forget. I love you so much."
"I love you more, baby girl." He lifted her left hand up to his lips and kissed it sweetly. "Beth. What is your favorite thing about me?"
"My sweet, Jack. This is such a tough question because I love everything about you. One thing that stands out is your kindness and how patient you always are. You've never rushed me into anything in our relationship and that means the world to me."
"And I never will. I love and respect you way too much to ever jeopardize losing you. One of the most important things I've learned from my parents when it comes to love is to not rush but enjoy the time we take."
"That is wonderful advice. I love your parents. They are amazing people."
"They love and think the world of you which makes me so happy because you're the most amazing girl."
Elizabeth gently rested her hand on his cheek. "You're the most amazing boy." She gave Jack a sweet but questioning look. "What's your favorite thing about me?"
Jack gently took her hand. "I love everything about you but one thing that really sticks out for me is how kind you are. You have the sweetest heart and I don't know how I got so lucky to have you."
"Jack. I'm so beyond blessed to have you, my darling." She continued holding his hand. "I have another question for you."
"Sure, babe. I'm an open book."
"What's one thing you would never change about me?"
"One thing I'd never change. Hmm." He paused in thought. "I'd have to say your compassion for serving others through community service. I'll never understand how some people that need help can be so cold but no matter what, the kindness and grace you show everyone never fails to amaze me. I couldn't be prouder to call you mine."
"That is so sweet. Thank you." She gave him a smile. "Would you like to know what my answer to that question is?" Jack smiled back and nodded waiting for her response. "Jack, I must admit that your bravery in wanting to become a firefighter does scare me and I do worry that there might possibly be a day when you won't come home." She started getting emotional at the thought. "But that is something I would never want to change about you. The fact you'd be willing to risk your life by running into a burning building to save others you don't even know is just." She briefly stopped with tears still in her eyes. "The most selfless thing and I'm so proud that you are mine." She looked in Jack's eyes. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get so serious with the..."
Feeling the need to be closer to her for comfort, he stood up from his chair, went to sit on the edge of hers with his feet resting on the ground, then gently held her face in his hands as she started sitting next to him in the same position. "Baby girl. You don't have to apologize." He gently wiped her tears away. "I know you're scared but guess what? I'm scared too. Yes, I've said I'm not afraid to face my fears but the reality is that I am sometimes. I know we're not married but whenever we do, I promise I will always do my best to be safe and come home to you. Alright?"
"I know you will, Jack." She rested her head on his shoulder and reached for his hand which he gladly took. "You'll be an amazing firefighter and I will always keep you in my heart and my prayers."
"Thank you, baby. The same goes for you." He placed a kiss on her forehead which didn't go unnoticed by Charlotte as she looked out the window smiling. "Beth, this is probably an obvious question but who would you consider as your best friend?"
"You're right. It is an obvious question but that's ok. I don't mind answering. I would have to say Rosie but YOU." She lifted her head, looked sweetly in his eyes, and gently ran her right hand over his bare chest. "Are also my best friend who I absolutely can't live without. What about you?"
He rested his hands on her hips. "Well, you're without a doubt my best friend in the whole world but other than that, I'd have to say Lee."
"I love that. Lee and Rosie are great people and we're very lucky to know them."
"Yes we are but enough about them." He kept one hand on her hip while resting the other on her thigh. "Let's just focus on you and me."
"Oh, Jack. You're so cute. What did you have in mind?""I was thinking a lot of this." He kissed her lips sweetly and passionately.
"Mhmm. Jack. I love you. Keep. Kissing. Me."
"I'd love to keep kissing you but first I wanna take a swim with my babe. How does that sound? I promise I'll make it up to you with many more kisses later."
"That sounds wonderful. I wanna take a swim with my honey."
A few seconds later, they were in the pool playing a game of pool volleyball. After winning one game each, it was time for the tiebreaker as Elizabeth's competitive spirit came out. "Jack. I hate to say it but you're going down, darling. I'm so winning this next game."
Jack chuckled at her bold statement. "Haha. Yea. We'll see about that, sweetheart. I love your enthusiasm though."
"We will definitely see."
The game only lasted ten minutes as Elizabeth was the first one to reach five points. "Oh yeah. I won! That's right. I beat you, honey."
Jack couldn't stop laughing and smiling at his girl's excitement. "You sure did. Great game, baby." He gave her a high five then thought of an idea. "I have an idea. How about a little jousting match with those pool rafts?"
"That's sounds like fun. Let's do it. I bet I can win that too."
"Really, Beth? We'll see who the winner is. You're so going down."
She chuckled and rolled her eyes. "Now, who's the competitive one?"
Again, the score was one to one and time for a tiebreaker. They went at it for five minutes before Jack became the victor as he threw his arms in the air cheering. "Yes. I am the champion! Woohoo!" Not hearing or seeing Elizabeth, he called out to her. "Beth. Where are you?"
Catching him by surprise, she came up from under the water a few seconds later to face him. "I'm right here, sweetheart." She smiled at her love. "You might have won that jousting match but that's ok with me. I won just because I get to be here with you."
Jack couldn't help but smile. "That's the best part. I feel the same. You know that competitiveness is just for fun right?"
"Yes. It is for me too." Feeling a little flirtatious, she continued by taking his hand. "So, that kissing we talked about earlier." She gently pulled him in the water with her so they faced each other then started stroking his wet hair. "I'm ready for more."
Jack wrapped one arm around her waist and stroked her wet hair with the other. "I am too." He picked her up, wrapped one arm around her waist, and continued running his fingers through her hair as he passionately kissed her and soft moans escaped their lips. "Mhmm. Beth. I love you so much, baby."
With her legs wrapped around his waist and her arms wrapped around his neck, she spoke breathlessly in between the kisses. "Ohh. Jack. I love you. Like crazy."
The passionate kisses went on for 20 minutes before they decided it was time to get out of the pool, shower, then do their homework together before heading to dinner.
Forty five minutes later, Jack was sitting on his bed waiting for his girl, who had been showering and getting ready in the guest room. When she walked in wearing a pair of distressed jeans and a long sleeved tie dye crop top with her hair curled and in a ponytail, he was yet again blown away by her beauty. "Wow. You look absolutely gorgeous, darlin'."
She approached Jack's bed and took one of his hands. "Thank you, babe. You're too sweet. You look pretty handsome in those khakis and that pink shirt. You ready to get started on our homework?"
He smiled lovingly at her. "Yes, I'm ready. Let's get started so we can have some snuggle time before dinner."
"Jack. You're so cute. I definitely would love the same thing."
Luckily, they didn't have much homework so they finished in about an hour and a half, giving them plenty of free time to snuggle before dinner.
Jack wrapped his left arm around her shoulder. "Well, that didn't take long. It felt like we had way more homework that that."
"Yes, it did. I thought we would never finish especially with all those tough AP Statistics problems and college applications."
"Same. Those were challenging but we got through them together, right?"
She took his right hand with her right. "We sure did. I'm so glad to have you by my side."
"I feel the same exact way. Senior year at BGA would not be the same without you." He briefly stopped coming up with a question. "You know. We were just working on college applications so I was thinking. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?"
"That's a great question, Jack. In the next 5 years, I see myself married to a very handsome firefighter, living in Hawaii, and being a successful event planner."
Knowing she was referring to him but playing along anyway, he spoke up. "Hmm. Ok. Could that very handsome firefighter that you're talking about be me?"
Elizabeth slightly chuckled, rolled her eyes, and gently swat Jack's arm. "Jack Thornton! Of course, it's you." She leaned in closer to give him an Eskimo kiss. "I love you and I can't imagine it being anyone else."
"I know it is. I was just teasing you, baby. I love you more and I can't imagine my life without you." He briefly paused. "I have no doubt you'll be a wonderful event planner. I support you 100%. And Hawaii? I didn't know you wanted to live there."
"Thank you for the kind words and support. It means the world. Yes, even if it's just temporary, I would love to live in there at some point. It's so beautiful there and if it's with you, I'm so in. What about you?"
"Well, the number one thing on my list is to find the girl of my dreams, follow my career goal, settle down with my girl, start a family, and live the best life possible."
"I love that, Jack." She then looked at him puzzled. "But wait. I thought I was the girl of your dreams."
He chuckled as he reassured her. "You are, Beth. You're the one. The only one." He started running his left hand through her hair. "We may only be in high school but I know in my heart that we're meant to be together for eternity."
"We sure are, my darling." She lovingly placed a kiss on his neck. "I totally agree. I wish I could marry you right now but I know it's too soon. It'll happen when it's God's will.
"That is so true. And when it's right for us too." He placed a kiss on her forehead. "You're so precious to me and I refuse to spend my life with anyone else."
"I feel the same way. You're my whole world and there's no other guy sweeter than you that I would want to go through life with." She briefly paused remembering something she wanted to get Jack's thoughts on. "Jack. I know this is random but it's something I've been meaning to ask you for a while."
Jack turned to Elizabeth giving her his full attention. "Sure, Beth. What's on your mind?"
"What would you think about me getting a rib tattoo this weekend and next month, getting a double nose piercing?
He smiled at his Elizabeth. "I would love to see you with a tattoo and nose rings. You'd look even more adorable. Do you have a design for the tattoo picked out?"
"Yes, I do. I saved it on my Pinterest page." She pulled the photo up of the design.
"Wow! I love that, Beth! Amazing! Have you told your parents?"
"No, I haven't and I don't think I will unless I have to because I know they won't approve and I'm worried about what they'll say. I've wanted a tattoo and nose piercings for so long but couldn't go through with it till now because of not being 18. I thought this year would be the perfect time."
"It certainly is." He gently rested his hand on her cheek. "No matter what your parents say, I want you to know that you have my full support and I'll be right there holding your hand when you get it."
"Thank you, sweetheart. Your support means the world.""Of course, baby. I'm always here for you. And guess what? I'm gonna get a tattoo as well next month when I turn 18.""That's amazing. Do you know the design you want?"
"Not yet but I'm sure I'll think of something soon. I want it to be faith based like yours though."
"I wouldn't expect it any other way. So proud of you, Jack.""I'm so proud of you too." He looked at her sweetly. "Beth, I have a few birthday gifts for you. Would like to open them now or later at dinner?""I'd love to open them now but honey, you didn't have to get me anything. Just having you in my life is the best gift I could ask for."
"I know I didn't but I wanted to get you a little something." He approached his bed again after retrieving her gifts and birthday card hidden in his closet. "Here you go, Beth. Open the card first."
Elizabeth gently took the envelope with the card from his hand, opened it, and looked at the design, amazed. "Did you make this card yourself? It's beautiful."
Jack smiled and nodded. "I did. Thank you. Hope the message sounds alright. I've never been that great at words."
"I'm sure it's perfect, darling." She read the words written inside.
"My sweet Beth, where do I even begin? How about at the beginning? Yes, that would be good. When we first met, we were only newborns and even though I couldn't comprehend much at that age, I knew I loved you and could sense that you were special. As we got older, I realized just how true that was, especially when reaching middle school. We have literally been best friends our entire lives and that is one thing that makes our relationship so special. There are so many words and so much more space I could fill talking about you but just know this. You're the absolute best thing that's ever happened to me and I thank God every single day for bringing you into my life. Happy 18th! I hope you have the most amazing birthday filled with blessings and I hope this next year is everything you wish for. I can't wait to spend it with you. I love you to the moon and back, baby girl.
Your sweetheart,
Jack"
By the time Elizabeth finished reading the card, she was in tears. "Jack Thornton! You're making me cry. Thank you so much for this beautiful card. I'll treasure it forever. And just so you know, I love you endlessly. That'll never change."
"You're welcome. I never want you to forget how special you are to me." He handed her first gift wrapped in a small package. "I sincerely apologize for my horrible gift wrapping skills. I'm still learning."
She chuckled at the gift wrapping. "It's completely alright, sweetheart. It's the thought that counts." Opening the small box to see a gold necklace with sapphires representing her birthstone, she smiled running her finger over the beads. "Jack, this is beautiful. I love it and will think of you every time I wear it. Can you help me put it on?"
"Of course I can. I'm so happy you love it."
Once the necklace was on, she opened the next gift which was an off-white Crosley record player. "Oh, my goodness! Honey, I've been wanting one of these forever. Thank you so much. I can't wait to start using it, especially when we're together. Do you mind setting it on your desk since it's a little heavy?"
"No, not at all. That will also give me a chance to grab the last gift I have for you." He picked it up off the back of his desk chair then approached her. "I didn't wrap this one, but I didn't think that would be a problem. This has always been my favorite sweatshirt but now, I'm giving it to you."
Blown away by how sweet her boyfriend was, she responded attempting to give it back. "Jack. This is so kind of you, but I can't take this from you. It's your favorite sweatshirt."
"Well, you're my favorite girl and I WANT you to have it. Whenever we're not together and you're possibly feeling lonely, you could put it on and imagine I'm right there with you holding you in my arms. Hope that doesn't sound corny."
Elizabeth couldn't help but smile. "Not at all. You're seriously the sweetest. I love this sweatshirt too and I'm so happy you would share it with me. Thank you again. You really have spoiled me today."
"Anytime. I just love spoiling you, Beth." Picking up his phone off the nightstand, he continued. "You know, I really wanna a picture with my girl to remember this special day. What do you say, darlin'?"
Elizabeth sat on his lap facing him and stroking his hair. "I'd love a picture with my sweet boy."
Once their lips met, Jack took the photo then tossed the phone on the bed as they got lost in each other's kisses for the next 10 minutes.
"Oh, Jack. I love you."
"I love you, baby. Mhmm. You know. I could kiss you all night, but we should probably head to dinner before it gets too late."
"I don't. Want to stop either. But you're right. We probably should head out." As soon as their lips parted, she asked her question. "Where are you taking me to dinner?"
"That is a surprise. You'll love it though."
Thirty minutes later, Jack pulled up right in front of the restaurant, put the car in park, then removed the blindfold from Elizabeth's eyes. "Alright. We're here."
Looking out the window, Elizabeth smiled ecstatically. "You're taking me to The Grilled Cheeserie?!"
"Yes, I am. I know it's your favorite restaurant, so I wanted to treat you to dinner here for your special day."
She leaned over to kiss his cheek. "You're amazing, sweetheart. Thank you."
"You're more amazing, babe. I know dinner will be great as always. And maybe we could even share a milkshake for dessert."
"I would love that, honey."
After a wonderful dinner of a White cheddar melt and unsweetened tea for both of them, they shared the restaurant's classic "Chocolate Chip" shake while talking about various topics, sharing loving gazes, and occasionally sharing kisses, not caring who was watching.
They were enjoying each other's company so much that they soon lost track of time until Jack looked at his phone seeing it was 9:15 PM. Realizing this, they both told Lee and Ty, who were on their shift, goodbye then made their way out to the car so Jack could take her back home.
When they arrived, he helped her carry her things inside, chatted with William and Grace for a few minutes, then walked back out to the front porch to have a few more moments alone with his girl before giving her a Goodnight kiss, making sure she was safely back inside, and heading home himself.
September 10
It was an early morning for Jack like it is every Saturday but today was a little bit different. He had taken off work so he could spend every moment he could with Elizabeth before the excitement of her surprise birthday party he helped plan with her parents began. With Jack dressed in grey athletic shorts and a black American flag T-shirt, he said goodbye to his parents and made his way out the door to pick up his girl for breakfast. Wearing dark purple leggings, a black sports bra, a white tank top tied at the waist, and white tennis shoes with her pink backpack on her back, Elizabeth was already waiting on the front porch when Jack pulled up in the driveway. After reaching the bottom of the steps, she walked towards him, lightly dropped her backpack on the ground, then jumped into his arms with her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck as she gave him the most loving passionate kiss which he returned happily with his arms around her waist.
"Wow! What a way to say good morning!" He pulled her in for another sweet kiss. "Hey, baby." He smiled lovingly at her. "So happy to see you."
She played with the hair at the back of his head. "So happy to see and spend the day with you, sweetheart."
Just now noticing what Elizabeth was wearing, he gently placed her feet back on the ground. "My sweet Beth. Let me look at you." He rested his hands on her hips as he looked her up and down with pure love. "I love this! You're absolutely adorable, baby girl."
"Thank you, Jack." She ran her hands over the fabric of his shirt where his chest was. "You're pretty cute yourself." She briefly paused. "Oh. And I brought a sweatshirt just in case it gets chilly in the restaurant."
He smiled at her gently rubbing her sides. "That's good. I don't want my girl to get cold. You ready to go?"
"Yes, I am ready. Where are we going to eat?"
"It's your birthday week so where'd you like to go?"
"Would Cracker Barrel be alright?"
"Yes, I love that place. You got it, darlin'."
20 minutes later, they arrived at the restaurant. Elizabeth put on her tie dye sweatshirt, and hand in hand, they walked inside.
After a wonderful breakfast, they left for Timberland Park where they planned to hike on the Big East Fork Reserve trail and would later have a picnic lunch by the pond. During their hike, they were in awe of the beautiful surroundings and majestic wildlife. Coming up on a small building slightly hidden between the trees, Elizabeth stopped and pointed to it asking a question. "Woah, Jack. Look. What do you think that is?"
"I can't really see what's inside but it looks like a cabin."
"That's what I was thinking too. I wonder if anyone lived there at some point."
"I'm almost certain of that. It couldn't be too many people though. It's so small."
"It definitely is but still really cool. Don't you just love exploring the great outdoors?"
"I totally agree. And yes, I do." He looked at her sweetly. "Especially when it's with you."
"I feel the same exact way." They started walking farther along the trail as she continued. "Honey, what are three things on your bucket list?"
"That's such a great question. There's a lot of things on my list but if I had to pick three it would be traveling to all 7 continents, volunteering at an animal shelter, and running a marathon. What about you, Beth?"
"That all sounds amazing. I would love to do those things too, especially if it's with you. For the three things on my list, it would have to be visiting all 50 states, spending a day helping at a children's hospital, and owning a successful event planning business with Rosemary & Haleigh."
"Those are all awesome things too. You're so talented and can do anything you set your mind to so I have no doubt you'll be an amazing event planner. About visiting all 50 states." He briefly paused. "If that's something you want to do, I'll definitely do everything I can to help make it happen."
"Babe. You are so sweet. Thank you for the sweet words and always making me feel so special."
"Of course, darling. I never want you to forget how special you are to me."
"I promise I won't forget, honey."
A little while later, they were still sitting down on a blanket together by the pond after finishing their picnic lunch. Jack gave her a loving look as he came up with another question. "Beth, in your mind, what would be the perfect romantic date?"
"Jack. You make every date special, but I'd have to say that a campout under the stars would be pretty romantic. What would it be for you?"
"I totally agree. That would be amazing. For me, the perfect romantic date would be horseback riding and a picnic."
"I love that, sweetheart. Horseback riding and picnics are always so much fun with you." They sat in silence for a minute then Elizabeth shared what was on her mind which she was interested to know what Jack's response would be. "What is one of your favorite childhood memories with one or both of your parents? What makes this memory so meaningful to you?"
"That's such a great question, Beth. If I could just pick one, it would be the father - son camping and fishing trip to Long Hunter State Park in Hermitage, TN for my 13th birthday with my dad. It was going to be just the two of us but he made it even more meaningful by letting Tom come along. We had such a great time and made so many memories I'll always remember. What about you?"
"I think I remember you telling me about it. That does sound like so much fun. I'm so glad you got to spend that time with your dad and Tom." She briefly paused. "For me, it would be the family vacation to Sunset Beach, NC when I was 11 years old with my mom, dad, Julie, Viola, Uncle Wynn, and Aunt Elizabeth. I've always loved science so with Aunt Elizabeth being a science teacher, one thing that made it such a meaningful trip was the day we spent at the Planetarium."
"That sounds amazing. I know you had a great time. I remember you telling me about that too. It's great you got to make such a wonderful memory with your family."
"Yes, family is always so important." She looked at Jack sweetly. "You know…I was just thinking, if and when we have our own family, how would you feel about bringing any future kids we may have here every now and then?"
"Babe, what do you mean, IF? You're my one and only and there's no other girl I'd want to have a family of my own with than you. That is a great idea and sometime down the line when we do have children, we should definitely bring them here."
About 10 minutes later, they had finished packing up their things and were preparing to leave when Jack spoke up. "You know what I was just thinking?"
"What's that, Jack?"
"I was just thinking." He rested one of his hands on her cheek. "How I really wanna get a picture with my beautiful girl to remember this special day."
"Oh, honey. I'd love to get a picture with you but who's gonna take it?"
Just as Elizabeth said that they looked up to see their friend Joey Barnes approaching them. After talking for a few minutes, Jack asked if she would take the photo of him and Elizabeth, which she gladly did before they said goodbye and went their separate ways.
For Jack and Elizabeth, it was a trip to Battleground Tattoo Parlor for her to get her first tattoo. Once they arrived and found a parking space, they sat in the car for a few minutes.
Jack looked at Elizabeth smiling. "You ready for this, darlin'?"
"Yea, I'm ready. Just a little nervous about the pain level and what my parents are gonna say."
He reached for her hand and intertwined her fingers with hers. "That's completely understandable. Don't worry though. It's gonna be ok, baby. I'll be right there beside you the whole time and will have your back no matter what."
Inside the tattoo parlor, they checked in then took a few steps to one of the rooms where it would be done.
After Elizabeth showed the designer, Ainsley what she wanted, she removed her bra but kept her shirt on, lifting it up slightly to be modest with her boyfriend in the room.
As Ainsley started working on the tattoo, Elizabeth was lying down with Jack sitting in a chair right next to her, holding her free hand.
Considering it was a rib tattoo, it was very painful, and Elizabeth had a hard time staying still at times.
1 hour in, she gritted her teeth yet again, briefly closed her eyes, squeezed Jack's hand, and groaned in pain. "Ohhh man. Mhmmm. That really burns. Ohhh."
Seeing Elizabeth slightly move, Ainsley briefly and understandably stopped working to not mess up the design while Jack tried his best to comfort his girl. "Sweetheart, I know it hurts and I'm sorry. You gotta be still though. It'll take longer if you're not. Just keep squeezing my hand as much and hard as you need to."
Trying to get her mind off the pain, Elizabeth continued holding his hand and taking deep breaths. "I know. And I'm sorry." She groaned in pain. "Ohhhh. Ouchhh. That really hurts. I can't do this, Jack."
Jack sweetly looked in her eyes, squeezed her hand, and gently wiped her tears away while giving her as much support as possible. "Yes, you can, Beth. You're doing great, baby. Just hang in there. She should be done soon."
25 minutes later, Ainsley finally finished the tattoo. "Ok, it's all done. We have a mirror right over there if you'd like to see it."
"I definitely would." Looking in the mirror, she continued. "It looks amazing. I love it!"
"I'm so glad. Is there anything else I can do for y'all today?"
"No, I think that's all. Thank you so much."
"Of course. I was happy to help. I think it looks great too if I'm being honest. Such a beautiful design."
With Elizabeth fully dressed again and the payment made, she and Jack said their goodbyes and let her know they would be back again in the future for more before heading back to the car.
Like usual, Jack opened Elizabeth's door, kissed her on the temple, then walked around to get in the car himself. "My sweet Beth." He gently grabbed her left hand and gazed in her eyes. "Do you even know how proud I am of you? A rib tattoo is one of the most painful and you handled it with so much grace."
"Thank you so much, sweetheart. I couldn't have gotten through it without you by my side supporting and comforting me."
"There's nowhere I would've rather been, baby. I'll always support you, no matter what." He briefly paused. "And may I just point out how adorable you look with that tattoo? I love it and I love you."
"Oh, Jack. I love you, honey. Thank you so much. And guess what?"
Jack gave her a friendly but questioning look. "What's that?"
Elizabeth quickly responded. "I already want another tattoo. It's definitely painful but I'm sure I'll be able to get through it especially if you're there with me."
"Wow, Beth! Really?! That would be amazing. Where and what kind of design are you thinking?"
"I'm not sure yet but when I figure it out, I'll let you know."
"Oh, Elizabeth. More tattoos would look so cute on you, baby. If that's something you want, I'll definitely support you 100%."
"Thank you, darling. I know you will. Haven't you been wanting to get a tattoo as well?"
"I have. I'm thinking of getting one for my 18th birthday."
"You should definitely do it, darling. I know you'd look even more handsome than you already are. And of course, I'll be there to support you."
"That means so much, baby. I don't doubt it. You've always been there for me."
Elizabeth leaned over to sweetly kiss his cheek. "And I always will. Love you so much."
"I love you more. What do you say, we go hang out at my house for a while before we have to leave for your..." Jack immediately stopped mid-sentence realizing he was about to spoil the surprise.
"Jack. What's going on? What would we have to leave your house for?"
"Um. I can't say but I promise you'll love it. Just trust me."
Still not sure what Jack was up to but deciding to let it go, she responded. "Alright. With you involved, I know I will. I trust you, honey."
"That's good, baby. You definitely will."
With that said, Jack started the car and headed for his house so they could hang out for a little while before Elizabeth's surprise belated birthday party.
An hour and a half later, they were still at his house and sitting on his bed snuggling and talking when Jack realized he had something on his mind. "Beth, my darlin'. What makes you the happiest about our relationship?"
"That's an easy one. I love how we keep God in the center, are always supportive of each other in the good and bad times, and how you always make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. What is it for you?"
He stroked her hair and looked deep in her eyes. "It's because you are the most beautiful girl in the world." He continued his loving gaze. "You and I are on the same page about the first two but another thing that makes me happiest about our relationship is how many ways you make me feel truly loved including your hugs, kisses, cuddling, and frequently sending sweet messages that always make my day."
"Awe, you mean the world to me, and I'll never stop showing how much I love you. In fact." She climbed onto Jack's lap to face him and started rubbing his sides slightly inside his shirt while gazing at him flirtatiously. "I think now would be a great time to do." She kept caressing his sides while kissing his neck. "Just that."
Moaning in pleasure, Jack responded while caressing her sides slightly under her shirt as well. "Mhmm. Baby. You read my mind. Let's make out."
With that, Jack lied down with his head on a pillow as Elizabeth continued to kiss his neck, stroke his hair, and straddle his hips while he pulled her closer to him, rubbing her sides. "Ooh. Jack. I just can't stop. Kissing. You. Mhmm." She gently nibbled his ears then sat up to gaze at him while running her hands up his abdomen to his chest over his shirt. "Wow, do I have one handsome boyfriend?" She smiled, nodded, and rubbed his chest. "Yes. Yes, I do."
He sweetly took her hands resting on his chest. "And I have the most beautiful girlfriend. Come closer, baby. I want those sweet lips on mine."
"I wanna keep kissing you." She leaned over and covered his mouth with hers, passionately kissing him.
Within a few seconds, Elizabeth was now lying down with her head on the pillow as Jack straddled her hips, running his fingers through her dark brown tresses, and still passionately and sweetly kissing her.
Wrapping her arms around him, she softly moaned letting him know how much she was enjoying it. "Mhmm." After 5 minutes, Jack's lips traveled down to her neck as she leaned her head back to give him more access while smiling at how much pleasure she was feeling. "Oooh. Yes. Jack. Don't stop, honey. I want more."
25 minutes later, they were still caught up in each other's love not being able to take their lips off each other. Jack was sitting up and leaning against the headboard while Elizabeth was sitting on his lap facing him.
Alternating between rubbing his chest over his shirt and stroking his hair, Elizabeth shared her feelings in between each passionate kiss. "Oh. Jack. I. Love. You. So. Much."
Caressing her sides over her shirt, echoed her sentiments in between each kiss. "I. Love. You. Even. More. Baby. Girl. Mhmm. I don't. Want to. Stop kissing. You. But we. Need to. Head. Out. Soon."
They shared a few more sweet, passionate kisses then Elizabeth responded. "I didn't want to stop kissing you, sweetheart but you're right." She gave him a kiss on the cheek. "I'm gonna go change clothes but I'll be back in ten."
"Sounds good." Seeing his girl walking out of the room, he quickly stopped her. "Hey. Thanks for the past 45 minutes. You're amazing."
"So are you." She puckered her lips blowing Jack a kiss. "Love you."
"I love you."
15 minutes later, Elizabeth came back in Jack's room wearing white skinny jeans and sandals with a pink and purple floral top and her hair half up half down. Jack decided on jeans and a light blue shirt sleeve button down with a pair of black tennis shoes.
Upon seeing his Elizabeth, he was once again in awe of her beauty as he approached her and gently took her hands in his. "Beth. I love this! You look absolutely gorgeous, baby."
"Thank you, sweetheart. You don't look so bad yourself. You're so handsome."
Jack gave her a smile. "Are you ready to go?"
"With you by my side, of course I'm ready. Let's go."
After getting in the car, Jack blindfolded Elizabeth then walked around to the driver's side so they could make the drive to Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant where her surprise birthday party would be held.
Once they arrived and found a parking spot, Jack helped Elizabeth out of the car, picked up her purse for her, then held on securely and protectively to her arm so she wouldn't fall on their way inside.
Elizabeth could hear noises around her but still couldn't see anything and it was driving her crazy. "Jack. Where are we? Can I please take this thing off now?"
"Of course, you can. And you'll find out in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…"
As Jack gently took the blindfold off, friends and family shouted in unison. "Surprise! Happy birthday, Elizabeth!"
Definitely caught by surprise but still so happy, Elizabeth responded. "Jack! Did you do all this?"
"Well, a lot of it, but your mom and dad were a big help in the planning. And everyone else came in as soon as they could to help decorate."
Almost in tears from gratefulness, she shook her head. "I don't know what to say other than thank you. Everything looks great. I love you all so much."
Rosemary chimed in. "We all love you, Elizabeth!"
Jack echoed what Rosemary said. "We sure do. You're amazing, Beth. I'm sorry I kept you in the dark. I just wanted it to be special."
She smiled. "It's alright. It certainly is. You're seriously the sweetest." She placed a kiss on his cheek which gained awes from their family and friends.
The next 2 and a half hours went by quickly as it was now around 9:30 and the restaurant was closing in 30 minutes. Dinner and cake had been eaten, gifts had been opened, and there was now only one thing left to do to top off this special celebration.
Jack stood up from his seat next to Elizabeth and spoke up. "May I have everyone's attention?" Everyone became silent as they smiled wondering what Jack was going to say. "As you all know, this beautiful girl right here has been mine for over a year now. I love her more than I ever thought possible, and we've already made so many great memories."
Elizabeth, looking up at Jack, smiled and mouthed her question. "Jack, what are you doing?"
Seeing everyone's slight questioning look, he reassured everyone. "Don't worry, y'all. This is not a marriage proposal. At least not yet." Everyone including Jack chuckled before he continued. "Ever since starting high school, I've dreamed of the moment." He and Elizabeth shared a smile. "Where I would ask the girl that has my heart, this very important question." He briefly paused as Charlotte handed him the box that had been hidden the whole night and waiting to be brought out. Opening the box in his hands, Jack said his girl's name, "Elizabeth Claire Thatcher." His homecoming proposal was written inside the lid and on a football. He didn't say a word as he decided to let her read it herself and waited for a response.
After reading the text, "I would cheer real loud if I scored a date to homecoming with you", she immediately stood up from her chair, wrapped her arms around him, and placed a sweet kiss on his lips. "Yes, Jack. There's no one else I'd rather go to homecoming with than you, my sweet boy." She placed a kiss on his cheek then whispered in his ear. "I love you so much, honey."
He smiled, leaned his head and nose against hers, then spoke where only she could hear. "I love you like crazy, baby."
Sharing another sweet but longer kiss on the lips, everyone cheered and awed in unison before Elizabeth's friend and cheer sister, Haleigh shared her two cents. "Ok now. We get it. Y'all are in love. Don't have to rub it in." She briefly paused after hearing everyone laugh, including the couple who now were leaning their heads together again. "Just kidding. We love y'all."
Elizabeth turned around to address Haleigh while holding on to Jack's hand. "We know you were, and we love y'all too."
Later that night, everyone was back at their respective homes including Elizabeth. She was in the process of getting ready for bed when her mother came in her room to say goodnight.
"Elizabeth, dear." Grace approached her second oldest daughter. "I was just coming in to say goodnight."
"Goodnight, mom. Thank you again for the surprise birthday party. It was a lot of fun."
"Of course. Your dad and I love you and we're so glad you had fun."
Grace gave Elizabeth a hug which caused her to slightly groan in pain from the tattoo she had just gotten earlier that day. "Ow."
Hearing Elizabeth's groan, Grace looked her in the eyes and asked what was wrong.
"Elizabeth. What's wrong? Why did you just groan? Is there something you're not telling me?"
Knowing that her parents most likely wouldn't like her decision to get a tattoo, Elizabeth hesitated.
Grace started getting worried and spoke up again. "Elizabeth? What is going on?"
Elizabeth, realizing she couldn't hide it any longer, took a moment to gather the courage she needed then responded. "I got a rib tattoo earlier and it still hurts a little bit."
Grace's worry quickly changed to anger. "YOU WHAT?"
"I got a rib tattoo today."
"Let me see it."
Elizabeth lifted up her shirt to show her mom.
"Elizabeth Claire Thatcher! How could you do that? You know how your dad and I feel about tattoos." She called out to her husband. "William! Can you come here for a moment?"
"Of course. What's wrong?"
William walked in the room and approached them as Grace pointed to their daughter's tattoo. "Look at the trash that our daughter got earlier today."
William frowned in disappointment at seeing their daughter's tattoo. "Elizabeth, your mother and I still love you, but we are so disappointed that you would decide to do that. Do you even understand that it's permanent?"
"Yes, sir. I do." She pulled her shirt back down. "I understand but I love it. I'm actually considering getting more. And I made sure it included a bible verse so how could it be bad?"
Grace shook her head in amazement. "I don't really think you understand, especially if you want more. You are such a beautiful girl already and having tattoos kinda destroys that."
"Mom! Are you actually saying that having a tattoo makes me ugly?"
"Well, you're not ugly but it certainly doesn't make you any more beautiful. We didn't raise you to disrespect your body like you just did. In 1 Corinthians, it states that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and that we are each part of the body of Christ so it also disrespects the Lord."
"Wow! I can't believe you'd say that mom! Just because I have one and plan on getting more, that doesn't make me a bad person. I still love and respect the Lord with all of my heart. Getting a tattoo doesn't change that. There are a lot of good Christian people that have tattoos."
William chimed in. "Elizabeth, we're not saying you're a bad person, but we do think tattoos are wrong."
Elizabeth started crying and, in her mind, wished that Jack was there to stand by her as she interrupted her father. "It surely seems like that's what you're saying."
William quickly denied Elizabeth's statement. "It's not true, dear. You are a very sweet girl. We just don't understand what's gotten into you."
Elizabeth started getting frustrated. "There is nothing wrong with me! I know you don't want to admit it but I'm growing up and there's nothing you can do to change that."
There was a short bout of silence before William spoke up again. "What does Jack think of this? He's a wonderful young man and I'd love to know his thoughts."
"Jack was actually there when I got it. He was so sweet and held my hand the whole time."
All William and Grace could think about was the possibility of Jack seeing Elizabeth with her shirt off as William asked his next question. "You mean, you got a rib tattoo and Jack saw you with your shirt off? I really thought he was different but now I'm starting to question his morals and maybe even yours. Was it his idea or yours? If he's gonna be like that you need to break up with him."
Not hearing a response right away, Grace stated her thoughts. "I agree, William. Elizabeth, you really need to break up with him if he's not going to keep up his Christian morals and make you get trashy tattoos."
Elizabeth quickly became angry. "WHAT IN THE WORLD? Of course not! It was no one's idea. I did have to lift up my shirt up so it wouldn't be in the way, but I didn't take it off. I'd never do that!" Her tears started falling harder. "And regarding Jack, I'M NOT BREAKING UP WITH HIM! I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! He didn't make me get the tattoo. I'm an adult and that was MY decision!"
William nodded. "Yes, you are but you're still living under my roof and your mother, and I just don't approve or support you getting something so horrendous. Why didn't Jack stop you? He should know better."
"BECAUSE HE DIDN'T WANT TO! He wanted to be supportive no matter what MY decision was. Dad, with all due respect, you and mom may not approve but can't you be supportive of me making my own decisions? The tattoo is really not that bad."
"YES, it is bad, Elizabeth. It's very tacky. I'm sorry but we just can't support you in this decision."
"It's not tacky! It's unbelievable how unsupportive you're being. Jack, on the other hand has been more supportive than anyone else which is why I'm going to spend the night at the Thornton's."
William's jaw dropped in amazement. "You're what?"
She started packing an overnight bag. "I'm going to spend the night at the Thornton's because I'll be supported even more there than I have been here."
"Or you're just going over there so you can jump in bed with your boyfriend."
Elizabeth was now more furious than ever as the tears fell harder than ever. "WOW! I'm so done! That's really low for you and mom to think that. You've literally known him since he was born so why are you suddenly saying those horrible things when he has ALWAYS been the same sweet and wonderful guy with strong Christian morals? And it's the same for me. I have very strong Christian morals too. I can't even believe what I'm hearing! We both believe it's important to save ourselves for marriage which is what we're going to do. We do love and respect each other so much but we'd never allow ourselves to do anything different." She shortly paused. "Can you and mom please just leave me alone for a few minutes? I really need to finish packing then get going before it's too late."
A look of disappointment came across Grace's face. "If that's what you really want then we will but it's already 10 o'clock. Do you really think it's alright to be going over there at this hour? What if they've gone to bed?"
"It'll be fine. Jack has always said I could knock on his door day or night, no matter the time and he'd always be there."
"Well, he has but what about Thomas and Charlotte? Don't you think it's a little rude to just barge in, in the middle of the night?"
"Barge in? Really?! It's not like it's 2 am or something. They've said I'm always welcome there so I'm sure they won't mind but I'm gonna call Jack. Please just let me finish getting things ready."
With a nod from Grace, she and William left their daughter alone to finish packing.
A few seconds later, Elizabeth picked up her phone, pulled up Jack's name on speed dial, and called as tears kept falling.
Sitting in his bed reading his nightly devotional, he heard his phone ringing and immediately answered seeing that it was Elizabeth. "Hey Beth!"
"Oh, Jack! It's so good to hear your voice."
Hearing Elizabeth crying on the other end, Jack started worrying. "Baby. What's wrong? Are you ok?"
"No, I'm not. I just got in a huge fight with my parents and just need a little break from them. Is it ok if I come over and spend the night?"
"Oh, Beth! I'm so sorry! It's completely alright with me. Just let me check with my mom." He called out to Charlotte while still on the phone with his girl. "Ma, can you please come here for a moment?"
Charlotte, who was just down the hall, heard Jack and walked in his room. "Sure." She approached Jack. "What's up, son? Are you talking to Lizzie?"
"Yes, ma'am." He briefly paused to address Elizabeth. "One second, sweetheart." He paused once more to talk to Charlotte again while putting the phone on mute momentarily. "Ma, can Elizabeth come over and spend the night? She just got in a huge fight with her parents and said she just needed a break from them. I just love her so much and really need to be there for her. She's so upset."
"Of course she can. Your dad and I don't have a problem with that. We trust you and know how much you love her." Knowing about Elizabeth's tattoo from Jack, she quietly asked her son a question that only he could hear and that she was pretty sure she knew the answer to. "Was the fight about her tattoo and the fact they didn't like it?"
Jack nodded and responded to his mother's question. "I'm pretty sure it is but I haven't asked her yet."
"Ok. Just let Lizzie know she's welcome to come over and that we'll have the guest room ready for her."
"I will. Thank you, ma."
Charlotte smiled and nodded. "No problem, son."
Once Charlotte left his room, Jack unmuted the phone then turned his attention back to his girl. "Ok, sweetheart. I'm back. Ma wanted me to tell you you're welcome to come over and that the guest room will be ready for you."
"Thank you so much, honey."
"No problem. You know you're always welcome here. So, is it about what I think it is?"
"Yes, but is it alright if I tell you more when I get there? I really just don't want to go into detail with my parents possibly listening."
"Of course, it's alright, baby. I understand. I'll be waiting with open arms when you get here."
"Oh, Jack. I love you so much. I'm gonna hang up so I can finish packing, but I'll be there in a little bit."
"I love you more. And alright. Just drive safe, baby. I'll see you soon."
"I will. See you soon."
15 minutes later, Elizabeth was downstairs heading towards the front door as Grace spoke up. "Elizabeth, dear. I really wish you wouldn't do this."
"Mom, I still love you and dad so much, but I have to do this. I'm so hurt by everything you said about me and Jack too, so I just need a break. I'm sorry to be such a disgrace to this family."
Grace was now hurt by her daughter's words. "Elizabeth Claire Thatcher. You're not a disgrace to this family but you don't think we're hurt by your actions? We really do love you but we're just disappointed in the decision you made."
"Disappointed? I feel like you're more angry than disappointed especially taking everything out on my sweet, wonderful boyfriend who has done nothing wrong! I really hope you'll think about the hurtful things you said and remember what kind of people Jack and I both were raised to be. I need to head out, but I'll see you in church tomorrow."
William then spoke as Elizabeth opened the front door. "We love you. Just don't do anything stupid or that you'll regret."
Elizabeth shook her head at her father's stubbornness. "Wow. That's not gonna happen. I'll be staying in the guest room. Goodnight. See you tomorrow."
Grace started tearing up from everything that just occurred. "Goodnight, Elizabeth, please be careful. We'll see you at church."
"I will."
With that said, Elizabeth slammed the front door behind her then headed to her car so she could make the short drive to Jack's house.
Upon arriving at Jack's house, she grabbed her needed belongings and made her way to the front door with tears in her eyes when she was immediately greeted by Charlotte. "Come on in, sweetie." Seeing the tears, she closed and locked the door then pulled her in for a hug to try and comfort her. "Oh, Lizzie. Jack told me what's going on. I'm so sorry! Everything's gonna be alright."
"I surely hope so. They were so mad."
"It will be. Just wait and see. They'll come around. I know your parents aren't happy but just know that Thomas and I are proud of you."
"Thank you for the support and allowing me to come over, Mrs. Thornton. I knew I could count on y'all."
"Of course, you can, sweet girl." She gently hugged Elizabeth a little tighter. "We love you and will always be here. You're welcome anytime."
Making his presence known in the foyer, Jack spoke as he approached them and placed a gentle hand on his girlfriend's back. "You definitely are, my sweet Beth."
Hearing Jack's voice, she stepped out of Charlotte's embrace and turned around stepping into her boyfriend's loving arms. "Oh, Jack. It's so good to see you."
Gently pulling her even closer in his strong, loving, and protective arms, Jack responded as Charlotte stood by watching the sweet moment. "I'm so happy to see you too, darlin'." Noticing Elizabeth's tears, he continued. "Would you like to talk?"
"Yes, I would."
Sweetly kissing her temple, Jack responded. "Alright, darlin'. Let me get your bags for you."
Handing Jack her bags, Elizabeth gave a loving smile of gratitude. "Thank you, honey. Always such the gentleman."
"Of course, and especially for you, Beth." He paused to briefly address Charlotte. "Mom, I'm gonna help her get settled then we're just gonna hang out in my room for a little bit."
"That's completely alright, son. I trust both of you. Just be there for your girl." She briefly paused. "Don't stay up too late though. We have church in the morning."
"Thank you, mom. We won't."
Fifteen minutes later, Elizabeth finished getting settled and made her way to Jack's room to spend time with her boyfriend.
When she walked in his room, she gave him a soft smile as she stood by his desk. "Hi."
He looked up from his phone then placed it on the nightstand as he smiled back. "Hi, Beth. You look beautiful."
"Thank you but I'm just wearing a t-shirt and yoga pants."
Jack nodded in disagreement. "That doesn't matter, baby. You could wear a paper bag and still be the most beautiful girl in the world."
"Awe, honey. You're seriously the sweetest, most handsome boy in the world."
"My sweet, Beth. It makes my heart melt to know you feel that way." Seeing the sad look on Elizabeth's face, he realized she was probably thinking about the fight with her parents, so he tapped the spot next to him on his bed encouraging her to join him. "Come here, baby. Let's talk."
"Ok." She approached his bed before being wrapped in his loving arms and showered with multiple kisses on the top of her head and her temple making her emotional yet thankful for the wonderful guy she had in her life.
With them sitting up in the bed, his right hand holding both of hers, and his left arm wrapped around her, he gently rubbed her left shoulder with his thumb. "You wanna tell me about it? Just take your time, babe. I'm not going anywhere."
"Thank you, sweetheart. I know you're not. And I do." She took a moment to get her thoughts. "This fight I had with my parents." She shook her head and started tearing up. "It wasn't like any other I've had with them before. It was really bad."
Wanting to be there for his girl, he tried to get more information on what happened so he could comfort her any way possible. "Can you tell me more? I wanna be here for you. How'd they find out?"
"I know you do. And I so appreciate it. I was getting ready for bed when my mom came in to say goodnight. As she gave me a hug, I gave an indication of being in pain, so she asked why, and I told her about the tattoo." She briefly paused. "Jack. You should've seen her face when I told her and when she saw it." She started tearing up even more. "And my dad's reaction was even worse. They were so mad especially when I said I love it and I'm gonna get more."
Still gently rubbing her shoulder with his left thumb and holding her hands with his right, he asked his next question. "What did they say, Beth?"
"Well, for one they said it was trashy, tacky, and disrespectful to the Lord and to my body. And they said that it destroys my beauty which basically makes me feel like they're calling me ugly. Maybe they're right. Maybe I am..."
Jack interrupted her mid-sentence as he gently turned her head to look in her eyes. "Don't you dare say or think that baby." He kept his loving gaze while gently running his right hand through her hair. "You are the most beautiful girl in the world and there's nothing that will change that. Not even tattoos. In fact, they make you even more gorgeous."
"Oh, Jack. You are so sweet. Thank you. I know it states in 1 Corinthians that our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and that we are each part of the body of Christ but how could it be bad if I included a Bible verse?" She started crying a little harder. "There's nothing wrong with me."
"Of course, there's not." He gently wiped her tears away then ran his right hand through her hair again. "Did they say there was?"
"Yes, they did. They said that they didn't know what has gotten into me." She started crying even harder. "And they told me it wasn't true, but they really made it seem like I don't love and respect the Lord anymore and that I'm a bad person just because I got a tattoo. They have been so unsupportive."
"Oh, Beth. I'm so sorry, baby. I have no doubt you love and respect the Lord with all your heart. I wish I could've been there for you. Just know that you're the most amazing girl and have done nothing wrong. I will always support you."
"Thank you so much, honey. Your love and support mean the world to me. I wish you could've been there too but at the same time it's good you weren't there."
"Of course. You're my world. And what do you mean, Beth?"
"Jack." She started getting emotional thinking about the awful things her parents said about her boyfriend. "They said some pretty hurtful things about you and me too that aren't true at all. It was so appalling."
Noticing how hesitant Elizabeth looked, he gently rubbed her fingers with his right hand thumb and compassionately responded. "It's ok, baby. You can tell me. I can handle it."
Elizabeth took a moment then responded. "Well, when I told them how you were there with me when I got it, all they could think about was you seeing me with my shirt off and why you didn't stop me from getting the tattoo. They seem to believe you made me take off my shirt just so you could see me without it. And you wanna know the worst part about this fight with my parents?" Her tears quickly started falling harder than ever. "When I told them I was coming over here to spend the night, they were not happy. My dad even went as far to say." She sniffled. "That I was coming over here to jump in bed with you." She sniffled again. "Honey, before that, they even told me I need to break up with you." She sniffled once more. "If you aren't gonna keep your Christian morals and if you're gonna make me, get trashy tattoos." Her hard tears were now mixed with anger. "Ughh. I'm so mad. I told them everything. I told them how I didn't take my shirt off, how it was my decision to get the tattoo and you just wanted to be supportive no matter what, that I wasn't coming over here to jump in bed with you, how much I love you, that I'm not breaking up with you, and that we BOTH still have our strong Christian morals. I did everything I could to stand up for us and they still didn't listen. They've literally known both of us since we were born so I don't know why or how they could say such horrible things." She briefly paused. "I love my parents but there is no excuse for them saying the things they did."
He gently placed his right hand on her cheek wiping her tears away and looked compassionately in her eyes. "Oh, baby. I'm so sorry you had to go through all that." He briefly paused. "I know you love your parents. I love them too. You're right though. What they said wasn't necessary and I can't deny feeling a little hurt by it. I've been nothing but honorable in my inten..."
It was now Elizabeth's turn to politely interrupt Jack as she looked him deep in his hazel eyes and rested her left hand on his right cheek. "Honey. Listen to me right now. You do not have to explain yourself and I'm so sorry for everything my parents said. You are the sweetest, most honorable guy with a heart of gold and I'm so very lucky to call you mine."
Jack was almost in tears from Elizabeth's words as he ran his right hand fingers through her hair. "My beautiful Beth. Thank you, so much sweet words, and standing up for us, baby. I'm so lucky to have you."
"Of course, sweetheart. I'm always gonna stand up for you and us."
"The same goes for me, Beth."
There was a short silence before Elizabeth spoke up again. "Jack. I really am so sorry for everything my parents said. You didn't deserve it at all. And I'm so sorry if I've been a burden with all my problems."
"My sweet Beth, please listen to me right now." Jack placed a gentle hand on her left cheek again while looking in her eyes compassionately. "You have nothing to apologize for and you will NEVER be a burden to me. You're my world and I'm always gonna be here for you."
"Thank you so much, sweetheart. You're the best and I honestly don't know what I'd do without you." Her tears started falling again. "I'm just so upset right now." Her hard tears continued as she shook her head then leaned it against Jack's. "I don't know if things with my parents will ever be ok again."Wanting to be there for his girl any way he could, he gently pulled her closer rubbing her left arm with his left hand and held both her hands with his right. "Oh, Beth. Come here." Leaning his head gently against hers, he started comforting her even more as her hard tears continued. "Shhh. Everything's gonna be ok. Just let it out. I'm right here, baby." He continued doing what he had been while also giving her multiple sweet kisses on the top of her head. "They'll come around. I promise." Still hearing Elizabeth crying, he kept his left arm wrapped around her and his right hand holding both of hers. "My sweet Beth. It's breaking my heart to see you like this. Is there anything I can do?""Jack. Can you just hold me and keep doing what you have been? It's bringing me so much comfort already.""Of course, I can, baby." He sweetly kissed the top of her head. "I love you so much and want to be here for you any way I can.""Thank you, honey." She sweetly looked at Jack then kissed him on the lips. "I love you so much more and I'm so grateful to have you."
For the next 20 minutes, Jack continued doing what he had been as they talked a little bit more about different topics then he softly and sweetly sang a few songs to her.
This brought her more comfort and eventually caused her to drift off to sleep.
Jack knew she planned to stay in the guest room, but she looked so peaceful, and he didn't want to disturb her, so he gently laid her head down on the pillow, pulled the covers up to help keep her warm then sweetly kissed her temple. "Goodnight and sweet dreams my sweet Beth. I love you so much and will see you in the morning."
With that, he went to tell his parents goodnight and let them know about the sleeping arrangements before heading to the guest room, saying his prayers, especially a special one for his girl, then calling it a night.
