The Fleet
The next morning Cyril decided to go on a nice long flight to catch himself some tasty fish. He had a nightmare about his father, he saw him come around the corner when he was younger and kill some of his friends who talked to him. He trembled at the thought of his father coming to the school that he had setup and slaughtering his pupils, as he wouldn't have approved of him teaching the smaller animals. He felt a cold chill run down his spine, most villagers knew his father was a cruel man. At least those who lived through it, Cyril stayed away from the villagers for the most part. Some of the villagers took pity on him and offered him pies, bread and soup.
He reluctantly accepted the food that they offered and said. 'Thank you.' When asked to attend a family dinner, he politely declined. Cyril for the most part still saw himself as a monster, because of his father's looming shadow. He could have tried to save his friends, but fear rooted him to the spot and he did nothing. He had been running away from his past for so long that he became cold and calculating. He kept his emotions locked away so that no one could ever hurt him again, though there were times when those emotions did break through, but he did his best to hide his pain away from his students. Still others like Murtock hated Cyril with a burning passion and could bring out the beast within.
Most of the villagers were indifferent to him, neither hating or loving the dragon. He built his school near a frozen lake utilizing some of the leftover material from the ape army along with some wood pieces from a long dilapidated former school, before the apes took over Munitions Forge. Most of the building had fallen apart, there were some intact books and a very rusty tailblade. He thought it very odd that a dragon's tailblade would be among the ruins. He took it with him as he assembled the new school. At first the villagers thought it was very odd that the dragon was assembling a school out by the frozen lake, rather than closer in the community. Most didn't even know about the old school, all they saw was a ruin with nothing of interest. For those few that still were alive felt it was kind of nice that the dragon was trying to assemble a new school out of the old pieces. Some of the villagers eventually began to pitch in to help Cyril assemble the new school and within four days time, the school was finally completed.
Most didn't really see the need for a school as most animals were just farmers, carpenters, miners and a few blacksmiths. His school started out with just ten students, but over time it grew to have eighty students as the villagers began to accept him more. His students learned some new technics that helped out their parents farms, mining, and even the blacksmiths grew in size to about triple what it once was.
He figured that the fresh air would do him good and set his mind at ease from his nightmare and from the insufferable Murtock and his crew. He preferred this moment of isolation that being around large crowds, as he took to the air on his large wings away from his cave home. He sailed quite a large distance out into the ocean, before coming to a stop as he spotted a large school of fish swimming not too far away from him. He changed to a fluttering pattern before diving into the frigid water. He caught eight fish in his mouth before emerging from the water and took the time to enjoy them, before going back for more.
The fish weren't going to fall for the same trick twice and as such they split into three separate schools leading to Cyril managing to just catch three of them. He swallowed the three he had before going back for another batch. He hit the next school, but only got three fish like before. He decided to change tactics as his previous approach was not working. He tried a side slash tail grab, but over compensated and he crashed into the water. After Cyril stopped rolling, he pulled his face above the water. A passing fish appeared near him and shot water into his face. Cyril shook his head a couple of times to clear the water off before swimming to a passing iceberg and pulling himself out of the water. Cyril knew that somewhere out there Aquina was probably laughing at him for being outwitted by a bunch of silly fish. It was not even the first time that happened.
"Okay Aquina you win. I admit that I am still a hatchling when it comes to catching fish." Cyril spoke out loud.
Except all he was greeted with was the sounds of a few passing whales. He decided to continue onto a new hunting ground a bit further out, as he felt it was unlikely he would meet up with her this trip. Still he would have loved to be in her company once again as it been a long while since he had seen her last. He saw another school of fish about 40 meters out from his current location and flew towards them. Once he got closer he dive bombed the fish and wound up with twelve tasty fish in his mouth. He took the time to enjoy his catch, before he swallowed them down. He chuckled a bit to himself about his latest catch as it was very rare that he caught that many fish in one swoop.
As he made his second dive at the second group of split off fish, he pulled up sharply as he had noticed a large group of ships out in the distance. He decided that he would investigate to see what they are. As he got closer to the fleet, he noticed to his horror that these were ape warships. More than that there were around 80 of them and they were headed his way. He knew that that he had to warn the villagers of the upcoming danger, but without an army for defense they would be easily slaughtered. Cyril estimated that the apes would arrive at Munitions Forge in a few days time.
He needed to delay the apes for as long as possible, so he could raise an army to fight them. Even then it felt like an unwinnable situation, there was simply too many of them. Cyril sighed knowing that there was no way he could defeat them all by himself, he would need help. If he had another Guardian, they might stand better odds, but he didn't have the time. Seeing no other option, he went in for the attack and launched a snowy blizzard against the ape warships. His attack seemed to be working as he managed to get three of the six ships to collide with each other causing some of the apes to fall overboard as well as some damage to the outer wood. Only one ship started to leak but it was a very small leak.
"Grr, someone blast that darn dragon out of the sky!" One of the ship captains shouted as he noticed the havoc the dragon had done to the other ships.
"We can't sir, he is too far up in the air." The crew replied.
"Then get a ship that can!" The ship captain shouted.
"Most of the ships can't do that sir, except our large frigates." The crew replied.
"Fine send out the Dreadwings to take care of that pest!" The ship captain replied.
"Ai, Ai, sir." The replied and signaled the Dreadwing squad to take off.
Cyril went onto attack the next set of ships with his blizzard move when he heard the screeching noise of the Dreadwings coming out to swarm him. He shuddered a bit as he was hit by one of their blasts but recovered his altitude. He knew that he had to keep moving to avoid being surrounded. He managed to blast four of them with his frozen breath, before being forced lower. Cyril knew that this was not going to be an easy fight.
(Author's notes: I decided to change up Cyril's chapters a bit, so somethings might be shifted to later parts of the story. I needed to rethink Cyril's character a bit, and as such the amount of ships needed to be increased from 30 in the original Bell Tower chapter to 80 ships. This is to make the battle feel a bit more desperate than in the original where he did nothing to stop the ships and just ran to ring the bell to signal the villagers that the apes are coming to retake Munitions Forge. I wanted Cyril to weigh the options that he had available. He could have gone back to the village to let the villagers know the apes are coming, get help or he can try to take them all on.
He knows he can't defeat them all on his own, but he doesn't have the time to run off to get help. All he can hope to do is delay the apes for as long as possible.
This chapter is a bit shorter than some of my other chapters as I don't have any more things to add to this chapter that has not already been added. One of Terradore's chapters might need to be revised because the Cyril part from earlier no longer lines up with this chapter. I feel this version of Cyril is a bit more fleshed out than the previous one, since he is trying to win the villagers support over time and building the school is part of that. The villagers are more familiar with Cyril's father which adds to the dynamic of Cyril's character.
One of the other considerations I need to eventually come back to is whether or not I still want to keep Volteer and Cyril parts as part of Terradore's Journey. Those areas are quite short dialogs and could easily be expanded into their own pages but at the same time I would then need to make Terradore's Journey text much longer if I want it to take the whole two pages of written paper and still match up with the later ship brawl chapter.
As to what I will write for the next Cyril chapter, it depends on how long the battle between the apes and Cyril lasts on paper. I don't know what the outcome of the battle will be. I am balancing several different ideas in my head on how it will play out and I have yet to decide which one will get written.
I do appreciate the feedback that I am getting on my story as it allows me to revise some of the earlier narratives to make the story more grand. I feel that I have improved quite a lot since I wrote the first chapter. I still need to work on timing in the stories themselves so that way each of the chapters timeline matches some of the previous chapters. For instance if it takes Terradore 2 weeks to make the trip to where Cyril is in his story, and the ape Army is arriving in 4 days and Terrador is there in Cyril's story. That is kind of a problem because the time is not flowing correctly.
I am really happy that you continue to follow my story as it continues to grow.)
