The Dreadwing Queen
As the team descended to the ground it became quite clear, that this group of flying creatures had no riders at all. As they landed on the ground, it became quite clear that these fifty creatures were indeed Dreadwings. The apes' Dreadwings looked at these newcomers with a bit of disgust towards them. As the largest of all the Dreadwings landed she had sent around her that she was not someone to be trifled with. At the flick of her wing her personal attendants saw to her grooming trying to do their best to see that she looked nice. She looked at the Dreadwing mounts and chuckled to herself as she recognized that they had lost most of the edge they once had.
"What sort of sorcery is this?!" The warrior shouted.
"Look at how that contemptuous female mock us!" The ape captain spoke.
"Quiet both of you, that female Dreadwing and her group have a lot more skill than you give them credit for. Do not be fooled." Scarsdale warned as he sensed the tension among his crew.
"My, my, my, the creature doth speak and with a such smooth tongue." The Queen cheekily replied. "Even the lowest ant can recognize someone of greatness. Now if you may, I like you to bow down before me."
"If it pleases you your majesty." Scarsdale replied and bowed down to the Dreadwing Queen.
"Someone certainly has good sense in manners." The Queen replied.
The other apes watched this exchange and one of the other apes looked kind of angry that their leader had to bow down to a worthless Dreadwing.
"She is making fun of you sir, I will gladly take my sword and slay the fowl beast." One of the apes spoke up.
"Be that as is it may, this situation may prove most useful." Scarsdale replied.
Scarsdale took a moment of silence to word his question to the Dreadwing Queen. If we have Dreadwings like this, the cheetahs and dragons wouldn't stand a chance. Scarsdale thought to himself.
"My great Dreadwing Queen, we are on a quest to bring back Cynder the black dragon to our master. We had her in our grasp, but she escaped during our battle with the cheetahs." Scarsdale spoke while looking into the Queen's orange eyes.
"Cynder you say? I have heard of her, she has been quite the nuisance to several Dreadwing colonies. My clan can retrieve her for you, though I do have problems of my own." The Dreadwing Queen replied and waved a paw to stop her attendants from bathing her.
Turning to them she said. "That is enough of a bath for me, I have some other errands to run."
"That would be most excellent my Queen. I do not know your name, but I'd like it so we can get to know you better. I would be happy to help solve your problems." Scarsdale smiled.
"Its Clarity the Dreadwing Queen. The little scamp is called Flick, he has been challenging Dreadwing tradition by befriending a mouse, and it has caused quite the stir. It is said that he fell to his death after some of the colony members pushed him off the cliff, but I don't believe that. Find him and return him to me!" Clarity growled.
"As you wish Queen Clarity, my men will be happy to help." Scarsdale smiled.
The men were quite fed up with how their leader was catering to this lesser being. They along with their Dreadwing mounts charged Queen Clarity and her group. Clarity rolled her eyes in annoyance as if the ones charging her were nothing more than rambunctious pups squabbling over a squirrel.
Clarity and her group pummeled the apes and the Dreadwing mounts in no time flat. After the battle was over, she sat her rump down on one of the apes and the others did so as well. The Dreadwing mounts were buried under three to four Dreadwings who looked pleasantly comfortable. The apes and mounts were wiggling under the mass of the Dreadwings.
"They might not be very bright, but they certainly make wonderful cushions. They are really comfortable, its not often that I get to school other Dreadwings, but for other creatures it is really nice." Clarity smiled as she let herself relax in comfort.
Scarsdale nearly laughed at the strange turn of events, but he decided to play it cool since he was the only one who hadn't charged them.
"I can see your quite the playful type." Scarsdale smirked.
"Ha, ha, ha, you haven't seen anything yet, though I do have my moments." Clarity laughed. "Though someone had to put those rambunctious newborns in their place."
"Feel free to take a few of them with you, though remember our deal." Scarsdale replied.
"Thanks, but no I have enough trouble with my own youngsters. I haven't forgotten our deal." Clarity smirked.
Clarity rested for a bit longer before she signaled her group to leave as she began to spread her wings.
"Come my loyal followers we have work to do." Queen Clarity spoke before launching herself into the air.
"Yes my Queen." Her Dreadwings replied as they took off into the air leaving the apes and mounts on the ground where they lay.
Meanwhile Cynder had finally came to a stop near some tall grasses and large trees, which surrounded the area. The light of the moon which looked like it was almost full, shed its glow on the black dragon. She took a look at the arrows that were embed in her and let out a sigh knowing that she would have to remove them. She had about 14 arrows in her. A lot of the arrows looked to be quite deep and once removed would begin to leak a lot of blood. Cynder turned her body around amidst the pain to look back and saw that she had left a trail of blood behind her.
Not good. Cynder thought to herself, knowing that it make her an easier target to find.
Cynder turned back around and began the task of removing the arrows. The first two came out rather easily, but the other arrows looked like they would take a lot more effort to remove.
"Ahhhhh. Oh great those didn't come out well." Cynder screamed as the pain ripped through her body.
The new openings were bleeding quite profusely and her ears tuned to the skies as she heard the dreaded call of a Dreadwing somewhere off. The four arrows she managed to get out were punishing enough and there was no more time to remove the rest. Holding a paw to her chest, she moved as quickly as she could, but traveling with only three limbs was quite hard. The sound of the Dreadwings drew even closer and it wasn't long before she was forced out into the open. Cynder saw a tree just a little ways from her if only she could reach it. As she got closer a squadron of 12 Dreadwings descended to the forest floor right in front of the area where the tree was.
Cynder growled trying to stand her ground, but the wounds weren't making that any easier.
"Well, well, well if it isn't Cynder the Black Dragon. I heard you are quite the nuisance in these parts." The Dreadwing leader laughed. "Why don't you come quietly. I have some friends who are dying to meet you."
"Never! I won't go back to the darkness. I will no longer be the Terror of the Night!" Cynder shouted as she clutched her chest knowing, that she was bleeding quite badly.
"My my my, seems like someone has grown a spine. No matter you will soon meet your doom." The Dreadwing leader chuckled. "Guards tear this welp apart!"
"What about the Queen?" asked one of the guards.
"Forget the Queen, she won't mind in the slightest that she is gone." The Dreadwing leader spoke.
Cynder turned her head curiously and wondered. Queen what Queen?
The Dreadwings came rushing in three at a time, claws slashing and biting at Cynder. These Dreadwings were unlike the ones the apes had and were way more difficult then anything she was used to.
Cynder managed to avoid some of the attacks, but just barely. During the battle a good chunk of her scales fell off. She took a glance at the scales now on the forest ground before returning an attack of her own. She performed several quick slashes with her tailblade and claws wishing she still had access to her shadow powers.
Some of the Dreadwings felt some of the pain from the claws and tailblade. The others however ganged up against her and came in using shout attacks and claws, adding three more to the pile and managed to shatter her tailblade causing it to fall to the ground rendering it completely useless.
Cynder knew she couldn't keep up this battle forever and with her main weapon broken she would need to make a run for it.
The Dreadwings managed to get several more cuts in before another group came in and the new wounds began to start pilling up. Blood began to be pouring out rapidly from the newly opened cuts as this new group was a bit more skilled and caused quite a lot of damage. Cynder could feel her vision beginning to fade, and knew that her body couldn't take much more of this. Cynder made a mad dash for freedom as she lowered her her horns to charge them, however things didn't go according to plan. The weaker Dreadwings jumped out of the way, but the more experienced ones had been expecting this and side stepped partially out of the way before using their wings and tails to upend her.
The Dreadwings sliced at Cynder's chest sending a new splattering of blood onto the forest floor. Flipped over onto her back and weakened from the loss of blood, her vision began to cloud over. The last words Cynder heard before she breathed her last were.
"So long Cynder the Black Dragon may you suffer in agony and be tormented by the slain." The Dreadwing leader laughed.
The Dreadwings then took their leave to report back to the Queen.
(Author's notes: This part of the story is a bit darker, but her death will play a very important role in the later chapters. I thought it be interesting to have a section of Dreadwings to be not be controlled by the apes but have kind of their own sort of agenda's. Clarity the Queen Dreadwing also has an important role to play, but it will be revealed later on. It feels good to finally have this chapter up after a long while.
Please feel free to let me know what you think of the story so far.
