Passing Time
Midoriya's fight with Bakugo was...interesting. Midoriya refused to use his Quirk, for obvious seasons, and instead relied on his knowledge of Bakugo's fighting style from watching him fight over and over as they grew up, and from his memorization of countless heroes' fights as he was growing up a fanboy. Lee was impressed. He had guts. He was doomed to fail, but he had guts. The initial fight didn't last long, though. Midoriya began to run from Bakugo, and Uraraka went after the nuke, Bakugo completely ignoring her.
"He's running away," a red-haired guy in the class said.
"It can't be helped," Lee said. "His Quirk is unbalanced."
"Unbalanced?" Mina asked.
"You're talking about the theory of multi-level Quirks, aren't you?" Momo asked.
"As astute as always," Lee smirked. "Yes, I am."
"The what?" Todoroki asked.
"It's a theory about the true nature of Quirks, one which forces a much deeper level of thinking than simply, 'What can I do with my Quirk?'" Lee explained. "It's asking, 'How is my Quirk possible without rewriting the laws of physics?' And it asks, 'How does my Quirk actually work?'"
"I don't follow," a blond guy with a lightning-type Quirk said.
"Let's take you for example," Lee said. "You can generate electricity, right?"
"Yeah," the guy nodded.
"Well, how do you actually do that?" Lee asked.
The guy opened his mouth before pausing. "I just kind of...do."
"And that's why people started to want to learn more about Quirks," Lee said. "They didn't understand their own fully. Electric types can work several ways. Drawing from the electrical charge of the atoms in the air around you, vibrating your cells to make a static charge, or using your body's own energy by converting it into electricity."
"What about me?" Toru asked.
"Either light bends around your body completely, allowing nothing to bounce off of you for anyone to see, or your body works like a sort of three dimensional camera, with the cells of your body adapting to pass light through you entirely and project the image of what's on the other side of your body onto this side," Lee said.
"And mine?" Momo asked, looking intrigued and slightly amused.
"You have the basic ability to rearrange atoms at will, but you also have the ability to change them," Lee said. "I assume your Quirk is powered by fat cells, which means you would have to alter not only the atomic structure, but also which types of atoms are being used. Plus, you have the ability to generate mass. If you didn't creating large objects would take away from your body mass, but it doesn't."
"And yours?" Momo asked.
"Mine's out of balance," Lee said. "Like Midoriya's. He has super strength, based on what I've seen, but at a price. His body destroys itself in the use. Most times, people who have super strength have to have a laundry list of supporting secondary powers. Alteration of mass to be able to use more strength than their muscle mass should physically be able to. Picking up, say, a stone pillar shouldn't be possible by the laws of physics because it would break under its own weight. And then, of course, they need durability, which is what his lacks. If you can punch with as much force as an explosion, that's all well and good, but if your body's durability isn't enhanced with it, your arm would be obliterated in the impact as well."
"Like what happens to Midoriya!" the blond guy realized.
"Exactly," Lee said, just as Bakugo fired a massive explosion out of his right gauntlet at Midoriya, Midoriya only barely able to dodge it, and still losing the half of his mask that remained from an attack by Bakugo earlier, along with his right sleeve and glove.
All Might forbade Bakugo from using that attack again, on the grounds that he was destroying the hideout he was supposed to be protecting. So, Bakugo attacked directly, beating the ever-loving shit out of Midoriya for a long while before Midoriya made his move. He moved to fight Bakugo back, but instead of attacking directly, he sent a super-strength-enhanced blast of compressed air up through the ceiling, using his free hand to block Bakugo's receiving horrible burns from it. The blast was exactly what Uraraka needed, however, because it broke a pillar free, which she made weightless and swung, sending debris flying around the room to distract Iida long enough for her to reach the nuke, officially winning the match for her and Midoriya, even though her Quirk left her too sick to move, and Midoriya was down for the count. After a few minutes, the three that weren't on their way to the school nurse reached the monitoring room and All Might declared that Iida was the MVP of the fight. When he asked if anyone knew why, Momo answered, explaining the reasoning perfectly and so completely that All Might had nothing to add, so he said Iida was too tense, just so he'd be able to say something.
"One should always start with the basics and devote themselves wholeheartedly to learning," Momo said matter-of-factly. "That's the only real way to become a top hero."
"There are other ways, but that is one of the faster ones," Lee said.
"Moving on!" All Might said.
The next fight was Todoroki's team against Toru's. The match was short. Todoroki started out by freezing the entire building, catching both Toru, who had taken off her shoes and gloves to disappear entirely, and her teammate, then calmly walked to the nuke, resting his hand on it before using his fire Quirk's heat to speed-thaw the building.
"Atta boy, Todoroki," Lee smirked. "Just as fast as I'd expect, after the entrance exam."
"He's incredible," Momo said.
"Yup," Lee nodded.
Next was the red-haired guy who apparently had a body-hardening Quirk against one that could dispense tape from his elbows against a student with a bird head who could manipulate shadows and his partner the frog girl. The frog girl and the bird-headed guy one. He was strong. After them, Momo and her pervert teammate were pitted against a girl with headphone jacks on cord-like tentacles in place of earlobes and the guy with electricity powers. They managed to win, but it was a close call. Then, there was a bulk-muscled guy in a yellow wrestler jumpsuit against a guy with a head that looked like it was made of rock against Lee and Mina.
"I'm so excited!" Mina grinned. "I can finally show what I can do!"
"Sorry," Lee said. "I'll just be running us to the bomb."
"Aw," Mina pouted. "Fine."
Lee smiled and picked her up bridal-style and she blushed but smiled. Then, he exploded into movement, carefully taking turns in the cramped hallway until they finally reached the nuke in the heart of the building. He set Mina down beside it after speeding around their opponents and he and Mina both leaned against the nuke. Their oponents groaned as All Might declared Mina and Lee the victors. They headed back to the others and began to watch the rest of the fights. After a couple more, they were all dismissed for the day, All Might taking off running ahead of them and disappearing after a couple seconds.
Lee watched as Mina fangirled over Midoriya, telling him his dodging was cool, over and over. He rolled his eyes and turned back to the front, pulling out his phone and texting Amy about the upgraded exoskeleton she was making.
"You look jealous," Toru said from beside him. "Are you upset that Mina's paying attention to someone else?" Her tone was teasing, as she and Mina had quickly figured out that he enjoyed their company but wouldn't admit to it, and was easily embarrassed if someone even hinted at him having romantic feelings for a girl in the class, whether he actually did or not.
"Of course not," Lee said, even as his cheeks heated up slightly. "I don't care if she fangirls over Midoriya. He earned it after standing up to Bakugo."
"Hm," Toru hummed. "That's true, but I still think you're jealous."
"No," Lee said just as Amy messaged back.
"Who's that?" Toru asked.
"My girlfriend, slash drug dealer, slash prostitute that I pimp for," Lee said casually, Toru laughing.
"Yeah, okay," Toru smirked.
"Prototype's coming along well," Amy's message said. "Ready in two years."
"And she said it couldn't be done," Lee smirked.
"What's up?" Toru asked.
"My sister's making an upgraded exoskeleton for me," Lee said.
"Cool!" Toru asked. "What do they do?"
"Nice try," Lee smirked.
Toru sighed. "I'll get you to spill someday."
She walked over to a group of her other friends and Lee turned the phone over and over in his hand. Finally, they were all dismissed and he stood, leaving and finding Mina waiting outside for him, given that as soon as he reached her she linked her arms around his.
"Want to go shopping?" she asked cheerily.
"What is it with you and shopping?" Lee asked.
"I'm a girl," she shrugged.
"You are?" Lee asked in mock surprise. "I swear, I had no idea."
Mina laughed, shoving him playfully before looking at him expectantly. "So?"
"Fine," Lee sighed.
"Awesome!" Mina cheered. "We're meeting Momo and Toru there!"
Lee groaned. This was his life now. Dragged from store to store by three girls who all wanted to buy every piece of clothing in existence. He sighed. There were worse fates.
