I don't own Home Alone
A/N: Hello CrimsonCommander688! Thank you for your review! I didn't even think about the technological changes that had happened during the year. Will definitely look more into it on future chapters. Thank you for your suggestion!
Enjoy!
Marv couldn't believe it. He was the first one awake on this early morning. Looking out at the windows, there wasn't a ray of sunshine in sight. Man did his back ache! He had been sleeping on the couch with the television on. He hoped that Amy hadn't minded the noise, especially since she had her head in his shoulder and was sleeping right next to him.
Wait a minute…Marv slowly adjusted to the person that was sleeping next to him and he almost jolted out of the couch! Had he and Amy been that tired that they couldn't get up from the couch? Well, he didn't mind having a pretty lady…No stop thinking that! Marv scolded himself. She was not just any pretty lady. He felt embarrassed as he slowly slid from the couch and away from Amy, hoping not to wake her up.
Mission accomplished. He stood over her and debated whether he should wake her up or not. She looked so peaceful that he didn't want to ruin whatever dream she had.
Why don't you head in the kitchen and make a cup of coffee for yourself? And for her! Marv thought. Yes, that sounded like a good plan rather than staring at her whilst she slept. He shut his eyes and shook his head upon even doing something like that. No need to be creepy towards someone that was taking care of him.
As he turned on his heel, his hand accidentally swiped over the lamp on the table. He was lucky enough to catch it, but it was loud enough to be heard throughout the apartment. He looked over to the woman and saw as she stretched onto the couch and fluttered her eyes open.
Amy's eyesight slowly adjusted, and she was surprised to see that she wasn't in her own bed. She looked forward and questioned why the television was on. Had she fallen asleep in here where Marv was supposed to be sleeping? Wait…oh no! Upon her realization, Amy placed a hand over her face. "Oh no…no, no, no," she muttered as she got up from her seat and turned to come face to face with Marv.
"Hi…morning," Marv awkwardly greeted her and moved his hands away from the lamp. "Sorry about the noise."
She was still sleepy but rubbed her eyes to get rid of the sleep. "I'm sorry Marv," she apologized, "I didn't think that I would fall asleep here. Where did you sleep?"
So, she didn't know! Marv could lie and tell her that he slept on the floor but there were no pillows or blankets for evidence. "Same place as you," he said, good-naturedly. Was that a blush that he saw on her cheeks? What an awkward situation! "But don't worry! I think we were both too tired to get up," he quickly added, hoping to ease some of the discomfort.
Amy didn't answer right away. She made a note to herself that it was better to just give him his own space. She didn't know whether to laugh or be mad at herself for being so reckless. She looked at Marv one last time, taking in what he had just told her. He may have been a thief but from what she had seen after he spent his time with her and Harry, he didn't seem the type of man who would take advantage of a woman. Otherwise, she wouldn't have bothered opening her apartment to him.
"If you want to know," Marv broke the silence between them, "nothing happened. Last thing I remember, we were watching that movie…the Wonderful Life one and I dozed off. I would never—"
"I know," Amy interrupted as she slowly got up from the couch. She couldn't believe that she had made him assume such a silly thing. Glancing over at the clock on the wall, she noticed that they were going to be just a little if they didn't hurry. Thank goodness that Tom didn't worry about punctuality, but Anne was a different story.
As usual, the diner was very busy until the late afternoon. Amy and Marv were sitting at a booth, trying to figure out a crossword on the back of the newspaper.
Marv was mostly intrigued by the comic strips, and he hoped that Amy would finish soon with that puzzle. "How long is this going to take?" Marv asked when he thought that a good twenty minutes had gone by.
"Not sure," Amy said, twirling her pencil in the air as if the answer was going to manifest at any moment, "it took me hours to completely fill out one, one time."
There was no way he was going to wait for an hour to read those comic strips. It wouldn't even take an hour to finish reading them!
"A story from this part of New York," Amy read the clue. "Sixth letter 'X' and tenth letter 'E.' Total of ten words."
"While you figure that out, can I at least take a look at the comics?" Marv asked here.
"Shh!" Amy shushed him as she tried to think of any word that would come to her mind. "Wait a minute…" she rolled her eyes and shook her head and wrote down the borough, "it's 'Bronx!' That makes sense! 'A Bronx…' now I need that last work to complete it."
"What's the last letter?" Marv asked.
"E."
"Fable?" he suggested.
"No, too long," Amy shook her head, "it's four words. A story from this part of New York…" she reiterated the clue.
Stories…what a word it was. The last time he had heard of this was when he and Harry were questioned by the police as to where they got their injuries from. When Marv had told the truth about how he'd sustained his injuries, the police laughed it off and said what a made-up story that was! Well, it wasn't fairytale that was for sure!
"Tale!" Marv exclaimed, causing Amy to jump in her place. "Four letters, last letter is 'E!'"
Amy quickly wrote down the word and nodded her head. "Well, that makes sense," she grinned and handed Marv the newspaper. "Knock yourself out. Seems like the kids from Family Circus are up to no good."
"Hopefully they don't have a house filled with traps," Marv muttered under his breath as he took the newspaper and read through the comics. All of them were Christmas themed, which he enjoyed, and it was a quick easy read. Nothing else in the paper interested him to continue reading. He folded up the newspaper and looked around the diner, seeing how empty it was. "Where is everyone?" he asked her. "It's like this place went from being lively to dead all of a sudden."
"Happens," Amy explained to him, "on days like this I just like to do a crossword, which I'm not done with."
"Don't tell me that's your…what day or we on? Fourth?" Marv asked her.
Amy slightly blushed and looked down at the unfinished newspaper. "How did you guess?" she asked him.
It wasn't that difficult to figure it out. "It's kinda boring don't you think?" Marv told her, "isn't the point of these days to do something fun? Something that excites you?"
"I've been doing this for a while now," Amy said as she motioned to the unfinished crossword. "I've had ones that I've completely filled out."
"Come on," Marv said, "let's not spend this time filling out crosswords. I have a better idea," he got up from the booth and motioned for her to follow him out the diner.
Amy turned around and looked at him by the door. "We're not supposed to leave the diner empty. Anne and Tom are not going to like this."
"So what?" Marv said, "it's only for a little while and it's dead in here anyway."
How long was a little while? Fifteen? Twenty minutes? Maybe they both had some time to spare. Just to be on the safe side, as she headed towards the door, she took another sign and placed it on the door that read, 'back in fifteen minutes.' She wondered where Marv was going to take her to celebrate this fourth day of Christmas.
"Ice skating?" Amy said as she looked at the rink that was filled with people sliding about and having a great time.
Marv had gone ahead and 'bought' a pair of ice skates for both. However, he had managed to do that, was a question for a different day. "Yeah!" he nodded his head at her. A memory came over him when he recalled the time that he had been skating at this area of New York and stealing other people's winter gear to keep warm. "Come on," he said.
Amy hesitated and stood her ground. "I've—I've never ice skated before," she said.
"Come try it out," Marv urged her as he headed over to the rink. Once he placed the blade on the ice, he staggered to maintain his balance, but he straightened up and was able to remain balanced. "It's easy!"
Amy looked as he slowly glided away, causing her to take a step back from entering the rink. "I don't know about this."
What was so terrible about ice skating? Everyone else was having fun! Was there something that she was afraid of? Marv didn't think much about her fears as he slid towards her and held his hands out. "Here," he said, "take a hold of my hands."
Amy looked down at his hands. Was he trying to make her go, even though she didn't want to? "Why are you doing this?" she asked him.
That was a question that he didn't expect. "Because…" he slowly drew out the word as he looked at Amy, "I think we should do something better than crosswords? Come on Amy, I got you."
He was being very instant about this, but knowing Marv's personality, she knew that he had no bad intentions. Also, it was the fourth day of Christmas, and he was just trying to help her out. "Alright," she said as she hesitantly, and gently, grabbed Marv's hands. She felt her body being pulled forward and onto the ice rink. She didn't dare look down but kept her eyes focused on Marv. Don't look down she thought to herself as she could feel the blades of her skates gliding across the ice.
"How do you feel?" Marv asked her.
"Scared," Amy simply answered him.
"What for?" he asked her, "are you afraid of falling or something?"
The thought of falling and breaking a bone wasn't that thrilling. However, bones would take their time to heal but it was something else that she didn't want to experience. "Something like that, yeah," Amy answered him. At that thought, she felt her knees weaking but tried her hardest to keep them straight.
Marv felt her hands almost slipped out of his and he held tightly onto them. "It's okay," he said to her, "I've fallen plenty of times when I ice skated here. It ain't that bad."
"I guess it's not," Amy said to him, "but I don't like the thought of it."
"Like I said, I've got you."
Well, that was reassuring but not enough for her to find that confidence to look at her feet and see what she was doing. As she kept her eyes situated on Marv, she had never noticed how blue those eyes looked, especially when contrasted with the color of the environment. She shook her head and broke away from any other tempting thoughts.
It was as if she had read his mind. She had made it clear that she wasn't a fan of ice skating, and yet she agreed to join him. He was glad that she had accepted his offer for it wouldn't be as fun skating on your own. In her eyes, he could see that there was not only fear but also a bit of sadness that lingered. He didn't know what it was specifically, but he wasn't going to force it out of her. As he held onto her hands, he slowly let them go until she was free from his grip.
"Look at that," Marv smiled, "you're skating on your own."
Amy didn't realize what he was doing until she felt her hands completely freed from him. He had let go of her and she still standing whilst slowly gliding across the ice rink. Wow, who thought that being on ice would be so…adventurous? A slight smile came upon her lips as she slowly looked down at her feet and noticed how still she was being. Maybe if she gave just a little bit of speed, then she could glide quickly. As she took a small step forward, that's when she felt her balance beginning to falter. She held her arms to support her fall, but it wasn't long until she felt an arm snake around her waist and hold her up.
"I got you," Marv said as he straightened her back to standing on the ice. "You okay?" he asked her.
Amy slowly nodded her head as she adjusted herself. Phew, that was a close one! "I think we should head back to the diner," Amy suggested. "I think those fifteen minutes are up."
Marv didn't want to head back. Being back on this ice rink, without having a robbery in mind, was more fun than what he had experienced before. However, he didn't want to get Amy nor himself into trouble for leaving the diner for so long. "I guess that's enough ice skating for the day," he said as he led her out of the rink and towards solid ground.
Amy let out a sigh of relief as she immediately took off the skates. It was good to be back on the ground where she wouldn't fear of slipping all the time.
"Sorry if this wasn't up to what you wanted to do," Marv said as he switched back to his shoes.
"No," Amy said with a slight smile upon her lips, "it was wonderful. I don't enjoy skating, but I enjoyed it with you."
He was speechless for a mere second. He couldn't believe that after such a long time he had made someone, especially a woman, enjoy herself…with him. Maybe he did have that charm still left in him. "Ahh it was nothin'," Marv simply answered her. "It was fun for me too."
Fourth day down...eight more to go.
