I don't own Home Alone
A/N: Hello CrimsonCommander688! Thank you for your reviews! That's wonderful, I hope you had a great birthday!
Enjoy!
The weekend was always the day of the week that Marv looked forward to. The fact that he was sleeping in on a Saturday, without the idea that he would be going to work, made him feel at ease. Catching up on some sleep was always necessary. The same couldn't be said for Amy. She had been used to waking up early that the moment the weekend came, her eyes were wide open in the early hours of the morning. She was in the kitchen making some breakfast and trying her hardest not to make any noise. However, she could see that Marv was knocked out cold on the couch as he soundly slept, though she wouldn't be surprised if the aroma of the food was strong enough to wake him up.
Once the coffee had finished brewing, she poured herself a cup and waited for the eggs to finish frying in the pan. She looked up when she heard a gentle groan coming from the couch. "Why is it that the smell of food has to wake me up?" Marv asked no one as he rubbed the sleep away from his eyes and looked over at Amy.
"It's almost eleven," Amy said as she pointed to the clock on the wall, "if you slept any longer, you'd be waking up during dinnertime." She took another mug and poured some coffee before handing it to him. "Hopefully this wakes you up. I've got the day planned out."
"Oh yeah?" Marv asked as he took the cupped the mug around his palms, allowing the heat to warm him up a little bit before he took a sip. "And what would that be?"
"I do need to do some grocery shopping before Christmas," Amy said, "it's crazy going shopping the day before. You can barely find anything."
A small smile came upon Marv's lips when she said that, throwing him back to a memory that he had been present in. "You're gonna make one of your Christmas dinners?" he asked her. The last time he had it, he remembered that it had been a very light dinner but one that he had enjoyed. Not only was the food great, but it was also the idea of being surrounded by people that made him happy. It had been a great dinner, before nine o'clock rolled around and all hell broke loose.
A light chuckle escaped Amy's lips. "I'm glad that I had someone to enjoy them." If she had more money, she wouldn't mind cooking up a feast every day. During that time, she had only cooked what she could afford that the food had come out great. She remembered how much Marv had enjoyed her cooking and she appreciated that.
"After shopping, what else have you planned?" Marv asked her.
"We'll see what the day brings out," Amy said. "There's always something interesting happening in New York."
To their luck, the grocery stores were not as busy, just like Amy had expected so it was easy to finish up all the grocery shopping. She had budgeted the amount of money that she was going to spend on the food, but it hadn't gone as she had planned. Marv had decided to indulge on some groceries that looked appetizing in his eyes. Since it was the holiday season, Amy knew that she would feel terrible if she was going to say 'no.' It wasn't like it was Christmas every day, even though she wished it would be, and after what Marv had been through and was trying to better himself, she thought that he deserved to be spoiled just a little bit.
"You'd better take it easy with those cookies," Amy said as he saw him devouring another one of the cream-filled center cookies, "wouldn't want to spoil your dinner."
He would stop eating them if they weren't so damn good. "Just one more," he said as he took another one. "And maybe just another one."
"And maybe that should be it," Amy said as she took the package out of his hands, "leave some for me! I like Oreos just as much as you do!"
It had been so long ever since Marv had an Oreo cookie. Eating those small cookies bought him so much nostalgia that he had forgotten how good they were. "Fine," he said as he held his hands up in surrender, "I can share." He then looked to his left as they passed by the local cinema and stopped. He looked at the movies that were currently showing.
Amy halted in her steps and then joined him. "See anything you like?" she asked him.
Marv's eyes traveled from one movie showing to the next and none seemed to peak his interest. He didn't even know who half of these celebrities were. Then again, how were they going to spend the remainder of a good Saturday afternoon? "Let's catch a movie after we leave the groceries at the apartment. It'll be my treat."
A small smile came upon Amy's lips when he offered that. She couldn't remember the last time she had been to the cinema. However, who was going to pay for the tickets? She had used some of her money to pay for the groceries and Marv had pitched in as well. "Oh," Amy said, "but Marv, I don't—" she didn't have a chance to answer him for he had already taken off down the street. Amy followed as quickly as she could after him and once they arrived at the apartment, she found him waiting for her. "I meant to say that I don't have enough money for two movie tickets."
And now regretted even buying three containers of Oreo cookies. "Don't worry about it," Marv said to her. "I have an idea how to get in there."
Amy cocked her head to the side. "How?" she asked him.
"I'll show you," Marv said to her, "but let's get these groceries in."
Curious to know what he was planning on doing, Amy decided that it was better to just be patient and see. She reached inside her purse and tried to feel for the set of house keys. "Oh…no," she said as she didn't feel the object anywhere inside her purse. "Don't tell me I left them in the apartment!" she peered inside her purse, hoping to see a golden glint but there was nothing in there.
Great Marv thought as he looked over at the door. He grabbed the doorknob, hoping that they had left it open, but it wouldn't budge. "Can you get the landlord?" Marv asked her.
"No," Amy shook her head, "I don't want to bother him again, considering that this isn't the first time this has happened. Can't believe I'm careless about this."
Well, there had to be a way to get inside the apartment! If only he had his crowbar with him then it wouldn't be an issue; other than having to pay the damages to the door. He looked over at Amy, who was looking through her bag once more, and noticed that she had two bobby pins in her hair. He perked up when he saw that. "Give me your bobby pins," he said and pointed to it.
"Why?" she asked with a puzzled look.
"I can get the door open with it," Marv said to her.
"You can?" she asked him.
"I'm a former bandit remember?" Marv said to her, "I know these of things."
Slightly perplexed by his demands, Amy pulled out the bobby pins from the side of her head and gave the bobby pin to him. He took the pin and bent it outwards, making the pin as straight as a line. He then inserted the end of the pin inside the keyhole. Amy peeked over to see what he was doing. She had never seen, nor heard, a door ever being picked open with a bobby pin and it was intriguing to see how Marv was doing it. It seemed that there was a lot of precision and patience involved in the process, something that she felt she wouldn't be able to do.
"Aha!" Marv exclaimed when he heard a click coming from the keyhole. He grabbed onto the doorknob and turned it as the door slowly opened and revealed the inside of the apartment. "Sorry. I had to use these guys," he said as he showed her the destroyed pieces of what used to be the bobby pins.
"At least they got us inside the apartment," Amy said as she walked in and began to place the groceries in their rightful places.
It wasn't long until they both finished with the groceries and headed out the door, only this time, Amy made sure that she had grabbed the set of keys. "So," Amy spoke up as they walked down the street, on their way to the cinema. "What is your plan on getting us those tickets? Or is it still a secret?"
"We're not going to buy any tickets," Marv said to her, "we're going to sneak inside."
"What?" Amy asked as she looked at him. "But we'll get in trouble!"
"Just because we want to see a free movie?" Marv asked her, "come on Amy! The prices that these places have for tickets are ridiculous. What if we won't enjoy the movie? What's the point in buying those tickets in the first place?"
While he did have a point, it just didn't seem right with her to waltz in there without paying for it. "It just doesn't seem right," she said to him, "I don't want this to be a reason for you to go to jail."
"I ain't going to jail for not paying a lousy movie ticket," Marv said to her, "let me do this for you. You've done so much for me and what have I done? Nothing."
"That's not true," Amy said to him, "you did buy me those flowers."
Stole is more like it Marv thought but went against in voicing his thoughts. And look at where he was. No one questioned where those flowers had gone, and he was fine. The only thing that worried him was about those tips, but he was going to find a way to give those back to Anne without arousing any suspicion. "And let me do this other thing for you," Marv said, "come on, it'll be fun. I promise you that no one is going to notice that we're there."
If there's one thing that Amy knew, people in this city minded their own business and no one bothered to question who was who and what they were doing. They wouldn't be the only people in all of New York to do something like this. Other people may have also done it and not get caught…right? "I will hold you to that," Amy said.
If that was her way of saying 'yes' that Marv would take it. "Okay, which one do you want to see?" he asked her.
Amy looked through the set of movies that were showing at the cinema. "How about this one?" she said as she pointed to the movie The End of the Affair. "I've heard good things about this film."
So, she's into romance Marv thought as he looked at the movie. Then again, he knew he shouldn't be too surprised considering how smitten she had been with Harry, who hated showing any form of affection in the eyes of others, which Marv couldn't understand why. "I have no idea what the movie is about or who the actors are, but let's give it a whirl."
When they walked inside the building, the first thing that Marv did was survey the place and the doors that surrounded them. To his left, there was the ticket line with many people waiting to buy their tickets. In the front, there was the ticket taker who looked through other people's tickets, and then the food court. Since they didn't have any business to the ticket line, the only obstacle that stood in their way was the ticket taker. He looked to be in his teens, and knowing that, Marv was going to use it to his advantage.
"Okay," he said as he looked at him, "see that kid over there? We're gonna try and make it past him, but only when there is a huge group of people. He'll be too busy to notice us."
"But what about them?" Amy asked as she motioned to the employees at the food court, "wouldn't they see us trying to sneak in?"
"Nah," Marv shook his head, "and if they did, I'll think of something."
Marv couldn't believe that he was taking this form of initiative. If Harry was here, he would probably be shooting down any idea that Marv voiced. Harry always held himself as the brains of the duo but seeing how that turned out, even in the events when Marv had voiced his concerns, perhaps that title needed to be reconsidered.
At this moment, the two of them waited until a large group of people headed to the ticket taker. Marv cautiously waited as he saw the ticket taker concentrating on the tickets from one theater attendee to the other and then seeing the employees at the food court taking the customers' orders. "Get ready…" he whispered over to Amy, "right…now!" he pushed her as she quickly walked behind the ticket taker and Marv followed her. Once he got through, he casually walked towards the woman and took her hand in his, making it seem like they had followed the theater's etiquette policy, and found the room where the movie was going to be shown. Once the two of them settled in their seats, Marv turned his attention over to Amy. "That wasn't so bad, was it?"
Bad? It had been thrilling! It was a silly thing to think about but getting past the ticket taker and considering the consequences that came along with it, made her want to risk it again. No, no she said to herself, don't even think about doing that! "The first time and the last."
"What?" Marv whispered to her, "you don't want to do it again?"
"No!" Amy whispered back to him in return, a little loudly than she intended to.
"Shh!" one of the theater attendees shushed her and then turned their attention to the movie.
He was only teasing her on that part, but a part of him could feel that she had enjoyed doing something that was out of her norm. Otherwise, why hadn't she hesitated in getting past the ticket taker? However, now that they managed to get through it was time to see what this movie was about. As the movie unfolded before them, it was difficult for Marv to keep up which character was which and what was going on between them. The only thing he understood was that there was an affair happening between the two main characters, hence the name of the movie. "Are you following any of this?" he asked as he leaned towards Amy.
Amy didn't answer him. She was deep into the movie, following every detail that was shown. How ever she was keeping up with these characters, Marv didn't know. With the movie continuing to unfold, a bomb exploded within the building and the noise was so loud that it threw Marv against his chair. He felt something grasp his hand and noticed that it was Amy's hand on top of his. The noise had been far too loud that it had scared her as well. Slowly, her grip began to soften as she slowly moved her hand away from his, though her eyes continued to be glued to the screen.
By the end of the movie, Marv was glad that it was finally over. It had its interesting moments, but nothing that captivated him to conclude that it was an out of this world film. He looked over at Amy who was wiping away a couple of tears that had escaped from her eyes. "What's the matter?" he asked her.
She sniffled as she wiped away the last of her tears. "It was a beautiful film. Very sad but beautiful. They loved each other, but they also knew that they couldn't have it and when they thought they could…well, you saw what happened."
It was all a huge and confusing mess. He may have not enjoyed the film but at least she had, and he didn't even have to worry about losing his money to a movie that he didn't like. "I just didn't think that it would have an ending where it would make you sad."
"Oh," Amy waved a hand in the air, "it's only a movie. Shows how well the actors played their roles. No matter how much we want a happy ending, there are moments that don't allow us to have it. Some of us are just not lucky with them."
What about second chances? Did luck have anything to do with that? Was he lucky enough to have been given a second chance? Yes…and he needed to take full advantage of that. He got up from the seat and looked at Amy. "Come on, let's head out the exit door in the front."
Amy stood on her feet and followed him down the exit. She hurried as she walked beside him. "Considering what we did to get in here, I enjoyed the movie. Thank you for a great afternoon," she said as she reached towards him and gently hugged him.
"Anytime Amy," Marv said as he pulled her closer to him, lingering his arm on her shoulders a little too long even after she had let go.
