Introduction.
It All Begins with You
If there was anything I could vaguely remember before coming to, it was the feeling of drifting restlessly.
It wasn't the type of drifting where you simply doze off because you weren't paying attention. It was as if I was weightlessly floating inside of a void, having no particular goal as to where I want to go. I wasn't even certain whether I had any will of myself before I felt a firm grasp and tug grabbing me away from where I originally stayed.
Opening my eyes was a foreign feeling, but I felt as if it was an action that used to be familiar to me. When I managed to pry open my eyes and allow my sight to settle, a large white figure towered over me, sitting calmly with its legs crossed before me. It took form of what I could only describe as a big, white, humanoid flashlight. For reference, you can compare yours truly to the size of what seemed to be the Empire State Building from New York. Except, you know… glowing.
"As much as I detest this method, perhaps this is the only way to fix the balance." A wistful yet monotonous voice echoed around me.
For a moment, I was still and confused. I didn't understand what was happening around me or who spoke, especially since the voice seemed to echo and come from all directions. What added more confusion to the situation was that regardless of how much I tried to peer upwards and catch a glimpse of what I assumed was my current conversation partner, I couldn't catch a face. Just a formless mold similar to what a human face would look like, except that it seemed to have no features at all. Blank like a plain white mannequin.
A low hum reverberated around the space we resided in. It was only then when I tried to look at my own body, noticing that I too was in the same glowing bright state as the giant whoever was in front of me. I raised my two arms in front of me, flexing my fingers and bringing them closer to me so I could inspect it. Even though I know my mind willed my limbs to move and they actually did, the actual feeling of my limbs was absent from my grasp.
"Alright, I'll bite." I muttered. "What the fuck is going on?"
For some reason, I imagined whatever was in front of me to be smirking at my snarky tone.
"For a soul to have died and retain some semblance of self is rare." It said vaguely. "Perhaps this could work."
"That's the second time you've said 'perhaps', but I only need to hear an explanation once." I said as I crossed my arms over my chest. "What the hell is going on here?"
A few moments of silence passed before the figure shuffled in front of me. It slowly lowered both of its arms until they were a few spaces in front of me. Slowly, it unfolded its hands and opened its bare palms in front of me. Sitting on one of the palms was a glowing red orb and on the other a black orb.
"Welcome, soul, to the realm of universes." It spoke. "I've brought you here from your untimely passage to peace for a rather tedious task."
I stayed quiet, hoping that whatever was talking would keep the explanation short and clear enough to understand by saying it once.
"Do you understand what balance is, soul?" it asked.
"Duh." I answered dully.
Ignoring my blatant disinterest in its question, it continued to speak. "Balance is the state of equality. As humankind would describe it, the equality of what is perceived to be good and what is perceived to be evil. The state of utter calmness where none is too less, too much."
It paused from speaking and I felt myself float a bit further from the figure. It was only then when I managed to give myself a view of the space surrounding us. Despite it being well-lit enough to make sure that the figure in front of me was visible, it was only when I looked around did I realize I was surrounded by rivers of stars and constellations. Planets, smaller rock forms, and other galaxies rotated and floated around, giving the space an otherworldly feeling to it. "I am what you may refer as god or the ultimate being. I am what has, what is, and what will be. I watch over the universe and its parallel lives, making sure the balance is never tipped and fate's film of events will stay true to its trail."
"So, I'm talking to some sort of Deux ex Machina? Is that it?" I reiterated in a bored tone. "This is some sort of warped dimension where you rule over… universes and its parallel dimensions?"
An amused hum echoed around me. "Yes, soul. For a human soul, you catch on quicker that most of your kind."
I huffed. "Of course. My previous job needed me to be quick on my feet and mind. In fact, I was a…" I said, but trailed off as I noticed that I couldn't find the following words. I was a what? A… human, yes, but, what was I? What did I do? Why was I so sure that the way I acted now was a result of whatever I used to do?
"Do not bother to remember." It said, as if reading my thoughts and noticing my current dilemma. "Once your soul leaves your body, the cycle of peace and chaos will revert your soul's mind to a blank state. You will not recall anything from your past life as you move on to your next state of everlasting afterlife."
Hearing it say that sparked a feeling of anger inside of me. "What do you mean I can't remember? Afterlife? I get that this shit—" I said as I gestured all around me. "— is freaky and no way easy to understand, but I'm pretty sure I'm still alive!"
"No, you are not." It said. "You are simply a soul without a body. You have met your demise in your universe and I called upon you here before the cycle of peace and chaos would lay claim on you."
"What?!" I yelled. "Listen, you—!"
But even if I was to rant, what was there to rant about? Why was I even angry about no longer being alive? I held the side of my head, trying to physically rack it in hopes that some recollection or any type of memory would resurface before I woke up and started chatting to whatever was in front of me. But as hard I tried, nothing came up. A simple blank and empty noise filled my head the further and deeper I tried to think.
"As I've said, it's pointless." It resumed, figuring out that I was too upset to even continue speaking. "When a soul dies, you are cleansed and your memories of your past life is removed before you can move on to the cycle. But I claimed your soul and summoned it here before you could move to the cycle… on the premise that you will accept what I will offer."
"Offer?" I repeated, finding myself snapping out of my own trance. "You mentioned you summoned me here… if you could do whatever magic-shit show a being like you can, then what the hell would you need me for?"
"Powerful and everlasting as I may be, I am limited to interfere directly in the affairs of the universes I hold." It said in what I could only describe as woe. "When a singular outer force penetrates and ruins the balance of one world, I am unable to directly correct the anomaly and revert the balance. That is, however, where you will come to."
"Oh fuck, this sounds like a deal with the devil." I mumbled in disdain. Regardless of having no memory of who I was and what I used to be in my past, I knew my personality and the way I currently responded in my situation was at least appropriate. I mean, if you encountered a ridiculous glowing giant who spews monologues about universes and balance-tipping events hoohah, wouldn't you just be the least bit irritated?
"Here on my palms are two worlds," it spoke as it raised its two palms to emphasize the two orbs floating above its palms. "On my left, the red world. Riddled with mystery, magic, and techniques that only mankind in other dimensions could dream to witness and attempt to succeed. On my right, the gray world. The world where you resided in and where you lived your few decades in before your untimely demise."
"You could've given that world a bit more flare in its description aside from it being responsible for my death, you know."
"If you accomplish this task I will assign you," it continued, ignoring my previous remarks. "You will be able to return to the cycle of peace and chaos and, as a reward, I will grant you a chance to reminisce all memories of your past life."
My interest perked. Right now, all I had was this instinctive speaking manner I'm sure developed over years of living in my previous existence and this odd humanoid shape I manifested as to act as my form. While the feeling of being weightless and light enough for nothing to anchor me in this plane, it felt empty and lacking. There was nothing but my awareness in this spatial surrounding and now that I was keenly mindful of it, I wanted to get rid of the feelings of void that filled my entirety. If being able to relive my memories of my previous life, even just once, maybe I will be able to feel something more solid and concrete in what little my being holds.
"The deal seems fair." I said. "But what are you going to make me do in the first place?"
A few moments of silence passed once more. If I hadn't focused on staring at the form in front of me, I would've forgotten that it was still present in the room. The feeling of the atmosphere was filled with my own anticipation as I started to wonder whether I should've asked in the first place.
"You will change the fate of this world."
It lowered its left palm to me. As I watched as the orb neared me in front of me, I noticed figures of silhouettes flash on its surface. I made out still images of men wielding glowing limbs, men with humanoid figures hovering behind them and fighting alongside them, and an ominous figure of a man with glowing red eyes.
"As fate is turbulent, it is still set in stone." It spoke. "But the individuals of this dimension are powerful. Powerful enough to teether the balance among peace and chaos and just now, the existence of one particular monster has tipped the fate of the entire world."
My gaze stayed on the surface of the red orb in front of me. The man's silhouette was turned back to me, so I couldn't make out his face. But I could make out a jagged scar around his neck and some sort of mark located behind his left shoulder.
"Your task is to eliminate this man, alongside the foes destined to fight against him; the Joestars and their allies." It said. The red orb on its hand started to glow as the silhouettes and figures became more apparent and clearer to make out. A man with red hair, a man with dark skin, a man with blue eyes, a man with a prosthetic hand, and a man with green eyes.
"In this dimension, they are fated to battle against one called Dio, who has achieved superhuman prowess that exceeds even what I could expect." It continued to explain while I half-listened to its words and paid more attention to the faces that flashed on the surface of the orb. Something about them seemed familiar and the odd feeling tugging inside of me screamed for my mind to remember what it was about the faces that pulled a vague feeling of nostalgia inside of me.
I looked away from the orb and up at the figure. "So I have to help these… Joestars defeat Dio? Just like that? Sorry, but I don't think I can. If this Dio man is messed up, then I probably won't be able to kill him. The Joestars, or whoever they are, should be more than enough to defeat them."
"One would think so, yes." It said as it closed its palm where the red orb resided. When it reopened its palm, the orb disappeared as a formless energy took its place and floated above it. "However, as their destiny approaches, things have gone awry and now even I cannot control or maintain the balance in this world as he has managed to bring out the power of a stone that shouldn't have existed in his own timeline. An outer force has tipped the balance of this dimension, and the only way to return it to its original state is to bring another outer force— Hence your existence will be to provide them the necessary assistance needed in order to eliminate this Dio."
Its palm neared me and the energy slowly morphed and formed into a humanoid shape. Its entire body was encased in bright lighting, making it impossible to speak of its physical appearance. All that can be made out was that it had six arms in total with three one each side.
"You will be reborn— reborn as a human of the universe where the Joestars and Dio reside in. You will partake in a mission that is not just paramount to the safe of the Joestars, but its entire world as well. You must defeat Dio, destroy the stone, and save the Joestars from their imminent doom."
Hearing those words made me feel a heavy and grudging feeling twist inside of me. What kind of idiot would suggest me for such an important mission? Defeat Dio, a man that even the bearer of fates is paranoid of, and destroy a stone that suggests is the source of the anomaly in their world?
"And once you finish your task," It said. "I will grant you your memories as reward and you will return to your bodiless form and resume your afterlife, as if nothing ever happened."
As I took all this information in, I could only imagine the kind of events that would happen. While I may be in a state where I desire nothing and my only goal is to achieve peace with my own soul, another chance of life seemed tempting. I may have experienced a few decades of life already which lead me to die already, but if I were to have another chance in life…
"Even if I were to be reborn in that world, how would you know I would be of any use in the mission to defeat Dio?" I asked, my tone wavering at the thought of living once more. "And how would I even be able to join the mission? I may not remember anything of my previous life, but even now, everything doesn't make sense if you plunge me into a world where one who shouldn't exist just… suddenly does."
Yet another amused hum resounded around me.
"Soul, I may not directly intervene with the balance of the dimensions I hold, but because you are my link, I may be able to allow you a way inside the world without balance spiraling out of control." It pointed out. "You must simply take the place of one who is destined to perish and become their identity."
"You mean, become another person?" I sputtered out in disbelief. "Are you crazy, I can't pretend to be someone else!"
"Worry not, you will not pretend." It reassured. "You will be reborn as an infant fated to die the day they set their eyes open. I will send your soul to occupy their body, and fate will bring you towards the Joestars where I will bestow upon you two things to serve as your tools to defeat Dio and destroy the stone in his possession."
"Hopefully these are gifts are amazing enough to kill Dio or at least make sure I don't die before anything horrible happens."
"So, we have an accord?" It asked, reaching out its palm where the previous humanoid energy stood above its palm.
I stared at the palm for a moment. The heaviness of the agreement and the benefits seemed too good to be true, and even though the awareness of the threat has been exposed to me, it will only be when I face the danger in front of me will the realization dawn on me.
I stared at the humanoid figure in front of me before glancing at the looming giant above. "And what happens if I fail? Die or be unable to help them defeat Dio and destroy whatever stone you're talking about."
"You will be enveloped in the same dark fate that world will succumb to." It answered simply, as if it was common knowledge to know about your impending doom should you accidentally screw up. "And because you will become a part of that world, I will not be able to intervene and instead the world will submit to total and complete devastation."
"Great, the literal pressure of the world weighing down on my shoulders." I grumbled in distaste. "I shouldn't have asked!"
"No, your burden will be shared by the Joestars and their allies. But you will be there to make sure that the anomalies will not bring about the failure of the Joestars' destiny."
"Again, pressure of the world weighing on my shoulders. Also, how would I be able to help anyway? I can't tell the future."
"You will know about a future, but not the definitive future." It said. "But it all depends on you. I will provide what you will need, but how you will ascend above those trials and return the balance to this world. If you are not up to it, then I will return you to your aimless, floating existence."
I stayed quiet, pondering on the way it worded its sentences. Giving it some more thought didn't make much of a difference either. There was nothing else that awaits me should I decline the offer aside from blissful ignorance as I pass on to the next phase of afterlife. As I had already and apparently lived out a life before this whole hullabaloo, finding solace and peace should be the next item in the agenda.
But the thought of breathing and living again. The thought of being able to touch and feel objects around me, to be able to have a second chance to live among humans and become once more again. The temptation was strong— strong enough to pull me away from what were supposed to be baseless and needless thoughts. Emotions burned with intensity from within like a fire rekindled by an entirely new spark as countless possibilities lay in front of me, should I choose to grasp it.
"Well?"
The expectant tone from its voice didn't go over my head. I knew that it was becoming impatient with me dawdling and dancing around my final decision. But the answer was already final.
"You got a deal."
And just like that, the space around us started to collapse. The planets and constellations surrounding us disappeared as the entirety of the space turned blank. Violet shaking and loud tremors resounded loudly around us as everything about the realm suddenly seemed to collapse.
"You, who willingly chose destiny amongst the lineage of Joestars!" It boomed loudly as it raised its hands upwards. "The clock of time has begun to tick! Destiny and fate, the legacy of bloodlines shall now entwine! Behold, soul. The fate of this dimension lays on your hands!"
"What the actual fuck?!" I screamed as the being in front of me continued its own monologue. Amidst the chaos that occurred all around us, I felt several tendrils manifest below me. They slowly snaked upwards before suddenly snapping forward and latched onto both of my lower limbs. "What the hell?! What's happening?!"
"Chase the blood of history! Balance the tides! Go, soul! March to destiny!"
The tendrils suddenly tightened and, with a forceful pull, lead me downwards. I stretched my arms out in alarm as I was pulled down to the depths of the unknown against my will at what seemed like sonic speed. Unsure on whether this would be the end, I allowed myself the pride of having an iconic string of last words as I descended downwards to the darkness.
"FUCKING HELL!"
