Sonic and his team (Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Cream) ran through the winding hallways of Eggman's newest base. Sonic was of course leading the way to the fat man himself. All of his bases were built in a similar style, Egghead not willing to change even if it would help him. He smirked as he entered the control chamber where Eggman was sitting in his floating chair, an evil grin plastered on his face as the mobians ran inside.
The human pressed a couple of buttons and ordered his robots to attack. Sonic ran and easily defeated most of them.
"Hey! Leave some for us!" Tails moaned.
"Sorry!" he yelled as he dodged a laser from from Eggman's personal couch, "Hey, Egghead! Over here! Nope! Over here! You're gonna have to move faster than that to catch me!" he jeered, running from side to side as quick as his name suggested.
"Stand still you little rat!" the man roared. Suddenly, a green energy beam hit Eggman's control console from behind. The fat warlord spun around to find a black and red hedgehog hovering over him with a deadly scowl.
"Sh-Shadow! What are you doing here?!"
"Hey, Shads!" Sonic waved. Shadow glared at the nickname, but returned his focus to the man in the hover-recliner.
"For your information, Doctor," and Shadow revieled a devilish smirk that was rare for said hedgehog, "I was bored, and you happened to be in the neighborhood."
Behind dark glasses, Eggman's eyes grew wide. While Sonic fought to keep the peace, Shadow did pretty much whatever he wanted. The darker hero sped towards him and launched a Chaos spear at him. Eggman only barely managed to avoid the shot.
"We were here first!" Amy yelled, as she swung her hammer into another robot, smashing it to bits. Shadow only frowned at her before spindashing into a large hoard of machines and stopping beside Sonic. Said hedgehog smirking at the one beside him.
"I told them you could be fun sometimes," he laughed. Shadow rolled his eyes.
But in between their banter, Eggman pressed another button. A vortex of swirling green light appeared between the mobians and himself. The wind around them picked up; Sonic and Shadow felt themselves being pulled into the portal. Both tried to run the other way, but the force was too strong.
"Can't get far enough," Sonic struggled. Shadow grunted but said nothing.
"Aaaahh!" they yelled as they were both sucked into the portal. But before anyone else could say or do anything, the portal closed and Eggman broke his own machine, trapping them on the other side in who knows where.
"MWAHAHAHAHAHA!" he laughed, "Now no one can save you!"
The remaining heroes got into their fighting stances, but then Knuckles's eyes widened in surprise.
"The Chaos Emeralds! I can't sense them anywhere!" he exclaimed.
"Huh?" and then Eggman realized, "NOOO!"
With the Wild Kratts
Chris and Martin raced on their hoverbikes across an open field, yelling their excitement in the wind. Chris pulled ahead of his older brother with a smirk on his face. But he suddenly stopped as a large green portal opened up a few yards ahead of him. Martin, luckily, stopped beside him.
"What in the world?!" they yelled at the same time. Two small forms fell out of the portal. The Kratt brothers rode closer to them as the portal disappeared.
They were both only about three feet tall and looked like giant hedgehogs. One was blue while the other was black with red stripes on his quills. But what stuck out the most to them was that they were both wearing white gloves and shoes! However, the blue one's shoes looked like running sneakers while the other's looked more like wheel-less roller skates. The black and red one also had large gold bands on his wrists and ankles.
The blue one had landed with his face in the dirt, promptly sitting up and spitting out whatever happened to fall into his mouth. The black one had landed on his back and sat up while rubbing the back of his head.
"Every time," the blue one complained. The black and red one sent a very human like smirk his direction, but it quickly fell as he looked in their direction. The Kratts' faces were wide with shock. Did those animals just talk?!
With Sonic and Shadow
Sonic turned to see what Shadow was looking at, when his eyes turned on to their spectators. The blue hedgehog immediately yelled.
"Bug people!"
"No, no, no," the blue 'bug person' said as he pulled off the hard surface on his head, "They're just helmets. We're humans."
Sonic and Shadow stood and got into battle positions, as the two humans jumped off of their floating bikes. Having only a limited experience with humans, they weren't exactly ready to trust them. The one with brown hair and green jacket held out his hand in a warning gesture.
"Wait, Martin, we don't know anything about them. For all we know they could be dangerous."
Shadow mumbled something under his breath, and Sonic couldn't help but smirk at what he guessed he said. Martin took a few tentative steps in their direction.
"But they can talk, Chris! This is a scientific breakthrough!"
The shorter human rubbed his chin in thought and watched the blond one inch closer to them. Sonic focused on Martin while Shadow kept his eyes on Chris, who was trying to reason with the other human.
"Bro, look! If I didn't know any better, I'd say that they're about to attack!"
At this thought, Martin stopped and looked into Sonic's emerald eyes. For a moment, neither said anything. Sonic gazed into Martin's eyes. He wouldn't tell it to anyone, but he could practically read someone by just looking into someone's eyes. They are the window to the soul after all. In Martin, he saw honesty, curiosity, and reliability. He was no villain.
"Hang on, Shads... I think we can trust these guys," he said as he held up his gloved hand for Martin to shake. The human stood dumbfounded for a couple of seconds.
"What? Haven't you ever heard of handshake before?"
"Oh! Yeah! Totally! I just wasn't expecting some...one like you to know what it was," Martin laughed nervously, as he shook hands with him.
"We're not barbaric," Sonic scowled, a rare occurrence. Chris walked up to them and shook hands with them.
"Sorry. We're just not used to talking to animals that can talk back."
Shadow scoffed, "In case you haven't noticed, we're not just animals. We're mobians."
"Wait a second," Sonic gasped, "What planet is this?"
The two brothers looked at each other in confusion before Chris answered, "Earth."
Sonic's eyes lit up at the word, and Shadow seemed to be showing a new interest as well. Neither Kratt could understand why.
"Which way is Station Square?" Sonic asked.
"Where?" Martin asked.
"You know Station Square. Big city in what humans call 'the states."
"Sorry, we've been almost everywhere on this planet, and I don't think we've ever heard of a city called Station Square."
Sonic's ears fell in disappointment, "Oh..."
Shadow gave him a side-long glance, "I guess this isn't the same Earth we're used to."
"Yeah. But that just means we get to explore a whole new dimension!" Sonic cheered, instantly cheering up, "And we might just find some new places to race."
Chris and Martin just stood there, while they talked, trying to wrap their heads around how two animals were actually talking in a language they understood.
"Uhh, this may seem like a dumb question," Martin interrupted, "But do you have names?"
Sonic practically busted out laughing before he remembered that they hadn't heard of him.
"I'm Sonic. Sonic the hedgehog."
"The name's Shadow. Shadow the hedgehog, and no, Sonic and I are not related," he said with his arms crossed and a usual frown on his face.
"I'm Martin Kratt, and this is my brother Chris," the blond greeted while pulling Chris into a side hug. Said brother rolled his eyes good-naturedly. He quickly got out of the hug and knelt down in front of them. Sonic saw that he was more controlled, observant, and knowledgeable. A natural scientist.
"Unbelievable. A whole new species! I can finally mark that off my goal list."
Both hedgehogs began to feel a little self-conscious, as he asked, "How long have you been able to talk?"
"We've always been able to," Sonic admitted. Then he looked up at the setting sun, "But we can play twenty questions later. I hate to ask this, but do you guys know of any place we can crash for the night?"
"Sure! You can stay with us on the Tortuga!" Martin chirped, "And you can meet the rest of the Wild Kratts crew!"
"Wild Kratts?" Shadow questioned.
"It's what we call ourselves," Chris answered, "We help protect our planet's wildlife and study different animals and teach about their special abilities."
"We call them creature powers."
"Cool!" Sonic said with a wink and signature thumbs up. Shadow hmphed.
"Hop on!" Chris invited, hopping onto his hoverbike and patting the space behind him. Martin did the same. Shadow rode with Chris, not as willing to trust the humans as Sonic was. But he knew that he could trust Sonic's judgement; it would just take him a little bit longer. These guys were zoologists, and he didn't know what kind of tests they might want to conduct.
Shadow glanced over Sonic, who was riding with Martin. He looked almost bored at the speed they were going, and he held in a chuckle. He wouldn't admit it, but he was feeling the same way at the current speed they were going.
"How fast can this thing go?" he asked Chris.
"70mph on an open stretch," he admitted proudly. No wonder I feel like I'm about to fall asleep. This feels more like a casual stroll than a ride. He looked over at Sonic and knew that he was thinking the same thing as himself, I should have ran.
Both hedgehogs's eyes widen at the sight of the giant turtle ship that stood at the far end of the prairie. It was gleaming in the last few days of the setting sun.
"Wow," Sonic gasped. The two brothers smiled as they stopped at the open hatch.
"Welcome to the Tortuga," Chris waved cheerfully. Three more humans came out to greet them. Two were women. One had dark hair in a ponytail, a yellow jacket, dark tank top, jeans, and sneakers, while the other had dark skin, even darker bushy hair that was held back by a headband, a burgundy t-shirt, yellow pants, and sneakers. The third human was a guy with orange hair covered by a baseball cap, a gray sweater, red plaid shorts, and tennis shoes. The girls' eyes landed on the two hedgehogs, who shifted uneasily as they hopped off the hoverbikes.
"Oh my goodness!" the one in the yellow jacket exclaimed as she ran and tackled Shadow in a tight hug, "Their so cute!"
Sonic stiffled a laugh at Shadow's struggle to free himself until he felt a pair of arms wrap around himself. The other girl was holding him in an equally strong bear hug.
"They're adorable!" she squealed.
The Kratt brothers laughed, as the girls practically squeezed the life out of their new guests. Normally, they wouldn't do such a sudden thing, but they guessed it was a girl thing.
The one who held Shadow captive stroked his quills, "Yes, you are so cute, aren't you? Yes, you are!"
Sonic underwent similar torture, "Who's the real cutey here? You! That's who!"
This earned deep throaty growls from both hedgehogs.
"LET US GO!" Sonic and Shadow yelled at the same time. Both girls screamed and detached themselves from the hedgehogs.
"Wha-what? How is that even possible?" the dark skinned girl stammered. Shadow fixed his quills, so that they were back into their original shape.
"Dare to do that again, and you will sorely regret it," he threatened darkly, as he glared at his previous captor. And if one were to judge by his voice alone, they would know that he had every intention of carrying out that threat.
Sonic immediately stepped into to diffuse the situation, "Cool it, Shads. She didn't know," he said as he stepped between them. After a five second stare down, Shadow crossed his arms and replaced his snarl with a classic frown.
"Tell anyone about this, and my threat will extend to you."
Sonic shuddered, and then turned towards the strangers, "Hi, I'm Sonic the hedgehog, and this Shadow. He can get a bit grumpy when someone messes with his quills," he added with a mischevious smirk. Shadow rolled his eyes.
"I'm Aviva," the girl in the jacket smiled. If she was surprised about the fact they could talk, she took it very well. The man with red hair, on the other hand, fainted.
"I'm Koki," the other girl stuttered, "and that's Jimmy."
"He'll wake up in a minute," Martin stated playfully, "He doesn't handle surprises very well."
"Are you brothers?" Aviva asked. This earned another much louder growl from the two hedgehogs. Both of them quickly turned angry, and their ears flattened against their skulls.
"I'd rather die than be related to that faker," Shadow snarled.
"I'd walk for the rest of my life before I could ever be his brother," Sonic snapped.
Chris and Martin shared a curious glance as they watched the two practically growling at each other as they denied any connection between them. For two who say they aren't brothers, they really act like it, Chris thought. He quickly tried to think of a change in subject.
"Ok, we get it," he said as he stood between them, "So why don't you guys tell us a little bit about yourselves?"
Sonic and Shadow glared at each other before they blew off whatever steam they had left.
"Fastest thing alive," Sonic announced proudly.
"Ultimate Life form," Shadow stated, the faintest hint of similar pride tainting his voice.
"Really?!" Aviva questioned, her eyes full of curiosity, "How did you two get such titles as that?"
"Born with it," they said simultaneously before letting out a groan at the jinx. The humans tried to hide their laughter, but failed miserably.
"How about we get something to eat?" Martin suggested. Everyone hastily agreed.
Jimmy woke up at the mention of food, and after getting over the initial shock of the two mobians, he went and fixed supper. But what he brought out of the kitchen for Sonic and Shadow to eat made them scrunch their noses in disgust.
"Whatever it is, I refuse to eat it," Shadow stated firmly.
"Ditto."
"Oh come on. I thought hedgehogs liked cat food," Jimmy moaned, wondering what he did wrong.
"Maybe the hedgehogs here do, but we aren't what you'd consider normal," Sonic said as he pinched his snout, "Got any chilidogs?"
"Uh.. Yeah, just gimme a sec," and he quickly ran back into the kitchen. Shadow turned to see Chris and Martin typing something into the strange watches they wore. He raised an eyebrow and waited for one of them to answer.
"Taking notes," Chris answered his silent question, "You two are very unique."
"It'd be cool if we could get a DNA sample," Martin not so subtly hinted.
"No way, man," Sonic interjected, "Solemly swore to never let a human have my genes."
"There are humans where you come from?" Koki asked.
"Not as many as there are here, but yeah. Shads here even works with some of the good ones from time to time. But for the most part we fight this one dude named Eggman. Don't ask about the name, cause I'm just as clueless. Anyways, he's always trying to take over the planet and stuff like that," he explained.
"And you two stop him?" Chris asked.
"Not just us. I've got a bunch of pals back home that help out. There's my adopted little brother named Tails. He's a two-tailed fox and is wicked smart. And a red, hot-headed echidna named Knuckles, who is admittedly pretty tough with his fists. A rabbit named Cream and her pet chao Cheese. She is surprisingly fierce for a little bunny."
"And then there's Sonic's girlfriend, Amy. A pink hedgehog with a VERY big hammer," Shadow interrupted. All eyes turned to Sonic, who was glaring at Shadow.
"She is not my girlfriend," he said through gritted teeth.
"That's not what she says," he replied calmly as he sipped from a glass of water. Sonic folded his arms and smirked.
"And what about Rouge?"
Shadow spat out the water he was drinking before collecting himself once again, "What about her?"
"Oh come on," he pressed, "You don't save every person that happens to be in danger, and yet you always make sure that she's safe."
"She's part of the team. I do have some loyalty, believe it or not."
Sonic was undeterred, "And was that little chat over coffee last week just you being a loyal team member?"
The next thing the blue blur saw was a cup sailing through the air at a speed even he couldn't dodge. It smacked him between the eyes, and he rubbed said spot as Shadow answered, " Actually, yes. She was trading off information, and the coffee shop is a fairly inconspicuous rendezvous point."
Sonic scoffed but said nothing, head and pride hurt by his dark counterpart. Shadow simply stood, disregarding the fresh plate of chilidogs set before them, and walked up the stairs to the higher level. Sonic watched him leave and let out a sigh he didn't know he was holding.
"Where's he going?" Aviva asked.
"To think," he answered, knowing exactly where he was heading.
Shadow leaned over the safety rail and looked up at the billions of stars above him. His ruby eyes landed on the perfectly whole full moon above, and he took in a deep breath. He had often dreamed of a view of the sky like this. Unhindered by the man-made lights, when their brightness was unintentionally dimmed. It was magnificent. Beautiful even. A cold wind blew through his quills as he stargazed, refreshing his buzzing mind. His tense body began to relax somewhat in the stillness, but only a little bit. He closed his eyes and tried to clear his head. But he did more than that. His eyes shot open as he felt a familiar energy.
"The Chaos Emeralds! They're here!"
This is my first crossover, so please don't be harsh! R&R and follow! Ciao!
