The commotion, it turns out, is about a young man that arrived at the house. Ruby spots him as she's descending the stairs. He seems innocent enough, even friendly—at least, until he opens his mouth.
"I'm looking for a Ruby Rose?" he says quietly.
In front of her, she can see Nora and Jaune immediately tense, and she feels herself stiffen. The incident with Tyrian isn't far behind them, and it gives all of them a reason to be a bit suspicious of anyone who turns up looking for any member of their little group.
"Who wants to know?" Ren asks tersely. To someone who didn't know him well, he would almost seem calm.
But Ruby knows him too well to miss the way her friend is eying the newcomer warily, his fists clenched by his sides. Whoever this guy is, he better watch what he says. It's nice to know that her team has her back when someone comes looking for her, no matter how friendly they seem. Being reminded of that helps ease a little of the fear that's been stubbornly clinging to her since they fought with Tyrian.
"Look, you guys, I don't mean any harm." Their visitor holds up his hands, clearly attempting to placate their suspicions. Apparently he wasn't expecting such a wary welcome. "My name is Oscar. A guy named Qrow sent me here. He told me I'd find a Ruby Rose that I could talk to?"
"My uncle," Ruby murmurs to herself, before turning to face Oscar. "You said Qrow sent you here?"
"Yes," Oscar confirms, sounding a bit relieved. Probably grateful that their suspicion has eased a bit. "He should be here soon. Hopefully he can help explain things a bit."
Yeah, Qrow definitely has a lot of explaining to do.
"So, you're Ruby Rose?" Oscar asks, pulling her out of her thoughts. Ruby nods. He looks at her curiously. "You have silver eyes."
Well, Ruby might have recovered from her earlier headache, but all this stuff with Oscar is bringing it right back again. Oscar, who apparently is Ozpin reincarnated, had found Qrow while he was out at the bar and proved who he was, and now would be joining them at their house in Haven. And overseeing their training, apparently.
At least their meeting left Qrow in better spirits than before, if his drunken cheer is anything to go by. It's definitely nice to see after how frustrated he'd been after their meeting with the headmaster. Ruby just wishes he wouldn't drink so much, but she's not holding her breath on that one.
Besides the matter of the whole Ozpin reincarnation thing, Oscar seems like a nice enough guy, and having another friend around is more than welcome. Having more people to rely on is nice, especially since Qrow had told them about the true extent of what they're facing. This goes way beyond just fighting the Grimm.
Ruby has no idea how they're supposed to fight that kind of enemy, but she's trying not to worry about it too much right now. For now, she's just going to focus on training to get stronger. At least that's something that she knows how to do.
And when she does have to face the shadowy enemies that Qrow told them about, she won't be doing it alone. She'll have her friends by her side.
Although training isn't the only thing she can do right now. After all, with what happened at Haven earlier, Ruby has some suspicions that something might be going on at the school. She's not sure what, can't quite put her finger on what it might be, but it definitely is something that she wants to check out more.
It's time to do some investigating at Haven Academy. And Ruby knows just where to start.
"Hey, Oscar," she asks casually, plopping down on the couch next to the younger boy. "This is your first time in Haven, right? Wanna take a tour of Haven Academy?"
