Chapter 26

The next day, everyone had gathered around the TV in the lair. They were waiting for the news report. After they took the family in, they were fully questioned and they basically admitted to everything. They didn't even try to deny it. Mike found out that Logan didn't have anything to do with it. The day that he and Nathaniel met up was only to tell him that his father had been killed. Kylie was happy to hear that. She went up to the surface to go and get him, so he could meet the rest of the family.

Mike also found out why May was targeted. Apparently, May admitted to him that she did sleep with another person while with Dirk. To Nathaniel, she not only cheated, but left a child behind. That was worse than just cheating to him. Dirk was not too happy about that. It made him feel even worse than before. He knew in that moment he had to let this part of his life go.

"In other news, the city's serial killer has been caught. Thanks to the heroic efforts of Detective Michael Evans. Nathaniel Shelton, age 24, Jaime Shelton, age 22 and Henry Shelton, age 50 have been taken into custody. They were all involved in the deaths of eight women."

"I still can't believe that a detective on the force was actually a part of this." Melanie said.

"The whole family is crazy. They're gonna be put away for a long time." Raph added.

There was a shot of the family being taken in. As they are walking passed the paparazzi, Henry yells something that none of them expected to. "Michael Evans is working with monsters! I saw it with my own eyes! He was not working alone!"

"Welp, that's probably not good." Mikey said.

"I don't think it should be a problem. Who's going to believe a family of psychotic killers?" Mike reassured them.

"You'd be surprised." Don said.

Mike thought for a moment. "I'll go see if I can smooth things over in that regard then." he got up to leave the lair. "I'll see you guys later."

As he was leaving, Kylie came in with Logan. "Mom, Dad, I brought him."

"And that's our cue to go somewhere else." Leo said.

Everyone except Raph and Melanie left the living room area just as Kylie brought an amazed Logan over to the couch. "Nice to see you again, Logan." Melanie greeted.

She looked over to her husband when he didn't say anything. He just sat there with his arms crossed, giving the teenage boy a death glare. Melanie lightly elbowed him in the arm. "Yeah, hey." was all Raph said.

"Hey, sorry that our first encounter didn't go so well." Logan said as he tried avoiding direct eye contact with Raph.

"Dad, would you quit glaring at him." Kylie groaned.

Raph turned away from him with a huff.

"Anyway, we should be apologizing to you. We accused you of something you had nothing to do with. You told us you had nothing to do with it." Melanie said.

"Yeah, but if I saw someone talking to who I thought was a killer at the time, I might have done the same. So, it's okay. I don't blame you." Logan shrugged.

"That's sweet of you, hon." Melanie said with a smile. "Now... we have a feeling as to why you came down here. You seem to have taken a liking to our daughter."

He reached over and grabbed Kylie's hand and smiled at her. "Yes, I really have."

"You do know what this means, right?" Raph asked, basically grilling him. "You can't go out on typical dates, she can't be seen by other people, if she does, people will try to hurt her."

"I kind of figured that. When we first met, she was very secretive about her identity. So, as long as I get to see her, I'm fine."

Melanie shrugged and sat back in her seat. "That's good enough for me."

Kylie breathed a sigh of relief. "Dad?"

Melanie, Kylie and Logan all looked to him, waiting for an answer. Raph just rolled his eyes. "Fine." he growled out.

"Awesome!" she quickly hugged both of parents. "Thank you." she then grabbed Logan's hand and dragged him out of the lair. "Quick, let's get out of here before they change their minds."

"It was nice meeting you." Logan managed to get out before he was dragged out the door.

Melanie kissed her husband on the cheek. "You did good, babe." she said with a chuckle.

"Yeah, whatever." he said with a smirk.

Dirk sat down on the couch in Casey's house next to May, who despite being told otherwise, wanted to get out of the hospital as soon as possible. The two sat in an awkward silence for a while before Dirk finally said something. "I'm... glad you're okay." he said hesitantly.

"Yeah... thanks." she said back, nervously. "I didn't think you would care, honestly."

"I'm upset with you. That doesn't mean that I want you to die."

There was more silence as they both got quiet. "I've... been thinking about you a lot lately." she added suddenly.

Dirk had to fight back an eyeroll. "Oh, really."

May nodded. "Yeah, and I'm sorry for leaving the way I did. Leaving you to take care of our child by yourself wasn't fair."

"Yeah, it wasn't. I don't understand why you felt like you had to leave."

May looked down and twiddled her thumbs. "I don't know. I felt like everything was moving too fast and I panicked. I wasn't ready."

"Like I told you before. I wasn't rushing you. I asked if you thought about the future with me. There was literally no reason for you to feel any pressure. If just asking you if you could see yourself married to me stressed you out so much, or if you just wanted to sleep with whoever, then maybe we shouldn't have got together in the first place."

"You're right. I know, I'm sorry, but I realized that you are what's best for me."

Dirk couldn't fight back the eye roll that time. "And of course, you only realized this after you almost died."

May understood the outburst so she didn't bring it up. "I know it seems that way, but I swear it's not like that."

"What are you trying to say, May?" Dirk asked.

"I'm saying that... maybe we should get back together."

Dirk looked to her and then back at the floor. After all the heartache she put him through, she was just going to try and get back together like nothing happened. It was time he stood up for himself. He shook his head. "No... we can't."

"But..."

"No buts, May. I loved you and you clearly didn't feel the same. Your reason for leaving left me with no closure. Then come to find out you were sleeping with other people while you were with me and I have to find out through the lunatic that tried to kill you. If you have the audacity to ask me to get back with you then you clearly don't understand how badly you hurt me."

"And I said I was sorry." she said reaching out to hold his hand.

He pulled away from her. "Sorry is not going to cut it. Now, obviously, you can come and see Izzy whenever you want. She is your child just as much as she is mine, but this" he said pointing between the two of them. "is not happening again." he stood up and headed for the door before she could say anything else.

He made it outside and hid in an alleyway. Once he did, he took a deep breath. He actually felt a little bit better, but mentally and emotionally drained.

Amber stood out on the roof of her home, waiting for RJ to get here. She just wanted to be with him right now.

Now that the killer was taken in, she felt a little bit better. She still understandably, missed Toniann. She felt like, in a way, she was avenged. She became so lost in her thoughts that she didn't notice that RJ had shown up. He wrapped his arms around her from behind and Amber instantly jumped, but calmed down when she knew who it was. RJ chuckled. "Sorry about that. What are you thinking about?"

She just turned to him and looked up at him. "Nothing. Just... happy."

"Good... I like you even more like that."

Amber froze, surprised at the actual admission. "W-what? she stammered.

RJ shrugged. "I said I like you."

She turned to him and slapped him on the shoulder which he just brushed off with a light chuckle. "You can't just say things like that."

"Why not? It's true. I figured I should stop acting like it isn't." he leaned down to gently nuzzle her cheek. "Everything that has been happening lately, with the killer, and how much it hurt you when he took your friend. And especially when you were attacked. It all made me realize that I care so much about you. I would do anything for you." Amber could only remain silent at his confession. "How do you feel about me?" he asked her.

She was at a loss for words. "Are you... being serious right now?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

She looked up at him and could tell that he was absolutely serious. "Okay then... well, if that's the case. I like you too." she had always known how she felt about him, but was always too scared to say anything. Even now that she said it out loud, it still didn't seem real.

"Good, cause now I can do this." without anymore hesitation, he went in to kiss her and Amber didn't even try to stop him. She had been waiting for this for a long time. There's was no way she was going to stop this from happening.

With the city safe once again, everyone could get back to their normal lives, free of the terror of the Lady Killer and his helpers.

There was one person, one woman who was watching the news story, not because the killer had been caught. She was more interested in what the former and disgraced officer had said. "Michael Evans is working with monsters! I saw it with my own eyes! He was not working alone!" she leaned forward with a devious smile across her face. "Interesting." She stood up and made her way out of the room she was in, stepping over the bloodied bodies of a human woman and what looked to be a mutant tiger. "It seems New York has some secrets to uncover."

The End

Yep, I'm ending it there. Segway to the next story that'll happen... eventually.

Until then, there are other stories that I've written. You could try those out.
