Snow Problem For Daisy

Adapted by Davey Moore

Based on Snow Problem by Christopher Awdry

It was a blistering cold winter. Snow had fallen deep and hard, and the engines were finding it difficult whilst keeping at work ploughing through heavy drifts of snow…

"Eh…eh…!" Percy grunted, as he plowed hard against the heavy drifts. "So much…snow!"

He huffily spit out snow as it blew into his voice, only to find Rebecca approaching up ahead.

PEEP-PEEP!

"Keep it up there, Percy!" she called out, as she approached his direction and ploughed the heavy drift amongst her track.

"If the snow keeps falling, Rebecca," he pointed out, "we might be late and the Fat Controller wouldn't be happy with that."

He proceeded to plough the drift ahead of him, and noticed the red signal up ahead. He gradually let off steam and applied his brakes.

PEEP-PEEP!

"Hello, Percy!" Thomas greeted, as he came to a stop right beside him.

"Phew! Hi, Thomas!"

"Oh, dear," Thomas observed concernedly, raising an eyebrow at his best friend. "Are you alright?"

"I only just cleared the whole Branch Line!" Percy moaned. "And the snow only keeps falling, Thomas! How ever will we keep up at this rate?"

"Could be worse, Percy," Thomas assured him. "There's only more snow on the way. Driver predicts there to be a snowstorm later this afternoon, though he's not for certain."

Percy sighed with dismay, as both their signals turned green, and the two friends set off again.

"Even still," Thomas went on to himself, speaking rather amongst his two coaches behind him. "It's not delays that we need to worry on our Branch, especially since The Fat Controller has called Daisy down to help out…"

"Daisy?!" Annie spluttered.

"Oh, no," Clarabel groaned.

But Thomas only chuckled.

"Don't worry. You two won't have to be working with Daisy. She's just coming to look after our passengers connecting with Gordon's express while I'm on my quarry run. You can just wait in the shed til I'm back."

"Well, isn't that a relief?!" Annie sighed.

"Indeed!" Clarabel agreed. "Beats having to work with a highly-sprung diesel railcar like that!"

Thomas smiled meekly as he carried on towards Knapford.

Up at Harwick, Daisy was having a rest at the top station, just as Ryan returned from his goods run.

"Dear, oh, dear, Ryan!" she expressed pitifully, looking at the purple snowplow on his front. "Poor you! Having to wear that silly old thing! I, for one, consider myself lucky that I don't have to wear a thing like that!"

"Well, Daisy, this has been as much snow as I've encountered since I first arrived on Sodor," Ryan admitted. "Have you ever seen anything like it?"

"Yes," Daisy answered. "Many times! And I don't mind it one bit! In fact, I find it…magical!"

Ryan gazed at her with surprise as she went on.

"Anyways, the Fat Controller has called on me to fill in for Thomas with passengers from Gordon's express. It seems quite fit that I, being the highly-spring railcar I am would be asked to do the job. It shows how much he depends on me, and I won't need that bumpy old Annie and Clarabel to do the job."

"You'd best be careful, Daisy," Ryan warned concernedly, looking at the sky above him. "I've seen hints of dark clouds looming in on the way back from Arlesburgh."

"I'll be fine, Ryan," Daisy assured her friend, rather unconcerned as she rolled slowly out of the station. "Don't worry about moi!"

HONK-HONK!

Ryan watched with surprise as she rolled away, before sighing to himself.

On the way to Knapford Station, the snow began to fall lightly, and Daisy managed to view it in all its splendor!

Daisy chuckled lightly as a snowflake landed slightly onto her nose, then watched cheering and laughing in the field nearby. Some slid down the hill on toboggans, some threw snowballs at one another, and some even built a snowman right beside the line, much to Daisy's delight.

"What fun it all is!" she expressed joyfully to herself. "It's a pity the other engines don't like snow! I think it's magnifique!"

She pressed further on confidently till she reached Knapford at last and stopped right at the platform.

As Daisy arrived at Knapford, the Fat Controller was already there, waiting for her.

"Ah, Daisy! You're here! And all in good time too! Thank you for being flexible and showing up on such short notice!"

"You can count on me, sir! Highly-sprung and bang-up-to-date…!"

Sir Topham Hatt sighed and raised his palm to silence her.

"Um…thank you, Daisy. That'll do. Anyway, I do have records showing that weather reports indicate heavy chances of snow. I highly suggest you wait after Gordon arrives for your line to be cleared of snow. I wouldn't want you to get lost now."

"Not to worry, sir," Daisy assured him. "Snow is problem for me."

"N-no, I mean it," the Fat Controller firmly reminded her. "You mustn't leave the station til the Branch Line is cleared."

"But, sir…"

"That's my final word, Daisy."

He raised an eyebrow at her, before walking steadily back towards his office, leaving Daisy to splutter with disbelief.

"Great!" she huffed. "I'll be here for ages! I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about a little snow."

She looked fixedly at the clock above the station, as it went around minute-by-minute.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

With every passing moment, Daisy only became more and more anxious over when Gordon would show up!

"Come on!" she groaned. "What could possibly be holding up Gordon? I thought the express was a guaranteed connection…!"

"Daisy!"

Daisy looked over with surprise to see the stationmaster walking towards her and her driver.

"Ah, Daisy. Good thing you're here. I just received a call from Vicarstown," he informed them. "Cold weather conditions have held back the train from the Mainland, which means the express is delayed!"

"Delayed?!" Daisy spluttered. "Oh, great! And just when I thought this day couldnt' get any worse!"

At that moment, the snow began to fall harder, swirling in huge flakes lightly through the station and around Daisy.

Daisy chuckled lightly as the snow swirled gently around her.

"Magnifique!" she expressed happily.

"Yes," her driver somewhat agreed, albeit concerned, as he shook his head lightly. "Though I do sense a blizzard coming in. It's best we take caution."

"Oh, nonsense!" Daisy huffed. "The snow won't be any trouble for me, not as long as I have the rails to guide me."

"Hmm…" the driver wondered.

He was rather unsure as he paced about and met the guard a quarter way past Daisy's interior.

"Daisy hasn't got the weight that a steam engine has, you know," the guard admitted.

"Indeed," the driver agreed. "She can't just push her way through, and besides, we all know how Thomas got stuck, don't we?"

The guard laughed.

"He's told us enough times!" he remarked.

Daisy chuckled with slight amusement to this, before continuing to watch the snow fall from outside the station and the snow swirl up around her.

At last, Gordon arrived.

POOP-POOP!

"Sorry, Daisy," he humbly apologized. "The express was held up at Vicarstown because Caitlan was late and…"

"Say no more, Gordon," Daisy kindly cut off. "The stationmaster explained everything, and besides, it was fun being able to pass the time by watching the snow falling. Isn't it marvelous?"

"It was Caitlan's excuse for being late!" Gordon humbly added. "Being held back by a bit of snow! Huh! Engines at Vicarstown won't stop going on about it either!"

Daisy only laughed.

"It is only a bit of snow after all," she suggested. "I don't see the problem with it. A few flimsy flakes won't stop me!"

"Quite right," Gordon agreed, as his passengers departing his coaches and entering Daisy. "Well done. Anyway, I'd best be off. No time to gossip. I'm late."

He thundered gradually out of the station as soon as his guard's whistle blew.

POOP-POOP!

Daisy watched after him with surprise as he set off in the distance.

"Hmm…" she wondered, as her last door banged. "If Gordon can out in a spite of a teeny bit of snow, then I can do the same."

She waited till her guard's whistle blew, before setting off.

"A bit of snow won't stop me!" she confidently assured her.

HONK-HONK!

"Wait, Daisy. Wait!" the Fat Controller shouted, running out of his office in time to see her go.

"Oh," he wondered, sighing to himself with dismay.

At first, Daisy's journey didn't seem so bad. The sky was blue and snow fell gently. However, Toby was a slight bit more concerned as he trundled slowly and carefully along his own track.

"Hmm…" the old tram engine wondered, looking up at the sky. "Somehow I sense more snow on the horizon, Henrietta."

"Me too, Toby," his faithful coach agreed. "I sure hope we're able to get all these workmen home on time."

Up ahead, the pair spotted Daisy coming down the line at a tremendous rate.

HONK-HONK!

"Good day, Toby!" she greeted. "Isn't this snow just wonderful?"

DING-DING! DING-DING!

"It may appear so, Daisy," the tram engine replied. "But you'd best be careful. A heavy snowfall's due!"

"I'll be completely fine, Toby," Daisy calmly assured him, quite unconcerned as she passed.

Toby sighed with dismay.

"I did try to warn her," he admitted.

"She'll learn to listen soon enough," Henrietta kindly assured him.

Toby could only frown as he made his way forward, looking at the gradually darkening sky above him.

Unfortunately, it turned out that both the Fat Controller and Toby were right about the weather! As Daisy turned towards the valley, the sky began to darken and was soon enough blotted out completely by whirling snowflakes!

"Huh," Daisy wondered, as she watched the snowflakes magically gather up around. "This can't possibly be so bad!"

But her driver coughed as he leaned out of her cab.

"Yes, it can!" he told her.

And her driver was right; pretty soon, the wind started to pick up and the snow began to blow into Daisy's face!

"Ugh!" she spat, blowing snow away from her mouth. "My makeover! I don't like this!"

"Nor do I," her driver agreed. "I can hardly see where we're going!"

HONK-HONK!

"Look!" Daisy shouted, looking up ahead. "A signal box!"

"Good call, Daisy!" her driver laughed. "Surely the signalman will know what to do."

They stopped at the next signal box, and Daisy's driver got out to speak with the signalman. All Daisy could do was wait and watch with embarrassment as engines passed.

PEEP-PEEP!

Daisy watched as Henry passed, then as Donald and Douglas approached from the opposite direction with a van in between their tenders.

PEEP-PEEP! PEEP-PEEP!

"Wheeeeeee!" the twins shouted, as they raced down the line, inadvertently blowing snow into Daisy's face.

Daisy coughed huffily as the snow was blown into her face then sighed miserably as James approached from up ahead.

PEEP-PEEP!

"It's a good thing we steam engines always wear snowplows to help keep the tracks clear of snow!" he remarked.

Daisy glared at him as he passed, then groaned with discomfort as the wind and snow blew in her face.

At last, her driver returned, but with unexpected news…

"There are deep drifts of snow ahead, I'm afraid," he informed the passengers. "We can't get through, and there's a low probability we'll make it to Ffarquhar at this rate. Daisy will take you to the next station at Dryaw. We'll get you all home from there somehow."

"We'll be lucky if that happens," one passenger remarked.

The passengers all walked back aboard the train, and the driver hopped back aboard her cab.

HONK-HONK!

Daisy set off once more, determined to get the passengers to Dryaw on time.

"I must get these passengers to safety!" she groaned, pressing steadily forward. "I must!"

However, as he pressed on away from the signal box, a blizzard began to fall, and snow began to swirl into large heaps around Daisy's face. Eventually, she began to feel ill.

Daisy coughed miserably as she constantly spat snow from her face.

PEEP-PEEP!

"Oh, dear, Daisy," Percy gasped, as he passed by with his milk tankers. "Are you alright?"

"No, Percy!" Daisy groaned, spitting more snow from her face, til suddenly, she felt a hiccup!

"Oh, no!" she moaned. "Hiccups, now?"

Despite feeling ill, Daisy didn't give up! She was still determined to get the passengers to the next station on time!

"Must keep going!" she panted, trudging further through the snow. "Must keep going!"

But it was no use! All at once, Daisy came to a stop right in the middle of the line, as the snow continued to gather up into piles around her!

"Help!" she screamed. "I can't breathe properly!"

She coughed and spluttered, and then gasped for air, as her driver hopped off.

The driver checked her tubes, as Daisy and the passengers waited anxiously for results.

"It seems as if the snow has blocked your air intake," he said at last. "I've cleared it, but it might be a matter of time before it clogs up again. Might be worth the try."

Daisy coughed with disagreement, as her driver hopped back aboard and got her started again.

It turned out that the driver was right; as soon as Daisy started up again, the snow clogged up her air intake once more and prevented her from going forward.

Daisy coughed and spluttered as she came to a stop once more.

"It's no use, Daisy!" her driver said at last. "I'll just have to head back to the signal box and telephone for help! Now, you'll have to wait here and look after the passengers!"

Daisy watched as he set off then sat miserably as the snow gathered up around her.

After the driver left, the snow got so bad that Daisy was beyond the verge of bursting into tears!

At last, Daisy couldn't take anymore and cried so loud that the passengers aboard could hear.

"Why didn't I listen to Toby? Why didn't I listen to the Fat Controller and wait at the station till the line was cleared? Now I've spoilt everything, and I'm sure to be waiting out here til goodness knows when!"

At long last, her driver returned and was able to deliver a message to the guard.

"They promised to rescue us!" he informed him. "But goodness knows how they'll do it!"

"Affirmative!" the guard replied, then proceeded to climb aboard and stand before the waiting passengers.

"Help is indeed on the way," the guard informed them, only to a chorus of cheers in response, as he had another thought.

"Though I'm…not for how long it will take…"

"Huh!" Daisy scoffed to her driver. "Surely the passengers will be right, but what about me?"

"We'll just have to wait and see, Daisy," her driver responded, hopping back aboard. "Shouldn't take long though."

Daisy looked up at the sky, becoming more every minute as the snow piled up around her. She coughed and spluttered, as the snow piled higher around her.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

The driver joined the guard and the passengers for a cup of hot cocoa to pass the time, though all Daisy was wait for help to arrive

"The other engines were right!" she fumed. "Snow is nothing but trouble after all!"

They waited and waited, but no help came! Daisy only got more and more miserable by the minute. The snow drifted higher and higher, and piled up all around her.

Daisy sighed sadly amongst the deep drifts.

All of a sudden, Daisy heard a strange whirring sound from behind!

"Oh, no!" she groaned. "Not another blizzard!"

And it turned out that it wasn't; it was Harold the Helicopter!

"Harold?!" she spluttered.

"Greetings, chaps!" the helicopter chimed aloud. "I've only come to bring these stranded passengers back to base!"

Daisy watched with confusion as the ladder dropped down from Harold's interior.

Harold's crew let down the ladder and allowed the passengers to climb up, before providing them with hot drinks!

"Wait a minute!" Daisy wondered aloud. "What about me?!"

Her driver sighed.

"I'm sorry, Daisy," he regretfully informed. "I spoke with Harold's pilot. It doesn't seem like help will come for you til next morning. Not to worry, though. I've lit a lamp inside your cab. It should be able to last you the night."

Daisy was speechless, as she watched her driver climb up the ladder, and then Harold took off!

"Hang in there, Daisy!" he shouted out to her. "I'm sure help will come first thing in the morning!"

Daisy watched with surprise as he set off, then sighed with dismay.

"Just great!" she fumed. "So the passengers get to ride home in that whirlybird chair thing instead of aboard a highly sprung railcar like myself! Then I'm kept waiting in the snow till goodness knows when!"

Harold brought the passengers back to the airfield, where they were looked after until Thomas arrived to take them to Knapford.

"Well done, Harold!" he congratulated.

"Well done, Thomas!" the helicopter congratulated in return.

"These passengers will be making it home this ev evening for sure now!" Thomas went on, then he had a sudden thought.

"But…is Daisy alright?"

"Somehow I think it'll be a cold, blistering night before she is able to be rescued," he informed her. "The Fat Controller arranged for Toby to come to her aid first thing in the morning."

"Oh," Thomas wondered with surprise.

Harold's propeller started up, and he took off.

"Safe travels home, Thomas!" he called out, as he took to the air.

Thomas waited as his guard's whistle blew before setting off.

"Oh, dear," he expressed to Annie and Clarabel. "Poor Daisy!"

"It should serve her right for going out in that dreadful blizzard!" Annie suggested.

"Agreed, Annie!" Clarabel put in. "Though I must say, though, I hope she'll be alright."

"Quite right, Clarabel," Annie agreed.

"At least these passengers will all get home safely," Thomas suggested.

He maintained a slight smile on his face, as he advanced further along.

It turned out that Harold was right; the blizzard seemed to last all through the night. The snow continued to fall, and piled up all around Daisy.

Daisy coughed loudly and spat snow from her mouth aggressively.

"Well," she moaned bitterly. "Turns out that snow isn't quite as magnifique after all!"

She sat and waited, and looked at the starry night sky above her.

"Huh! What silly stuff!" she remarked, as the snow continuously piled around her. "And to leave me stranded here all night! My springs won't last this long!"

She sighed with dismay as her face went as red as a signal.

"This is the end for memoir…" she expressed.

Daisy had to wait out in the cold all night for help to arrive, but little did she know that her troubles were just about over, as next morning, Toby arrived.

DING-DING! DING-DING!

Daisy awoke with a start to see a familiar old steam tram stopped right beside her.

"Toby!" she expressed with joy.

Toby smiled over at the railcar.

"Everything alright, Daisy?" he asked.

"No! Rather miserable, in fact, but I'll feel much better once I'm out of this mess!"

Daisy's driver, who had come to assist in the rescue operation, helped Toby's crew shovel the snow off of Daisy's line facing front, before Toby was able to back down on her.

DING-DING! DING-DING!

"Not to worry, Daisy!" he kindly assured her, as he pulled her slowly yet carefully along. "I'll have you at the DieselWorks for repairs in no time!"

"Oh, do hurry!" she begged. "Usually I'd say no rush so I can absorb the lovely snowfall, but now I'm pretty certain how much trouble it can be, and would rather be in safety of shelter from it, thank you very much!"

Toby laughed.

"Well, I did warn you about that blizzard, Daisy. Anyways, it's just a relief that you're alright."

"Yes," Daisy agreed, blushing with embarrassment as Toby pulled her along towards the DieselWorks.

Toby dropped off Daisy off at the DieselWorks, where Den and Dart were waiting.

HONK-HONK!

HONK-HONK!

"Hello, Daisy!" Den greeted. "Good to see you! We'll soon have you in good working order again!"

Daisy shot him a look of confusion, as Dart coughed slightly.

"What he means is…we'll have both your engine and your air intake fixed up in no time!"

"Eh, yes, yes. Engine. Air intake. Thank you very much, Dart!"

The Fat Controller was also at the DieselWorks, and he had some pretty stern words for Daisy!

"Daisy!" he boomed.

"Uh oh!" Daisy gasped, looking over as the Fat Controller walked over to face her from the railing.

"It's good that to see that you're alright, but whatever were you thinking?! I gave you specific orders not to go out til after the blizzard passed over!"

"I'm sorry, sir," Daisy expressed. "I didn't think the snow would be any trouble for me."

The Fat Controller sighed.

"Well, Daisy, now you do know, in spite of the damage you've caused to yourself by taking the risk you did. I do expect better from you in future in terms of being mindful of such conditions and learning to keep yourself safe."

"Yes, sir…" Daisy muttered, as the turntable lifted her up towards the hoist.

Daisy was at the DieselWorks all day and all night, as the men worked hard at repairing both her engine and her air intake!

"Oh, deary," she expressed, as the men checked her over. "I do wish the men could hurry so I can get back to Harwick as soon as possible. Anyways, it is nice to be in the shelter of somewhere warm and dry as opposed to out there in the blistering cold!"

She looked outside at the wind blowing and the snow falling hard as she finished her sentence.

The next morning, Daisy was repaired and ready to return home, as the hoist lowered her back onto the ground.

As soon as she was back on the ground, Daisy started her engine up, then smiled with relief.

HONK-HONK!

"Merci beacoup, gentlemen!" she called out to Den, Dart and the waving workmen. "Au revoir!"

She made her entrance out of the DieselWorks, as Den and Dart watched after her.

"Oh, well, uh, umm...oh revoir to you too, Daisy," Dart expressed.

"That engine," Den admitted. "No idea what she's saying. What do you suppose, Dart?"

"What she meant was," Dart responded, "was to thank us and to say some form of goodbye. She did seem very keen on both accounts as she spoke."

"Hmm…" Dart wondered, thinking hard.

Daisy was able to make it back to the top station at Harwick, where Ryan was waiting for his goods train to be loaded.

HONK-HONK!

PEEP-PEEP!

"Daisy!" Ryan expressed with joy. "Good to have you back then!"

"Feels good to be back, Ryan!" Daisy admitted. "In a spite of a little trouble with that silly, soft stuff…!"

She spat out falling snow from her mouth as she spoke, much to Ryan's surprise.

"Oh," the goods tank engine wondered. "Yes, I've heard about your little incident with snow, Daisy. I'm glad you're alright though."

"Thank you, Ryan," Daisy sighed, rather flustered.

"Tell me though," Ryan went on, rather curious, "what was it like? I'm sure that having to wait out in the snow must have been a real shock and…"

"I'd rather not talk about my experience. Thank you very much. I've learnt my lesson about snow and the trouble it can be, so how about we leave it at that?"

"Oh," Ryan wondered with surprise, then grinned. "Okay then. I'm glad you learnt your lesson then, and why it's essential that steam engines wear snowplows."

His guard's whistle blew and he was ready to go.

PEEP-PEEP!

"Bye, Daisy! See you later!"

Daisy smiled as she watched her friend leave, then shut her eyes as she rested at the station platform.

From that moment on, whenever another engine asked Daisy about snow, she would either have a different opinion on the matter or none at all…

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

"Silly, soft stuff if you ask me," she told Dexter and the children, having just dropped them off at school. "What a long, dreadful night it was for memoir… Anyways, it wasn't much of a pleasant experience!"

"Look on the bright side and think positively, Daisy!" Dexter replied. "At least you're okay now, aren't you?"

"Indeed," Daisy expressed. "It wasn't that long, come to think of it. I was only valiantly rescued the very next morning."

The children gathered round as she told her story with great emphasis.

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

PEEP-PEEP!

"Phew!" Duck sighed, as he arrived at Arlesburgh later that day across from Daisy and released the first Slip Coach. "Quite a cold day this is. Eh, slippies?"

"Quite so, Duck!" the first coach agreed.

"Capital observation!" the second one admitted.

"At least the rails aren't half as icy!" the third one expressed.

"What do you think, Daisy?" Duck wondered with curiosity.

"No comment!" Daisy bluntly replied. "Those coaches have said quite enough!"

HONK-HONK!

Duck watched with surprise as she left the seaside station without another word.

"Hmm…" he wondered. "I wonder what's gotten into her…"

… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …

"Not quite as magical as I originally supposed," Daisy expressed to the miniature engines, as she dropped off passengers at Arlesburgh West. "In fact, I'm lucky to be on my own set of wheels!"

"Sounds like you've had quite the adventure, Daisy!" Rex concluded, rather cheekily as he did so.

"Yes, as it happens…" Daisy solemnly admitted.

"It's too bad you diesel engines don't have snowplows like us!" Mike wondered cheekily, as he passed by with his own ballast trucks.

The rest of the miniature engines laughed as Daisy watched with bewilderment.

"So," she wondered to herself. "This is all just a laughing matter then, is it?"

She waited as her guard's whistle blew, then was off in a flash.

HONK-HONK!

Daisy just ignored them and carried on with her journey, none the wiser about snow.

"Silly, soft stuff!" she expressed, as she watched it fall, coughing and spitting it from her mouth.

Sorry I haven't done one of these in a while, but I thought I'd get back in the swing of briefly my stories and my experiences in writing them. This was a really fun story to adapt and write, and Davey Moore, I believe, was just the right writer in my mind to pen it, having much expertise with writing for Daisy and putting her front and center in the spotlight. This, to me, felt like a faithful adaptation for the most, other than the fact that Thomas appears and it doesn't take time during his visit to York. Also, instead of waiting a whole week, Daisy is instead rescued the next morning and learns her lesson in regards to her judgment of snow and the dangerous weather conditions she must heed in order to cope during the winter season. Dexter and the Slip Coaches were also fun to include at the end of the story for one-liners in this set, and also for to help Daisy reflect more sensibly on her experiences. Set 3 is coming along at a well-expected pace in my opinion. I decided to limit the amount of wintry/Christmas ideas and have fewer of them, because it felt like I was trying to force a theme in a Christmas/wintry type DVD every year with a title, and it works for the benefit of ideas I have each of my set. Anyways, I had lots of fun writing this one and incorporating Daisy's CGI series personality into a Railway Series adaptation. Feel free to leave to leave/express your thoughts, and as always, stay tuned for...
