–CONTENT NOTES–
This description of the musical performance, Shiny, is brought to you by the made-up Lalotai Treasures Studio.
–FORMAT NOTES–
It feels a little bit dramatic to have written the lyrics for Shiny the way I did, but it does still hold up, like, the cadence. How I hear it. Idk. It's a bit dumb-funny that it's so extra, so I left it mostly intact. Yell at me if it sucks. Or if it made you happy too.
MY NOTES
Hope the Tamatoa fans enjoy his song! Sorry if the articulation I used doesn't do it justice. Also, I was a lot busier than I thought I would be during the last stuttering leg of this awful year, and I want to make sure y'all's wait is worth it. The next two chapters will be up soon! -artisticRadifyer
Extended Summary:
After fighting the Red Death and a murderous tyrant by the name of Drago Bludvist, Hiccup wouldn't think he would have any more outstanding adventures as big as those. Yet, he must set off to try and stop this 'Darkness' that is spreading across the Barbaric Archipelago to save his village. Njord chose just him, a runaway heiress, and the demigod that triggered the decay, to fix things. But there is no 'team' in 'chosen,' and the mentally challenged chicken that might be food, can't change that.
Chapter 6 - Tamatoa
From behind the slits of his helmet, Hiccup saw specks below them that were probably their companions against rings of light, and worried about the end of this trajectory.
Moana was just a teen and Maui probably wouldn't catch the girl; even if he realized she had jumped down so quickly after him. They didn't need any injuries on this mission, and someone could at least sprain a foot if the current that pulled them deeper didn't slow down.
The duo's surroundings brightened and Hiccup could see what looked to be the surface of the water racing toward them. They busted through the end of their ride, but instead of the water being below them, it was still above them. Toothless' wings unfurled from their previously curled positions at his sides and they were wrenched a bit from the sudden catch of air. They had not completely recovered from the dizzying emergence in time to catch anyone, but Toothless caught a glimpse of the frailer teen tumbling down the side of a land structure below them. The pair took off past a peering Maui in the direction Moana fell.
They encountered seeming enemies almost immediately upon getting further from the entrance, and dodged the airborne creatures that swerved after them. The small swarm moved like bats, but Hiccup and Toothless were far too fast to be caught. Now further from it, they got to properly see the gorgeous ceiling made of the sea, with shadowed silhouettes of creatures large and small that drifted and darted. In the distance on the ground, a large lumbering form with spikes reminiscent of a Whispering Death made its way through foliage that the two quickly observed was just as fraught with danger as the sky: One of the bat-like creatures that pursued them was eaten by one of the large brightly colored plants that dotted the area.
They finally spotted Moana a short distance away running from the small bat-like swarm they had out-flown moments earlier, but the duo had to swerve around a geyser that shot straight up in front of them. They made their way around it and saw she was gone.
Hiccup and Toothless landed to get some proper cover from the active creatures that were everywhere. The dragon scented the air and led them on a short trek until the voices of their companions were nearby.
The two quietly argued over something, and after a brief pause, Hiccup heard Maui say,
"Except… Maybe as bait."
Hiccup switched from approaching to spying, pulled off his helmet to impair his hearing less, and he and Toothless creeped forward to eavesdrop easier on the conversation.
The plan the demigod came up with is to have Moana distract Tamatoa so Maui can grab the Hook. Hiccup's opinion of Maui plummeted as he listened to the demigod's meandering idea. Moana said she hadn't ever been outside "the reef" before, and he inferred from her wording that she didn't even seem to know anyone that had been beyond it. He remembered how she handled the Kakamora ship/s getting hostage of the chicken she successfully rescued, and decided that he would say Moana was capable, but Maui also didn't tell the girl, or Hiccup, anything regarding what Tamatoa is, any advice on his strength, how he fights, or any weaknesses.
Maui sneaked after a now dazzlingly dressed-up Moana, and the spying duo waited a few moments before they followed. They lingered in the doorway to scope out the place, and Hiccup took the moment to check the cartridges in his sword. They moved to the side to wait for Tamatoa to show himself, ready to retrieve Moana if things went sour.
Moana sarcastically executed her part of the plan near a huge pile of riches. She struck a small, makeshift drum with a bone that was shaped like a combination of a hammer and axe. "Wow." Bang. "A shiny, glittery cave!" Bang. "And just like me," Bang. "it is covered in sparkly treasure..." She hit three more beats in time with each bland delivery she gave next: "Sparkle. Sparkle. Sparkle."
Maui had retreated behind a rock and whisper-yelled as he leaned over it to encourage Moana's performance. "You're not sellin' it!"
Moana brought the items in her hands up to indicate the plan, and matched the volume he used. "This is stupid! I'm just gonna walk up and get it!" She pointed at the seemingly unguarded Hook.
"You go up there: he will kill. you. Just stick to the plan."
Bang. Bang. Bang.
"Oh! When he shows up, keep him distracted! Ehmm-Make him talk about himself! He loves bragging about how 'great' he is!"
Hiccup was not impressed with the timing, lack of more information, and the almost brush-off delivery of Maui's advice. The male southerner wasn't giving the teen very much to help her succeed.
"You two must get along swell!" Bang.
"No;" Maui shrugged, "not since I ripped off his leg."
Moana's next Bang stuttered as she processed what the demigod said. "You ripped off his le-- ...Maui?!"
At least now Hiccup finally knew there was a definite weakness to exploit. The cave began to rumble, and with the commotion as cover, Hiccup and Toothless raced to a different spot of coral and rock to be hidden better. The mound of treasure was lifted, and Hiccup tensed next to his night fury as Moana slipped from her sudden perch on the edge of the pile. The back of the two giant shells she had on top of her clothes was snatched by a huge, pinching claw, and she was brought in front of a crab the size of the krakens he remembered imagining from Gobber's wild tellings of the gods and their realms. He thought the demigod's 'bottom-feeder' insult was just a metaphor, and with this new information, he found that he couldn't decide whether that made Maui's insult clever or not.
The kraken sized crab chuckled. "Ooh hoo-hoo hoo-hoo hoo-hoo hoo.~ What have we here?"
Moana gasped.
"It's a sparkly… shiny… Wait a minute." Tamatoa tossed Moana into the air to rid the bait costume she wore, and caught her by her midsection. "Ugh! It's a human! What are you doing down here, in the Realm, of the Monst--
"...Just pick an eye, babe."
Moana had been switching her gaze between the crab's constantly shifting eyes while he had monologued, unsure where to direct her attention.
"I can't-- I can't concentrate on what I'm saying if you keep… Yeah, pick one, pick ONE!"
Frightened over the growing intensity of the request, Moana froze and settled on the crustacean's right eye.
Hiccup bit his cheek hard in order to not make any noises. This Tamatoa was immediately shaping up to be someone Hiccup would love to annoy until they ripped their hair out. ...Or rip off treasure...? ...Annoy to death.
Tamatoa brought the girl closer to inspect the necklace that concealed the Heart. "Well you're a funny-looking little thing, aren't you?"
Moana snatched the necklace to her chest, away from the tip of the claw that pulled it. "Don't! It's my grandma's!"
"'It's my grandma's!'" The kraken mocked her movements and facial expressions. He then yelled in Moana's face. "I ATE my grandma! And it took a week, 'cause she was, absolutely humongous. Why are you here?!"
Hiccup was broken from his observations by a grunt, presumably from Maui, on the other side of the cavern.
Tamatoa slowly started to turn to investigate the sound as well, and Moana quickly tried to catch his attention with panicked, reaching arms,
"'Cause you're AMAZING!!"
The crustacean's focus snapped back to look at the human in his hold, and he listened as she continued to talk and emphasize with hand gestures:
"And, we mortals have heard of the Tale of the Crab, who became a LEGEND! And I just, had to know, how you, became, so…"
Tamatoa leaned unnervingly closer.
"Crab...ulous? Heh..." she weakly finished, and folded her arms in front of her chest.
Tamatoa intimidatingly leaned in further. "Are you just trying to get me to talk about myself? Because if you are…" He straightened up eagerly. "I will gladly do so!"
Hiccup accidentally spoke his confusion out loud with Moana. "'Huh?'"
"In song form!" Tamatoa tossed a coin upwards into the water that pretended to be the sky, which rippled the surface and made the light in the cave glisten and streak across the walls and floor; along with the reflective treasure on the monster's shell.
Well, Tamatoa hasn't always been this glam-
I was a drab little crab once
Now I know I can be happy as a clam-
Because I'm beau-tiful, Bay-Beh
The song surprised them, but the Berkians quickly got over it and tried to stick to the main objective they were down here for. They let the crab sing as they watched for both Maui and/or an opening to grab the Hook themselves.
Did your granny say: "Listen to your- hea-rt?
"Be who you are- on the in-side-?"
I need three words to tear her argument a-part-:
"Your granny LIED!"
Moana was still helpless in the claws of their enemy, and after Tamatoa yelled that last line in the girl's face, he gleefully put more effort into pantomiming and dancing with his lyrics.
I'd rather be
Shiny~~
Like a treasure from a sunken pirate wreck-
Scrub the deck- and make- it look
Shiny~~
With the crustacean serving as his own distraction, Hiccup figured they could still salvage the original plan the Southerners had. "Toothless," he whispered, "I'll get Moana. You go for the Hook."
I will sparkle like a wealthy woman's neck
KKKCT
Just a sec!
Don't you know-ah?
The decapod drew his own attention to the fish above them, and the duo leapt onto the shell and immediately split directions.
Fish are dumb-, dumb-, dumb-
They chase anything that glitt-ers- (beginners)
Oh-
And here they come-, come-, come-
To the brightest thing that- glitt-ers-
Mmm! Fish dinners!
I just love free- food-
And you look like sea-foo-
Hiccup sprung his flaming sword toward the gaping mouth Moana was being lowered into and it landed, simultaneously burning and cutting into the crab's soft cheek.
"AUGH!"
The humans fell harshly to the ground. The monster began to retaliate, but he was interrupted.
"HEY! CRAB CAKE!"
Hiccup paid Maui no attention and dragged Moana away to hide near the wall. Toothless chose to crouch on the shell behind Maui; just out of Tamatoa's sight.
The crab's jaw dropped open, and he pulled his extremities close in remembrance of what the demigod did in the past.
Maui wrenched the Hook from its spot. "I'm back." He kissed the weapon and held it high in triumph. "Iiiit's Maui Time!"
Hiccup wasn't surprised when Maui put on a show of power instead of simply escaping immediately with the item. He watched the man confidently activate the shapeshifting power, but it was clear after a moment he had no control over it.
Tamatoa, with his attention still aimed at the rival on his back, stood fully upon seeing the lack of a threat Maui posed.
Well, well, well-
Little Maui's having trouble with his look
You little semi-, demi-, minigod-
The crab tilted his shell back and forth to throw Maui off-balance. The intensity and speed of the seesawing became more intense as the kraken's song picked up momentum again, and, unlike Maui who got bounced off, Toothless dismounted the unstable shell before he was thrown off.
Owuh-ch! What a terrible performance
Get the hook! (get it?)
You don't swing it like you used to, man-
With the powerful item they came for still held tight in Maui's grasp, Tamatoa snagged the magical Hook by the tip of his claw, and vertically twirled the weapon and attached demigod, fast, before he flung them and all the built up momentum into a wall.
Yet I have to give you credit for my- start-
And your tattoos on the out-side-
For just like you I made myself a work of art-
I'll never hide! I can't! I'm too
Shiny~~
As Maui was once more launched into the air, Toothless met Hiccup near the edge of the cave where the humans had huddled out of the way. Hiccup was reluctant to have Toothless assist the demigod with his trademark plasma blasts. The shots were very precise, but far too powerful to risk them destroying the crab's lair and getting trapped or crushed. He contemplated making his own ambush with Inferno's Zippleback gas feature, but Maui now laid in the center of the fight. Even though the demigod could probably handle it, Hiccup wanted to avoid friendly fire as much as he could.
Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough
Strut my stuff! My stuff is so-
Shiny~~
The singer confidently left Maui to deal with the observing humans, and though Toothless was able to juke Hiccup away, Moana got caught once more, and is immediately tossed into a topless cage nearby.
Send your armies but they'll NEVER be enough
My shell's too tough
Tamatoa opted to focus again on the one who Hiccup figured the crab still deemed the most powerful threat, since the monster wasn't concerned over anything the northerners did.
Mau-i- man-
You could try-, try-, try-
But you can't expect a demi-god-
To beat a deca-pod-! (look it up!)
As Maui kept the Hook close, even through all the tossing he was being subjected to, Tamatoa upped his efforts to rip the object from the large man. The collector viscously drug the demigod's body harshly against the ground, slammed a claw onto him, and finally manually scraped him off the Hook before he replaced it in its spot on the shell.
You will die-, die-, die-
Now it's time for me to take- a-part-
Your aching heart-
The crustacean struck the wall, and a second later the opening in the top of the cavern was closed. The area was briefly bathed in dark shadows before the plants in the area, parts of Tamatoa, and parts Toothless began to glow.
[Half Time Tempo Change]
Far- from- the- ones- who- a-ban-doned you-
Cha-sing- the- love- of- these- hu-mans-
Who- made- you- feel- wan-ted-
Hiccup was completely baffled by his other's new colors. They looked nothing like the fire his night fury used when proving his status as the Alpha. He whispered incredulously. "Toothless? What in Thor's name? How are-- No. Nevermind. Later." Hiccup shoved his confusion away as best he could to focus back on the struggle in front of him.
You tried- to be- tough-
But your amour's- just not hard- enough-
Ma-ui~~
Now it's time- to- kick- your-
High-neey~~
With the crab's attention solely on Maui again, Hiccup and Toothless shifted their efforts to help Moana the rest of the way over the top of cage.
Ever seen- some-one- so-
Shi~ney~~
Soak it in- 'cause it's the last- you'll ever see-
C'est la vie- mon a-mi-
I'm so-
Shi~ney~~
When Moana landed on the other side of the barrier, the three allies noticed the glowing algae could be spread onto things.
Now I'll eat- you, so prepare your final plea--
Just for me-
Moana sprang into action without a word. She snatched up a barnacle and slathered the bright algae all over it.
You'll never be- quite- as-
Shi~~ney~~
You wish you were- nice- and-
Shiiiii~~~~neeeeeeeehh~~~~~~
Maui was tossed into Tamatoa's mouth, but before he could be eaten whole, the man braced himself between the bottom feeder's teeth, and the two struggled to overpower the other.
Moana rushed past Hiccup and Toothless and yelled at the crab. "HEY! I got somethin' 'shiny' for ya!"
The monster spat Maui out. "The Heart...of Te Fiti. You can't run from me!"
Moana gasped and took off.
"Oh. You can. You keep surprising me!" The crab gave chase.
Hiccup and Toothless dodged out of the way, and the night fury blasted the complete set of legs to force Tamatoa to balance on the weaker side.
The blast also made Moana stumble and the fake Heart flew forward out of her grasp.
Tamatoa ricocheted himself off the wall and dove for the general ground the decoy landed in. He began eagerly digging; laughing and declaring his want and need for the power of Creation all the while.
With the Hook unguarded, Toothless quickly flit over the shell so Hiccup could grab it, and they met the southerners at the entrance to the crab's lair.
Moana, tucked under one of Maui's arms to help support him, reassured the demigod that the Heart was safe, and with both of the powerful items accounted for, the group made to leave.
"Wait a minute." Tamatoa's voice echoed from inside, and he scoffed. "I see. She's taken a barnacle...and she's covered it in bioluminescent algae... as a diversion! Agh!"
The dragon and rider spun around and shot the charging crustacean point blank, before they followed their companions towards a geyser.
The geyser launched the demigod and teen up to the ceiling made of suspended water, and Hiccup and Toothless raced to get to it before it stopped. They spotted Tamatoa getting flung onto his back from their attack before the two Berkians pierced the water above and up to what Hiccup hoped was the regular sky, sea, and land.
