Chapter 1 : The one where James crossed the line

It was mid-November and Lily was on her way to the Great Hall for breakfast. It was Thursday and as all Thursdays she was in a good mood. After all, what was not to like? Double potions, Care for Magical Creatures and to top it all up Charms.

"Are you both going home for Christmas?" Asked Marlene

" huh? …yeah, of course. Are you not?" Lily wondered

" Yeah, well… I am, just thought if you were not, I would keep you company." she blushed a little when she said it. " Not about to leave you here alone for Christmas, you know?"

Emmeline rolled her eyes at her and looked at Lily with a cheeky smile.

"So, it has nothing to do with Black staying over Christmas at Hogwarts?" Emmeline prodded

"What? Black? Why would I care about what Black does?" Marlene's face had shifted from light to pink to a deep read now.

Lily giggled slightly and then said with what she hoped was a serious tone. " Good. Cause I don't think he is staying here for Christmas. Sirius spends the holidays with Potter. I can't imagine why these ones would be any different."

"Keeping good track of me, don't you Evans?"

Lily turned. There, walking behind them was James Potter with a self-assured smirk on his face.

Arrogant. Petulant. Unbearable. Potter.

She rolled her eyes and without looking at him responded "Not you Potter. The universe doesn't spin around your oversized head. I do tend to keep track of my friends, though. Especially when they are so unfortunate as having to spend not only the whole year, but also their holidays with YOU."

" What you mean to say, is that there are people that can't get enough of me during the year and want nothing more than to spend the holidays with me too." He smiled a little "I am sorry that I can't provide you with that honour Evans, but you see, only those worthy of my company are invited" saying that Potter passed by Lily, not without giving her a small tug which made her drop her bag. "Ups, my bad Evans" he said with a smile and walked into the Great Hall.

"Narcissistic twat" murmured Lily bending to pick her bag. But before she could reach it Sirius handed it to her with a cheeky smile on his face.

"Is there ever going to be peace between you two, love?" He asked

"He is an arrogant idiot. It's difficult to have peace with someone like that" She said a little more aggressively than she had intended.

Sirius stopped and looked at her for a moment. Then, in a calm and sweet manner he said "It wasn't long ago you though the same of me. And now, look at us. Peas in a pod, lilies in a pond, eh?" He said with his characteristic smile and that mischievous sparkle in his eyes.

Lily looked him sternly, ignoring his smirky comment "yes, the difference is that you stopped attacking and making fun of people because you don't like them. You stopped being a retard. You grew up. He hasn't."

Sirius looked at her with a half-smile. "Really? Hmm…Love, I think that-"

"Drop it Sirius. I know he is your friend. I know you care for him. But you have to stop defending him"

With that being said, she took her bag from his hand and walked in the Great Hall.

Breakfast went on without much incident. She chatted on with Emm and Marl and her good mood was starting slowly to return.

"Post is here!" Emmeline chimed.

They all looked up and Lily smiled when she saw Weldon, her snowy owl flying down towards her.

"Hey there! What do you have for me?" she asked the owl while petting his head. Weldon put out his leg so she could untie the envelope.

"Excited someone remembered your existence Evans?" Potter sneered from further up the Gryffindor table.

"aaaand here we go again" whispered Emmeline.

"I think it's actually quite amusing to watch" giggled back Marlene.

"I've never seen someone so grateful for a letter in my life!" Potter continued shouting, causing more than one head form the tables to turn and look up "It must be the first time you get mail EVER!"

"Well at least I get letters, the only mail you receive are howlers from you parents and the newspaper" Lily called over. With that she stood up and walked out of the Great Hall to read her letter in peace.

She walked to one of the corridors adjacent to the Great Hall and stopped by the statue of a bold wizard to read.

She was surprised to see that the letter was from Petunia. Petunia never wrote.

Lily,

I am bringing home Vernon (my boyfriend) to meet our parents this Christmas.

I said to mum that I wanted you to stay at that school for the holidays. She didn't like the idea. It would be best if you make some excuse and don't come home. She may accept it if it comes from you.

If you must come home, though, make sure you don't display any of your freakishness in front of Vernon.

Petunia

Lily read the letter once. Then, with a slightly shaky hand started reading it again when…

" What Evans? Is it good news? Have your parents finally realised what a waste you are?" Potter's voice came from the end of the corridor. He was walking towards her with a smirk while chewing on a half-finished muffin.

Lily tore her eyes from the letter and looked at him. She opened her mouth to give a snappy retort but couldn't find any.

"I..I …" she started.

"what?" she looked at her " lost at words when it come to the ugly truth?" His mouth curled in an all-knowing half-smile.

Lily's chin shook. She could feel her eyes watering. Her hand, still holding Petunia's letter was shaking.

"N-n-no" she mumbled.

"Evans?" Potter asked, his smirk disappearing

"Why, why do you have to be so…so…c-c-cruel?" She managed to say, feeling the tears form in her eyes. Her teeth clattering because of her trembling chin and her jaw clenched.

Potter looked at her taken aback, he frowned and gave a step towards her extending his arm.

"What?" he said with a completely different tone. All mockery gone from his voice. "Evans, hey, I didn't –" he started saying. He gave a few more steps towards her with the intention to stop her, but Evans just turned and ran away.

"What happened?" he said quietly to himself. He gave a few more steps as to follow her but then thought better to leave her be. He didn't understand. He hadn't said anything out of order, had he? He was mocking her of course, pocking her as usual. They had been jabbing at each other for years. She was always quick to give him a witty retort and smirk at him. She had never reacted like this.

He stood there for a few seconds and finally came to the conclusion that Evans had just been messing with him. He had been much more ruthless to her before and she had never taken it to heart. This was just a ruse to make him feel guilty for sure.

He turned back and walked towards Potions, passing his hand through his hair and smiling nicely played Evans, nicely played.
