Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
Kane could smell the blood before Klaus even entered the room. His heart immediately clenched and his brain went into overdrive, hoping that his father didn't just create a permanent enemy out of the Salvatore brothers.
Klaus pushed through the classroom door.
"Well, the verdict's in. The original witch says the doppelgänger should be dead." Klaus said. Kane looked up at his father, his eyes conveying his fear that he was going to kill Elena.
Rebekah stood excitedly.
"Does that mean we can kill her?" She asked, and Kane stood up too, ready to jump in and stop his aunt.
"No, I'm fairly certain it means the opposite."
Kane let out a huge breath.
"What?!" Rebekah shouted disappointedly. Rebekah wrapped her arms around Caroline from behind, and pulled her back towards her.
"Call it a hunch..." Klaus said, and Kane immediately jumped forward to help Caroline.
He sent a look towards Rebekah, who let Caroline go but kept a tight grip on her arm. Klaus flashed a test tube full of blood to Tyler. Caroline went to launch forward, and Kane grabbed her other arm, sending her a warning look.
"Elena's blood. Drink it." Klaus said.
"No!" Caroline launched forward again, and Kane wrapped an arm around her. "No, no, no, Tyler, don't!"
"Stay still, don't move." Kane whispered in her ear. "It's okay."
"If he doesn't feed, he'll die anyway, love. Consider this an experiment. It's okay." Klaus said.
Tyler took the tube from Klaus and struggled to swallow it down.
"There we go. Good boy."
Tyler coughed, and rolled over on the desk. He fell onto the floor, screaming as what Kane assumed was the blood transitioning him into a hybrid.
"Tyler, no!" Caroline cried as Kane tightened his grip around her.
"It's okay, it's okay." Kane whispered to her. "This is a good thing." He told her, sniffing the air, noticing as Tyler's scent shifted from mangey dog to the scent of wood, the signature hybrid scent to help them blend in with their surroundings.
Klaus knelt in front of Tyler, watching his transition, or death, rather intently.
Tyler's eyes lit up yellow, fangs descended from his mouth, and vampire-type veins crawled from underneath his eyes.
Klaus smiled.
"Well, that's a good sign."
Klaus Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson's Father
Klaus and Rebekah stood in front of Mystic Falls Hospital, waiting for the nurse to finish gathering Elena's blood.
"So the doppelgänger isn't the problem. Her blood is the solution." Rebekah said.
"Seems so." Klaus said.
"How did you know?"
"Well, you know how much the original witch hated me. Do you honestly think I would do anything other than the opposite of what she says?"
"A thousand years in the grave and she's still screwing with you."
"Well, it makes sense if you think about it from her perspective. It was her fail-safe in case I ever broke the hybrid curse. The doppelgänger had to die in order for me to become a hybrid, but if she was dead..."
"Then you couldn't use her blood to sire yourself a new species." Rebekah said, piecing the puzzle together.
"Leaving me alone for all time."
"Is that what this is about? Your obsession with hybrids? You just don't want to be alone?" Rebekah asked.
"Makes sense, doesn't it?" Another voice asked, approaching the car Rebekah was sitting on top of and Klaus was leaning against. "Except for the part where he has a hybrid son who can sire a new hybrid species." Kane said.
Klaus looked up at his son, hoping he hadn't taken anything the wrong way, and found Kane's face to be absolutely unreadable.
Dread pooled like a rock in Klaus' stomach.
"What I want is to take you, my girl, and my hybrid the hell out of this one-pony town." Klaus said, turning around.
"You're skipping town again?" Kane asked, no emotion in his voice.
Klaus closed his eyes for one second. The conversation they'd had earlier had gone so well, only be right back at square one. Maybe even before square one, if it was Kane's humanity that was his problem right now.
Klaus turned around again, looking directly at Rebekah. "You know, why don't you, uh, why don't you get the truck? I'll get Elena."
She slid off the car, obviously annoyed, and walked right past Klaus toward the parking lot.
Almost instantly after she'd walked past him, Klaus caught the icy cold scent of a vampire, and the vintage leather that told him exactly who it was.
"Well, look who finally decided to show up to the party." Klaus said, turning to face Damon, his son's godfather.
"Where is she?" Damon asked, headed right for Klaus like a man on a mission.
"Elena? Ah, she's making a donation to a greater cause."
Damon moved to head toward the hospital, and Klaus stepped in his path.
"I'm afraid I can't let you interfere, mate." Klaus said.
"You'll have to kill me." Damon said, attempting to push past him again.
"Oh, I would love to kill you, but I made a pledge to your brother, and unlike him, I keep my word. Although, you know what, thinking about it now, he probably doesn't care that much anymore."
Klaus pushed Damon against the hood of a car.
"You might want to wait on that one." Kane said, watching the exchange like it hadn't bothered him at all.
Maybe deep down he knew Klaus would never kill Damon; the vampire who had raised and protected his son. Maybe he knew that Klaus was only trying to put some emotion back on his son's face or in his voice.
Klaus paused, looking up at his boy.
"Katherine's scent is all over him." Kane said, nodding towards Damon. "Something is going on."
"Don't you want to know about your friend Mikael?" Damon asked, Klaus' hand still wrapped around his throat.
Klaus went rigid.
"Damon, I swear…" Klaus started, his voice lowering as genuine fear started to fill up inside him. It was just one hit after another in this town, and the sooner him and Kane were out of it, the better off they'd be.
"He knows you're here." Damon said, his voice lowering in a warning, the same voice he used to talk to Klaus about Kane.
"You're bluffing." Klaus said.
"Katherine found him."
Klaus looked up at Kane, whose face had finally altered, looking at his father like he was reading every thought flowing through Klaus' mind.
Klaus let go of Damon and disappeared with Kane in less than a second.
Damon Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Godfather
Damon handed Elena a glass of bourbon in the parlor of the Salvatore house while she sat on the couch.
"Hey, have some bourbon. It'll help you forget." Damon said.
Elena took the glass and took a sip, groaning a bit at the taste of it.
"Yeah, it's strong." Damon whispered to her. "You know I can help you forget, too. At least the memories you don't want to keep." He said.
"No. No compulsion. I need to remember. All of it."
Damon gave a slight nod, like he understood her point, and then held up her necklace.
"I stole it back for you."
Elena looked at the necklace, and then looked at Damon, and he watched the heartbreak wash over her gaze.
"He's really gone this time. I watched it happen. After everything that we went through to get...to help him. Now he's just...gone."
Damon put the necklace down on the table beside them, preparing for the breakdown he knew was coming.
Tears erupted in Elena's eyes.
"Where were you, Damon?" She asked, her voice breaking.
"I shouldn't have left." He said, hurting because she was hurting. He reached out, putting his hand on her leg and squeezing it lightly. "I promise you...I will never leave you again."
Elena met his eyes and gave him a small smile.
"Well, isn't this cozy?"
Damon shot to his feet as Elena turned to see Stefan, standing against a pillar at the entrance to the parlor.
"What are you doing here, brother?" Damon asked, obviously angry.
Stefan moved off the pillar and into the room, pouring himself a drink.
"Last I checked, I live here." Stefan said, lifting his glass. "Klaus is gone, but he's asked me to keep watch on you until he returns. From now on, you're under my protection."
Stefan looked from Elena to Damon, and then lifted his glass to Damon and took a drink.
"Mmm, by all means. Carry on." Stefan said, leaving the room, and Damon turned to look at Elena before pulling out his phone.
Katherine Pierce
"How do you know that Anna wasn't tricking you?" Katherine asked Jermey, Elena Gilbert's younger brother.
"This is the place." Jermey said, certain. "It's the oldest wing of the largest cemetery in Charlotte. She said that a witch entombed him here in the nineties."
The two of them peered through the window of the door. Inside laid a tomb, which was eerie enough even if it didn't contain the only creature in the world that could kill Klaus Mikaelson and his family.
"Look there." Jermey said, gesturing for Katherine. She broke open the double set of doors. Slowly, she approached the tomb. She stared at it for a minute, and then pushed the top slab of the tomb off. Mikael laid in it, desiccated and chained up to an unmovable degree. Jeremy and Katherine just looked at him for a moment, and then his eyes opened.
Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
In the dead of night, Klaus' phone rang as he and Kane made their way through the woods.
Stefan's name lit up on the caller ID, and Klaus answered it without a second thought.
"Portland is fantastic. Once you get over all the whiny music and healthy looking people, it is literally a breeding ground for werewolves." He told Stefan.
"Your father is dead." Stefan said shortly.
Klaus stopped in his tracks, and whirled around to look at Kane.
"What did you say to me?"
"Oh, my mistake. Not your actual father and not dead. Mikael. Daggered. What do you want me to do with the body?" Stefan went on.
Kane's internal moral values spun as rage filled every fiber of his being at Stefan's attitude.
Clearly it bothered Klaus too, whose jaw clenched.
"Well, first I want you to explain to me exactly what happened."
Stefan Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Uncle
*One Hour Earlier*
"Alright, let's say that Mikael followed Elena in here. He tried to grab her, so he could use her as bait." Stefan said as he lead the group into the living room of the mansion.
"And you what? Vervained him?" Elena asked Stefan.
"No, we vervained him." Damon said, gesturing between himself and Stefan. "This guy's an Original. Gotta make it realistic."
"Okay, fine. We vervained him, and in the process discovered that he had a dagger." Stefan went on.
"Which he planned to use on Rebekah, but instead..." Elena drifted off.
"We drove it through his heart." Stefan said softly. A look passed around the group, coordinating their plan to lure Klaus to his death.
"And what happens when he asks to see Mikael's body?" Elena asked Stefan.
"Good point. You, my brother, have been compelled to do what Klaus says. So the idea is to lure him back here and kill him...last thing we need is you getting tripped up and tongue-tied."
"Well, don't look at me. I'm just in charge of getting him back here." Stefan said sarcastically.
"Klaus is smart. If we tell him that Mikael is dead, he'll want proof."
"Then I shall be dead." Mikael said from the doorway of the living room, where he entered holding something wrapped in parchment and a small vial. Elena approached from around the railing in the parlor that separated it from the library, and Stefan followed.
"What if he wants to see you in person?" She asked, looking to see what Mikael had in his hands.
"Well that means our plan is working." He said. "Klaus will absolutely want to see my body. You lure him here, and I will kill him."
"With what?" Stefan asked, arrogance oozing from him. "Those daggers won't work on him. And what about Klaus' little lap dog?"
"No." Damon said from behind the railing. "Kane stays out of this." Realizing that probably sounded suspicious to Mikael, Damon switched gears. "You're right, Elena, Klaus is smart. He probably won't bring Kane anywhere near this city before he knows Mikael is absolutely, without a doubt, dead."
"Foolish to believe he cares about anyone that much." Mikael said to Damon, before turning to face Stefan and answer the question he'd originally asked. "I'm in possession of a stake fashioned from the wood of the ancient white oak tree. The one that left these ashes when it burned." He held up the small vial to show them the ashes.
"Where is it?" Damon asked.
Mikael unfolded the parchment and revealed a small black dagger. He uncorked the bottle of ashes and dipped the tip of the blade into the ashes.
"Not here. The knowing of its location is my insurance policy." He said.
"Against what?" Stefan asked, still cold and arrogant.
Mikael gave him a small, cold smile, and then handed the dagger hilt-first to Elena.
"You leaving this in my heart. You see, a vampire can't dagger an original without dying. So..." Mikael moved his eyes from Stefan's to Elena's. "It falls to you."
"Y...You want me to actually dagger you?" She asked.
"Klaus will leave nothing to chance - especially when it comes to trust."
Elena hesitantly took the dagger from Mikael's hands.
Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
*One Hour Later*
Klaus paced angrily in front of Kane.
"I wanna see him. I want to see his rotting body for myself." Klaus growled.
"Well, he's here. Come by whenever."
"If you are lying to me Stefan, your compulsion will expose you. So, answer with your life: Is what you are saying the truth?"
Kane watched skeptically, listening as intently as possible to the phone call, trying to pick up any detail that might expose an ulterior motive.
"It's true. I saw it with my own eyes." Stefan said.
"I wanna talk to Rebekah." Klaus said immediately.
"Well, that's not a problem. She's right here."
A second went by in which Kane could hear Stefan's very footsteps across the phone line, and then the passing of the phone to another person.
"Hello Nik." Came Kane's Aunt Rebekah's voice.
Kane's chest tightened another notch.
"Rebekah, love. What's this I hear about Mikael's tragic run in with the dagger?"
"It's true. He's finally out of our lives for good."
Klaus closed his eyes and took a deep breath, as if believing her.
"I miss you. I'm miserable here." She said.
"I'll be home soon." Klaus assured her.
"Good. I'll see you then, brother." Rebekah said, and then the phone line went dead.
Klaus looked up at Kane, confirming that he had, in fact, heard everything.
But at the look on Kane's face, Klaus stopped short, and the stress lines that had just faded only a second ago, returned.
"What is it?" Klaus asked him.
"There's two other heartbeats on the other end of the phone." Kane said gently. "I think this is a trap." Klaus gave him a small smile, and approached his son, putting both hands on Kane's shoulders.
"I will be careful." He said.
"Dad," Kane started to protest. The small smile had disappeared from Klaus' face as he looked at Kane very seriously.
"Kane, I am not foolish enough to underestimate your instincts." He started. "But if there is even a chance of removing Mikael from our lives..." He moved his hands to either side of Kane's face. "Of keeping you safe, once and for all, I will take it. Even if it's a trap."
"I'm coming with you." Kane said.
Klaus nodded, though the look in his eyes told Kane differently.
"I would expect nothing less." Klaus said.
Stefan Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Uncle
"He bought it. He's coming home." Rebekah told them before turning to leave.
"Now - was that easy or what?" Damon said, sliding up next to Elena.
"One thing, first," Stefan said. "What are we going to do about Kane?" He raised an eyebrow at the two.
"As far as you know, brother," Damon said to Stefan. "Kane left Mystic Falls, and he won't be coming back."
"Let's just get this over with." Elena said, and pulled the dagger out of Mikael's chest.
Damon Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Godfather
"We can't trust Rebekah not to turn on us." Elena said as her and Damon prepared weapons in Damon's room.
"Oh really?" He asked sarcastically. "Cause these Original vampires are usually so reliable."
"Bonnie was right. Rebekah may be mad at Klaus now but - he is her brother."
"Her lying, mama-killing, dagger-happy brother. Wolfsbane is ready."
"He is her nephew's father." Elena said. "And if the ritual was any indication, Kane can flip his family's perspective like a switch." She took a deep breath. "There are too many things that can go wrong with this plan. Too many people that can make it go wrong."
"Well, I am formulating a secret contingency plan." Damon said, and Elena turned to him seriously.
"Really? What is it?"
"Well, if I told you, then it wouldn't be a secret." Damon said like it was obvious, and tilted his head upward, just in time for Stefan to enter the room.
"I need to borrow a tie."
"You have your own ties." Damon said, just like any typical older brother would.
"I'm a 162 years old and I'm going to a Homecoming Dance. I need better ties." Stefan complained.
"You could not go." Elena suggested, not in the nicest way possible.
"I'm compelled to protect you. And if I look at your track record at high school dances - it's pretty tragic. With my luck you'll go and get yourself murdered by the Homecoming Queen." Stefan said, and then hit the door on his way out. Elena rolled her eyes and then turned back to what Damon was doing. She picked up a wolfsbane grenade, and Damon almost instantly gave her hand a small smack.
"Ah- ah! Nope."
"I know how to do it! Alaric taught me!" She protested.
Damon took the grenade from her.
"Elena, if this thing blows up in our face- just remember: only one of us heals quickly."
Stefan came back into the room, holding two ties from Damon's collection, and approached the bathroom, where Damon and Elena were preparing the grenades.
"Ah, please tell me that you have a better plan than wolfsbane grenades?"
"Never your mind, brother. The less you know the better." Damon said.
"My freedom from Klaus rests entirely upon you two executing your plan perfectly. So, excuse me if I'm a bit cynical." Stefan said, holding each of the two ties up to his neck to see which one he liked better.
"You're the one that we should be worried about. If Klaus asks you one wrong question - whole thing falls apart."
"You do have reason to worry, but if I look back in our history of epic plan failures, it's usually because one of us let our humanity get in the way. Upon taking odds on how this thing goes down, it's certainly not gonna be me who screws it up." He paused for a moment, and then raised his eyebrows. "I'll see you at Homecoming. I can't wait."
And without another word, he left the room.
Elena shook her head, annoyed.
"Well, he's right there." Another voice said from inside Damon's bedroom. "It certainly is not going to be him."
Damon shot ramrod straight and turned to see none other than Klaus' son, sitting on the edge of his bed.
His face was stone-cold, and nothing but icy fury filled his eyes.
He stood, and approached the bathroom, not coming too close with the overpowering scent of wolfsbane.
"What in the bloody hell are you doing?" Kane asked Damon, refusing to even look at Elena.
"What are you doing? You weren't supposed to come back here!" Damon whisper-yelled at him.
"Did you think I was going to leave my father to face his worst enemy alone?" Kane growled right back, sky blue eyes lighting up bright electric blue, the color of his wolf eyes.
Damon glanced at Elena, and then moved out of the bathroom, guiding Kane away from the wolfsbane.
"I warned you about this so you would know to stay away."
"I didn't think that meant you were going to lure my father back to kill him."
"Kane," Damon closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Mikael is here. Please, get out of Mystic Falls. I won't let you get caught up in this."
"I won't leave without my dad, Damon. You know me better than that."
Damon looked at Kane sadly, and Stefan snapped his neck from behind.
Kane dropped like a rock in water, the neon color of his eyes fading right back to their typical sky blue color.
Damon let out a deep breath.
"What are you going to do with him?" Elena asked.
"Keep him protected and contained." Damon answered. "Until this is over."
Rebekah Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson's Aunt
Rebekah stood in the mirror of Stefan's room, observing herself in an elegant red dress.
"Getting a head start, huh?" Elena asked, entering the room. Rebekah turned, looking at Elena. There was less hatred in her eyes than there had been any other time the two had spoken.
"Embarrassing truth? This is my first high school dance." Rebekah said, and then turned back to the mirror.
"Ever?" Elena asked.
"I never really had time for high school before. Nik and I, and eventually Kane, we were always moving around, running. Anyway - I didn't want to leave anything to chance."
Without looking at Elena directly, Rebekah considered a thought.
"Kane won't leave his father, you know." She told Elena. "I know Damon seems to think that Nik won't bring Kane back to this town, but my nephew has a steadfast mind of his own. He's likely to come directly here and confront the Salvatores himself."
Elena looked at Rebekah, hiding all emotions of guilt and shame from her face.
"Damon cares deeply about him." Elena said. "He won't let anything happen to Kane. And, from what I've seen, Kane might just be the only person Klaus cares about protecting."
Rebekah smiled lightly.
"Have you heard anymore from him?"
"No." Elena said with a sigh. "But I'm sure that when he does return he'll do it with flair."
"And Damon and my father are all set with their plan?" Rebekah asked. Elena paused for a moment, and then confidently replied.
"Yes."
Rebekah turned around to face Elena, eyes glassy.
"Don't tell me. I don't want to know, I just- I want to go to the dance and leave the rest to Mikael."
"I know it's really hard. So thank you for helping us get Klaus back into town." Elena said seriously.
"Just be careful. I've been running for a thousand years for a reason. Mikael is not a good person and he definitely can't be trusted." A moment passed, and then she muttered: "No one in my family can."
Elena approached Rebekah further, seeing the tears in her eyes.
"Are you okay?"
"I've spent my whole life loving and hating my brother with equal measure. I never thought that I'd be the one to help drive a stake through his heart. That I would be the one to help take Kane's father from him...No tears - I don't want to ruin my makeup."
Rebekah turned away from Elena, looking back in the mirror.
"How do I look?" Rebekah asked Elena, trying to brush off the serious conversation.
"You look amazing." Elena said truthfully. "But you're missing one thing."
Elena reached into her pocket and pulled out the necklace that rightfully belonged to Rebekah and her family.
"My mother's necklace." Rebekah whispered.
"You should wear it tonight. May I?" Elena asked, gesturing for permission to put it on Rebekah. She smiled, and nodded at Elena, who put the necklace around her neck.
"Thank you." Rebekah said, sniffling through the tears.
Elena smiled, and then drove the black dagger through Rebekah's back, into her heart.
"I'm so sorry." She said as the desiccated veins creeped up Rebekah's neck. "I can't leave anything to chance either."
Damon Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Godfather
Elena sat on Stefan's bed as Damon covered Rebekah's body with a blanket.
"In the back! Harsh!" Damon said with a cringe.
"It had to be done. Rebekah was never gonna be completely on our side." Elena said, sounding like she was trying to convince herself more than Damon.
"Hey, I'm not judging you. It's very...'Katherine' of you." He said.
She looked at him incredulously.
"Not the way to make me feel better about myself, Damon."
"It was a compliment. Sort of..." He shrugged.
"Stefan's right. Someone's gonna let their humanity get in the way and screw this whole thing up. It's probably gonna be me."
"Elena, you just daggered somebody. You will be fine."
"Yeah, but I feel bad about it. I care too much, that's the problem, Damon. I'm the weak link."
"If it makes you feel any better, she's not really dead."
Elena looked at Rebekah's body, reflecting on the conversation they'd had just before Elena had betrayed their biggest ally.
"Do you trust him? Mikael?" Elena asked.
"No." Damon said immediately.
"What about Stefan?"
"No. Not as long as he is under Klaus's control."
"Then we need a better plan." Elena said, starting to get panicky.
"I know what to do. Your just not gonna like it." Damon said honestly.
"Why not?"
"Because when this all goes down, I don't want you having any part of it."
"What does that mean?" She asked, frustrated with the alarming number of things that could screw up their entire plan.
"Do you trust me?" Damon asked her, for more reasons than just to discuss a plan.
"Yes." Elena said instantly, and Damon gave her a small, arrogant smile.
"Then you have nothing to worry about."
Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
Kane could hear the conversations happening upstairs from where he was locked in the dungeons of the Salvatore house.
"So, does that mean I don't have to go?" Kane heard Elena ask from upstairs. He wasn't sure who she was talking to at first, until he heard Caroline's voice from the other end of a phone.
"You wish! No, Tyler is moving the party to his house."
Immediately, Kane knew exactly what was happening. Klaus and him had planned this right before arriving in Mystic Falls. It was supposed to be Kane's job to flood the gym.
"Kegs and beer pong for Homecoming? That's...different..."
"Just say you're still coming?!" Caroline asked desperately.
A knock came from the front door.
"I'll see you there." Elena said.
Kane could hear the front door of the mansion open.
"Elena..." A male voice greeted, one that sounded suspiciously like the busboy from the Grill that his Aunt Rebekah fancied.
"Matt...Hey." Elena replied.
"Hey."
"Umm - slight problem with your Homecoming date."
Putting two and two together, Kane realized that Rebekah was probably here, in this house somewhere, subdued.
"What happened?" Matt asked.
"How would you feel about a backup date?" Elena asked him.
Kane listened around to the other rooms in the house, looking for heartbeats or scents he didn't recognize.
He knew Elena's, could smell her even from the basement behind a door covered in vervain. Stefan wasn't at the house, he'd heard him leave not long before. Damon, as far as Kane was aware, was still here, though he couldn't catch his scent through the vervain.
So that left Matt, and two other additional heartbeats, one of which he assumed was Mikael, and one that was uncomfortably familiar.
Kane lifted his chin, though he knew it would be near impossible to catch anyone's scent in this huge house from the bottom floor, not to mention through the overpowering scent of vervain.
But as the realization hit Kane like a truck, he didn't need the scent.
He knew exactly who the fifth heartbeat was.
He smiled inside the cell, despite being trapped and useless to help his father.
Klaus Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson Father
"Quite the Homecoming." Stefan said to Klaus as they walked together through the yard of the Lockwood property.
"I've been planning my father's funeral for a thousand years. Granted, in no version of it were any of these people invited, but you get the idea." Klaus shrugged.
"So, what now? Stop running?" Stefan asked curiously.
"Hm- now I reunite my family."
"Your family. You mean the people you cart around in caskets?"
"None of that matters anymore. Mikael is gone. Bygones will be bygones. Especially once there's a child thrown into the mix. Speaking of which," Klaus paused, seeing the Homecoming Queen walk by. "Seems the Homecoming Queen still walks among the living, which leads me to believe Rebekah isn't here…where is she?"
"I have no idea. I thought she was coming with Matt." Stefan said honestly.
"Oh, be honest now, Stefan. Where is my sister?" Using the compulsion to force the truth out of him.
"I said I have no idea. How would you like me to take you to your father?"
Klaus raised an eyebrow.
"One more question." Klaus said, and Stefan raised an eyebrow. "My son. Do you know his current whereabouts?"
Stefan almost released a breath of relief. They'd prepared for this, depending on how Klaus phrased his question.
"I do not." Stefan said honestly. Damon had not told Stefan where he'd hid Kane, nor had Stefan been allowed to follow him to the location.
"Okay. Well, it wouldn't be a party without the guest of honor, would it? Bring Mikael to me."
"All right. Perhaps there's something in it for me...? My freedom from your compulsion?"
"Oh, you want your freedom. Well, once he is dead and his weapon destroyed, you'll have your freedom. It'll be my pleasure to give it back." Klaus said.
Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
Kane heard Mikael's footsteps cross the floor to where the pouring of some type of liquid, which Kane assumed was whiskey, came from.
"Did my daughter go to the dance?" Mikael asked.
"Yep, you missed the photo op. Did you get the stake?" Damon's voice came from upstairs.
"I did."
"I'm not gonna take your word for it. No offense to your honor and all..."
"None taken." Mikael said. Kane heard the shuffling of his jacket, which the hybrid assumed was Mikael showing Damon the white oak stake he planned to use to kill Klaus.
"Fancy. May I?" Damon asked, reaching out for it.
"It's the only weapon on this earth that can kill an Original. So I think I'll hold on to it. No offense." Mikael's jacket shuffled again, probably him putting the stake away.
"I'd offer you a drink-" Damon started, "But Katherine tells me you're more of a 'vampire on the rocks' kind of guy."
"Well, technically you could still offer."
"Why feed on vampires? Don't tell me it's for the smooth after taste."
"I had a hand in creating vampires, but bloodlust was never my intention. Over the centuries I learned to feed from the predator, not the innocent." Mikael explained, and Kane just about rolled his eyes.
The door to the mansion opened.
"Change of plans." Kane identified as Stefan's voice. "Klaus is back. He is at the Lockwood's and he wants your body delivered to his doorstep."
Kane guessed that part was directed at Mikael.
"I'm afraid he is in for a colossal disappointment." Mikael said.
"Well, he's certainly not gonna come here. I hope your plan didn't depend on that?" Stefan said sarcastically.
"Didn't depend on that." Damon assured him, just a shred of cockiness in his voice.
"But you do have a plan, right?" Stefan asked.
"Oh, yeah. We have a plan, right. Just doesn't involve you."
Kane heard Mikael's vampire yelled and the sinking of his teeth into Stefan's neck.
A few seconds went by of Mikael feeding on Stefan before Stefan's body hit the floor with a thud, and made no move to get back up.
"You couldn't just break his neck?" Damon asked, and Kane could almost hear the eye roll.
"Well that certainly occurred to me." Mikael admitted.
Kane heard the two sets of footsteps retreat in two separate directions, and then the door of the mansion opened and closed, presumably from Damon leaving.
It wasn't long after that that the house went completely and utterly quiet.
Kane could hear the singular heartbeat of who he assumed was Mikael, but other than that, no one was in the house.
Kane was positive that Mikael at least knew of Kane's existence - knew that Klaus had a son, knew Kane was alive, but if knew of Kane's current whereabouts? He had no idea.
Over the last hundred and fifty years, Kane had ran into Mikael all of one time, in New Orleans, 1919. That one interaction with his non-biological grandfather had been enough, and it had ruined everything that Kane had ever come to love about New Orleans.
He hadn't been back to this day, almost a hundred years later.
Kane wasn't sure whether being quiet was the right move, or if it would hurt him at all to try and break from this cell and defend his father.
Kane sighed, and realized too late, when Mikael's footsteps stopped upstairs, that Mikael could probably hear him this entire time.
The footsteps moved again, undoubtedly coming closer to Kane than they had been before.
He was only slightly worried, this time around. If Mikael decided to stake him right here, right now, and end Kane's life, the white oak stake would burn up inside his own body, and Mikael would have no means to kill Klaus.
The door to the dungeon opened, and Kane got to his feet, sensing the impending fight.
He heard Mikael down every single stair, and as he turned left, stopping square in front of Kane's cell and looking Kane dead in the eyes.
Mikael looked shocked for barely a second, just enough for Kane to see it before he hid it behind an arrogant smile.
"They've caged the beast." Mikael spat. "You know, I've heard a lot about you over the past century."
"Oh, have you?" Kane asked, full of sarcasm.
"Whispers and tales of the mighty miracle child of Niklaus Mikaelson. The abomination offspring of my abomination son."
Kane pursed his lips, as if considering that.
"Has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you say?"
Mikael nearly chuckled.
"I've been looking for you for a rather long time, I'm afraid. How unfortunate it is that once I do, you're not the intended target."
Kane's arrogance was replaced with anger in half a second.
"You'd kill me because of my father?"
"I'd kill you to hurt your father." Mikael spat.
"Why? Because your wife decided two kids with you wasn't enough? She had to go get herself knocked up by someone else?" Kane growled.
Rage filled Mikael's face and he kicked open the door of Kane's cell.
Kane stood his ground, ignoring the tremble that ran through his joints.
"That wasn't his fault, and yet you've made his life miserable, hunted him down every day of every year since learning that fact. You never liked him anyways, what did it matter to you who his father was? What's it matter to you who mine is?"
Mikael approached Kane, undoubtedly breaching Kane's personal space.
"The closest I ever came to killing your father was his favorite horse." Mikael said. "Imagine if I got his boy." He spat the word "boy" at Kane as if it was some kind of disease.
Kane gauged the distance between the two, and stepped farther toward Mikael.
Kane felt the tip of the white oak stake at his gut, and grabbed Mikael's hand, moving it directly over his heart.
"Imagine." Kane agreed.
The two stared off for a long time, before Mikael pulled the stake back and stuffed it into his jacket.
"It's ironic." Mikael said, almost gently if that were possible for the man in front of him. "You look just as he did when he was a boy. And yet, how very different the two of you act." Mikael took a step away from Kane. "You remind me much of myself."
Kane raised an eyebrow, completely disagreeing.
"There's been a change in plans tonight." Mikael declared, as if Kane had any idea what the plan was in the first place. "You are without a doubt worth more to Klaus than Elena."
"I wouldn't be so sure of that." Kane said, and Mikael grabbed him by the shoulder of his shirt, dragging him along.
"You are to be the bait tonight."
"Oh, brilliant." Kane muttered.
Klaus Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson's Father
"You have a visitor." Klaus' most recent hybrid, Mindy, said to him as he took aim for a beer-pong shot.
"Well, tell my visitor I'm on the brink of victory here." Klaus replied.
"He said his name is Mikael." Mindy explained further.
A disappointed expression, immediately followed by worry filled Klaus to the brim.
He hadn't heard from Kane since getting back to this one-stoplight town, and the most obvious explanation was now waiting for an audience with him.
Klaus threw the ping-pong ball, which landed perfectly into the cup.
"Then we mustn't keep him waiting. Move everyone out back. I'm gonna have a little chat with my dad. Tony, you know what to do."
Klaus walked toward the front door as the hybrids and guests began moving to the back lawn.
Mikael stood on the other side of the doorway, unable to come in without being invited.
"Hello, Niklaus." Mikael greeted.
"Hello, Mikael. Why don't you come in? Oh, that's right. I forgot you can't." He said sarcastically.
"Or you can come outside if you want."
"Or I could watch my hybrids tear you limb from limb." Klaus said, gesturing to the front lawn as a group of hybrids gathered behind Mikael.
"They can't kill me." Mikael said.
"True. But it'll make a hell of a party game. All I have to do is rub these two fingers together and they'll pounce." Klaus said, holding up his right hand.
"The big bad wolf. You haven't changed. Still hiding behind your playthings like a coward. You only forget. They may be sired by you, but they're still part vampire. And they can be compelled by me."
Mindy emerged from Mikael's left, shoving Kane into Mikael's grip, and the two of them each grabbed one of Kane's wrists, forced them behind his own head, and then pushed Klaus' son to his knees before his father.
Klaus could instantly smell the wolfsbane and vervain all over him, and nearly flinched, but held back, refusing to give Mikael the satisfaction.
Panic set into his stomach, seeing Kane barely able to keep his eyes open.
"Come out and face me, Niklaus. Or he dies."
A long pause passed between Mikael and Klaus, in which Klaus only dared to look down at Kane once.
"Go ahead. Kill him." Klaus said finally.
Kane's eyes snapped open at that, wide and wild, searching for his father's face as if he couldn't quite tell where he was.
"Dad," Kane said, as if trying to locate where exactly Klaus was, and determine how serious he was.
"Kane." Klaus said.
Please trust me.
"If he dies, it will be the end of your family." Mikael said.
"I don't need them. I just need to be rid of you."
I'm so sorry, Kane.
Tears were coming to Klaus' eyes regardless of how hard he tried to hold them. For a hundred and fifty years, Klaus had done whatever he could to protect and hide his son from Mikael, and here he was, hands literally on Kane while Klaus stood on the other side of a door and did nothing to help him.
"To what end, Niklaus? So you can live forever, with no one at your side? Nobody cares about you any more, boy! What do you have other than those whose loyalty you forced? No one. No one."
Rage lit up inside Niklaus.
"I'm calling your bluff, father." He said. "Kill him."
"Come outside and face me, you little coward. And I won't have to."
Tears dripped from Klaus' eyes.
Kane's eyes were wide, searching Klaus' eyes for some indication of what he was supposed to do, what Klaus was planning, or if he truly meant what he was saying.
"My whole life you've underestimated me. If you kill him you lose your leverage. So go ahead. Go on. Kill him. Come on, old man. Kill him. Kill him!!!"
Mikael chuckled.
"Your impulse, Niklaus. It has and will forever be the one thing that keeps you from truly being great."
Mikael pulled the white oak stake from his pocket and imbedded it in Kane's chest, just below his heart.
Kane let loose the most agonizing scream Klaus had ever heard.
He sucked in a breath of surprise, and then Mindy and Mikael released Kane, tossing him to the side.
Klaus gasped, icy pain filling him as Kane's eyes closed, his hands wrapped tightly around the stake deep in his chest.
Damon rushed up behind Klaus, twisted him around by the shoulder and stabbed him in the stomach with a decorated wooden stake.
Klaus let loose a pained yell.
On the front porch, Katherine stood behind Mikael with two wolfsbane grenades.
"Katherine." Mikael said angrily.
"Kaboom." She said, smiling at him, and then tossing the grenades at the Hybrids.
Damon flipped Klaus over his back, onto the floor, where he pulled the wooden stake from Klaus' stomach and took aim for his heart, all while Mikael watched the whole thing intently.
Stefan launched himself at Damon, the stake dropping out of his hands.
Klaus wasted no time, getting his feet under him, rushing to Kane, pulling the stake from his chest and launching himself at Mikael, imbedding the stake deep into Mikael's chest at the bottom of the stairs, all in one quick, swift movement.
"What are you doing?!" Damon yelled at Stefan.
Klaus stood up from Mikael, who released a tortured scream, and flames erupted from the stake, licking all the way up Mikael's body until he was no more then a burnt corpse at Klaus' feet.
Klaus wiped the tears off his face and turned back to his son, who was still curled up on the ground.
Klaus dropped to his knees next to his son, pulling Kane's upper body into his lap and holding him.
Kane's eyes were still closed, but he would be waking up shortly, Klaus was sure.
"What the hell did you do?" Damon asked Stefan, still inside the house.
"He's earned his freedom." Klaus said from where he was knelt at the door.
Stefan turned and took a few steps toward Klaus.
"Thank you my friend. You no longer have to do as I say. You're free." He said, de-compelling Stefan, who turned to look at his brother, and found him to no longer be there.
Kane Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson
When Kane finally came to, Klaus had moved the two of them to a couch in the Lockwood mansion.
He was sitting on one end of the couch, with Kane's head and shoulder's resting on a pillow in Klaus' lap.
Klaus was reading some kind of book or journal that was resting on Kane's chest.
Kane wrinkled his nose.
"Smells like wet dog in here." Kane said, slowly opening his eyes, blinking furiously to get past the light searing into his brain.
Klaus laughed lightly, carding his right hand through Kane's hair.
"Then we'll leave as soon as you'd like."
Kane sucked in a deep breath, feeling the ache where the white oak stake had stabbed him. White oak didn't heal quite as fast as a regular injury, so although the wound was probably closed, the muscles and bones it had penetrated through still hurt.
"I'm guessing this means you didn't actually want him to kill me." Kane said.
Klaus literally flinched.
He took a deep breath, and looked Kane in the eyes, closing the book he was reading.
"I'm so sorry, Kane. I'm so sorry you got dragged into this at all. You were right about it being a trap, and I should've believed you, I should've kept a better eye on you."
Kane waved him off.
"Just, next time when I say 'It's a trap', don't run into it, okay?"
Klaus chuckled.
"Got it."
Kane sat up, his chest protesting, but he was ready to get the hell out of this house, out of this town.
Damon Salvatore - Baby Mikaelson's Godfather
Damon and Elena were in the living room of the Salvatore house, talking with one another, pacing the length of the floor.
"How did this happen?" Elena asked, as if she really couldn't figure out where it had all gone wrong.
"We thought of everything, Elena! Klaus having hybrids. Kane showing up. Mikael turning on us. We brought in Katherine so you weren't in danger. Anything that could have gone wrong we were prepared!"
He took a shot of whiskey.
"I don't understand. Stefan wanted Klaus dead. More than anything. That's what we were counting on." She said.
"We blew it." Damon muttered.
"Where's Katherine?"
"She ran for the hills like usual, the minute things got bad! And who blames her?! Klaus would've crushed her. I had him, Elena. I had Klaus! This could have all been over!!!" He yelled, throwing a bottle of scotch into the fireplace, which roared.
"Hey. Damon...Hey! Hey, listen to me!" Elena yelled at him, grabbing his face.
"We'll survive this. We always survive. Trust me."
Damon frowned deeper.
"We're never getting Stefan back. You know that, don't you?" Damon said.
"Then we'll let him go. Okay? We'll have to let him go."
Damon nodded. Inside his pocket, his phone started to ring, interrupting the moment Damon and Elena were on the verge of having.
Damon answered the phone.
"Not interested in the play-by-play of our failure right now, Katherine." He said.
"I'm just calling to say goodbye. I don't know what to tell you. You had a good plan Damon. And that's high praise coming from me." Katherine said from the other end of the phone.
"That's not very comforting at the moment. You're going back into hiding?"
"At least my life is not boring. Goodbye, Damon."
"Take care of yourself, Katherine."
Klaus Mikaelson - Baby Mikaelson's Father
Klaus held his phone up to his ear, leaving a voicemail for Rebekah.
"Rebekah, where are you? Pick up the phone, darling. Daddy is dead. It's time for a family reunion."
Kane huffed a laugh behind him as Klaus hung up the phone, smiling at his son over his shoulder.
Another call popped up on his phone, and Klaus answered it with that same smile as he and Kane walked across the streets of Mystic Falls towards the truck that housed the coffins of Klaus' four siblings, three of which included his siblings in them, and the coffin of his mother, the Original Witch.
"Stefan! Miss me already?" Klaus greeted.
"I'm just calling to thank you for my freedom." Stefan said innocently.
"Oh, I like to believe I'm a man of my word, more or less."
"Thing is, it came at too high of a price. You took everything from me, Klaus."
The smile slipped from Klaus' face, and Kane froze right there, warning his father with a facial expression.
"Let bygones be bygones, trust me. Resentment get's old." Klaus said, refusing to give in to the flaring temper.
The father and son duo reached the back of the truck.
"You know what never get's old?" Stefan asked as Kane opened the back of the truck, only to find it completely empty. None of the four coffins remained.
"Revenge." Stefan said.
"No." Klaus said.
"What's the matter, Klaus? Missing something?"
On the other end of the phone, Stefan stood in a large room with the five caskets.
"What are you doing?" Klaus asked angrily.
"Just enjoying my freedom." Stefan said with a shrug.
"I will kill you and everyone you've ever met." Klaus growled at him.
"You do that, and you will never see your family again. I wonder Klaus, as someone who has been one step ahead for a thousand years...are you prepared for this?"
