Parts of this chapter describes or implies a triggering topics such as suicide and murder, which had a hand in why it took so long for me to write…please be advised as you read. They are further down in mai's pov so if you would like to skip that part, please skip the italicized paragraph. Thank you.
Naru's P.O.V
I don't usually take on hospitals because they're most of the time too big for my small team. Though we have two more people, and i could call the others to help but since Matsuzaki and Takigawa have a baby i can't pull both of them away at the same time. I should hold off until i know what exactly we'll need before calling one of them.
"Naru. i finished setting up the microphones with Ryan." I heard Mai say as she came in, Yasu.
"Alright. Size, temps, and cameras as well?" I asked. She held up her clipboard and smiled with a nod.
"Yup!" She said proudly.
"So you actually remembered?" I asked, smirking behind my cup. I saw her eye twitch and her fist clench.
"Don't…make me hit you." She said with a low tone. Looking at the clipboard and seeing the sizes, i grabbed a rolled up paper from the table.
"I was able to get blueprints as well, so we can put a layout to the temperatures." I said as i laid it out. The door opened, Marie and Yasu walking in and finishing the set up on the monitors and sitting down.
"As far as we know so far, from patients and other staff, the phenomenon going on here is limited to the morgue, the pediatric and maternity wards, and the ICU." Ryan stated, "So we don't have to cover the entire hospital thankfully."
"I've already started picking up on unexplainable voices and noises on the mics. But it's better to wait until night time before trying to analyze since there's a lot of visitors right now." Marie stated, "I'd suggest we try to sleep right now seeing as we may be up all night."
"If you're going to be lazy and sleep just because nothing is happening, you can go home." I said back to her. Ryan sighed and Mai rubbed her eyes.
"Then what do you suggest we do Oliver?" She said, walking over and touching my arm. I felt Mai glare at her and looked at Marie.
"Walk the hospital and get EVPs, thermal reading. The normal preliminary checks we always do." I said, walking over to Mai. "Mai, you'll come with me to the pediatric and maternity wards. Marie, you and Ryan take the ICU and morgue. We already have temperatures and layout, so we just need the beginning checks of everything. You know what to look for." I grabbed the EVP, and a few other things. Leaving the base with Mai.
I'm really starting to get fed up with her. I know i told Mai she could handle it, but at this point, i'm not sure i can take it any longer.
"I'm sick of her…" I heard Mai say. I wasn't the only one feeling that then…
"Yea…I'm about to call mom and have her call her back." I said. Mai shook her head.
"Yasu and i have a plan while we're on this case…Ryan overheard us talking and told us as long as we don't physically hurt her, then he'll overlook it. I just feel bad for him, because he hasn't done anything…" Mai said, looking at the floor.
"Ryan has always been her keeper. I think he's fed up with her attitude as much as we are." I said. "I've known them since we were kids, and Ryan has taken the blame for so much of her shit."
"Oh ouch…" She said.
"I plan to keep him on if he wants to stay after she leaves." She smiled and nodded.
"Good…He's a good asset to the team. And he and Yasu get along well." She said, smiling a bit.
"Mm…Yasuhara gets along with everyone." I said, hearing her giggle.
"That's very true." She said as we got off the elevator to start the walk of the Maternity ward.
Some time passed as we walked the hospital. By the time we got back to base it was almost time for dinner.
"Lin." I said as Mai and I re-entered the base. Sitting down, I looked at my book.
"Yasuhara went to get dinner." Lin said, handing me some files. I nodded and took them as Mai laid on the couch. She was already getting tired from walking around, so i didn't say anything. I was planning to let Mai, Marie and Ryan sleep first so we could all take shifts, so letting her fall asleep wasn't a big deal at this point in the day.
"We got dinnerrr" Yasuhara came back in with Marie and Ryan after a while. I could see Maries eyes narrow.
"Not showing favoritism huh?" Marie started. I looked at my book.
"Well i was planning to let you two, and Ryan, get that sleep you talked about earlier so we could work in shifts." I said, seeing her body tense.
"Oh…" She said quietly.
"We just made it back here before you did so she laid down first." I explained. Ryan just shook his head and took a burger from the bag, sitting down. "So, go ahead and eat, then get some sleep. Lin, Yasuhara and I will watch the base until shift change." I said. Marie and Ryan nodded, leaving the room to head to the rooms we were given and Lin chuckled.
"That girl won't learn, will she?" He asked. I shook my head and opened my book.
"Apparently not." I said, reading. Though i couldn't help but look up at Mai every now and again. She was sleeping soundly, her bangs having fallen into her face. Sometimes i wondered why it was me she'd chosen…But then i stop myself before i get too far into my thoughts.
She'd started groaning quietly in her sleep, which caused me to look up at her sleeping form. I got up, walking over to her and kneeling. She didn't seem restless…or like she was having a nightmare or vision…but i couldn't be too sure.
A few nights had passed without anything happening. Marie wasn't finding a lot on the audio that was pulled, and Ryan had seen a few orbs here and there. But nothing major at the moment. Sighing, i went to grab the headphones when a scream came from down the hall where the girls were sleeping.
"Mai" I shot up going down the hall. Ryan was already outside the door trying to force it open.
"It won't open, its jammed shut!" He yelled. A few nurses had already started to gather around the end of the hall.
"Oliver!" I heard Marie yell from inside.
"We can't get it open!" Masako followed up. But i didn't hear Mai…
"Lin! Break it down!" I yelled. Lin nodded and rammed the side with his shoulder. Still wouldn't budge. He tried a few more times until finally, the door fell off its hinges and fell onto the ground. We ran in, panicked. Masako hugged John as he ran in behind me, Marie clung to me for some reason. Since she was scared i couldn't exactly push her off.
I looked around, my blood running cold…Mai wasn't here…
"Where is Mai." I said coldly, looking at the two girls.
"She was just here…" Masako said, looking around.
"She was…she was the one screaming…" Marie followed up, looking at Masako.
"It…was one of her dreams…we couldn't wake her though…" Masako said, looking at me.
"So she just…disappeared?" John asked. I clenched my fists at my side, Ryan grabbed Marie, though she tried to fight him. I grabbed one of Mai's brushes from her bag.
"Noll. Don't." Lin warned. "I sent shiki." I gripped the brush but nodded. "If they don't return in 3 hours…then you can use it…" He said.
Mai's P.O.V
It was dark…and i smelled metal…I felt cold. My dream was horrible…but it had nothing to do with the hospital. I hadn't had a dream of the hospital the entire time we've been here.
Opening my eyes, i sat up, looking around the room i was in. It was…the morgue?.. How did i get down here? I got up off the table and stumbled a bit, my legs felt like jelly…
Rubbing my head i went to try and open the door, but it…wouldn't budge… I started to panic, flashes of the room i was in as a kid entering my mind. I took deep breaths to try and calm myself down.
"It's ok Mai…just…try to get out of here…" I muttered to myself, then kept trying the door. When i noticed it wouldn't give at all, i looked around for a towel to wrap my hand in when two white lights flew in. "Shiki…" I breathed a sigh of relief, nodding to them as they both turned to go back to Lin.
I don't know how long i was down there…but Naru and them should have been here by now… I was getting sleepy again… It's so cold down here…
The area was busy and full of nurses in weird attire running around. I was one of them, running down the stairs to a patient's room with medicine in hand. People were yelling in pain, babies were crying. I didn't know what was happening. But when i finally made it to the patient's room, i had seen the worst of it…Blood everywhere, people's limbs amputated. This…wasn't a hospital…this was a fucking buther shop. The scene changed to the same nurse standing on the balcony outside what was the waiting room. Cops surrounded the place. I saw a rope in front of the nurse and i felt her scowling. She reached forward and…well…yeah… I was no longer in her body, but i saw more and more bodies like hers…Doctors, and nurses…all of them had taken their own lives so they wouldn't go to prison for the amount of death they had caused.
When i'd woke up i was back in the base. The room was quiet and dark and i couldn't see Naru… I sat up slowly and rubbed my throat, wincing. Guess i'd bruised from this dream… I stood up and walked to the door, going to get some water, when i stopped.
"Come on Oliver…one kiss and i'll leave you alone, for good…" I heard Marie say on the other side of the door. I clenched my fist tightly, is she fucking serious?
"No. That's the end of it. Stop trying." Naru said, his voice cold. I could hear her pout with her next words.
"What does she have that i don't…I don't understand." She said. I was shaking at this point. She really has no shame.
"Surprised you don't know. Since she's been nice to you this entire time considering your constant attempts to hit on me." He said. She'd gone quiet. Thinking she had walked off i opened the door, my eyes widening at what i saw in front of me. She…was…kissing him…
Naru hadn't moved, and his hands were already moving up to push her off, but at that moment, i saw red.
"Uh-oh, she really screwed up now." I heard Gene say in my head. I was too angry to comment.
"Mai…you're awake…" She had the nerve to say.
"Mai." Naru started, looking at me with a look of surprise. I couldn't speak…All i could do was stare at them. Then…she slammed into the wall. Narus' eyes widened more as he grabbed my shoulders.
"Mai! Mai calm down!" He yelled, "As much as she deserved that, this isn't the time to fight her!" I was shaking…I wanted to kill her.
