Chapter 13- Declaration of War

(September 23, 2013)

President Obama slowly walks into the International Military Command Center deep under the Pentagon. Inside the room already are the men of the Terran Joint Command, the members of the Jedi High Council, and the other four members of the Council of Five: President Francois Hollande of France, Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom, President Vladimir Putin of Russia, and Xi Jinping of China.

As Obama takes his seat, he looks around the table before saying, "Gentlemen. You all have heard the rumors. It is true. The Death Star was real. And I say "was" because we have confirmation that jus yesterday, the Rebel Alliance, supported by several of our squadrons, successfully destroyed the Death Star as it attempted to destroy the rebel base on the moon of Yavin 4."

There are smiles around the table at this news. "Good to see that Imperial arrogance has finally cost the," Prime Minister Cameron says.

"Indeed. However, we also have confirmation that Alderaan, as well as the main city on Jedha, were destroyed by the Death Star, and Bail Organa was confirmed dead in the destruction of Alderaan. They also captured Princess Leia of Alderaan, as well as Admiral Samuel Adams. In addition, our squadrons participated in the Battle of Yavin, and several pilots were lost. So, Terran blood has once again been spilt in the Andromeda Galaxy," Obama says.

"I say that we have waited too long. It is time to truly take the fight to the Galactic Empire," Putin says.

"I agree. We've waited long enough, and we're ready for this. The time for hiding is done," General Rommel says.

"I agree," Obama says. The rest of the table quickly echoes the same sentiments.

"It is clear, as of the moment, that the Empire will soon attempt to send a task force to finish what the Death Star attempted to do. We have confirmation Darth Vader survived, and he will have informed the Empire of the location of the rebel base on Yavin 4. They will need help. We will have to send a task force to assist in the rebel evacuation and protect them against Imperial retribution," Obama says.

"I agree. We'll get a task force dispatched immediately," Fleet Admiral Gary Roughead says.

Obama then speaks up. "I will initiate the final vote for a declaration of war at a meeting of the Terran Alliance Assembly tomorrow. However, there is a vital detail we must discuss. That being the involvement of the Terran Jedi Order in this war," he says.

All eyes turn to the members of the Jedi Council. After several moments, Ahsoka speaks up. "We will discuss it as member of the High Council and with others members of the order. However, I know that there will be those among us who will wish to help bring a final end to the Sith. I know I will. What I propose is that the Jedi Council assign several members of the Terran Jedi Order to assist in the war effort, while keeping the rest of the Order here on Terra."

"I agree," Plo says.

"It is clear that this is a discussion that the Jedi Council will need to have, and we will await your decision. However, the vote tomorrow will continue. And I feel rather certain that very soon, we will be at war with the Galactic Empire," Obama says.

Around the table, many of the men begin to smile, feeling a sense of satisfaction, knowing that it will soon be time.

Obama smiles a bit as he gathers up the papers that his speech is written on. Less than an hour ago, the Terran Alliance Assembly had conducted a vote on whether or not to go to war with the Galactic Empire. To the surprise of some, of all 201 members of the Terran Alliance (192 countries on Earth and the 9 other member worlds of the Alliance), all of them had voted in favor of war. As the vote was going on, a task force of the Terran Starfleet, numbering 8 ships, had been dispatched from their location near the wormhole on the edge of the Milky Way to travel to the Yavin system to evacuate the Rebellion from the Yavin 4 moon.

Now, Obama, on behalf of the entire Terran Alliance leadership, is about to speak to the entire Alliance. His speech is also being recorded, and will be broadcast on the Holonet across the Empire.

Obama keeps a neutral expression on his face as he approaches the podium, with hundreds of reporters waiting for him to begin his speech. He keeps his expression neutral, but feels a sense of satisfaction as he approaches the podium.

Obama lays out his speech on the podium. He looks out on the assembled reporters and dignitaries. "Citizens of the Terran Alliance, and citizens of the Galactic Empire. I am President Barack Obama of the United States of America. Today, I am speaking to you on behalf of the entire Terran Alliance leadership."

"Several days ago, in a battle over the planet Scariff, Admiral Samuel Adams was captured by the Galactic Empire. In the attempt to rescue him, the Terran Alliance discovered the existence of an Imperial battlestation, known as the Death Star. This Death Star was built with a superlaser powerful enough to destroy an entire planet in a single blast. We also discovered that this battlestation destroyed the planet Alderaan less than a week ago, killing all of its inhabitants, including Senator Bail Organa, a long time friend and ally of the Terran Alliance."

"However, I come before you not just with news of the Death Star's existence, but also of its destruction. Just two days ago, men and women of the Rebel Alliance, as well as pilots of the Terran Alliance, successfully destroyed the Death Star in a battle in the Yavin system. However, despite the destruction of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire still possesses great power, and still poses a grave threat."

"For years, the Terran Alliance has waited for its chance to exact its revenge for the betrayal against us at the end of the Clone Wars. And it is now clear that no planet, even our own, is safe from the power of the Galactic Empire. It is clear to us in the leadership of the Terran Alliance that the time for hiding is over."

"Earlier today, the Terran Alliance General Assembly unanimously voted in favor of Terran Resolution 671. And per that resolution, on behalf of the Terran Alliance, I hereby declare that, as of today, September 23, ano domini 2013, that a state of war exists between the Terran Alliance and the Galactic Empire."

There is a round of cheers from the assembled reporters and dignitaries. Obama pauses briefly, then continues, "The Terran Alliance will begin to mobilize our forces immediately. The tyranny of the Galactic Empire will end." He then looks right into the cameras and says, "Emperor Palpatine, I now speak directly to you. Your reign is drawing to an end. Your betrayal has not been forgotten, and it will not go unpunished. We will liberate every planet under your thrall, and once your Empire has crumbled and your military is destroyed…we are coming for you. We will not stop until everything you have built has been destroyed and freedom has been restored to the Andromeda Galaxy."

Across the world, people watching Obama's speech cheer wildly, feeling a great sense of satisfaction at knowing that the time has finally come to end the Empire.

And across the Andromeda Galaxy, citizens watch Obama's speech as it is leaked onto the HoloNet, and fear slowly begins to spread across the galaxy, knowing that chaos is coming for the Empire, because the Terran Alliance is finally coming.

And, I'll end there. I hope you liked this chapter, even if it was short.

So, I hope you liked Obama's speech. And, at long last, the Terran Alliance is at war with the Empire. The first real battle between the Terrans and the Empire will be next chapter during the evacuation of Yavin 4.
