Chapter 61- Planning a Rescue
(June 1, 2017)
"Do you know why they called for us?" Leia asks as the shuttle shakes a little bit in a spot of turbulence.
Kelly, Luke and Leia had been out together for a day of sightseeing in Baltimore, wanting to take a day just to enjoy themselves with just the three of them. They had visited the famous Baltimore Aquarium, followed by the various museum ships in Baltimore Harbor. They had then moved on to Fort McHenry. While touring the fort, Kelly had received a transmission from Mikhail Fradkov, head of the Russian SVR, requesting that they come to the Terran Alliance Headquarters in New York City. A shuttle had been sent to pick them up from the fort to bring them to New York.
"No. Director Fradkov didn't give me a reason. Just that it was very urgent," Kelly says.
"Well, surely, if the Director of Russian intelligence is calling for us personally, it has to be something very important. And probably something that affects us personally," Luke says.
"You're right. My only wonder is what it could be," Kelly says.
"Captain Skywalker," the pilot of the shuttle calls back to Kelly, "We're one minute out from landing."
"Understood," Kelly responds.
The shuttle begins its descent to the landing pad. Within a minute, it touches down, and the pilot begins powering down the engines as he lowers the boarding ramp.
Kelly, Luke, and Leia all stand up and walk down the boarding ramp. They are immediately met by a soldier, who says, "Follow me."
The soldier leads them into the complex. After leading them into one of the buildings. The soldier leads them down a number of hallways before leading them into one room.
As they enter, they see two Russian men waiting for them. One of the Russians stands up and walks over to them. "Welcome. My name is Sergei Kuzmich. It's an honor to meet you," he says.
"A pleasure to meet you as well, Agent Kuzmich. However, I must say I'm intrigued as to why we were asked to come here," Kelly says.
"Well, allow us to explain," Kuzmich says. He gestures for them to sit down, which they all do.
"So, I am one of the senior SVR agents assigned to the hunt for Han Solo. As you know, we've spent an extensive amount of time attempting to locate him. Jabba the Hutt has hidden himself well. However, the reason we have called you here is because one of our agents finally managed to locate Jabba's palace, and Han Solo," Kuzmich says.
All three of them stare at Kuzmich in shock. Finally, Leia exclaims, "Really? You found him?!"
"Yes. While there was evidence for Jabba's palace to be located in a number of places, as well as the final destination of Han Solo. However, we finally managed to locate Jabba's palace on Tatooine, far from any settlement. After several months of searching for a way in, we able to get one of our agents into the palace, disguised as a bounty hunter. And while inside, he was able to take the following pictures with a miniature camera," Kuzmich says.
The other Russian agent passes over a folder. Kelly opens the folder and spreads out the pictures. They're somewhat grainy, but clearly show the subject of each photo. One shows Jabba enjoying some sort of show. Two more show Boba Fett in Jabba's throne room. Three more show other parts of the palace. But the two that most interest them show Han, still frozen in carbonite, hanging on Jabba's wall.
"Finally, we found him," Leia says as she looks intently at the picture showing Han.
"Conducting a rescue mission, however, will not be easy. The palace's position on Tatooine's topography makes it near impossible for any rescue force to approach the palace without being seen. The palace also has defenses built into it, as well as the palace guards and bounty hunters serving Jabba," Kuzmich says.
"Of course it can't be easy," Kelly mutters.
Luke's face suddenly lights up. "I've got an idea. If we can't make a direct assault on the palace, then we're going to have to sneak in. Set up the rescue bit by bit. And I have an idea on how to do that," he says.
Luke then looks at Kuzmich. "Is your agent still in the palace?" he asks.
"Unfortunately not. We got him out of there as quickly as we could. We didn't want to leave him there and risk him being discovered," Kuzmich says.
Luke looks disappointed, but not too much. He turns to look at Kelly and says, "Why don't we call your dad? See if he can help us? I think my idea is gonna work."
(June 21, 2017)
Luke walks slowly into the CIC on board the Star Destroyer Granite Mountain. After going to Adams, he petitioned the Admiralty to grant the small team a ship to use to carry out the rescue. The Admiralty had granted Adams' request and given them the Granite Mountain to use to carry out the rescue. Adams had also given them a detachment of special ops troops. Calvin had also decided to accompany them on the mission.
Luke had contacted Lando and Chewie. Chewie had responded. Apparently, Lando had infiltrated the palace, while Chewie was trying to figure out how to get into the palace himself. Chewie had rendezvoused with the team at Teth before the Granite Mountain made its way to Tatooine. The ship was currently waiting in the outer parts of the system.
Luke had just returned from dropping off R2-D2 and C3PO on Tatooine to execute the first part of his plan. As he enters the CIC, he sees Chewie, Leia, Kelly, and Calvin all waiting for him.
"Everything went well?" Calvin asks.
"I hope so. The droids seemed like they were well on their way to reaching the palace by the time I left," Luke says.
"Are you sure about this plan of yours, babe?" Kelly asks. She was feeling rather upset that she was supposed to wait while Leia and Luke infiltrated the palace.
"Don't worry, Kelly. It's all going to be okay. If my attempt to convince Jabba doesn't work, you and Calvin will be clear to let 'em have it," he says.
Kelly rolls her eyes. "You are too reckless, sweetie," she says.
Luke smiles. "Everything will work out, Kelly. And soon enough, we'll have Han back," he says.
He then looks back at the others. "Alright, everyone. Let's do this. Let's go get Han back," he says.
And, I'll end there. I know, a short chapter, but I couldn't think of a whole lot more to add.
So, I'm not going to show most of what happens in Jabba's palace, as in this, nothing changes really from the film. So, next chapter is going to start en route to the Sarlacc pit. Until it's up, please leave a review and stay tuned.
