...

"Heya Harry!..Lu! Sleep well?"

"How was Detention?"

"Did you get hung up by your toenails?"

"Betcha did!"

The Weasley Twins laughed, all fun the next morning while the four first years trundled down to breakfast still exhausted from last night's rather memorable events.

"Oh come off it, you two." Ron grumbled rubbing his eyes as he slid clumsily into his seat at the Great Hall.

Harry stifled a yawn and took his usual seat across from Ron and next to his sister and Hermione.

"Why? It's all in good fun. Ain't that right, Lulu?" Fred and George sat down next to Lucy, making her blush when they tossed her hair playfully.

"Holy Cricket! Look at this!" Hermione passed her copy of the Daily Prophet at Harry and Ron leaned across the table to get a better look.

"Dumbledore to be cited on Troll Incident at Hogwarts. He is to interviewed today by The Prophet's very own Rita Skeeter." Lucy read aloud.

"What! But how are we supposed to report Snape to him if he's gone for the day!" Ron exclaimed a bit too loudly earning a glare from Hermione.

"We wait to till he gets back of course. Besides we don't have any evidence yet. That comes tonight." Hermoine glanced quickly at Lucy.

Lucy shifted uneasily in her seat. "I don't know, Hermoine. What if it's not what it looks like? Snape hates us a lot as it is, why make it worse by spying on him?" She stirred her oatmeal around with a frown on her face.

Harry put his hand on her arm. "Because if we're right we'll be saving a lot of people not just us." He lowered his voice. "Besides, how's he going to know you're spying if you're serving detention?"

George nudged Lucy in the elbow. "Go on Lu. It'll be a cinch. He'll probably have you writing lines or reorganizing his potions cabinet anyway. It'll be easy to eavesdrop." He grinned impishly before reaching over her plate to grab a grape from the fruit basket.

Hermione nodded her head. "They're right, Lucy. You can do this. Just relax and don't let Snape suspect that you might be up to something." She smiled and took the newspaper back from Harry.

Lucy smiled back. "Thanks Guys...I guess the worst that can happen is that I don't find out anything." She started to take a sip of pumpkin juice when Harry clapped her on the back.

"That's the spirit."

...

Ow... Lucy winced when a sharp twinge of pain prickled across her temple again where her scar was.

It had been bothering her all day since first period and Lucy knew Harry's was hurting him too by the way he was rubbing his forehead incessantly, especially during Defense Against Dark Arts class.

"Lucy!" Lucy jumped when Hermione harshly poked her in the ribs with her elbow effectively gaining her attention. "Ow? What?" She rubbed at new sore spot.

Hermione softened her gaze. "I was asking what you thought about the final examinations. Are you okay? You've been rubbing your head ever since first period started." She asked worriedly.

Lucy shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. My scar's burning. Like it did in the Dark Forest." She murmured softly.

"Same here." Harry groaned and rubbed his own scar. "I think it could be a warning of something."

"A warning of what?" Ron asked immediately worried at the prospects. Lucy shrugged. "I don't know maybe it has something to do with-."

"Of course!" Harry cut her off. "Why didn't I think of it before!" He started to walk much faster than he was earlier across the castle yard.

Ron, Lucy and Hermione quickly tried to follow him. "What?" Lucy caught up to him first. Harry motioned to Hagrid.

"That! Don't do you think it's a bit odd that a stranger shows up one night carrying in his possession the one thing Hagrid's been wanting more than anything? I mean how many people do you figure go around carrying Dragon's eggs in their pockets? That's like carrying a komodo dragon's egg or a Python's egg in the muggle world!" Harry waved his arms sporatically.

Hermione nodded her head at this. "True. But what does that have to do with anything? Maybe he was a dragon breeder or something like Ron's brother." She suggested.

Harry shook his head. "Hagrid," He spoke up when the group got within earshot of the half giant gamekeeper. "Who gave you that dragon egg the other night? What did he look like?"

Hagrid lowered a pipe from his lips. "Well uh...see now I don't know. I couldn't see his face. Not through the black hood he was wearin anyways." He shrugged his massive shoulders and fiddled with the instrument in his hands.

"But...you must have talked to him, Hagrid." Lucy put in, knowing where her brother was going with this.

"Well o' course I did. He wanted to know what kind of animals I looked after and I told him next to Fluffy, a dragon'll be no problem." Hagrid smiled a bit.

Ron looked shocked. "Fluffy! You don't mean that horrible three headed dog we-OW!" Hermione stomped on his foot cutting him off before he could spill anymore.

"How do yeh four know about Fluffy?" Hagrid became suspicious. Harry shook his head. "Lucky guess. Did the stranger seem interested in Fluffy, Hagrid?" He asked hoping Hagrid wouldn't close up on them.

"Of course he did! How many three headed dogs do you come across anyways? I told him the the trick with any beast like Fluffy is to know how to calm em. Like with Fluffy all yeh got to do is play em a bit of music and he'll fall right to sleep!" He proclaimed proudly.

The four first years exchanged glances with each other. Hagrid suddenly paled.

"I should NOT have told yeh four that. Should not have said that..." He shook his head. He started to reprimand the four students when they took off on him, running back in the direction of the castle breezeway.

"Hey! Wait!...Where do you kids think you're going?"

...

"Harry!...Harry wait! Why are you running?" Hermione panted speaking only once they'd gotten out of earshot of all the other students.

Harry stopped just outside McGonagall's classroom. "Because it all fits! That stranger Hagrid met was no stranger! It was Snape! And now he knows exactly how to get past Fluffy on the third floor!"

Lucy's hands flew to her mouth. "Oh Gosh! That means he'll be able to find the Sorceror's Stone!"

Harry nodded his head. "That's right. Which means is more important than ever now that you gather as much information as you can." He stared confidentally at his twin.

Hermione started to add something when a long shadow fell over the group silencing her immediately.

"Afternoon." Snape drawled as he came to stand directly behind Harry, Ron and Lucy.

"Eep!" Ron squeaked. Lucy gathered her composure first. "Af..Afternoon Professor." She timidly nodded her head.

Snape pretended not to have heard her. "Now what could three young first years such as yourselves doing indoors...on a day like this?" He gazed curiously between Harry and Lucy before his gaze fell on Ron and Hermione.

"Uh well..." Hermione started to stammer, desperately trying to think up some valid excuse. "We were just...getting some shade from the sun." She tried to lie seamlessly.

Snape raised an eyebrow at her. "Is that so?...Well you'll want to be careful in the future. People will think you're..." He returned his gaze to Harry who was pointedly glaring at him suspiciously.

"...up to something." He swept past the twins making Lucy flinch a bit when his cape brushed against her face.

"He's definitely up to something." She nodded once Snape had left out of earshot. Harry nodded his agreement.

"Yeah, you better keep a close eye on him." He said trying not to smile. Lucy smiled anyway at him. "Just leave it to me."

...

"Ah, right on time." Snape rose eerily slow from his desk nodding as he moved to carrying a few assorted bottles and vials to a supply cabinet.

"You will be sorting my supply closet tonight. Take care not to spill anything. Some of these substances can be extremely harmful if exposed to unprotected flesh." He took care to slowly close the cabinet as he spoke.

Lucy gulped audibly.

"Y-yes Sir." She studied the toes of her old oxfords, suddenly finding them much more fascinating than before.

"You will start from the bottom shelf." Snape continued, floating back towards his desk where a stack of parchment sat waiting to be read. "Make sure they are all in order by potency. I'm sure you are by now well familiar with the differing levels of potency." He settled himself stiffly at his desk, bending over to look through a sheaf of parchment on his desk.

Lucy nodded her head. "Yes Sir." She took a deep breath and quickly situated herself in front of the supply cabinet.

Tarantulla legs...lacewing flies?...Lucy wrinkled her nose when she noticed some of the bottles she was supposed to sort.

One bottle contained what appeared to be eyeballs sitting in a pickling solution while another appeared to have dried seeds of some sort.

"Professor Snape, a moment if you will, please." Lucy paused when she heard a familiar voice follow a knock at the door.

"Mr. Filch." Snape softly set the stack of parchment he was reading aside on his desk, standing to motion the caretaker in.

"Professor," Filch panted as he stumbled in, taking no notice of Lucy at first. "I've a message from the Headmaster. He is delayed and he has a special request for you. It's about the thing." He handed the Potions' Master a small brown envelope.

"Indeed.." Snape looked down at the letter boredly before continuing. "Thank you Mr. Filch that will be all." He turned to return to his desk.

Lucy ducked down in order to avoid being caught eavesdropping and shifted a bottle of skunkswood across the bottom shelf.

The thing...he must mean the Sorceror's Stone. She slowly moved a couple more bottles between the first and second shelf.

"Besoar would go before Gillyweed I believe, Miss Potter." Snape spoke without looking up from the papers he was grading.

Lucy flushed scarlet. "Right, Professor."

"Mmm..." Snape murmured and Lucy looked up only to see him poring over the letter Filch had given him moments before.

His face was serious yet Lucy could see a bit of sadness in his expression as well which puzzled her.

Is he having second thoughts about stealing the stone?

Luce...have you got anything yet? Harry's thoughts projected to her suddenly. Lucy bumped into the cabinet.

No not yet. Don't scare me like that, Professor Snape will think I'm up to something." She clenched her teeth as she reached for a bottle of spider fangs.

"Something wrong, Miss Potter?" Snape drawled. Lucy shook her head. "No Sir." She leaned towards the top shelf.

Besoar, monkshood, spider fangs, gillyweed...

Your detention's almost up. You sure he hasn't said anything about the Sorceror's Stone? Harry persisted. Lucy rolled her eyes.

I said no. Now stop thinking at me. I can't concentrate.

"Miss Potter, I'm afraid I'm going to have to dismiss you early from detention tonight. Be prepared to serve an extra hour tomorrow after supper." Snape narrowed his eyes as he tucked the letter back into his robes.

Lucy nodded her head. "Y-Yes Sir. Is everything all right?" She asked after a minute while dusting off her robes.

Snape wordlessly waved at the door. "Goodnight Miss Potter." He spoke in a way that told Lucy the conversation was over.

The younger Potter sighed.

"Goodnight Sir." Lucy quietly closed the Ingredients' Cabinet and walked briskly for the door that led out of the classroom.

...

"You're back!" Ron jumped up eagerly from the couch the minute Lucy entered the common room.

"Now?" Hermione looked up sharply from her book. "But I thought you had one more hour." She sat up on the sofa. Lucy shrugged her shoulders.

"I did!" She bent over and pet Athene when she came down from the chair to greet her mistress.

"Professor Snape sent me back early. I think it might have something to do with the letter Filch gave him from Dumbledore. He seemed kind of worried about it." She bent to pick up the kitten and scratched her behind the ears.

"Letter?" Harry seized Lucy by the wrist. "Did you see what was in it? Anything about the Sorceror's Stone?" Lucy yanked her arm back.

"No, of course not! He hardly left me alone and he kept the letter on himself. You'll have to give me one more night. I couldn't find out anything." She cuddled Athene close as if to shield her from harm.

Hermione slammed her book shut. "There's no time for that!" She got up from the couch. "That letter could have said anything. Anything that might make Snape desperate to get the Sorceror's Stone. He could make his move tonight!"

"She's right!" Ron chimed in. "We cant wait anymore, Luce."

Lucy frowned at her friends. "So...what do we do?" She asked looking down at the worn soles of her shoes.

Harry gave her a familiar look.

"We go down the hatch on the third floor...tonight." He answered.
