5 Sophie's POV
I am so stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
Sophie found herself thinking the next morning.
She basically left him hanging between 'The friend zone' and a relationship.
She didn't know what to do.
And she felt bad So she did the one thing that might either help, or it might make things worse.
She called Biana.
"Wait, you turned him down?" Biana asked incredulously, when Sophie had finished sharing the story with her.
"No, I just didn't NOT turn him down." Sophie said in a small voice. She felt a little bad about how she handled the situation, but she wouldn't take back her answer.
She knew she wasn't ready for another relationship, and that was the truth. Keefe had helped her see that.
"Ugh! Thats the same thing." Biana said.
"Ok, so what do I do though? I mean, I'm not ready for a relationship, but now nothing will be the same! This is Keefe, it's still a little crazy to think he likes me.
And if I say yes, there will be no turning back, but if I say no, he'll hate me, and I REALLY, don't want him to hate me." She hadn't really thought much about what would happen if she said no. What if he did hate her?
"He won't hate you, he'll just try to hide his feelings, and probably not hangout with you as much. But it'll be ok. I promise." Biana said practically
"Your right," Sophie sighed, "I just.. I don't know, I don't want things to end the way they did with Fitz, so I feel like it's between losing him now, or losing him later, but at a higher cost."
"He isn't Fitz. Remember that Sophie. Keefe is the one who stayed by your side when his best friend was dating the person they both liked and didn't get upset or angry. I doubt Fitz would have taken it so well. I love him, but he can be wrong." Biana said sounding more serious than normal.
"I'll try." Sophie replied simply.
After a few moments of silence, Sophie decided to say what was on her mind. "I just wish we could go back to normal again, With out all this crush stuff hovering over everything. If only we could go back to when we were planning when to play Bacequest next, not worrying about what the Neverseen are up to, or which guy might like me."
"Ok, first of all," Biana started, "you have never really had a normal. It was always something goes wrong, and you fix it, but at the cost of you almost dieing.
"Your so smart sometimes Biana." Sophie said with a smile. She was being incredibly supportive since the whole break up thing had happened, and Sophie very much appreciated it.
Biana ended up staying for the rest of the morning, til, she had to go home for lunch.
Sophie had just gotten done with cleaning her room, when Fitz hailed her asking to come to Everglen. She had just gotten done politely declining, when she heard Edaline call her name.
She, of course, hurried down as fast as she could, hearing the clear urgency in her mom's voice.
When she got to the first level of there enormous home, she couldn't see anyone so she followed the voices into the entryway.
"What's going..." Sophie dropped off when she saw the worry on Alden's face.
"Sophie, I'm sorry to come here with such news, but it's Keefe, we think he manifested, but we don't know what's going on. I've never seen anything like this before."
Sophie ran to the leapmaster as fast as she could.
What if he hurt people?
What if he hurt himself?
What if it's something bad?
What if it changes him so much he's not Keefe anymore?
A million thoughts were running through her head right then.
But none of them were even close to what she expected when she entered Foxfire.
Right outside the Healing Center doors were quite a few of her friends and family.
Biana, Fitz, Dex, Tam and Linh, Marella, Wylie, Stina, Alden, Della, Lord Cassius, Grady, Edaline, Magnete Leto, Tiergan, Quinlan, and all twelve Counselors.
"What is everyone doing here? What's wrong? Is Keefe ok? Are you guys ok? Can I go in? Is it safe? Where's Keefe?" Sophie asked saying only half of the questions that plagued her at the moment.
"Sophie, I don't know what to say..."
Oh no. Sophie thought. This isn't good
"Something weird is happening. It's like a whole different world in there" Della said, when she saw the look on Sophie's face.
"Then let me see! Please!"
Sophie needed to know if he was ok.
It's the only thing that's important.
She just needed to know he was ok.
"You should be able to go in there ok, but... like Mrs. Vacker said, it's very strange.
We think he is projecting his memories into the room. We originally thought it had something to do with his mind, but everyone can go in the room and talk to him just fine. Just be prepared. He's not quite the same." Magnete Leto said, though it was clear even he didn't understand what was happening.
She took a deep breath and, just as she was about to turn the handle, a hand was gently set on her shoulder.
She turned to see Fitz, looking intently into her eyes.
"Sophie, if you want me to go in with you, I will. And... he'll be fine, tomorrow I bet he'll be over at my house a sling to play Bramble. He'll be ok."
She sent a shaky smile into eyes that, despite all else, still made her heart flutter.
"No, I'll be fine but..."
"If you need me, I'll be right here." He interrupted.
Thoes were the kindest words he had said to her since Everything.
It was good to just be Sophie and Fitz, very good friends, and amazing Cognates.
She smiled again, and turned the handle of, quite possibly the most familiar room at Foxfire.
When she went in, she heard a voice that sounded like Keefe, and yet different in a way she couldn't place. She turned the corner and saw Keefe in the middle of the floor looking at his hands.
"Keefe? A few you ok?" She asked, but it was as if he couldn't here her.
She tried calling him a few more times, but to no avail.
So she stepped out of the doorway into the room, and...
All she could see was grass and rolling hills. Then she saw it in the distance. Calla's Panakes tree.
Havenfield? What? Where was he?
She needed to talk to Keefe, but when she turned around, the Healing Center was completely gone.
"KEEFE!" She called at the top of her voice.
Where was he?
"KEEFE!" She called again.
"You sound like Silveny." It was Keefe's voice, but she couldn't see him anywhere.
She turn in a slow circle, and when she made it all the way around she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She turned around to see Keefe staring right at her.
She hesitated only a moment before pulling him into a hug.
But something was off.
He was different somehow.
She pulled away. Then she realized what was wrong.
It was Keefe, but it wasn't the Keefe from now.
He looked younger, yet familiar.
He looked to be about 13. The same age as when they first met.
"It's easier this way. You know, going back to a happier time." Keefe said, catching her stare.
"I do know, but Keefe, what's happening? This is crazy!" Sophie said getting straight to the point.
"Well... it's kinda a long story."
"Keefe. What have you not been telling me." Sophie said hesitantly. She didn't know if she wanted to know, what he was going to say.
"You don't have time, they pull anyone out of they stay here more that ten minutes." Keefe said simply.
"Just tell me. Please. I need to know what's going on. They won't take me out of here, it's not dangerous." Sophie asked.
Keefe blew out a breath.
"Then I guess I should start at the beginning. So yesterday after we, you know had our talk I started to feel some tingling. It started in the tips of my fingers, but soon spread to all over. I didn't thing much of it cause it didn't hurt, but today when I woke up, Ro was missing, and I was like transparentish, so I came here and Elwin didn't know what to do. So he left the room and called a bunch of people. After that, I thing I dozed off for a bit, and when I woke up no one was here, so I started thinking of...you, and next thing I know I'm at Havenfield, and I can make myself disappear. And anyone who is in the same room as me is here to. Though I think it's all virtual or something. But I do feel strangely aware of...everything. I think it's some sort of illusion thing. But I don't really understand." Keefe said it all kinda quickly, like he had memorized it before hand.
"What do you mean your more 'aware'? Aware how? Keefe, this doesn't make any sense." Sophie said trying to understand everything she had just been told.
"Honestly? I don't know, but I think I can make it stop, I just have to figure it out. But I wanted to talk to you." Keefe said as if he were still thinking about the words.
"What. Anything." Sophie said immediately.
"I need you to help me find Ro, I think when I was sleeping, I did what ever this is, and she got lost. It's the only logical explanation." Keefe said clearly worried about his bodyguard.
"But once you left wouldn't it stop? I mean that is how it works, isn't it?" She had no idea what was happening. It was all so confusing.
"Not if it was one of thoes voidy thingys that you do when your teleporting. She could be lost in weird gray nothingness!"
Keefe made a valid point. She wasn't quite convinced, but she'd try it for Keefe.
"Ok. But your sure you can make it go back to normal?" Sophie replied, hoping he could, but his answer wasn't much of a surprise.
"I don't know. Probably, maybe? But don't worry I'm sure you'll be able to figure this out, you always do. I promise it'll all be ok." Keefe said assuredly.
It was good to know people believe in her. That he believes in her.
"That's a pretty big promise, you know, considering. But thank you. Just...stay safe. kay?" Sophie said not quite wanting to leave. What Keefe could do, it was amazing and a little scary at the same time.
"Ok. You too. And all you have to do to go out is go back to where you started and take three steps backwards that should take you back to the Healing Center. And Sophie? Keefe asked coming one step closer.
"Yeah?" She found it rather hard to breath when he was standing so close, and she was sure he could tell.
"Don't die." Keefe said with a joking smile on his face.
Yup. He knew. Empaths.
She was also pretty sure he knew it annoyed her to.
Sophie decided not to answer, but instead went back to where she came, and took three steps back into the Healing Center.
