So... I haven't updated in two years. And I am highly ashamed of that... Damn. I'm so sorry everyone. Life has kicked my butt recently and it's been hectic in my household. Enjoy this chapter.
I do not own Hawaii Five-0 or its characters, it belongs to CBS and its creators.
Chapter Twenty-Three
"She really never said anything about Finn?"
"As long as she has been with me, she's never said anything about her time in the Navy. The only things I know from her time is the files we have from when she shot me." Steve sighs, looking out at the ocean gently sway against the beach. "Everything else is... Confidential I guess." Danny gives him a sympathetic look.
"Do you think she's uncomfortable telling you things?"
"I mean... Probably. I don't know why she would be, but I'd hate to push and make her upset." Danny nods.
"Okay, yeah, I get that. When Grace doesn't want to tell me something, I really want to know, but she just gets mad at me if I push. So, smart idea." They go quiet for a little bit, listening to the ocean and sipping their beers. Junior was out running errands, and Alyx was currently spending time with Finn, apparently.
At the dinner, Finn had unexpectedly shown up, and Alyx nearly had tackled him to the floor in a hug. After hugging each other for a little bit, Finn then started scolding Alyx for being an idiot. He said he'd been in physical therapy when he heard she was being hunted for shooting the Five-0 leader and wanted to get out here even earlier, but due to PT, he couldn't. His doctor wouldn't allow him to fly from San Diego where he was receiving treatment so he had to wait until now. When he got wind that she had just graduated the Honolulu Police Academy and where they were eating, he tracked her down and showed up.
They were able to visit with him a little bit. Lieutenant Finn Koto was a IUD specialist on her team. He was quite intelligent and had a good spirit. He and Alyx seemed quite close, which was good, Steve guessed. At least she had a couple of friends outside of their group that didn't hate her.
Danny looks over at him. "How'd you meet her?" Steve looks over at him.
"Who?"
"Kai. How'd you meet Kai?"
"We met in a high school. We were in the same classes, and she was... Well, she was a cheerleader. She caught my eye, I caught her eye. We started dating and it was going really well until I was sent to the mainland." Steve sighs. "We tried long distance, but it was difficult. I was able to attend her graduation and... Then we broke up. After I got out of the Naval academy, I came back to Hawaii to visit my father before I was deployed, and... We reunited." He sighs. "If she had just told me, I would've done everything and anything to help her."
"Twenty-one years without knowing you had a daughter is tough." Steve sighs. "I wish I had knew that Charlie was mine earlier." Steve nods.
"I wish she... I wish she hadn't been scared to tell me." Danny looks at the broken look on Steve's face and he can't help his own heart from breaking a little. Besides Mary and Joan, Alyx is really the only blood family he has left. Suddenly, all the years seem to have finally caught up to Steve. The shock about having a daughter, his high school sweetheart dying four years ago without him knowing, everything going on right now... God. Steve needed a break. A good long break.
Danny knew what he needed.
"So, you really didn't tell anybody about me?"
Alyx looks at her suddenly very interesting shave ice, a dark blush coming to her cheeks. Finn rolls his eyes.
"Alyx, come on. You really never told anybody about your time in the Navy? Not even your biological father who you are living with?"
"Uh... No."
"Alyx."
"Okay, look, I... Never wanted to tell them about everything in the first place." She sighs. "I regret everything that I did that day. Taking the deal with that stupid man, actually going through with it..." She shakes her head. "I don't know what came over me." Finn stared at her for a moment, not really believing her.
"So, where'd you put the money?"
"I didn't accept it."
"You didn't?"
"I told him to shove it."
"Good for you. Still attempted homicide."
"Finn, please."
"Alyx, what you did was reckless. If Commander McGarrett didn't forgive you, you would be rotting away in a maximum security cell right now. For life. No bail outs, nothing. You would've killed the last thing you had on this planet."
"Finn, I know that. I know. Do you know how much agonizing I have done over this? I'm still agonizing over it." Alyx rubs her face agitatedly. "I have run every scenario through my head multiple times. I still pinch myself every morning to make sure it's not a dream. Steve... I can't believe he forgave me after everything I put him through. I still wonder if he's regretting it. He's so..." She makes a noise in her throat, and Finn looks at his almost empty cup of ice.
They sit in silence for a little bit before Alyx lightly bumps him with her shoulder.
"How's your leg?"
"It's..." He drifts off, looking at his left leg. "It's okay." Alyx softens, looking down.
"I wish I had done more."
"Alyx, you took down thirteenarmed men, by yourself. And you wish you could've done more? Girl, you really are insane." He shakes his head. "Alyx, I got an amputated leg because I was an idiot. It wasn't your fault."
"I-"
"Zip it." She obeys and quiets, looking down.
"Have you talked to any of the others?"
"I talked to them before I flew out. Yasmine is back in Seattle, Ivan is in Montana traveling, and Ray is in Texas traveling to Arizona."
"I see."
"They never reached out to you? Because they told me they heard what you did on the news."
"Oh, was it national?" She curses under her breath.
"No, we were all on Hawaii when it went out. You were actually the one who delayed all of our flights."
"Sorry." She sighs. "I guess I really am disowned from everyone in my previous life." Finn frowns.
"You aren't."
"But I am. HPD hates my guts, and now I'm graduated to be one of them. I'm going to get a training officer that'll put me through absolute hell."
"You never thought to go back to Chicago? Everyone there loves you."
"I did. Multiple times. I looked at airplane tickets and everything. I was just ready to leave and never come back after I finished parole, but..."
"Steve?"
"Yes. He seemed so happy to have me in his life, as horrible of a way I came into it. I wish I had magic to erase this whole thing and return home. If I did that, I could redo it all."
"What would you do?"
"What do you mean?"
"If you could erase this whole thing, how would you do it?"
"I would just kick myself and walk into his office and tell him who I am. I'm Alyx Kyoshi, I'm daughter of Kai Akimoto, and you're my father." She waved her hand. "Hi, Dad." Finn laughs.
"Really? That's how you would tell your dad who you were?"
"Hey, it's better than shooting him." Finn rolls his eyes and they go quiet once again.
"But... You don't have magic, and you can't erase what you have done. Aren't you happy that Steve accepted you?"
"Of course I am. I'm over the moon because of it. But still. I have dreamt of every other scenario of how I could've handled it better, and god do I wish I could've done it better."
"You'll only continue to hurt yourself if you think about this any longer. It has impacted your life majorly, but at the same time, you have a great new thing. You have your biological dad with you. He'll be by your side through so many things, but you have to come to terms with that. You have to overcome and accept the impact of the shooting, and accept everything new that's going on right now. You're a cop now, you have your dad, you have the Five-0 team. You may not have the HPD, but they'll get to know you. The real you, not the killer side of you."
"That's... Killer side of me?"
"Alyx. Thirteen. Armed. Men. Not to mention every other kill."
"Finn. I was the sniper on our team."
"I know. That's what I'm saying." Alyx's shoulders lower, and she sighs, suddenly seeming older and weary. Finn reaches and wraps an arm around her.
"Just think about it, okay?"
A few weeks pass, and like she said about the training officer, she put Alyx through hell. Yeah, sure, the Navy was brutal as hell, but in all things holy, this was ten times worse. She was given every grunt duty listed in the book, the dirtiest calls, and everything else. Not to mention it felt like everyone was ready to pull out their gun and shoot her when her back was turned. Every night, she would have enough energy left to take a shower and then she would crash on her bed. She would pretty much only eat breakfast in the morning, and whatever she could snack in the day.
To say the least, Steve was pissed.
Of course he wasn't about to march down and give them a piece of his mind, because only Captain Kei knew their actual relation. His mood reflected his actions. He was always so broody and they didn't want to ask many questions.
Steve was a little late to work one morning, so during his absence, they all convened to talk things over.
"From what I hear in HPD, Alyx is not being treated well." Lou says. "I've tried getting them to ease up, but they refuse and ignore me."
"Yeah, it's not going very well for her." Junior sighs. "I haven't had a single conversation with her since she started."
"HPD is very family oriented, but they can turn on someone just as quickly. Trust me." Danny says. "Chin went through it, Kono went through it, I went through it." They all sigh.
"Do you think Alyx will be okay?"
"She can handle herself, but..." Everyone looks at each other unsure.
"Man, what are we going to do?"
