chapter 20: things you said on the phone at 4 am
"I just wanted to hear your voice," Jay said quietly. "I miss you." His voice was thick with exhaustion, something Evie was learning to be familiar with as they were miles apart from each other.
She fought a yawn and giggled, "You're so cheesy, baby." And he chuckled with her too, simply pleased to hear her laugh. After a beat of silence, "I miss you too." In the quiet of the night, more somber than she wanted it to come out. "Only a few more days, yeah?"
"Yeah. Only a few more days." He says, and her heart continues to ache.
Tourney expeditions didn't usually take as long, but severe weather conditions postponed their matches, extending their stay, thus extending their time apart. And while Evie knew time apart was always good for people in love, she couldn't help but resent it.
She can hear the drowsiness in his voice, she knows he has trouble sleeping without her, that too much away from her brings back the nightmares.
She whispers out a goodnight, and he responds in kind. The phone call continues and she listens as his breathing deepens, feeling the tightness in her chest loosen as well.
