Author's Note: I've been trying to write a Jupiter Ascending fanfiction for years. I am captivated by the possibilities, but the universe is not very fleshed out, leading to my complete paralysis. I decided I needed to sit down and actually TRY to write something and this is what I came up with.
Please don't judge the story until you read Chapter 2. Looking back Chapter 1 is CRAP! I tried to jam a ton of set up and information into this Chapter and it's so dang clunky :(
Please let me know if this sounds like something that I should try to continue.
Shout out to VR Trakowski for having the most amazing Jupiter Ascending fanfiction called Rise. I am a mega fan and you should go check it out. I hope I can write half so well a story.
Enjoy!
Chapter 1: Yorin 8
Jupiter leaned on the balcony just off her bedroom at her alcazar on Yorin 8. The view was not as spectacular as Kalique's alcazar. No waterfalls tumbled away past her new home and the architecture was not quite as open or airy. Where Kalique's home had reminded Jupiter of a Mediterranean villa, this place reminded her of a medieval castle.
The purpose of this alcazar was not beauty, but security. It was nestled into a woodland valley surrounded by mountains. Any hostile ship trying to approach would come under fire from several outposts throughout the mountain range. Stinger assured her this was the best place to come into her power. Later she could move to a more fashionable estate.
Jupiter moved into the alcazar on Yorin 8 after returning her family safely to Earth. She understood when Stinger explained that she could not stay there without bringing danger to her family. Already they had been kidnapped and almost killed! She arranged for the little grey keepers to fake her death and scrub any trace of her scent from their lives. Any tracker trying to trace her would not be led to them any longer.
One of the hardest things she had ever had to do was watch from a distance as they mourned her. Her own heart was heavy with grief at being separated from her family. For so many years Jupiter longed to break out on her own and experience the world, but it hadn't really dawned on her what she would lose in the process.
Above she could just make out the two patrol ships that hovered overhead, keeping watch. Stinger had insisted on the maximum precautions when it came to her safety. Balem may have been dealt with but that did not mean an end to her enemies. They were only likely to be more discreet and cautious. No one would underestimate her now and that only made her enemies more dangerous. Jupiter had the estate and name to become one of the most powerful people in the Empire which was bound to ruffle a few feathers.
The evening hours like this were the hardest for Jupiter. Her days were filled with tutors, training, meetings, and some social engagements but the evenings were her own. She often found herself, as now, on her balcony, looking over the forest and up into the mountains. Left to her own thoughts, the sadness and loneliness settled in. Here she had no friends or peers. Stinger was the closest thing she had but he kept himself rigid in his role as her security advisor. Jupiter did feel affection for the man, but he simply did not know how to breach his training and treat her as anything other than his queen.
Tomorrow. Tomorrow Caine and Kiza would arrive on Yorin 8. It had been months since she had seen either of them and both were missed dearly. They had gone to Orus together under her orders but she wished that they could have stayed close. Caine was needed on site to vet and train her close guard because Stinger needed to stay with her. Kiza had been catching up on the news and happenings in the Empire and sending tutors to help Jupiter adjust to her new role.
Kiza was a sort of cultural ambassador. Her role would be to guide Jupiter through social interactions, making sure she was not inadvertently rude. Playing the part of an Entitled perfectly would help Jupiter consolidate her powerbase more quickly and she needed all the help she could get.
With a sigh, Jupiter retreated into her bedroom. She crawled onto the bed with a tablet and began to read the Entitled code again. It had become a nightly habit. The code governed virtually all interactions in the Empire and if she was bound by it, so were others. Somehow, she would learn to use the code as a weapon and she would find a way to be with Caine, if that is what he wanted too.
