Chapter 10: Weapons (Nelifical)
It was another early start. We all seemed pretty excited about this class. Today we would be taught all about weapons. Even Rowan appeared to be less disdainful than usual and that was saying something.
Hurriedly, we ate our breakfast before heading to the sandpit arena. I guess as we were testing weapons we'd need a large place for it. It being in Vacuo of course there would be plenty of sand. There was no escaping it.
Standing on a podium was a tall woman with her long dark hair tied in a braid. Her face broke into a broad smile as she saw all the seats quickly filled with students. The sunlight gleamed off her bright yellow outfit. She wore a tight yellow top with a short brown jacket and combat style cargo shorts. Two small curved swords were holstered to her belt at either side.
"Good morning class! I'm Professor Rowena Sunnybrook. Sunny by name, sunny by nature! We may inhabit arguably the most inhospitable part of Remnant but that doesn't mean we can't do our best to make life easier for ourselves. For instance, this class is scheduled for the earliest part of the day to ensure we're not caught out by the unforgiving sun."
She smiled broadly.
"When it comes to weapons, everyone has their own unique style. Some prefer to get up close and personal with Grimm while others opt to defeat their enemies from a distance. You there"
She pointed at me. Why couldn't she have chosen someone else. Nervously and after an encouraging pat on the back from Bo, I stood up.
"What's your name newbie?"
"N-N-nelifical I-i-i-t-t-o." I stammered.
"Please come up here so the whole class can observe your weapon of choice."
I awkwardly lumbered over various students and very nearly fell over when pinch-face tripped me. In the blink of an eye, I felt a tail wrap around my leg to steady me. Rowan discreetly returned to the shadows after that. I still couldn't understand her.
After what had seemed an age, I managed to reach the podium. With shaking hands, I passed my sniper rifle, which I called Steady shot to Professor Sunnybrook. She temporarily seemed weighed down by the gun, but swiftly recovered. She gently caressed the weapon, feeling every nook and cranny. She nodded at me.
"Very impressive. Do you get a good range from this?"
"Y-y-yes I can reach over 100m p-p-providing that conditions are good. It's im-m-p-portant to c-c-concentrate hard when aiming. By veering too much to one side, you not only miss but loose the element of s-s-surprise."
"Well explained Nelifical. You can go back to your seat."
I returned as quickly as I could. Professor Sunnybrook spent the rest of the lesson bringing several students up to show and explain their weapons before we got target practice. She explained we would do this for a few weeks before trying it out with actual Grimm then looking at ways to improve our weapons. She was certainly very jovial even when she overheard pinch-face saying her hair look stupid. She replied that looks didn't matter; the only thing that mattered in the real world was knowing how to handle yourself. I understood that all too well.
