I sat at the desk, my head in my hand so that my thumb and middle finger rested on a temple moving in small circles. I thought I was getting over him. Sure, I still felt bad about erasing his memory, but I was confident that I could do this job without being distracted. All he had to do was walk through the double doors into the hospital and everything I had worked at moving past these last three years came in with him. He wasn't even nice! It was almost like he was saying things just to get under my skin. I moved my fingers from my forehead to the bridge of my nose between my eyes and squeezed.
"AHAAAA!" A voice yelled from the doorway into Madam Pomfrey's office.
I jabbed myself in the eye and jerked my head up, startled. There stood my brother Sean.
"Mum said you were going to be here!" He said, striding confidently into the office. "Why didn't you tell me?"
I held my hand over my streaming eye. "I figured she would. I didn't have much notice and I had arrangements to make and papers to get in order."
"So your favorite little brother doesn't get to know you're here?" He asked with a fake pout.
I wiped my eye with the back of my hand and smirked. "I'm sure mum told Louis I was going to be here, too."
Sean clutched his chest as though he was mortally wounded. He straightened back up in a moment and said, "Anything exciting happen yet?"
"I couldn't tell you if it had." I said. "Though, we both know if anything had happened the entire school would already know."
Sean shrugged and sat lazily in the chair on the other side of the desk. He sat for a while staring at me.
"What?"
"It's weird that the school is trusting you to treat students." He said with a shrug.
"Something we can both agree on." Said a deep voice.
My head snapped to the door and Sean jumped out of his seat. There is the doorway stood Snape, clutching the vials of potion that had broken now refilled.
"I didn't realize social hour was in your job description." He sneered.
"He's my brother." I said, standing from my chair.
"Sean Winston," He said, eyebrows raising. "Of course, how could I not have seen it before. You have your sister's temper."
Sean scowled at him.
"You have escaped her obnoxious hair, though." He said.
"The only obnoxious thing here is you, professor." Sean spat.
"Sean!" I scolded.
"There's that temper." He said. "Ten points from Gryffindor."
"Why do you act like you're always looking for a fight?" I asked Severus. "He is my brother and a student and I say he is allowed to be here. Ten points for Gryffindor."
Snape scoffed. "He disrespected me. Twenty points from Gryffindor."
"You deserved it." I said, "Twenty points for Gryffindor."
"You're brother has to learn some respect. Thirty points from Gryffindor."
"You need to learn not to be such an ass!" I said, walking in between Sean and Severus. "Thirty points for Gryffindor and thirty points from Slytherin!"
"You can't take points from me!" He snarled.
"I'm sure there was something you didn't punish one of your students for." I said between clenched teeth.
"Fifty points from Ravenclaw!" He yelled.
"I'M NOT IN RAVENCLAW!" I shouted to be louder than he was.
He was redder in the face than I had ever seen him. His lips were pursed and turning white. "Detention, Winston."
"You can't give me…" I started shouting.
"Sean Winston." Severus cut me off. "Every Saturday for the rest of the year!"
"You can't do that!" I said. Sean was standing very silent behind me.
"I am a teacher and Head of Slytherin House." He spat, walking past me. He slammed the bottles of potions down on the desk. He spun around to face me. "I think you'll find that I can."
I watched his robes float around the corner and he was gone.
"I wish you wouldn't have done that." Sean said. "No one would have noticed ten points missing and now I am going to miss the spring trip to Hogsmeade."
"I'm sorry," i sighed. "I'll talk to him."
"No!" He yelped. "If you talk to him I might end up with detention every Saturday for the rest of my life. It's okay. I have next year."
Sean hung his head and walked gloomily from the office. I made a note to beg Severus for some leniency with Sean's detentions but I was certain that it would not improve anything.
The next few days passed fairly quickly with not much excitement. There was a student in bed who had lost the bones in her right leg from a poorly performed jelly legs jinx. She was under the influence of sleeping draught while the Skele-gro did its painful work. I could hear the soft moans drifting through the office door. I thought back to when I first came here almost a month ago and how nervous I was. I now felt like I had been doing this forever and nothing could phase me. The students of Hogwarts certainly keep things lively with the array of injuries that seem to happen.
"Miss Winston." A familiar voice spoke.
I lifted my head to look and there in the doorway stood Professor Dumbledore. My stomach engulfed my heart as it sank.
"I did not mean to startle you." He said as he took a step inside the office. "I apologize that it has taken me this long to visit you."
"S'alright." I mumbled.
"I hear you and Severus have already had a little spat." He smiled and there was a glimmer in his eye. "He stormed into my office a few days ago wanting to know if I had been confunded. Apparently only someone whose brains have been addled would allow you to take over for Madam Pomfrey."
His placid smile remained on his face.
"I shouldn't have…" I began.
Dumbledore shook his head. "There is no need for apologies. I believe the argument was just as much Severus' fault as yours. He has been a bit more agitated these last few years."
I was sitting with the only person in the school who knew of mine and Severus' past. I was still bitter that he had asked me to end it and I didn't appreciate him talking about Severus as if all we had was a slight accquantainship. I knew Severus very well. I knew his temper and propensity to allow it to control what he said and did. I wasn't sure what things he retained after I obliviated him but I knew from his treatment of me that it was nothing good. I wondered if obliviation could create poor memories. I could not remember doing anything that would cause this kind of animosity towards me. These thoughts all whipped through my head and all I could do was nod my head once to show I had understood Dumbledore.
"Don't let him get to you." Said Dumbledore, turning to leave. "If you should need anything just let me know."
"Oh," He added. "I was able to get Severus to settle for taking ten points from Gryffindor and no Saturday detentions for Sean. It would be a shame for him to miss a Hogsmeade weekend, especially since this is his first year being able to go. Not everyone has enough knowledge of the school to be able to go there whenever they have a whim."
He winked with a smile before he turned the corner to go.
