X-Men: Fate

Phantom Phoenix Rising

Phantom Phoenix wanted Jean, and they planned to get her.

Leon's entire life he'd searched for his purpose. When he discovered he was a mutant, he left home from his small Podunk town full of people who wanted nothing to do with them: mutants. The Dark Phoenix and Bastion events didn't help matters.

During the Bastion event, Leon ran into and met Aimi, but he didn't join her until he found her again and she invited him into the Brotherhood.

After the Dark Phoenix event, the Brotherhood suffered losses. There was much grief. Soon after, leadership changed hands. However, its purpose, for the most part, stayed the same. Mutants needed protection from humans, especially Purifiers. When Rogue took over, their purpose expanded.

Rogue was a bit enigmatic, much like Magneto, but she clearly cared about everyone, even the people who seemed to annoy her. No one seemed to mind her arrival. This became even more abundantly clear when she told them the reason she would be the Brotherhood's next leader: the return of Magneto.

Everyone was all ears, except Psylocke and Lupita, who came with Rogue.

In time, everyone became privy to what those three had already known. How would Rogue return Magneto to the Brotherhood: to life? She would do it with Jean, but as Rogue and Psylocke told him, specifically The Phoenix.

The fact that The Phoenix still existed had both angered and scared Leon. He remembered the footage and clips of the destruction and chaos she brought, but the power intrigued him. He wondered what it would be like to have no fear but also to be able to take care of people: protect them and help them.

Now, Leon had bargained with The Phoenix. He didn't mind letting it have its revenge, inhabiting his body, or even having the majority control of his mind and body: as long as it did what Rogue asked. It was required to help revive the dead the Brotherhood had lost. Having Jean wasn't absolutely necessary, but it was better to have her than not in order to be successful in their endeavor.

"Jean was never so inviting," The Phoenix had told him during their earlier exchange.

Leon wasn't exactly sure he could trust it, and it knew this. It entered into the deal.

Surprisingly, they worked together well. They decided to stop the X-Men, even though The Phoenix wanted to destroy the mansion and the innocents inside to do it. He wanted the X-Men not to hinder their cause. He didn't want innocents to die; it knew that.

The arrival of the three new X-Men recruits Leon appreciated. They saved the mansion. However, he and The Phoenix were going to work together and stop them. This new trio would not keep them from the work that needed to be done.

With Leon's power magnified by The Phoenix, The Phantom Phoenix astral projected three versions of himself toward the X-Men recruits, and he channeled all three into each of the recruits' minds.

The Phantom Phoenix planned to rid itself of all these pests, and when all her protection, friends, and family were gone Jean would be broken to the point she would willingly give herself over to them. She had been comatose for so long she was in no condition to fight back, and after everything she'd gone through she'd be unable to recover from fresh trauma and heart break. It knew Jean so well.

Reva and Adrian were going to drop to the ground, but they didn't, even though they had gone unconscious.

Reth fell to a knee, but he didn't fall unconscious.
