It was night time, Rain was pouring down heavily on the empty streets of Konoha that night. A man, who wore nothing but a thin blue shirt and black joggers ran desperately down the terrace, his breathing becoming heavier and heavier with each step he took. He didn't know for how long he had been running for but it felt like hours, upon hours. His black eyes darted to the sides every few seconds and he constantly looked over his shoulder afraid that they would find him before he got to his destination. "I have to, I have to get there." He gritted his teeth and forced himself to keep running even though his legs were screaming for him to stop.
Shikamaru slow down a little! Yelled ino, who was a few feet away from him. They had been studying at her house discussing a crime case when his cellphone had suddenly rung. He answered and heard a very worried kurenai over the phone. "Shikamaru, something is wrong with Asuma. He's been acting strange the whole week and today he ran out of the house like a mad man telling me to call my mother and to stay with her until he comes back. I'm very worried that something might happen to him!" She cried. Shikamaru assured her that he would go out to search for him and to not worry but the truth is he himself was worried about Asuma. He too had noticed the mans strange behavior every time he went to visit him and kurenai. He always seemed to be lost in his thoughts or staying up late at night to look through files at the police station and do research on his computer. (Asuma what have you gotten yourself into) he asked himself.
Ino had no idea what was going on. All she knew was that Shikamaru had startled her when he stood up abruptly and ran out the door. She knew the person on the phone was Kurenai because he had mentioned her name during the phone call. Had something happened to her? Or maybe… she shook her head, eyes focused on the man who ran down the streets like there was no tomorrow. "Shikamaru what's going on?!" He suddenly stopped and she bumped into his back.
He turned around to face her " ino, you shouldn't have followed me." He grabbed her by the shoulders and looked her in the eyes. "You should go back, it's not safe out here at night."
Her green eyes watched as the rain dripped down from his hair, down to his cheeks and down to his white thin shirt that stuck to his abs tightly. She huffed and turned her face to the side, hoping he didn't notice her blushing face. "Shikamaru Nara, you should know that I'm a stubborn woman that never listens to others orders." she placed a hand on her hip and gave him a defiant look "troublesome woman" she grinned, knowing it was the end of the conversation. "So, Who are we looking for again? Is it Asuma?" She asked, trying to tie her long wet hair.
He nodded. "Kurenia told me he ran out of the house in a hurry without telling her where he was heading to. I don't understand what's gotten into him."
The blonde was a bit shaken by the loud sound of thunder. She stood in silence for a while and then her eyes widened a bit. "Wait a minute… I recall him saying he would be going on this radio show thing this week to talk about something serious and that it would probably end up with him being killed. I thought he was joking at the time but-"
Shikamaru grabbed the side of her arms, shaking her lightly. "the radio talk show, do you remember what it was called?!"
She frowned. "Unfortunately, I don't remember him ever telling me what the name was. But I heard there was one near Felsen street. If we split up maybe we can-"
"No, let's go there together." He knew how scared she was of thunder whenever she was alone. He couldn't let her go by herself even though she was acting brave right now.
she nodded. "Alright, let's not waste any more time then." They both started to run again, their footsteps splashing through the puddles of water down the street.
"Haaa- haa" he wasn't going to make it. He rubbed the knee that he hurt falling down a while ago.
He shook his head stubbornly. this sacrifice cant be for nothing. Up ahead, he could see a phone booth. Yes, that was it. If he couldn't make it on time he would just say it over the phone even if it was a risky move. He took a deep breath and made a run for the booth. He dragged his injured leg until he reached the phone. He rummaged through his pockets, taking out a few coins and inserting them in the booth. "Come on, pick up" he muttered impatiently.
A few seconds later a man with a deep voice answered. "Asuma? Where are you? We're about to go live."
"Listen, I won't be able to make it in time but I can just say it through the phone right now. But please don't use my real name or my real voice."
"Don't worry my friend I got you covered. just stay on the line while we make a quick introduction so you can say what you want."
Asuma looked around, the constant fear of someone following him kept him on edge. "okay… " he could hear the man introducing himself and his friend next to him (come on hurry up, my time is ticking like a bomb.)
"And now ladies and gentlemen I present to you Leo, an ex-government employer who has some juicy information for everyone to hear. Leo, will you let us in on it?" He asked the man on the phone.
Asuma didn't waste any time and quickly got to the point. "yes, like you just stated I have been working for the government for over 4 years now and let me tell you these people are a bunch of liars, schemers and murderers!" For some reason his hands started to tremble (it's not the time to be scared, he told himself.) "These monsters," have an agenda and they show it right in your face all the time since they know people have been dumbed down to not earth is just a prison, a spiritual battle. We are nothing but cattle being groomed to later be disposed of. They want to throw your soul to hell and they're willing to do whatever it takes. This place is controlled by them and if you refuse to disobey their rules they can kill you in a blink of an eye and make it look like an accident. They've had everything planned since the beginning. what's to come… oh god, all those innocent-" he choked up a sob. "Everyone has to know the truth. Madara is a farse!" There was so much he had to say but hesitation took over. Would anyone believe him? Or will he become a laughing stock like all the others before him. They would surely think he was mentally ill. They wouldn't believe him without evidence. no, even if he did show them proof they would think it's fake. He placed a hand on his head.
"Asuma!" He looked up at the shadow running towards him and for a second he felt like they had found him. He sighed in relief and held the phone away so nobody could hear him. "Shikamaru, what are you- he never got to finish his sentence as he felt something hard strike his abdomen. He grabbed his stomach as blood started to ooze out. He lifted his hand up to his face, it was covered in dark red liquid. He let out a dry laugh ("They finally found me, hu?") He told himself as he looked at shikamaru and ino's terrified expression. He wanted to tell them to run away, that it was dangerous to be near him but another gunshot was heard and once again, he felt the pain throughout his entire body. but this time the bullet hit near his chest. his eyes widened as he grabbed onto his wound, due to the intense pain. His hand let go of the phone as he fell to the floor, gasping for air that he felt was leaving his lungs.
"Asumaaaa!" Yelled shikamaru as he ran towards him.
Ino watched as a masked man hid behind a building aimed for shikamaru and as fast as she could, she pushed shikamaru onto the floor, the bullet grazing her shoulder by an inch . "Ack!" She rolled off of him and onto the wet floor holding on to her shoulder.
"Ino!" He glared at the masked guy who had turned around to leave (dammit, if only he had brought a gun with him. He was a policeman for crying out loud!) He was about to pick her up but she stood up herself. " I'm fine, but Asuma!" They quickly ran to him, kneeling down to help him. Shikamaru lifted his upper body in his arms, "Asuma, Asuma."
The blonde got her cell phone out and dialed the number for an ambulance. Her fingers trembled as she tried to quickly press the numbers. She grabbed onto asuma's hand as she gave the paramedics the street address. "Just hold on a little, You're gonna be ok" She assured him. the inner corner of her eyes filling up with tears.
"Wha-what are you guys doing here?" He asked in a hoarse voice.
"Kurenai called asking for us to look for you. but don't worry, the ambulance is on their way." He said, trying to cover the man's bleeding wounds.
"Shikamaru… Listen" He looked up at the young man that looked about ready to cry at any moment. He knew, just like him, that he wasn't going to make it. "P-please p-promise to take c-care of kurenai and the b-baby for me." He grabbed onto the young man's shirt lightly. He had always seen shikamaru as his own son and knew he could entrust him to take care of kurenai.
Shikamaru shook his head vigorously. "You can take care of them once you get treated. you don't need me, everything will go back to normal once you…." His eyes widened, watching as the man coughed up blood.
He gave ino, who had her head hung low a wry smile "don't be sad I c-can finally return t-to where I belong too."
She looked up at him with her crying eyes. "What are you talking about! You belong here with us! We need you! so please!"
"I… we were never meant to be here." He looked up at the sky, small droplets of rain fell onto his face but he couldn't seem to feel them anymore. "g-god will you forgive me for all of my sins? I'm sorry f-for all the wrong I've done." He whispered. His voice fading into a small smile as the shine of life in his eyes began to dull out slowly.
Shikamaru's hands trembled as he watched Asuma give out his last breath. No, he wasn't dead, he couldn't… "Asuma, Asuma wake up! he yelled in a shaky voice. "WAKE UP DAMMIT!" He shook his shoulders, clenching his teeth as tears fell from his eyes.
"Shikamaru stop! He's gone!" Cried ino, still holding on to Asuma's cold hand. She could faintly hear the sound of the ambulance sirens up ahead. she wanted to turn around to look but her vision became hazy all of a sudden. "oh, yeah" she looked down at her bleeding arm. someone was calling her name but she couldn't respond because her body had gone numb and all she could see was the blurry image of shikamaru as her consciousness slipped away.
She walked down the hallways hurriedly, her light pink hair swaying back and forth as she took step after step. She could see the nurses bustling around entering room by room, grabbing equipment and attending to their patients. she held onto her clipboard tightly, her heart was beating rather rapidly. It had been quite a while since she had last seen him. Was he doing well? Last she heard of him he had been in the exact same hospital a few times but she was never lucky enough to attend him. Her lips turned into a small frown. "Why do you keep risking your life like this?" she whispered. She stopped at the patient's room. she took a deep breath as she knocked on the door twice before entering. "Hi, my name is Sakura and I will be attending you today. she smiled and closed the door behind her. Her green eyes focused on the man in front of her. He had definitely changed. He was much taller, he looked built and his jawline looked as sharp as a knife and his black spiky hairstyle seemed a bit different. The only thing that remained the same was that expression on his face…
"Sakura" The sound of his voice and the look of his deep black eyes made her heart skip a beat. Her hands trembled. not because she was scared but because she was nervous. "It's been such a long time that I thought you wouldn't remember me anymore." she said, heading over to the computer screen to type down his information.
He stayed silent as she smiled and took out medical supplies from the cabinet. She looked more mature and composed. She no longer resembled that lovesick girl from middle school who followed him around and always wanted to be with him, or the teenage girl from high school who had no confidence and was always insecure about herself.
"Could you please, take off your shirt so I can check your wounds." she looked away as he lifted his shirt off. Why was she feeling embarrassed? (He's a patient Sakura, get a hold of yourself!) She walked up to him, once he had finished and took a look at his chest. "It doesn't look like anything serious, I will disinfect it and bandage it up for you. As she began to disinfect his wound she could feel him staring at her intently. (This tension is killing me!) she told herself. Maybe, a small conversation would distract both of them. "So how long have you been working as a policeman? "
"Three years." He could feel the warmth of her hand on his chest as she applied some type of ointment, it made him feel a bit… "uncomfortable".
She had forgotten he was a man of few words. "I'm surprised you choose this type of career, I had always thought you would study for business and work along with your br-"
"I don't want to talk about him." He said with a cold stare.
She pursed her lips, were those rumors from back then true? Had Itachi killed or hired someone to get rid of the Uchiha family to inherit everything? But why would someone ever do something as cruel as that? she looked up at the man in front of her, her mouth opened and closed but her voice wouldn't come out. she wanted to ask but she knew she had no right to do so. They were nothing but strangers now. "Sorry" she stood up. "Your wound should heal in a week or two but in the meantime please make sure to apply this ointment every night." She handed it to him, their fingers touching for a brief second. "Please be more careful, I don't want to see you coming here too often if you keep on getting hurt."
A nurse suddenly barged in without even knocking, startling the pink-haired medic. "Miss sakura, I was told to inform you that ino Yamanaka and shikamaru Nara are in room 112" She handed the concerned pink-haired medic the clipboard containing the patient's condition. "Don't worry, they're fine."
Sakura nodded, "I'll be right over." the nurse nodded and excused herself but not before looking at the shirtless sasuke and blushing.
Ah, she had also forgotten he was a lady killer. His looks attracted a lot of attention. If he would've become a model or actor he would have been super famous. She turned around to face the black-haired man. "Well, that will be all for today Mr. Uchiha. She took out a business card from her pocket and handed it to him. If you have any questions please don't hesitate in calling me or coming to see a doctor."
He looked at the card in her hands before reaching out to grab it. He noticed her hands were slightly trembling. Was she scared of him? Or was she nervous after seeing him again?
"Well then, I will be heading out then. It was nice seeing you again." she gave him a small smile before walking out.
He outstretched his hand and opened his mouth to call out to her but he stopped himself. What was he doing?! He let his hand fall to his side. He promised not to see or get near her again after what itachi had done to his family. He couldn't run the risk of putting her in danger too. He looked down at the business card she had given him. "I can't lose you too." He crumbled the card in his hand and stuffed it in his pocket. He put his shirt back on and walked out of the hospital.
Sakura gently removed the blonde-haired girl's wet strands of hair from her face. She watched as she inhaled and exhaled softly. She's ok, she's breathing, and her heart is still beating, she told herself. Ino was her only younger sister. they had grown up together and had decided to live together until one of them got married off. "what happened?" She asked shikamaru who was holding onto the blonde's hand, his head hanging low to cover the fact that he had been crying. He raised his head a bit. "We got a call from Kurenai. She was worried about Asuma who had run out of the house so I went out to look for him and I didn't notice ino was following me until we were a few miles away from home. We found Asuma and then a masked guy appeared out of nowhere and... He lowered his head again as he choked out a sob. "I'm a policeman and I couldn't even protect them!" He yelled angrily.
She patted his back, trying to calm him down. "Hey, no matter how strong someone is you can't always save everyone, you're not a superhero, you're a human."
He stayed silent, shaking his head as if denying her words.
"You should go home and change or you'll end up getting sick. I'll take care of Ino and call you whenever she wakes up."
He gently squeezed the blonde's hand. He didn't want to leave her alone after everything that had transpired. Sakura seemed to have read his mind. "I'm going to stay here, nobody is going to hurt her in this place so don't worry." she assured him. He nodded and let go of the blonde's hand. "I'll be back soon." he glanced at ino one more time before walking out.
the pink haired girl looked over at the blonde. "And you said he didn't care at all about you." she said in a low voice, as she patted the sleeping girl's head.
A drunk middle-aged man staggered out of the bar with a bottle of beer in his hand. "I'll be seeing you beautiful ladies next week!" he yelled, waving and throwing a kiss at the hostess. some of them giggled and waved back at him and some of them just gave him a look of disgust. He looked down at the damp concrete floor. "hu, I didn't even realize it had been raining." He mumbled as he began his walk down the dark streets. He had been used to this type of life. He wrote books for a living. He wasn't famous but he earned a fair amount of money which he ended up spending half of it at hostess clubs.
He hated being at home. It reminded him of how lonely he was. He knew many people, yet he felt like nobody cared about him. He wasn't afraid of anything or anyone. The only thing he was truly afraid of was dying and leaving his adopted son alone. "What a shitty life you have, Jiraiya." he gulped down the remaining of the beer and tossed it at a dumpster near an alley. He missed and the bottle rolled down the floor and stopped near someone's… he squinted his eyes, were those feet? Had they killed someone and left them there? Or maybe it was somebody homeless. He walked up to the person and kneeled down to see them better. His eyes widened, "Tsunade?!"
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
