A Hero's Worth
Summary: Is a hero really only judged by their quirk? Their worth determined at birth based on a few genetic traits? Everyone seemed to think so, her own mother included, too bad for her that her daughter was born quirkless... Even so Kagome Higurshi refuses to be labeled as useless, she will prove to everyone that the worth of a hero is not based on one thing alone.
Pairing: Kagome/Overhaul
Chapter One
Dark blue eyes shifted from the papers in her hand towards the loud shout of her younger brother. "Look it's All Might!" The hero worship was clear to see as he pointed excitedly at the TV an All Might figure locked in his chubby hand as their mother smiled sweetly at him.
"I see Souta." She shared an amused smile with her husband Souta wiggled in his seat at the table. Kagome wanted to roll her eyes, if she had watched TV while sitting at the table when she was younger she would have no doubt been scolded but not Souta.
No, the boy could do no wrong.
Guilt churned in her stomach at her dark thoughts, it wasn't his fault their parents favored him over her. Who wouldn't? She was just a quirkless nobody, Souta was only six but already his quirk was flaring to life. He, like his father, would no doubt have sway over water and ice due their mother's own quirk. While neither of their parents were pro heros their quirks were strong and allowed them a life of luxury.
Souta would never want for anything, unlike her. She had to fight for whatever scraps her parents deemed her worthy of. Here she was fifteen years old and trying to gather the courage to ask her mother to sign papers that would allow her to apply to the nearby hero high school.
Tearing her gaze from Souta's excited figure she gazed at the TV, her shocking blue eyes locking on the pair on the TV. There he stood tall and proud, his muscles bulging as he effortlessly held up a wall so the civilians around him could get to safety.
"Have no fear for I am here!" His signature line made her brother squeal as he slid from his chair to plaster his face to the TV making their parents laugh at his childish antics.
Clearing her throat she felt it contract as her mother's dull brown eyes settled on her, barely hidden disgust floating in the now cold gaze. "A-ah mama can you please sign these papers." Holding them out she resisted the urge to fidget as her step father slid his gaze over to her for a brief second before dismissing her as nothing.
Ku Loon Higurashi gave a snort as she read over the papers in her hands, what a waste of time. Crumpling them up she let them fall to the table ignoring the flash of hurt in her daughters blue eyes. Eyes that were just like his, yet she was nothing like the number one pro hero. No she was a mistake, a quirkless nothing. Had she known All Might would not pass on his quirk to the child she had tricked him into siring she might have not have wasted her time trying to get close to him all those years ago.
"What's the point of applying to a hero school, you will never be a hero without a quirk." Her voice was cold as if she was reading a menu and not crushing her daughter's dream, again. When would the girl get it through her head that without a quirk she was nothing. She should just accept that she would never be a hero and just settle for whatever mundane office job she could land given her 'condition'.
Kai Higurashi bit back the sigh that wanted to spill from his lips, his mood now sour. He hated when this happened, while he understood his wife's disappointment he could never get over the amount of sheer distaste if not misplaced rage the young girl was subjected to. Yet it was not his place to say or do anything, she was not his daughter. She had been five when he had met Ku Loon Saitomi, she was a single mom doing her best to raise and care for a child that had been dumped on her.
The father was MIA, presumingly he had dipped out after learning their child was quirkless. It had only proved to him what a strong woman Ku Loon was, and after months of dating her had decided to make her his wife. Even being so nice as to let her daughter take on his last name. It wasn't as influential as pro heros but it held some weight and would no doubt help her secure a job that was better than anything she could get on her own.
"Ku Loon, she could always try to be support." He bit back a wince as she turned her furious cold gaze on him. He hated when she looked at him like that and she only did it the few times he had tried sticking up for Kagome. Sighing as his back bone caved in on itself he averted his gaze. "Or not..."
Ku Loon gave a huff as she turned back to her daughter hurt, churning in her deep blue eyes, eyes that only served to anger her more. Why hadn't her plan to produce a powerful child bore fruit, instead she was stuck with this useless welp and the damn girl had the gall to want for things that were clearly never going to be within her reach.
"Go to your room. I'm tired of looking at you. Don't come back out until you've decided which quirkless school you want to go to." Her voice was cold and detached, as if dismissing the family dog.
Kagome bit her lip and left the room, her heart hurting. She just wanted to do something with her life, just because she was Quirkless didn't make her any less of a human than the rest of the world.
Kagome felt determination go through her, she would show everyone that Quirkless wasn't a bad thing...that ones like her could be anything they wanted...as long as they put the hard work in.
