Brom sat by the campfire, warming his hands from the cool mountain air as he watched the sunrise. The landscape before him was one of breathtaking beauty. A peaceful river flowed through a lush green valley far below, and beyond that, tall, jagged snowcapped peaks arose sharply from the landscape, creating a spectacular spectacle. Brom watched as clouds gently drifted past the mountain peaks. The old Rider felt a sense of peace he had not felt in a very long time. Before he could continue to admire the landscape, the rushing whoosh of wings caught his attention and a large cyan form swooped down from the sky, passing overhead. Brom smiled as he watched Saphira spread her wings and circle around before landing with a soft thud on the cliff in front of him. With cyan scales that sparkled like a tropical sea, and eyes as blue as a summer sky, Saphira was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
Good morning, Dear One! Saphira greeted her Rider, her voice gentle and full of energy. I was wondering when you'd awaken.
Brom chuckled.
"I'm old now, Saphira. Old people tend to sleep longer." He said with a smile. "How was your hunt?"
It went very well. I caught two dear that weren't very fast runners. Saphira replied.
Saphira circled around behind him and gently lied down, and Brom leaned back against her side, enjoying the warmth of her scales. Separated by death for nearly a century, they had escaped The Void together and found themselves on a strange, unknown continent. Still, Brom wasn't worried. As long as he and Saphira had one another, he had nothing to fear. He would enjoy his time alone with the partner-of-his-heart-and-mind.
Saphira bent her head down so that she was eye-to-eye with her Rider.
We really should tell your son that we're alive, Dear One. I would like very much to meet him and the dragon who shares my name.
"I know." Brom replied in barely a whisper. "And they would certainly like to meet you. I just…"
Brom's voice trailed off.
"I don't know how to face him." He finally said.
Whatever you decided to do, I'll be there with you, Brom. Saphira said as she gently nuzzled her Rider's forehead with her snout.
Brom smiled a bit and continued.
"We've both suffered so much… sacrificed so much… And we had so little time together the last time. I feel like we've earned the right to spend some time alone together, Just the two of us."
Saphira hummed and nodded.
I see, Brom. You're right. After Vroengard and the Forsworn... and Morzan... and...
Saphira's voice trailed off.
"Besides, I thought we were trying to find Razinir." Brom added.
I know. But I still want to meet your son as well. Saphira said somberly.
"We will right one wrong at a time, Saphira. Razinir will be overjoyed to see you."
Saphira gave a subtle nod.
I'll be happy to see him too.
"Eragon can wait a little longer."
You're right, I suppose. Besides, Eragon would probably have quite a few questions when he sees us."
Brom smirked.
"The boy always has a lot of questions, Saphira."
Saphira leg out a snort of laughter, sending a cloud of black smoke into the air.
So he's just like you then!
Brom laughed and leaned back against Saphira's side once more, gazing up at the blue sky.
"Sure. A lot. Anyway, Galbatorix is gone. There is no need to rush to return."
Very well, Brom. So what mischief should we get into today? Saphira asked, her eyes bright as always.
Brom turned his gaze toward the west.
"I say we head deeper into the mountains. We can keep exploring."
Brom smiled warmly at the partner-of-his-heart-and-ming.
"This will be that grand adventure we always talked about when we were younger."
Very well. Let's go, my friend! Saphira exclaimed, standing up.
Brom extinguished the fire, attached his saddle to Saphira, and climbed up n her back.
"Alright, let's go, Saphira!" Brom shouted excitedly.
Saphira bugled triumphantly and launched herself into the sky as they continued their adventure.
To be continued…
This is a preview for another story I'm planning to write eventually. Don't lie. You wanted to see them get a happy ending. As for how they escaped The Void and what other adventures they'll have, that will be addressed when I get around to writing the actual story.
