I do not own Digimon or anything associated with it.
This may or may not be a one shot. I have ideas for this story, but I am also happy to end it right here.
The dynamic between Mimi and Sora has changed so much since becoming "adults". Mimi used to drag Sora to all the parties she got invited to. If Mimi was going you bet your ass Sora would be there too. Then when they got to university Sora would be the one dragging Mimi to all the places. Sora having gone into fashion and Mimi deciding to study culinary arts. They had spent the last 4 years (in Sora's case, 3 in Mimi's) focussed solely on their studies. They will soon be going their separate ways. Next week Sora will be moving to Tokyo to study under one of the best designers in Japan and Mimi would have left for her year in Florence. She found a job in one of their top restaurants as a dishwasher, she absolutely hated the thought but she knew if she wanted to be successful, she would have to work her way up.
Throughout the last four years Sora dragged Mimi to every party, so she could observe the latest trends. It was also fun for her to hear her friend complain about not wanting to go to parties and wanting to study instead. Tonight the decision to go out and party was a mutual one. They both wanted to celebrate the years of hard work they put into getting their degrees. Mimi stared at her closet, she felt anxious, she always did before she went out. She took a sip of red wine and continued to stare at her closet.
"You know," Sora said as she walked into Mimi's room, "staring at your clothes won't make an outfit magically appear."
"I wasn't staring." She took another sip of her wine. Seeing Sora eye her, she sighed. "Okay fine so maybe I was." She got up from her bed and walked to her closet. "It's just that I want everything to be perfect. I want to walk into that club and have the best night of my life," she pulled out a dress and looked at it, "with my best friend."
"I know you do." Sora said and walked over to Mimi. She pulled out some outfits for Mimi to look at. "It feels like so much more than just the end of our university careers."
"It feels like the end of my most important relationship." She finally settled on an outfit and threw it on the bed. Sora just gave her a look and smiled. She went to her room and got changed. Two hours later and they were ready to go.
They decided to go to the first fast food place they could find, to load up on some carbs, they wanted to get absolutely wasted but not immediately.
"I am going to miss our apartment." Sora said, taking a bite of her hamburger. "The apartment I found in Tokyo is so much smaller, but it is a roof over my head."
"That is true." Mimi nodded. "I am moving into my parent's apartment in Florence." She took a sip of her milkshake. "I know it is a stupid thing to complain about, but the apartment we shared, we paid for. I felt so independent. Now I feel like I am going back to relying on my parents to get me by."
"Meems, it is a stupid thing to complain about. Your parents just want you to be okay." she smiled at her. "This way you don't have to worry about rent. You can spend your money traveling through Europe and meeting cute boys on your days off."
"That is true." She smiled and said, "I heard Spanish men look really good in suits."
Matt and Tai had known each other since childhood. They had spent their days dreaming of achieving their goals. Since childhood Tai's dream was always the same: to become one of the best soccer players the world has ever seen. Matt had spent his life dreaming of becoming a rockstar. His band was very popular amongst teenagers and young adults. He found a way to balance his time well. Studying at university for his degree in engineering, to get his father off his back, relaxing enough to have some sort of a social life and band practice.
They decided to celebrate Tai getting drafted into an Italian soccer team. Matt's band was on track for going on tour around Japan. They were on track for their futures, but tonight they would forget about all the responsibility and just be young for a change.
They were at their favorite pizza place. They would come here whenever they had the chance, share a pizza and drink a couple of beers. It was also how they started any night of partying.
"I just don't want my sister to date a dude like him. He has too much energy and acts way too immature. It's like he doesn't take anything seriously." Tai ran a hand through his untamable hair.
"What you're saying is, you don't want her to spend her time with someone like you." Matt laughed at his friend.
"I am not like that." he said stubbornly.
"You used to be. There were only two things you were ever serious about and that is: soccer and your family." Matt deadpanned.
"Are you sure we can't set her up with your brother?"
"Dude, TK's only love right now is writing."
"At least he has something he is passionate about." Tai said, finishing his beer.
"Davis does, too." He smiled slyly. "Your sister."
"You suck." Tai said as they paid for their food and left for the club.
Mimi and Sora were enjoying their time on the dance floor. The DJ played all the songs they were crazy about. Dancing is one of the things that helped them keep it together over the years. Overwhelmed with all the work you have to do? Dance it out! Passed one of the worst courses you ever had? Dance it out! Boyfriend acted like an asshole? Dance it out! Boyfriend cheated on you? Get drunk, cry and dance it out! Tonight they were dancing because they stayed strong.
After all the dancing and way too many tequila sunrises Mimi needed a bathroom break. When she reached Sora again they decided to spend the rest of the night at their favorite bar. It always had some sports game on the tv which pleased Sora and they always played music, which pleased Mimi. They ordered fries and more drinks for their table and spoke about all the different kinds of drunk people. When a man with unruly hair walked up to their table.
"Hey, my friend and I were hoping to play beer pong but we need two more." He said with a dazzling smile. "Would you like to join us?"
Sora smiled at him, "you won't get much of a game out of us. We are way too drunk."
"Sora!" Mimi said with a giggle. "He is cute, don't say no."
"Listen to your friend, Sora." He smiled down at her.
"Oh all right, but I have to warn you, I am VERY competitive." Sora said.
"That's okay," there's that smile again. "So am I."
"Seeing as you are competitive and I am competitive." he extended his hand towards Mimi "I will just have to have a non-competitive person as my partner." he bowed as Mimi took his hand. "Milady."
Mimi giggled and 'whispered' to Sora, "He is cute. You should take him."
"Okay, Meems" Sora, who was always better at handling her alcohol, placated. "I will keep him if you stop yelling." Mimi just nodded and mouthed okay.
Matt noticed her immediately when she walked, more like drunkenly swayed, into the bar. Her arm hooked into her friend's as she laughed at whatever her friend said. He watched as they walked over to an empty table close to where he was sitting. Putting their stuff down on the table. Her brown hair falling over her shoulders as she bent forward to pick up her phone when she dropped it on the floor.
"Dude, stop staring and go talk to her." Tai's voice demanded his attention.
"I am not staring, I am observing." Matt said, turning his attention back to Tai.
"I wouldn't mind 'observing' the redhead a little closer."
"Then go invite them to play beer pong with us." Matt said.
Normally Tai would protest but he decided he wanted to mess with Matt a little. So he walked confidently over to the girls and invited them to play beer pong with him and Matt. Knowing full well Matt wanted to get to know the Brunette better he decided to make her his partner for this game.
Mimi looked up at Tai, eyeing him suspiciously.
"What?" he asked uncomfortably. She just shook her head and smiled up at him.
"Nothing." She laughed. "I think I need water. Also, you are going to drink all the beer."
"No problem, Ma'am" he said as she walked towards the bar to get a bottle of water.
Matt turned to Sora looking at her. Her hair was a unique shade of red, something you don't see often and eyed her body, yup she was definitely athletic, no doubt about that. There was something very appealing about this girl.
"I'm Matt." He said as he took his place next to her at the table.
"Sora." She said smiling up at him. "Your friend over there seems to be full of self-confidence."
"He always is."
"Well then let's teach him a lesson." She says as she sends a ball over to the other team. "Mimi has no aim and she's drunk. She will be useless." She made eye contact with Tai and they both threw the balls, neither of them getting a cup.
Next it was Mimi and Matt's turn, both throwing a ball. Mimi's ball bounced off a cup and Matt's landed in the middle cup, thus the beer pong war started. Both Sora and Tai showing their competitive side. Matt wasn't as competitive but he was definitely trying to win and Mimi was talking up Sora to Tai.
What feels like hours later they ended up with one cup each. "Losers have to buy winners their next drink." Tai said with a cocky smile. Sora and Matt exchanged looks and nodded.
"Fine!" Matt responded.
"Remember both players have to make it."
"We know the rules."
Matt went first. He aimed and they all watched as the ball bounced off of the cup. "Damn it"
Next was Sora's turn. Aiming carefully she made it in.
Tai decided to go next. He aimed for the cup and made it in. Mimi looked at Tai and saw the fire in his eyes, she looked at the other two at the opposite end, she was sober enough to know what was at stake, also Tai had kept to his word and he was her knight, drinking all the beers she didn't want to.
She knew it was a long shot. She sucked at aiming, but she threw the ball anyway. It landed in the cup making them the winners.
"What?!" she said out of pure shock. Next thing she knew Tai picked her up and spun her around. She closed her eyes, knowing if she opened them she would surely throw up.
"Waoh!" she said, eyes still closed. "You are spinning a very drunk girl, who might puke on you." That caught Tai's attention and he set her down.
"You know, if it weren't for me leaving this country, I think we would be best friends."
"That's a shame…" Mimi said, finally opening her eyes to look at him. "I was hoping you and my friend over there could get together." She leaned closer to him, "I think you two would look good together."
They looked over at Sora and Matt who was still waiting in a long line. "Do you like sports?" Mimi asked suddenly.
"Yeah, I am a soccer player." He said. "I am actually moving to Rome next week to play professionally."
Mimi nodded at this not listening anymore. "I am going to tell them to just get me water. Be right back." She got up and walked over to Matt and Sora. "Sora, can you go keep him company?" Mimi asked, looking at her friend. "He keeps talking about sport and you know how that bores me."
"Mimi, it wouldn't kill you to at least try and listen to what he has to say." Sora said, shaking her head at her friend.
"Yeah, but how rude would it be to pretend I am interested in what he has to say?" Mimi shot back at her friend at which Sora just looked at her and smiled.
"Fine, I'll go." Sora said and left the line, leaving Mimi and Matt alone.
"Do you really find my friend boring?" Matt asked as the line to the bar moved a little.
"No. I just think they will hit it off." Mimi said smiling up at him. "And you're cute. I would like to get to know you better." she said with a flirty smile.
"I thought you were supposed to be drunk." Matt said as they finally reached the bar.
"Your friend drank all my drinks for me, I have sobered up a bit."
Matt ordered their drinks and they moved over for the people behind them to order their drinks. "Does that mean you're always this forward."
"Only when I think the thing I want is it worth it."
"Wow." Matt said as he got their drinks. The two walked over to the table to find Sora and Tai staring deeply into each other's eyes, talking about the thing that connects them; their love for sports.
"Ahem" Mimi cleared her throat and set Sora's drink in front of her. The two moved apart and two minutes later Sora was very tired and Tai did the gentlemanly thing and offered to escort her home.
Matt and Mimi decided to stay behind and chat. It is such a nice night, Mimi felt like going for a walk and asked Matt to go with her.
"Tonight was the last night Sora and I could spend time together." Mimi said as she and Matt left the bar. "She is moving to Tokyo and I am moving to Europe."
"What will you be doing there?"
"I have a dream of being a chef and I want some experiences in different countries before I come back and settle down."
"So, you're not planning on meeting someone falling in love, getting married and belonging to some European country?" Matt asked teasingly.
"No. I would much rather go for blond Japanese guys with the bluest eyes I have ever seen." She quipped back. "With their own band that creates music so amazing that it makes me wish I knew what they were thinking when they were writing their songs. Which is very rare, I might add" she smiled, looking up at him. She had done that so many times during their walk but a wave fear struck her. Fear that if she didn't kiss this man right now, she would regret it.
It was like he could read her mind because the next thing she knew, his lips were on hers and she would be lying if she said she didn't hear all the fireworks and felt electricity starting from where his lips were touching hers traveling to her toes and back to her lips. When the kiss ended it felt like it lasted a second and an eternity all at once. When he pulled away it took her a second before she realized she should open her eyes. When she finally opened them he was looking down at her. Smiled the sexiest smile she had ever seen muttered something that sounded like damn and kissed her again. When they pulled apart for the second time that night Mimi knew that she wanted to be with him for a while longer.
"Why didn't you tell me you knew who I was?" Matt asked.
"I thought you would know. You are famous after all. There aren't many people who don't know who you are."
"People from that bar don't. I am a regular there."
"Me too!" she said a little too excitedly and smiled brightly up at him. "I think I am way too excited about this." She cleared her throat.
"Is your friend a nice guy?" Mimi asked after a few moments of silence. "He will be nice to my friend right?"
"He is now." Matt said as they reached a river. He walked towards a bench and sat down.
"Good" she looked around. "Don't you think it's weird, having this conversation in the middle of the street?"
"It is a very empty street." he looked around. "If you want, we can go to that coffee shop over there."
She nodded and he took her hand and led her to the coffee shop. They each sat with a cup of tea, you know way too early morning to allow any caffeine into their bodies. They spoke about their dreams and what they want for their futures, both realizing that this is most likely the first and last time they would see each other. When they finished their tea and their talk, the sun was rising. They definitely did not want to say goodbye, but they had to get back to their lives and think of this night as a chance encounter, what they discovered from what they want from their futures is that it was headed in different directions and that this night gave them the fuel they needed to pursue it.
"Have a good life, Mimi" Matt said in front of the shop.
"You too, Matt."
He pulled her closer to him, and gave her another kiss that felt like it stopped time and for a moment it was just them. When it ended they both went their separate ways.
