Beck: Wok Star

Beck was worried about Jade when she told him that the school didn't want her play. He knew that Jade had put a lot of effort into it and it was important to her because it was about a relationship between father and daughter. When he met Robbie on his search for Jade, he asked him to help him find Jade and thankfully he did. In the end he shouldn't have been surprised that she was in the janitor's closet, cutting up a trash can. When Jade was just angry she let it out by cutting things up, if she couldn't scream at the person who made her angry. Beck was almost glad when Tori, more or less willingly, offered to find someone who would sponsor Jade's play. He would have given his girlfriend the money if he had it, but his savings weren't even close to the money that she needed for her play.

The same evening he took Jade out to dinner to distract her from her anger. Of course they could have gone with the rest of the group to the restaurant Tori had suggest, but Beck knew his girlfriend preferred to be alone with him for now. During the evening Jade's mood brightened a little but he could see that she was still disappointed. He understood her. They both wrote scripts for plays and were passionate about them and not getting the chance to perform them was disappointing. Jade had let him read her script before anyone else and had asked for his honest opinion. They both did that when one of them wrote a script, because they valued each others thoughts. After reading it he had immediately recognized the plot about the relationship between father and daughter. It was very subtle except for the final scene, but Beck knew that his girlfriend had included it because of her own rocky relationship with her father.

When they were back in his RV, Beck didn't disagree when Jade demanded that they would watch The Scissoring, even though they probably had already seen it over a hundred times. The movie always put Jade in a better mood when she had a particularly bad day and he would do anything to make her feel better. During the movie Jade's phone rang and she answered it annoyed, but while speaking to the person on the other end she suddenly began to smile. That confused Beck, because normally Jade hated being interrupted while watching her favorite movie. The moment Jade hung up she excitedly told Beck that Tori had found someone who would sponsor her play. Little did they know that this was the beginning of new problems.

It didn't surprise Beck as much as it did everyone else that it was Cat who came up with the idea that Mrs. Lee just shouldn't be there for the premier. When it came to things that Cat was passionate about she had good ideas and she cared deeply for her best friend. Now they only needed to plan the distraction and Jade would be able to perform her play how she wanted it.

Of course Beck was sad that he couldn't see Jade's play in her version, but he had asked Sinjin to record it for him. This way he could not only see it, but Jade had it on video as a memory of her first own produced play as well. After Mrs. Lee had left they acted as if Trina had recovered quickly and left the restaurant. They arrived just in time for Beck to see Mr. West leaving the theater. Beck had never liked the man with the cold expression and especially not after having seen the video Robbie had given him after the Robarazzi accident. He couldn't detect if Jade's father had liked the play, but he would make sure to ask his girlfriend about it later.

When he and the rest of the group entered the small theater they saw Jade and Mrs. Lee argue. It looked like she had found out that her daughter hadn't been starring in the play this evening and clearly she wasn't very happy about it. Beck could only hope that it would turn out alright and Mrs. Lee would just accept that her daughter would play in the upcoming performances.

Jade: Wok Star

Jade had written Well Wishes after a particular bad fight with her father. It was very subtle, but it was about her relationship with her father and the end of the play was her wish how it should be. The play meant so much to her that she was even more disappointed when the school didn't want it. Seeing that, she was even willing to take Tori's help to sponsor the play. When Vega called her and told her that she got a sponsor Jade felt grateful towards Tori for the second time. This was her chance to show her father that her dreams weren't worthless and that art wasn't something useless. Maybe he would be able to pick up the underlying message of her play and finally see that he had to change something about his relationship to her. Excited that her play would be performed, she went over to her father's house the next day.

Ringing the doorbell she felt nervous. It wasn't the first time that she had told him about a play and every time her father had refused to come. However this time it was her own play that would be shown, so maybe he would come this time. She knew it was almost hopeless that her father gave her a chance and would come to watch it, but she still had to try. Deep down, and she cursed herself for it, she wanted his approval. Despite that he was an awful father and she hated him for what he kept telling her about her relationship with Beck, he was her father and she wanted for him to be proud of her.

She was pulled out of her thoughts when her father opened the front door. Believe it or not but even her father didn't work on Saturday mornings. Without a word he gestured for her to come in, probably wondering why she didn't just use the key he had given her. Sure, she could have, but she wanted for him to take the time to ask her what she wanted. When he only looked at her when they sat down on the couch together she took that as her cue to explain why she was here.

"I wrote a script and I'm going to perform it in a small theater." That was as far as she would go with her invitation. Her father clearly had to know the meaning behind her words. She saw her father frown and prepared herself for yet another rejection, but his next words surprised her.

"Fine I'll come, but only because you came to my engagement party. I need to return the favor."

Jade bit her lip to keep herself from smiling and just nodded.

"I'll tell you the place and time of the premiere." With that she stood up and left, knowing that this was as good as it would get. She didn't care why he was coming, only that he was. Maybe he would finally see her passion for art and realize that her dreams weren't stupid. Now she only had to make sure that everything would be perfect.

Of course she didn't have such luck. Mrs. Lee, the sponsor Vega had found for her play, ruined everything. She turned her meaningful play into a joke and even cutting up another trash can in the janitor's closet didn't help lessen her anger about it. When she told Tori about why the play needed to be perfect she didn't seemed to understand her. However when Vega, with the help of the others, distracted Mrs. Lee she had to admit that maybe she understood her after all. Just maybe Tori wasn't as annoying as she had thought.

Her father's words felt good and maybe their relationship would get be a little bit better. Jade didn't fool herself, only because he praised her didn't mean that they wouldn't fight in the future, because she was sure they would. However maybe he had a little more respect for her art now.

When Mrs. Lee arrived and found out that her daughter didn't get to play her role, Jade's happiness dimmed slightly. This woman was demanding. Jade was sure that she wouldn't go down without a fight and she should be right. Mrs. Lee told her that she wanted her money back in two weeks. This was awful for two reasons. One because they had booked the theater for two more performances and they wouldn't let her out of the contract and second because she didn't know how she could pay Mrs. Lee back.

The theater had made her a good price for the rent and Sinjin had made the scenery for free, so her calculations for the amount of money they would need had been too high, but it was still a lot of money. Sure, she still had the money from the Diddly-Bops performance and from her role in the movie, but it wasn't enough to fully pay back Mrs. Lee. Beck offered her that he could give her the money from his big break, but Jade didn't want to take it. Her mom also offered to lend her money, but Jade wanted to do this on her own. Two weeks to get so much money wasn't long, so she immediately looked for a job on short notice. Thankfully in Hollywood they always needed talented people. A restaurant, similar to the one they always visited once a year as a fake ping pong team, offered Jade that she could sing there for five evenings a week. Then she also worked at a coffee shop for two weeks early in the morning and after school. If she had to work on something that wasn't art related she thought that she might as well be surrounded with something that she loved and that was coffee.

When the two weeks were up Jade was absolutely exhausted, but it was worth it. The other two performances were played in her version as well, which earned a little bit of money too. Now that she could pay Mrs. Lee back it was really her own play and she couldn't be more proud of it.
