Four months later. Gintoki lies in bed, staring at the ceiling. He looks to his left, seeing the empty spot next to him. Even though Sonata did not sleep next to him every night, she would always come into his room, sit on his bed and wake him up by smacking him on the chest. It's been quiet all the time now. He misses the way she told him to get off his lazy ass. He couldn't tell himself that she was dead. In his mind, she disappeared, and that one day, she will come back. Four months came and gone, and still no sight of Sonata.
Gintoki sighed, then rolled out of bed. He walks towards the door and slides it open. He looks down to see Ginharu and Gintosu sitting in front of his door. He stares at them for a minute, then smiles. He picks them up. "What are you two doing up early, huh?" He tickles them. The twins laugh and move around. "Come on, breakfast time." He puts them up on his shoulders while making airplane noises. The twins can not walk yet, but they can stand up for a few minutes, then fall back down. After feeding them, he got them ready, then took them downstairs to see Otose.
The door opens. "Hey. Watch my kids." She looks his way. "Say it nicely next time, you ass. Hand the kids to me. Hello Ginharu, Gintosu." She kisses them on the cheek. The twins giggle. "Need time alone again?" He nods. "Yeah. I need to think for a while. Don't worry about me. I'm fine." He smiles. "How are the twins dealing with not having Sonata?" Gintoki sigh. "Alright, I guess. They would say mommy once in a while, then hold her picture up to me."
"And what do you tell them?"
"Never forget her. Papa will be back." He pokes their cheeks, then walks towards the door. Otose stares at him. "Gintoki." He stood in the doorway. "It's alright to be upset. I know you miss her. The twins do too. But it's not good to keep all that anger inside." Gintoki looks back at her.
"What anger? I'm fine, old lady. So don't worry about me, alright?" Gintoki leaves the shop, then goes back to his apartment. Otose sighed, then looked down at the twins. "Why is your father so stubborn?" The twins look at each other.
Gintoki sat on the couch while staring at a picture of Sonata. He sighs, then puts his head down. Kagura and Shinpachi walk into Otose shop. "Hey, Otose. Where's Gin-San?" Shinpachi asked. "Upstairs being depressed again. He says he's alright, but I know he's lying. He refuses to talk about how he's feeling."
"Gintoki has always been like that. But this is different. Sonata is dead. I don't know what's going through his mind right now. I wish we could do something."
"His brain turned to mush after Sonata... You know. He won't eat any parfaits or go to the Snack Smile. He won't gamble or act like an idiot with me threw the city. Three women's wanted to talk to him yesterday. Three women! And you know what happened? He turned them down! But do you want to know the worst part? He won't read any jump manga." Everyone gasps at Kagura's statement.
"This not like him," Otose said. There was a knock on the door. "Hi, everyone," Lena said. They waved and said hello. "Where's Gintoki?"
"Upstairs depressed," Shipachi said. "He's upset like me, huh? It's been four months. Somehow I just can't let it go."
"How are you holding up?" Otose asked. "I'm doing good a little. I can't believe she's gone." Lena wipes a tear from her the corner of her eye. "I miss her so much. Ginharu and Gintosu is the only piece I have left of her. Can I spend some time with them for a while?"
"Sure. Gintoki will not be upset. They are your nephews." Lena picks up the twins. "Hi… How are you two today?" They smile and kiss their Aunt on the cheek. "They remind me so much of my sister."
"How? They look like Gin-chan." Kagura said. Lena stares at them. "Well, they only have her dark eyes and some of her black hair. But her DNA still runs through them. And a little of her personality. I will be back." She leaves the shop. Upstairs, Gintoki fell asleep on the couch with Sonata's picture in his hand. His door slides open, then closes shut. He jumps up and looks around. "Sonata?" He looks towards the door. "Sorry, Gin-San," Shinpachi said. Gintoki sighed, then turned away from them. "Gin, have been up here all morning. It's time to come out of hiding and gets some air. How about something sweet from the cake shop?" Kagura suggested. "No."
"Come downstairs and stop looking so angry." Gintoki gives them the death glare. "I'm not angry. So shut up and leave me alone. Can't you see I'm in pain?" Gintoki turns away again. "Gin-San. We understand how you feel. Kagura and I lost family. We know it's only been four months, but we think you need to talk to someone about how you feel."
"I DON'T NEED TO TALK TO ANYONE ABOUT HOW I FEEL!" Kagura and Shinpachi back up. "Just-Just leave me alone." They stood up and went back down to Otose's shop. Gintoki grabs her picture and stares at it. "I'm so sorry, Sonata."
"How is he?" Otose asked. "Not good," Kagura replied. Ten minutes later, Gintoki walks in, then goes straight to his children. "Thanks for watching them." He picks his kids up and starts playing with them. "Are you feeling alright?" Otose asked. "I'm fine." Otose looks at Kagura and Shinpachi. They are shaking their heads while mouthing he is not okay. Gintoki looks behind him to stare at Kagura and Shinpachi. They continue to act normal. "Lena came. She spends some time with the twins today."
Gin sigh. "Oh. I can't face her after I promise to find the twins and Sonata. I found her but, you know. I was too late."
Night came. The twins are asleep in the back room while Gintoki is at the bar trying to drink his depression away. Otose watches him pour more liquor. "Gintoki." He sighs, then gulps his drink. "What is it?" He looks annoyed. "It's been four months. So what are you going to do about your situation? You're not yourself anymore. You look gloomy as hell. You put on a smile for your kids but deep down, you are depressed and angry."
"I smile because I don't want my boys to be upset. And I'm not gloomy. I'm angry. I am pissed because when I find Masaya. I have to end him. So don't worry about me. I'm good."
"No, you're not." Gintoki slams his fist on the counter. "YOU'RE WRONG! I'm fine! I mean, what's wrong with all of you? You, Kagura, Shinpachi. What is it?! Do you want me to forget about her?!"
"I'm not telling you to forget about Sonata. My husband is dead. Do you think I forgot about him? I think about that man all the time. I am concerned about you, you idiot. You did not cry when we laid her to rest. It's not healthy to keep so much angry build up inside. I can tell you want to cry, but you don't want to look weak in front of your children." He sighed. "But if you need to let it out. Twins will not see you as weak. You are a person hurting because someone you cared for has died. You are not the only one who feels this way, Gintoki. Sonata's mother is heartbroken that she had to lay her child to rest. Her sister tears up when thinking about her, and I miss her. The twins are too small to understand, but I'm sure they miss her the most. Their mother is gone."
Gintoki put his head down. His hands begin to shake. "I know. It's all my fault."
"Don't blame yourself."
"When we argued here. Sonata told me she would vanish, and I will never see her again. What will I do then? Nothing but drink my sorrows away while I drowned in self-pity." He took another shot. "Sonata was right. Masaya was still after her. I should have stopped arguing with her and told her to stay. I was being so stupid! I was so angry at her. He waited for her to be alone to make his move." He sighed. "It's all my fault. I should have gone after that helicopter. I was too late when I finished my fight with Luke. She died already because I wasn't fast enough. Now she's gone." Gintoki laid his head down. Otose taps his shoulder. "Let it all out."
"It's all my fault! I was supposed to protect her, but I failed. Just like I almost failed that day when you were wounded. I thought I lost you that day Otose. I thought Sonata would have a pulse, but she didn't. All because I didn't take down Luke in time. WHY DIDN'T I GET THERE ON TIME?! SONATA! I'm so sorry, Sonata! Please forgive me."
