With Jerry holding Billy's hand, Jerry and Billy walked out into the backyard in broad daylight, however, Jerry had to admit, he was nervous, no forget nervous, he was frightened, frightened of being burned to ashes. Sure, he had borrowed the Gem of Amara from his sister, Regine, who was also a vampire, but he was still wary of whether it would work. Taking small steps into the yard, Jerry bit down on his lower lip and pleaded in his mind for him not to burst into flames. Jerry closed his eyes as Billy led Jerry further into the yard.
"Well?" Jerry asked. "Am I outside yet?"
Billy glanced at Jerry and laughed.
"Uh, yeah, Jerr, you can open your eyes now."
Jerry opened his eyes and saw his backyard illuminated by the bright, yellow sun. He heard birds chirping and a few flying in the air. He saw the cloud-free, blue sky, a sky that he hadn't seen in years, in decades, in centuries. Jerry smiled as he looked over at Billy.
"Wow, the last time I saw the sun was in 1619," Jerry said in a low voice. "ever since I became—what I am, I was always saddened that I'd never get to see another sunrise, another sunset, another day ever again."
"Now you can, and it's all thanks to Regine," Billy said.
"Yeah, but it's only for today," Jerry said. "Regine would rather yank her eye out than let me keep this."
Billy laughed. Jerry sighed. Hearing the phone ring, Billy sighed.
"What do you wanna bet that's Charley, saying he forgot something," Billy said. "Come on."
"No, I'm going to stay out here for a little bit before we get going to the graduation," Jerry said.
As Billy nodded, turned, and walked into the house, Jerry closed his eyes and inhaled the fresh morning air. It was an amazing smell to him, one that he missed for many, many years. After several seconds, Billy ran out of the house, panic filled in every corner of his face.
"Jerry! Jerry!" Billy yelled. "Jerry, that was a doctor from Summerlin Medical Center, Charley's been in an accident—"
"What?!" Jerry exclaimed with widened eyes.
"Yeah, come on!" Billy said with panic in his voice. "We gotta go!"
It took a good forty minutes for Billy and Jerry to arrive at Summerlin Medical Center, when Jerry rushed up to the nurse's desk, he felt as if he had, had a heart, it would've been skipping beats at that moment.
"Hi, I'm the guardian of Charley Brewster, how is he?" Jerry asked in a slightly shaky, panic filled voice.
A female nurse behind the desk looked up at him and displayed a sympathetic frown.
"I said, how is he?!" Jerry asked in a loud, sharp tone.
The nurse rushed over to a tall, bald, male doctor standing over by the counter. Jerry watched as the nurse and the doctor exchanged words before the doctor walked over to Jerry and touched his shoulder.
"How is he?" Jerry asked.
"Well, Mr. Dandridge, Charley suffered extensive damages from the car crash. His ribs are broken, his legs are broken, he suffered a severe concussion and he sustained massive brain injuries which has left him in a coma. Honestly, if he makes it through the night, I'd be surprised."
"Wow," Billy said in a low, breathy tone.
In silence, Jerry looked down and away from the doctor. To be honest, Jerry was too saddened to say anything. However, after a few seconds, Jerry swallowed hard and looked up at the doctor.
"May I go see him?" Jerry asked in a low voice.
The doctor frowned with a shake of his head.
"He's in a coma—"
"I don't care," Jerry said in a voice that was trying hard not to rise to anger.
"Room twenty-one, three doors down the hall, to your right," the doctor replied.
Jerry nodded and turned toward Billy but didn't look him in the eye, Jerry couldn't look him in the eye, not then.
"Get Amy and Ed here," Jerry replied, to which Billy nodded.

Walking in the room, Jerry stared at Charley, lying in the hospital bed with tubes hooked up to almost every part of him. He looked so weak, so pale, almost lifeless. Jerry knew that look, he could recognize it because it was the same look he had just moments before he became a vampire, years ago. Walking over to Charley's bed, Jerry pulled up a chair close to the bed and sat down. He took hold of Charley's hand and held it. Just staring at Charley, Jerry felt a wave of emotions rush up within him that he hadn't felt in centuries.
"This is something, huh, Charley?" Jerry said with a smile. "Just about a year ago, you and I absolutely hated each other, now, here I am and here you are—"
Jerry looked away as he felt water cloud his vision, he didn't know why it was happening until he remembered - tears. He was tearing up, which was something he hadn't done in decades. As Jerry wiped away his streaming tears, he closed his eyes and exhaled, trying to compose himself before looking back at Charley.
"You have to get through this, Charley," Jerry said. "You have a whole life in front of you. You were accepted to UCLA, you're going to go off and do great things, so just—hang on, okay?"
Jerry squeezed Charley's hand as more tears clouded his eyes.
"Just hang on, okay?" Jerry said in a low, almost tearful voice.
