"Struggles"

Takes place during Season 8

"Such a nice view," Fluttershy said as she gazed out over the horizon.

"Mm-hmm," Twilight Sparkle agreed with a nod for emphasis. "Even from here, Princess Celestia's work is stunning."

She then looked to her right. "I absolutely get why you choose this spot to sit at and watch every sunset, Godzilla."

Sitting next to the high, seaside ridge that the two pony mares sat on was none other than the emerald-scaled kaiju king himself. He continued to look out at the sight of the sun lowering from the sky. It almost looked as though it were somehow actually melting into the ocean itself despite all three characters knowing this was not really the case. Although, Godzilla did give a soft, almost pur-like growl and a slow nod of his head so as to acknowledge his much smaller companion.

"He says he's glad we're enjoying the sight," Fluttershy translated. "He had hoped we would appreciate it as much as he did or at least like it to some extent."

"No, Godzilla, it's great. It's a really great sight," Twilight Sparkle assured. She then looked back behind her. "Just like the rest of this island is. I understand completely why you chose it as your home. Besides being so beautiful, it's also really big. I mean, even bigger than I thought it would be. It makes perfect sense that you chose it as the spot where you would raise your kingdom of giants.

"... It was scary as Tartarus at first, the idea of being on an island full of giant mosnters. But then I remembered who some of them were. Specifically that they were some of my best friends. Now, it almost feels like a home away from home for me."

"Me too," Fluttershy said as she smiled up at Godzilla.

The king of the monsters looked down at his two pony friends and smiled brightly as they returned the expression in kind.

"I'm glad you're enjoying being away from me," Fluttershy said.

The yellow-coasted pegasus then gasped as she covered her mouth with her front hooves. At this, a questioning look crossed Godzilla's face. Fluttershy turned to Twilight Sparkle, only to see a concerned look on the princess of friendship's face.

"Godzilla, I'm sorry!" Fluttershy let out finally. "I swear I didn't meant to word it that way! I really am happy that you made a life here for yourself! Honest!"

Godzilla roared out, asking Fluttershy to tell him if there is any more he wished to say or if there actually was more meaning behind her words.

This made Fluttershy look down sorrowfully, to which Twilight Sparkle put a supportive hoof on her back. The element of kindness looked to her violet alicorn friend before letting out a sigh and turning back to Godzilla.

"It's kind of hard to pick a starting place, but I'll give it a shot," Fluttershy said. "I truly am happy you're making a life for yourself, Godzilla. At the same time, though, I can't help... I- I- I... I miss you. I miss you being closer to us. I miss you being more available to spend time with. True, you weren't always readily available as is. It would take you a bit sometimes to reach us. But you were still closer than you are now living on this island.

"It took us a long time to get here as it is. I am glad we came here. It's a beautiful place and you seem to be making it a good haven for all the other kaiju. ... But I still can't help missing the way things used to be. Times were simplier back then, in a way. So much has changed since then, though. So much changed and... I- I have a hard time accepting it. I used to be okay with change... for the most part. Still had some reservations, but overall, I was fine with things changing as they did.

"Then you changed. I changed. Our friendship changed. Life changed. Everything changed. Sometimes I wonder if it was for the better or not. Mostly because I miss the way things used to be. It wasn't always perfect, I know. But like I said, it was more simple. Things were easier to understand, cope with, and adapt to. Even the changes because they seemed so small and unthreatening."

For a moment, there was silence as Godzilla and Twilight Sparkle both took in everything Fluttershy had said. When the alicorn princess looked up to the kaiju king, he only had what appeared to be a contemplative expression on his face.

Godzilla then let out a short roar, which solicited an alarmed look from Fluttershy's face.

"No, not at all!" Fluttershy exclaimed. "Or... well... maybe a small part of me. Selfish as that sounds."

"What? Fluttershy, what did he say?" Twilight Sparkle asked.

"Well... basically, Godzilla's asking if I regret him becoming more indpendent," Fluttershy admitted. "If I regret him finding his own path, or even becoming friends with Anguirus and setting up her with him making this island their home. He also asked if his sparing the other kaiju he and Anguirus have fought and bringing them here to start his kingdom is part of that regret."

Fluttershy then looked up at Godzilla desperately as Twilight watched on.

"But I swear, Godzilla, more than not, I'm happy for you. You found your own place in the world and even managed to include creatures your own size in it. I just... wish I was able to be more a part of it. I wish that we could all be a part of it. Myself, Twilight, and the other ponies back home.

"Our lives together were so much fun... even though they also came with a lot of danger. Because of you being... well, you, though, it was always worth it. I was always able to get through it. We all did by playing to our strengths and working together."

"Now, it feels like a lot of that's gone," Fluttershy spoke on. "I know it isn't really. It's still there to some extent. A lot of other things have come up since then, though. Some that... worry me a little."

"Fluttershy... I understand exactly what you mean," Twilight Sparkle said. "So much has changed in my life as well. So much in what, in the grand scheme of things, hasn't been that long of a time. Yet, it still feels like years and years. I guess time's funny like that. It can feel like it's going too slow or too fast or both at the same time. Yet, in reality, time just moves as... time does. Not fast or slow, but as it's meant to go... Unless Discord is messing with time again, that is."

This solicited a small giggle from Fluttershy, enticing one from Twilight Sparkle as well before she went on. "Overall, though, changes and time moving on are all part of life. The best we can do is try to adapt to those changes... scary as they might be. Large as they might be, it really is best for us to try and roll with them and adapt the best we can. Whether we're able to not only adapt to the changes, but flatout conquer them... or just adapt enough to stay afloat. It's easier for some poni- Uh, creatures than others. Still, the best we can do is at least try."

"Yeah... I guess that makes sense," Fluttershy said. "You're right, Twilight. Still, I can't help but be worried about some of these... changes you've brought onto yourself, Godzilla."

Godzilla let out a soft roar, asking what his pink-maned friend meant.

"Well, for starters, just randomly showing up in the Land of the Rising Sun," Fluttershy said honestly. "Then the fact these other kaiju have suddenly started appearing all over Equestria causing all sorts of chaos... and yet you don't kill them. You do give them the fight of a lifetime, but you don't take their life like you had all the kaiju you fought before. You adopt them into your kingdom and say it's all part of your plan.

"Now, I'm not saying I actually want you to kill them. Not at all. That's not me and could never be me. The idea of something or someone, some other living being having to lose their life, especially in a fight for some goal... horrifies me. For as long as we've been doing this and dealing with situation where we might have to do... that, it always breaks my heart. I'm honestly amazed I've lasted in this... well, line of work, for lack of a better term. But still, it's surprising to me that you've been so lenient after being willing to take down so many kaiju before.

"I personally kind of like it and like the idea of you finding another way to deal with the kaiju. Especially since it gives you more friends. But, I think it would be best if you came straight out and said what your plan is to us at least. Some ponies are a little uncomfortable with some of your methods. They've accused you of being... well, a bit of a bully. Even tyrannical in the way you've handled the kaiju and got them to... well, bend the knee to you."

"Besides that," Twilight Sparkle interjected, "just you sparing kaiju is worrying folks. They think that it's possible that you and them could... you know... that... They think you could be planning some sort of hostile takeover or invasion or attack of some kind."

Godzilla gave a frustrated look as a low growl escaped his maw.

"We know that's not the case at all, Godzilla!" Twilight Sparkle said. "Yeah, us, all of our friends, we know better. Still, there are those outside our circle that have rasied concerns. We just want you to quell them with an official statement."

"Please, Godzilla," Fluttershy said with sincere compassion. "Just answer these complaints so we can let everyone know for certain what's going on here with you and all the kaiju."

At this, Godzilla huffed a little as he looked away. He then let out a growling bellow of frustration.

"We know you said you wanted to meet with the world's leader, Godzilla," Fluttershy said. "Or at least as many as you could reach. But it turns out it's more complicated than that."

Godzilla was let out several questioning growls in response.

"Well... this is gonna be hard for you to hear, Godzilla, but you need to," Twilight Sparkle said. "Most of the world leaders we got in touch with said they weren't willing to come here for a multitude of reasons. But most of them boiled down to they didn't think it was safe here and they don't trust us or you with a meeting here.

"We did manage to find some leaders who were willing to meet with you, though. Most of who were on good standing with Equestria as allies. But they said three months wasn't good enough notice. So, basically, we're your best bet right now to get out your word of what your plan is and what you hope to accomplish with it. I'm sorry that it's not what you wanted, Godzilla, but it's our only option."

Godzilla roared out in frustration as his eyes began to glow blue while similar flashes of light danced across his doral plates. This intially frightened Twilight and Fluttershy, but they managed to calm themselves upon remembering that Godzilla, as frightening as he could be, was still their friend. Because of that, despite his immense anger, it was only a moment later, after looking out at the sunset for a bit that Godzilla turned back to his two friends and nodded. This enticed smiles from both mares.

"Thank you, Godzilla honey," Fluttershy said.

"Be ready to translate, Fluttershy," Twilight Sparkle said as she used her magic to make a pen, ink, and a scroll appear in front of her.

"Got it," Fluttershy said.

The two ponies looked on as Godzilla roared. Fluttershy would translate and Twilight Sparkle wrote it all down.

"He says first off he doesn't take the complaints that he's being a bully seriously at all. He says it's silly and if anyone has a problem with his methods, he's perfectly fine with someone else trying to stop the kaiju their own way. He's the king of monsters. Giant monsters that can destroy us little creatures and everything we've ever built with ease. The majority of those he's met so far since coming to our world have seemed content with doing just that. He's trying to protect us and keep us from going into exitinction. That requires a strong hand of auhtority to keep them from running over us specifically.

"Because he's the king, he also needs to be authorative. He tries to offer them a chance to bend the knee willingly and forgoe a fight, but so far none of them have taken him up on it. Thus he's had to fight and force them to submit to his rule as the king. That's not being a bully or a tyrant in the realm of kaiju he's found. It's how they establish the pecking order, the foodchain, the line of command. Godzilla says he's in a position where he must establish his rule, his order, his throne, his crown. So, even if he steps aside and lets us deal with the kaiju, he knows we'll fail. He'll still come up afterward and deal with the kaiju once we have and the claims of him being a bully and a tyrant are revealed for the foolishness they were."

"Kind of emotional, isn't he?" Twilight Sparkle asked. "Then again, I can't say I blame him. Everyone's gotten on his case a lot lately. This probably isn't helping either. Making him explain himself."

Godzilla roars out again, to which Fluttershy translates.

"As far as showing up in places others feel he didn't belong, Godzilla says he was just exploring. Up until that time, he mostly stuck to Equestria and the ocean. He knows the world is bigger than that, especially after visiting Pony Tale Island. All he wanted was to see it. But he understands now he should have considered that there would be those that wouldn't take to him like we did. He had forgotten what predjudice against his kind felt like. He understands completely that it's because he's so big and scary, but it still hurts a little. It's part of what drove him to begin his kingdom here on this island. He wanted to be surrounded by those like him who would not shun and resent him... quite as much. He understands they still might a little because he's established that he's in charge.

"However, the main reason he established this realm was to prove to the world that kaiju can co-exist with what his subejcts call the little ones."

"I assume that's creatures like us?" Twilight Sparkle asks.

Godzilla roars out in reply.

"Because so many creatures are smaller than them, the kaiju have taken to referring to them all collectively as the little ones," Fluttershy translated. "He's trying to teach themt he differences between each species, but so far, they haven't been very receptive."

"Figures," Twilifht Sparkle said in response.

Godzilla then continued to roar, which Fluttershy was more than willing to translate.

"So, except for occasionally visiting Equestria, Godzilla says he'll mostly be staying on this island. He will swim around, but stay away, for the most part, from heavily inhabbited areas."

"Um... can we expect visits from any of your subjects at some point?" Twiight Sparkle asked nervously.

Godzilla tilted his head for a bit while letting out a low growl. The expression on his face seemed to convey frustration, which worried the much smaller ponies. Nonetheless, the massive kaiju let out a big huff of breath and roared on while Fluttershy translated.

"Eventually he would like to get his subjects to the point where they could stroll through Equestria peacefully and, most especially, safely so that us little ones aren't harmed. He knows they're not ready right now, but he hopes to get them to that point. Assuming, that is, if it's okay with all of us."

"Of course," Twilight Sparkle said. "I'll gladly help work out relationships between your budding kingdom and ours. I know Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Cadance would help us smooth out relations between Equestria and your kaiju. Like you said, it will take a while, but we're willing to go through it with you because it's worth the effort."

Godzilla nodded his head before letting out several low growls.

"He says thank you," Fluttershy said with a smile. "But, in the long run, what Godzilla's plans basically boil down to is starting his own kingdom, putting them in line, and making it to where kaiju and smaller creatures can live together in harmony. He knows for many reasons this won't be easy, but he's willing to deal with it so long as we're willing to support him on this and do it with him to an extent."

"I don't like speaking for the others, but I'm confident they would be willing to do this with you all the same," Twilight Sparkle said with a smile.

To this, Godzilla responded with a small smile before looking out at the horizon once more. Fluttershy and Twilight Sparkle took notice of the seemingly contemplative expression on Godzilla's face. The titanic kaiju, mighty as he was, even seemed like he had a glint of emotion in his eyes.

"Is there something else on your mind, Godzilla?" Twilight Sparkle asked.

Godzilla turned and looked down at his two small friends with what almost seemed like hesitation.

"You do have that look like you want to get something else off your chest," Fluttershy said.

At this, one of Godzilla's brows raised in confusion before he looked down at his chest while patting it down with one of his hands. This enticed some giggles of amusement from Twilight and Fluttershy,

"No, no, no, Godzilla, it's just an expression," Twilight Sparkle said. "It means you've been keeping something to yourself and part of you wants to talk about it but another part is afraid to for whatever reason."

Godzilla's face turned into a bit of a glare as he growled.

"He said he's not afraid of anything," Fluttershy translated.

"Then let us in on what's bothering you," Twilight Sparkle replied. "Please?"

Godzilla looked on for a bit before letting out a growling sigh and saying what's on his mind.

"He says it hasn't always been easy being... well, him," Fluttershy translated. "When he came into this life, he was completely unaware of how hard it would be. Had no idea whatsoever. Yet, even from a very young age, it seemed like the weight of the world was thrust upon him. So many forces wanted him and he thought he made the right call when he chose to go with his father. But then, life seemed to get all the harder aftewards.

"He was happy with his dad for a while. Both of them alone on their island home. ... And then life happened again and it kept on happening. He nearly died, lost his father, and was shunned by the world. Then he found us and for a moment he had clarity, friendship, a family, and then he had peace. But then, just like before the weight of the world came crashing down on him because of what he is. He's pretty sure most expect him to be able to carry that weight because of who he is and what he's been capable of thus far. Although he does know there are some who don't care and just want him gone. He can tell.

"The story of Godzilla's life seems to be hhim trying to find a place in the grand scheme of things, but it always seems to change. Sometimes in the harshest of ways. Sometimes he feels like the very universe itself has expectations of what he should be in addition to every living, sentient being having their own ideas of what that is or should be. He says it's honestly been draining trying to be what everyone wants him to be, what he thinks they want to be, what he thinks he needs to be, and what he wants to be. He feels trapped in all these expectations and deamandments, including the ones he's set for himself with this plan of his. ... All of it... makes it harder... to know who... who he's meant to be."

After all that, Godzilla stood up straight, surprisng his pony friends. They watched in alarm as Godzilla threw his arms back, lifted his head into the air, and roared out at the sky with all his might. Instantly, Twilight and Fluttershy covered their ears with their hooves, even whimpering a bit as the area shook. After four straight seconds, finally, Godzilla's high-pitched screech faded into the ending bellow all who knew the king of monsters had gotten used to. From there, Godzilla hung his head in emotional discourse, enticing sympathetic looks of pity from his pony friends.

"Godzilla?" Twilight Sparkle let out questioningly.

At this, the enormous saurian turned to his friend and let out a questioning growl.

"You're putting too much pressure on yourself," Twilight Sparkle said.

Godzilla roared out in response.

"He says to look at him," Fluttershy translated. "He's a god among mortals. He can take it."

"I know you think that you have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders because of what and who you are," Twilight Sparkle said. "But you really don't. Trying to could backfire and turn you into something you're not. Or something you don't want to be."

Godzilla roared a reply.

"But how does he know what he's supposed to be when they're so many expectations of what he's meant to be?" Fluttershy translated. "His words, not mine."

"That's the great thing about you, Godzilla," Twilight Sparkle said. "Up to a point, you can be anything that anyone wants or needs you to be. You're such a versatile individual. You've been so adaptive over the years and done so many things. A lot of them wonderful. But, you must not forget that you are such an adaptable character and can be so many things. If you forget that, you'll let all the changes and expectations mess with you just like what's happening right now.

"You're a great kaiju, Godzilla. You have great character. You can do so many things. That's why you must not let yourself get boxed in by anyone's expectations of you. Not even your own. Keep doing what you're doing. Trust in yourself. Trust in your friends. Trust in what you feel your own destiny is. Of course, all of this must be within reason, but I truly feel in my heart of hearts that you can figure out what that line to cross is. I believe in you, Godzilla."

"So do I," Fluttershy said with a smile. "Follow your heart and do what you think needs to be done. Because of who you are and what we've been through, I know it will ultimately be the right thing. Hopefully, in time, the rest of the world sees this too. I love you, Godzilla."

"I love you too," Twilight Sparkle added on.

At this, Godzilla smiled and let out a low growl of gratitude.

"You're welcome," Twilight and Fluttershy said at the same time.

This made them look in surprise before they laughed. They were cut off by the heavy, stomping footsteps of something big approaching. The trio of friends looked back to see Anguirus, Godzilla's second in command and best kaiju friend, coming out of the forest and onto the sandy shore the kaiju king stood upon. The quadrapedal kaiju let out a howling roar asking if everything was alright. Godzilla assured him it was all fine and that he was just talking with Twilight and Fluttershy. Anguirus spotted the two mares on the ledge next to Godzilla, enticing smiles and waves from them.

"Hi, Angy," they both said in unison.

The spiky shelled monster smiled and bowed his head before turning away and heading back into the confines of the island.

"Well, I think we'd better get going," Twilight Sparkle said. "This visit was nice, but we need to get back home to Equestria."

"Especially so we can get your word out to the world," Fluttershy said. "Can't exactly do it from here, even though I kind of wish we could. You really did pick a nice spot for you and the other monsters, Godzilla."

"Is there anything else you want to add before we leave?" Twilight Sparkle asked.

Godzilla nodded his head and started roaring for Fluttershy to translate.

"He says he respects that the rest of the world, for the most part, wants him away from their borders. If that's the case, however, they must also stay away from his and not try anything foolish to cause harm to him and the other kaiju. He claims this island as their sanctuary, their land, their soveirgn nation over which he will rule as king. In the name of Godzilla, king of the monsters, this realm shall now be known as Monster Island, now and forever."

"'Now and forever,'" Twilight Sparkle read out loud as she finished writing everything down. "Got it, big guy. We'll spread your word for all to here."

Godzilla roared out in reply, but what he said put a worrying look on Fluttershy's face.

"Oh, dear," Fluttershy said.

"What's wrong?" Twilight asked.

"He said thank you and to let everyone know that if anyone tries to harm him, his subjects, their land, or try to take it from them... there will be problems," Fluttershy said.

The princess of friendship's expression also grew worrisome. It was not helped any when she looked up and saw the hard, unfaltering scowl on Godzilla's face.

"Oh, Celestia," Twilight Sparkle let out. "Well... we'll all just have to do our best to see that it doesn't come to that."

Godzilla nodded his head in agreement before roaring goodbye to his friends.

"Bye-bye, Godzilla," Fluttershy said. "Please take care of yourself and everyone else here."

Godzilla nodded his head as he almost seemed to be purring ever so lightly as he smiled.

"Goodbye, Godzilla," Twilight Sparkle said. "We'll have to try and visit again. This was such a lot of fun. Or maybe you could grace us with another visit to Equestria soon?"

Godzilla roared his reply.

"He says we'll see," Fluttershy translated.

With that, the two winged pony mares took to the air and flew to the spot on the beach where they had landed Twilight's hotair balloon. Once they were inside its basket, Twilight turned up the heat, allowing the balloon to slowly lift up into the air, takin their attached basket with. The two ponies smiled and waved at the king of the monsters, who responded in kind. Godzilla never once took his eyes off the ponies and their balloon. He watched them go until they were out of his sight, which did not happen until long after he was out of theirs.

By the time that happened, the sun had finally set and the night sky filled with its stars and the moon no doubt raised by Luna. Godzilla would stare on at it for another several minutes or so contemplating his new role he had given himself, the purpose that he felt came with it, and if it was truly the right call. Although he still had a few doubts and reservations, the kind, encouraging words of his friends convinced him the goals he set were worth it overall in the long run. Thus, Godzilla, the king of the monsters, was able to stand tall and turn back as he walked into the new kingdom, his kingdom that he had made for himself and planed to rule over with pride.

So it's been a while. ... Years even. I'm sorry about that. Sorry I disappeared on you. I never meant to. Never meant to stop writing this series either. Not where I did at least. I had every intention of giving it a proper conclusions. But several things have happened while I was gone. Things that, at the beginning, pulled me away from this.

What are those things? Specifically, I got published. Yeah, an author by the name of Matt Dennion put out a call looking for authors to write short kaiju stories for an anthology book called ATTACK OF THE KAIJU Volume 1. He was looking to publish stories filled with all original content, non-fanfiction. So, I put my name out there and ended up getting the gig. From there, my writing career sort of took off. Since then, I've been writing short stories for an independent WILD HUNT PRESS. Been learning more about both the business and the artform of writing prose literature in the process.

Also started writing what's supposed to be my debut novel. A passion project that culminates in combining elements from several of the movies and TV shows I love the most. Despite that inspiration, it's still going to be all original content. No fanfiction at all.

With that in mind, what does that mean for the future of this series? Well... I don't know. I can't say for sure that it's dead because... well, I wrote this. Didn't really edit it well I admit. I was getting frustrated with the editing process and just decided to post it as is from the point I stopped editing since it may very well be the last story I ever post on this website. I was in a dark place when I wrote it and decided to sort of use it as a way to say what was on my mind at that point. You can probably hear some of it in Fluttershy's words I wrote for her.

Beyond that... I don't really want this series to be over without a proper conclusion. But at the same time, so much has changed about me. I don't really want to write fanfiction anymore. I've been happy and enjoying writing my original content. I love what I've written so far. Also... while I still have fond memories of my time watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic... I don't really love the show anymore. Not really a brony anymore either. I still watch the show on occasion for nostalgia's sake. Times when I remember how much I loved the show and its characters especially. But the connection I once had to it is gone. I don't want to be a mega-fan of it or go to any conventions for it. Anything like that. All of that is gone... mostly. There is some of it still there.

Still I'd hate to leave this series unfinished. Especially since I came up with an idea a few months ago for the end of it that really seemed like the best of both Godzilla and MLP. It would legit feel like the best mix and blends of a classic Godzilla movie with the... quirks of MLP: FIM mixed in. So is this goodbye? ... Let's just so for now it's... see ya later. Stay golden, beautiful people. This is the Writer of the Storm, signing off.
