Take it easy, the world is hard enough. Have fun reading if it's your first time here. If you're a returning reader, much has changed, because I'm a lot older returning to this story (22June2022).

Chapter 1: Prologue / Playlist

"Little girl?" he whispered, darting his eyes all around.

Weathered cars guarded spaces between tents. He devoured the sight of toys scattered and misplaced, with no sight of children playing. His heart sank into his stomach as he swallowed, worry settled deep into his gut.

Billowing wings of black fell over him in overcasting shadows, and one of the winged creatures - a crow with beady eyes - he jolted sideways, following a blur of black that snuck by -

'There!'

A woman sat in her car with crows feasting on puckered skin . . .

'Don't look,' he commanded himself.

The dead couldn't be helped, but there was still a child looking for help.

"Little girl?" He knew the dead can't talk, he shuddered. The calling of crows roared in his ears.

Footsteps, in the distance, dragged along patches of yellowed grass. A rock skittering across land caught his attention.

There was someone walking. He breathed a sigh of relief, "Little girl, it's alright."

She must be too scared to talk. The empty gas canister in his hand threatened to fall to the ground in his suddenly slackened grip, he called out cautiously again, "I won't hurt you."

He gasped when he rounded another tent and came to face the back of a young girl's long hair. She's alive, "You're . . ." his voice trailed off, "safe . . ." his next words died on his lips.

Blank blue eyes rolled in all directions, but her feet carried her to him. Her small body, dressed in a torn bathrobe, came closer and closer, with outstretched arms.

A brief thought slipped into his head - 'it's a trick, she's alive - a child is alive and asking for help -'

"Oh," his jaw dropped. Her arms visibly shook in the air, but a steadily dripping bloody stub took the place of where a small hand should be.

A snarl brought his attention to her face. Dark blood dripped down the gaping wound that shredded the corner of her mouth and left a pit where her cheek and teeth used to be.

Hot tears flooded his eyes, causing his vision to blur. "I'm sorry," he raised his gun and aimed at the little girl.

Dark globs of dried blood and streams of red coated her entire neck.

In a moment, he saw a vision of someone else. Face half-mauled and missing a hand, but still reaching out for him. Long hair became short, the bathrobe became a comfortable combination of a plaid shirt and jeans. Her lack of scent was replaced with Carl's and swathed his nose, the familiar scent he longed to reunite with his own.

If this situation was different, would he only see his injured son, and not a dead creature?

His finger pressed down on the cold trigger. Could he do this to Carl?
