Chapter 110: Favor
Over the next few days, Hannah was busier than ever. She didn't even have the time to think about Malik's case. Alex had advised her on how she could help Devon best when it came to his defense and how to get him the best pro bono legal aid.
Hannah had finally managed to forgive Elliot. After all, he'd been the one to help her find Devon's brother. As it turned out, his brother had been up in Attica for drug possession, but he'd recently gotten out. At the time, he'd told the judge that he was only acting on someone else's behalf, but it had made no difference to his sentencing. Still, Alex had warned her he probably would be deemed unfit as a guardian to his younger brother.
Elliot had tried to find Devon's father instead, but no luck there. His mother proved to be even harder to track down, even though they actually knew who she was. The problem was, she never kept a fixed address.
Devon's bail hearing came and went, but it looked like he'd get off with just parole. Still, being already seventeen and it not exactly being his first offence, he would be tried as an adult.
'Elliot?' Hannah walked straight over to him after she'd completed her hours at the shelter, 'How do I go about visiting someone in jail?'
'Who do you know who's in jail?' Olivia's head shot up.
'Well, hello to you too,' he greeted her, 'How was your day? Mine was very long, in case you're interested.'
'I am,' Hannah sighed, 'Extremely interested. Thank you for sharing. Now, can you please just help me out here? I need to get into jail.'
Olivia waved a hand, trying to attract the attention of both her partner and her daughter, 'Why? Who do you want to visit?'
Elliot turned to Hannah, 'You wanna visit Devon?'
'Yeah, I need to know more about his brother. Maybe I can convince someone he is a fit guardian, but only if Devon wants to.'
Olivia tried again, 'I thought Devon was already tried?'
'Just the bail hearing,' Elliot finally acknowledged her, 'but he needs a place to stay afterwards. Hannah thought we might try the brother.'
'What brother?' But she was ignored once again.
Hannah whined, 'Come, El, just tell me how to get in.'
'You make it sound like a reversed prison escape,' he raised his eyebrows, 'Alright, I'll get you in, but I'm coming with you.'
Hannah opened her mouth to protest, but he held up and hand decisively, 'It's either that or you can go home and telepathically try to talk to him.'
'Fine.'
And that's when Olivia exploded and slammed a hand down onto her desk. Elliot looked up with wide eyes and Hannah stared at her in shock, asking, 'What's with you?'
'Oh, do I have your attention now?'
'Yep,' she nodded, still wide-eyed.
'Good! Elliot, please explain why you wanna take my kid with you to go visit someone who tried to stab her not a week ago?'
Elliot shot Hannah a look that seemed to say: oh, we're in trouble now... But before he could explain, Cragen appeared and he called Hannah into his office, in his usual manner that left very little room for discussion.
As she walked off, Hannah could hear Elliot soothe, 'Liv, it's no big deal. I've been with her the whole time. She just wants to find a way to help Devon...' Hannah knew Olivia wouldn't be so easily schmoozed.
But Hannah had bigger problems right now: Cragen had his strict grandfather-is-not-happy face on and she tried her best to look both innocent and remorseful at the same time.
'Stop that,' he saw through it at once, 'I haven't even told you what I called you in here for.'
'So... tell me.'
He sighed and eventually said, 'You've been taking up a lot of my detective's time recently. I need to know why.'
Hannah frowned in confusion, 'Because she adopted me?'
'Not that one. The other one.'
'Munch?'
'Will you cut the crap!' Cragen called out, 'You and Elliot have been working on something in secret and I want to know what it is! You've even dragged Alex into it.'
'Oh, that's what you mean...' Hannah nodded slowly, pretending in earnest she didn't understand before, 'I just asked their advice on something going on with a friend, that's all.'
The captain's eyes were drilling holes into her, 'Just their advice?'
'I may have called in a few favors as well.'
'You do realize these people technically work for ME?'
Hannah nodded, but kept her mouth shut.
'And this friend,' he continued, 'Would this be Devon Williams, by any chance?'
'Might be?'
'Right, so, do you plan on cashing in on any more favors any time soon? Because in that case I won't take on any big cases, seeing as my people are too busy,' Cragen asked sarcastically.
'Do you want me to stop?' Hannah finally asked.
The old man sighed and looked at her. Then he softened, 'He's worth all the effort?'
'Isn't anyone?'
'Alright,' he gave in, 'Guess this is my own fault for scheming with Alex. How are you doing at the shelter?'
'Oh, it's good!' Hannah started telling him about all the work she'd been doing and how she was actually enjoying her time there.
But then the ADA stuck her head around the corner and Cragen told Hannah to get out, and to Alex, 'How can I help?'
'Actually... It's Hannah I need,' Alex explained, a little apologetic.
'Why? What's wrong?' Hannah turned around, 'I'll come with you.'
And with that, both girls left, leaving a behind a very irritated Captain. He walked out of his office and looked at Olivia for some kind of explanation, but she threw up her hands in defeat as well.
Unfortunately, the court hadn't deemed Devon's brother fit for custody. But Hannah wasn't about to give up. She kept telling Alex that if they could just find the mother, things would clear up. She'd been dealing drugs all her life, as well as using them, and maybe they could prove to the court that both boys had been abused and forced into that life.
Alex didn't have much hope, most of all because they had no idea where the mother was, but Hannah pleaded, 'Please Alex, just do me this one favor... Get me some more time and maybe I can find her.'
In the end, Alex managed to get her 48 hours, which was a minor miracle in itself.
The next day, Hannah was walking around Harlem. She'd found out that the mother used to live there and asked everyone and anyone if they'd seen her. No luck so far.
Finally, she found a girl about her age, hanging around the corner, 'Have you seen this woman?' Hannah held up a photograph.
The girl withdrew at once, 'You a cop or something?'
'No,' Hannah laughed, 'I'm only fifteen.' And then she decided to change her approach and started acting all antsy and nervous, 'I just need a fix, you know? She used to help me out. Come on, please? I really, really need to get straight.'
She still looked at her with some distrust, but said, 'Next block, the grey building? She's up on the 6th floor. Just follow the party...'
Immediately, Hannah made her way to the building and running up the stairs, got to the 6th floor quickly. Behind one of the doors, she could hear the sounds of a lot of people, and she figured that would be the apartment she was looking for.
The second Hannah knocked on the door, she realized she didn't have any kind of plan. Improvisation it is, she thought.
A man with a hardly invisible gun in his pocket opened the door. He looked her up and down and asked the others, 'Did we order some chick?'
'I'm here for Tracy?' Hannah tried to look into the apartment, but he blocked her way.
'What for?' he demanded.
'I just need to talk to her real quick, get her to help me out.' Hannah hopped from one leg onto the next.
'Tracy!' he called out, 'This skinny girl one of yours?'
When the woman's head appeared, Hannah added, while trying to look her in the eye, 'Devon send me.'
Tracy seemed to think about it for a second and then nodded, motioning for Hannah to come in. Hannah took one look at her and saw that she was high. She tried to pull her to the side, to talk in private, but then the door was kicked open with a loud bang.
At least five guns were pulled and when the first gunshot sounded, Hannah took Tracy's hand and ran with her into the bedroom, where she barricaded the door.
'That won't stop them!' the woman called out, 'Did you bring them here?'
'No! Who are they?'
'Probably just a rival gang, looking to get to the stash.' Then she took another scrutinizing look at Hannah, 'You're with the cops, aren't you? You look like a cop. They're gonna shoot you once they figure it out.'
Hannah cursed and wished she still looked as rough as she'd once done. Then she decided quickly and took off her sweater and shirt. She managed to quickly mess up her hair, just before a few gangsters kicked down the bedroom door as well.
Smiling as seductively as she could, she daringly approached one of them, 'Looking for a good time as well, baby? How about a hundred, just for you...'
'Get this bitch out of here!' One of them spit, but another one was checking her out. Suddenly it occurred to Hannah that her plan could seriously backfire on her if one of them did take an interest. And for a moment, she became frightened.
However, the gunshots hadn't remained unnoticed. A few moments later, actual cops entered the apartment and, in the chaos, Hannah and Tracy got pulled to every which side. Arrests were being made and before Hannah could say anything, she felt handcuffs were being put on her.
'Wait!' she protested, 'I'm not actually with them. I just needed to talk...'
'Save it for the judge, sweet thing,' the police officer grumbled, 'You're under arrest for prostitution.'
Hannah sighed deeply and rolled her eyes, almost audibly.
Obviously, her one phone call had gone to Alexandra Cabot. Alex managed to get them to drop the charges, showing that Hannah had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, she had reminded Hannah every second of the way that she was all out of favors now. She would lend her her blouse, just so that the teenager didn't have to walk around the building in just her bra, but that was it.
Hannah thought she was being ungrateful. She'd found Tracy for her, hadn't she? At least now they could help Devon and his brother out.
But Tracy wasn't as stupid as they'd thought. She wasn't to be charged either for being at that apartment, but the second she heard about Devon and his troubles, and the fact that his brother might get custody, she said she'd file for custody.
But Hannah didn't want to wait for that, so the moment she was released, she sprinted down to Alex's office, 'I need you to file for an order of protection for Devon against his mom!' Hannah had it all figured out.
Alex sighed and seriously questioned her sanity. She hadn't become an ADA so that she could deal with teenagers all day; the detectives were hard enough to keep in line as it was! 'Can you prove that there was ever any abuse?'
'Yes! She'll come after him if we don't get it. I just need a detective on the case and then I can point them in the direction of the evidence. I talked to Devon's brother and he'll testify. Please, Alex?' Hannah tried her best puppy dog eyes.
'And what do you expect me to tell the judge this time?' The blonde demanded, 'Hello, it's me again, acting on behalf of one very zealous little girl, I need another favor. She won't go for it AGAIN, Hannah!'
'Can't you try another judge?' Hannah suggested.
Alex sighed again and without really knowing why, she picked up the phone, 'Uncle Bill? Hi, it's Alex. I need a favor. Can you get me a court order to...'
Hannah jumped up and did a small victory dance, but one stern look from Alex made her regain her composure at once.
After the call was done, Alex lectured, 'That's it. That is all I will do for you. No more favors, no more helping you. And I want that blouse back.'
'Thanks, Alex,' Hannah smiled, 'I just want the right person to actually get punished for all this, you know?'
The corners of Alex' mouth just went up the tiniest bit, 'That is why I chose this job.'
Hannah nodded, 'You're kinda my hero, you know that, right?'
'Well, do me a favor this time and stay in school. Then go to college, even go to university. Finish law school or go to the police academy or whatever, just find a way to put all of your energy and brains into something productive and stop bothering me.'
Hannah looked at Alex and thought: she likes me. So, she promised her right there and then to work hard and stay in school.
'Also,' Alex added, 'I'm not covering for you. I told Olivia you got arrested and she'll be here in a few minutes to pick you up.'
'Right,' Hannah pondered on that, dreading her mom's outburst, that was sure to come, with every fiber of her being, 'Are my favors really all used up?'
'Positive. Don't come back until next week,' And with that, Alex kicked her out, leaving Hannah alone on the bench outside to wait for Olivia.
