When the two teams reached the tower, they unfurl their respective scrolls and are met with Iruka-sensei and another chunin whom Shikaoi did not know the name of, but briefly recognises as one of the ones who was undercover in the first exam.
Iruka Umino's brow was wrinkled in worry; however, he wastes no time congratulating his former students. He promises to take Naruto for ramen and extends the invitation to the rest of the genin as well, and gestures for his fellow chunin to alert the hokage as news of their encounter with Orochimaru had already reached the tower, and the hokage wanted to question the genie before the next part of the exam.
The six genin are quickly ushered into a different room where the Sandaime, Kakashi-sensei, Asuma-sensei, and the former Ino-Shika-Cho, also known as team ten plus Shikaoi's fathers, are waiting.
Inoichi flickered to his daughter and quickly looked her over for injuries, his former teammates do the same with their children as Sandaime begins by asking the genin about their encounter with Orochimaru.
Team seven explains how they were suddenly attacked and separated, and Naruto loudly regales the Sandaime and the jonin present about his encounter with Orochimaru's giant snake, and his use of "super cool ninja techniques" to break out of the snake from the inside, much to Ino's disgust at the description.
Shikaoi and Sasuke report on how the sanin had attacked them and the subsequent events. Shikamaru explains how his team had seen the flare set off by Naruto, and had gone to investigate when he sensed Shikaoi's chakra in the direction of the flare.
When the genin got to the part where Orochimaru tried to 'bite' Shikaoi Shikaku placed a hand on each of his son's shoulders, and the Sandaime raised a hand to silence the teens and asked, "I was under the impression that Orochimaru was after Sasuke's sharigan did he say anything to you, Shikaoi, that may have explained why he went after you?"
"Sasuke and I were disguised as each other to surprise the enemy in the event of an attack," Shikaoi explains.
"I see, and did Orochimaru say anything else," the homage questioned resting his chin on his steepled hands.
"With all due respect Samdaime-Sama, one of the Sannin was trying to steal Sasuke's eyes, and given the fact that I was henged as Sasuke, I didn't want to sit and wait for him to gouge my eyeballs. Orochimaru said that I would give him my body, and then he tried to bite me… in the neck," Shikaoi states. At this point, his father was examining Shikaoi's neck which was badly bruised.
"How did you stop Orochimaru?" The hokage asks as Shikaku sighs in relief at the lack of curse seals on his son.
"I got lucky," Shikaoi explains and hands the seal containing the rogue shadow that saved his neck — quite literally — to his father as Shikamaru and Shikaoi explain how whatever the seal was that Orochimaru tried to use had caused the shadow to become uncontrollable.
Shikaku hums in understanding and pockets the seal once the hokage nods his approval to take and study what had gone wrong with the shadow and compare it with the clan records on their kekkai genkai.
"Sandaime, after Orochimaru attacked Shikaoi I put him under a genjutsu using my sharingan, and he mentioned a spy he referred to as 'Kabuto,'" Sasuke interjected, " I believe this 'Kabuto' is another genin that we encountered before the first exam."
"I see," Sandaime replied straightening in his chair. The hokage dismissed the present shinobi and the sensei led their respective teams to the place they would be waiting until the second exam is over, and the other jonin departed after speaking briefly to their respective children, and congratulating both teams for passing the second part of the exams.
Shikamaru shared a look with the members of team seven after briefly sharing another look with his twin brother he moved to follow his team to the room assigned to his team across the hall from team seven's assigned room, and Shikaoi quickly followed Naruto and Sasuke into the room where they each claimed one of the three beds and soon found themselves in a deep sleep.
